[SOLVED] Changed an option in /etc/updatedb.conf
Hello all,
I started using locate to search my files. However, it never showed files in my /home directory which is, obviously, the directory I search most. Running updatedb --debug-pruning I found out that it didn't add /home to the database because it's an "autofs" filetype:
┌─[jente @ lappy ~] 23:54:27
└─■ sudo updatedb --debug-pruning
`/home' (32 on 18) is `/' of `systemd-1' (0:27), type `autofs'
Skipping `/home': in prunefs
So, I edited /etc/updatedb.conf and removed autofs from the PRUNEFS line. I never found any documentation on this and thus, I don't know if this is the correct way of solving this. Hence this post; I would just like to get some feedback on whether or not I fixed this the right way.
Thanks in advance, guys!

Hey! Thanks for your input. My /home is actually already there:
# /etc/fstab: static file system information
# <file system> <dir> <type> <options> <dump> <pass>
tmpfs /tmp tmpfs nodev,nosuid 0 0
# /dev/sda1
UUID=60eb73f7-635c-4b3e-9d6a-8bb49aee739a / ext4 rw,relatime 0 1
# /dev/sda2 LABEL=home
UUID=4470b151-db99-4586-a652-398e0e8995cb /home ext4 rw,relatime,noauto,x-systemd.automount 0 2
If your /home is on an internal disk, why use automount?

Arch's fonts was too small in firefox and sites was difficult to read and with layout wrong because of font, then I switch the fonts config of ubuntu to my arch to fix this problem and I solve, otherwise now I receive errors in terminal when I perform a program like this: Fontconfig warning: "/etc/fonts/conf.d/53-monospace-lcd-filter.conf", line 17: invalid constant used : legacy".
somebody can help me?
sorry by bad english.
Last edited by solanoalves (2008-01-23 04:08:29)A good idea would be to post that file.
An alternative would be to remove the contents of /etc/fonts/conf.d and reinstall the fontconfig package. Then follow the instructions in the wiki to get a better font rendering.
Good luck -

[SOLVED]/etc/vconsole.conf doesn't react to any change
Hi,
I'm new in Arch Linux, so sorry if I'm missreading something.
I try to change my font and keymap using this manual: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/KEYMAP
So i edit /etc/vconsole.conf like this:
KEYMAP=cz-lat2
FONT=Lat2-Terminus16
but nothing change, even after reboot. "kbd" is installed.
Btw. when I run "setfont Lat2-Terminus16" the font is changed (but just this session).
Thanks

[Solved] Changed Graphics Driver/Xorg.conf, Font Size Now Different
Hello,
I just got the Catalyst 9.4 drivers working on my laptop (Lenovo T400) since the open source ones just can't keep up (even with DRI).
The problem is now my fonts are all different sizes (or not loading).
I was thinking this might be because of my monitor settings in xorg.conf. I've spent a really long time trying to get the catalyst drivers working (I'm doing OpenGL work, so I kinda need them), so I definitely understand why the Arch team took them out of the main repository. I'm just a little hesitant about changing settings after I finally found a working config.

Thanks a bunch for any suggestions, xorg.conf can be a bit confusing for me.

Could be dpi.
What are you using to login?
if it's startx, you can do startx -- -dpi 96
if it's a login manager, you'll need to edit it's configuration and set it otherwise.
Thanks for the quick reply. I'm starting slim as a daemon at bootup inside /etc/rc.conf, then using XFCE4. -
I did an upgrade to deluge v1.3.4-2 today and in that version it seems that the DELUGE_USER option in /etc/conf.d/deluged isnt used anymore. Is that the case?
If thats the case then how do run deluge as another user?
Im following this bug:
https://bugs.archlinux.org/task/28847Same situation here...
User deluge has been hardcoded into the initscript, changing the user deluge both in deluged and deluge-web script restore the wanted behaviour....
As per the error messages of kill, they are generate because the mainteinar changed the behaviour of the script.
Before the update, the stop section removed the pid from /run/deluge
Now the script does not remove the pid file, it tries to overwrite the pid value inside with the new value.
But still this section puzzles me:
PIDFILE=/run/deluge/deluged.pid
OPTIONS="-P $PIDFILE $OPTIONS"
[[ -f $PIDFILE ]] && PID=$(<$PIDFILE)
kill -0 $PID || PID=
Because:
- Why test if the pidfile is a regular file? (-f flag)...imho sure that it is, no one touch it except for deluged main program and now that the script has been modified the file is not removed and recreated anymore during any operation
- Why always try to kill the process?? That brings the error message of kills in two situations: when the program is first started and deluged.pid does not exists, and during restart operation, where kill cannot find the process since in the pidfile there is still the old pid value and the process has been killed by this section during the stop operation. Imho the kill should be performed in the stop section and not in the header. Or delete the pidfile during stop operation, and check for the existance of file before grabbing the pid value and kill it. What's the behaviour of the new version of deluged when you pass as an argument the pidfile? It creates the file if does not exists or requires that the file exists? -
hello.
I set dhcpcd not to override the /etc/resolv.conf file:
[root@ jenia]# cat /etc/dhcpcd.conf
# A hook script is provided to lookup the hostname if not set by the DHCP
# server, but it should not be run by default.
nohook lookup-hostname
noipv4ll
nohook resolv.conf <----------------------------------------------------------------------------
However, this has no effect:
[root@ jenia]# cat /etc/resolv.conf
domain members.linode.com
nameserver 72.14.179.5
nameserver 72.14.188.5
nameserver 2600:3c00::2
nameserver 2600:3c00::3
options rotate
[root@ jenia]# systemctl start [email protected]
[root@ jenia]# cat /etc/resolv.conf
# This file is managed by systemd-resolved(8). Do not edit.
# Third party programs must not access this file directly, but
# only through the symlink at /etc/resolv.conf. To manage
# resolv.conf(5) in a different way, replace the symlink by a
# static file or a different symlink.
nameserver 8.8.8.8
nameserver 8.8.4.4
nameserver 2001:4860:4860::8888
# Too many DNS servers configured, the following entries may be ignored
nameserver 2001:4860:4860::8844
As you can see dhcpcd ovveride the /etc/resolv.conf file.
How can I avoid this? How can I change the file and make the changes permanent.
Thanks in advance.
Last edited by jenia (2014-07-16 17:20:02)yes. exactly. i removed and used a text editor to make the necessary changes to a file of the same name (/etc/resolv.conf).
now the changes remained.
thanks. -
[SOLVED] How to restore kernel image after wrong /etc/mkinitcpio.conf
I wanted to learn a bit more about the kernel and boot, and I'm afraid I cannot start up my ArchLinux anymore.
I updated the /etc/mkinitcpio.conf to make the boot faster (with this reference: http://kmandla.wordpress.com/2007/01/30 … initcpio/) and executed #mkinitcpio -p kernel26
I thought that if there was any problem, I could start up with the "fallback image". Certainly, there was a problem (probably I didn´t loaded all the modules required) and when I tried the fallback image, I experimented the same problem:
Root device '/dev/disk/by-uuid/...' doesn´t exist
ramfs$
In fact, both images are the same (or at least they have the same size)
I tried the ArchLinux liveCD to recover my system. There's no recovery service, so I started up the CD-ROM, mounted my ArchLinux partitions, generated the images and copied into the /boot of my Archlinux partitions. But the same problem is still there.
What could I do to fix it?
Thank you in advance
Last edited by jjjaime (2009-05-10 15:45:45)Thank you. I follow your instructions and it worked (perhaps it would be simpler with a "#pacman -Sy kernel26"). I didn't know the command chroot and it's really interesting.

I have a similar problem, (read more in this thread), and I solve it by booting off the Live CD, and doing the following:
(replace sda1 with your / partition)
cd /
mount -t ext3 /dev/sda1 /mnt
mount -t proc proc /mnt/proc
mount -t sysfs sys /mnt/sys
mount -o bind /dev /mnt/dev
chroot /mnt /bin/bash
mkinitcpio -p kernel26
after that, I exit chroot, unmount all of my partitions and reboot...:
cd /
umount -a
exit
cd /
umount -a
reboot
hope this helps... -
[solved]Delay mySQL startup by 30 secs in /etc/rc.conf
Basically I use wpa_supplicant and it takes a a bit to connect, by the time /etc/rc.conf gets to the mysql startup service, mySQL cannot bind to my servers address,
This is because wpa_supplicant probably hasn't got an IP address yet, so mySQL fails to start at bootup every time, however right after the boot I can log in and manually boot it just fine.
Any Ideas? Maybe delay the mysql by 30-40 seconds at boot? Anyone know how?

You could put:
/etc/rc.d/mysqld start
in /etc/rc.local
Thanks for the reply but I solved this by removing the @ before netprofiles, so that wpa_supplicant doesnt startup in the background, therefor everything else waits until wpa_supplicant is connected before it boots.

Settings in /etc/sysctl.conf overwritten [SOLVED]
I added a new line to /etc/sysctl.conf setting the vm.dirty_ratio to 3 (line is simply `vm.dirty_ratio = 3`). I can invoke it by running `sysctl -p` so I know the syntax is correct. This setting is however not loaded upon a reboot. The systemd-sysctl.service is however kicked off just fine and completes without errors. I have also tried removing the line from /etc/sysctl.conf and placing it in /etc/sysctl.d/dirty.conf but again, it is not honored at boot. What am I doing wrong?
EDIT: The solution is in post #31 - acknowledgement to chp for pointing me to it. Note that I also changed to topic to a more relevant one.
Last edited by graysky (2013-08-10 12:27:41)Guess I'm stumped. I just spun up an Arch VM, pasted in the /etc/sysctl.conf below and reboot it. All the settings in the file in the VM are applied. If Leonid's guess that something is overriding these values on my workstation, I would like to figure out what it is and shut it down. To keep things simple, I booted into the stock ARCH kernel; here are the services I have active:

Using kdemod4.3(32bit). I re-installed kernel26-2.6.30.5-1-i686(earliest in pacman pkg cache) and added kernel26 and kernel-headers to /etc/pacman.conf IgnorePkg but # "pacman -Syu" still asks to upgrade kernel to 2.30.6-1-i686. What do I add to that IgnorePkg to avoid kernel upgrade? Tried kernel, kernel26 and kernel26*. Adding nvidia,nvidia-utils and xorg-server to Ignorepkg give me that thee aren't upgraded(desirred result). Thanx.

[SOLVED]Changing the KEYMAP in rc.conf
What values are you supposed to give it so that it will change to that keymap? I'm trying to change to the 'colemak' layout, I can't seem to do so.
If I'm already in x, this doesn't work:
setxkbmap colemak
but this does:
setxkbmap us -variant colemak
I tried both 'colemak' and 'us -variant colemak' in rc.conf, but neither works.

no matter how many times to change the content, it keeps like that:
# Generated by dhcpcd from eth0
# /etc/resolv.conf.head can replace this line
nameserver 192.168.8.1
# /etc/resolv.conf.tail can replace this line
so i can't add nameserver in it
Last edited by tempo (2010-01-14 15:01:35)The clue is in the message, use a file called resolv.conf.head to add a nameserver to the top and resolv.conf.tail to add it to the bottom.
It's being overwritten because you are using dhcpcd to auto configure your network settings.

Hey guys,
For some unknown reason /etc/dhcpcd.conf continually overwrites my /etc/resolv.conf file, eventhough I set the "nohook resolv.conf" hook in /etc/dhcpcd.conf.
This is screwing up my DNS and intermittently creating connection problems. Any of you guys know why the hook is not taking effect or how I can stop dhcpcd from overwritting this file?
Thanks

I don't think that information will help w201...
I changed my DNS to the Google one (8.8.8.8 or something). That's in "resolv.conf", isn't it? I remember editing some OTHER configuration file, which is then read to create the "resolve.conf" file. There it is, in that link to the wiki, under "Use resolv.conf.head". Does that help you do what you want to do?
There's three techniques at the wiki link, the nohook one, the resolv.conf.head one and the write-protection attribute. -
No Inputs in xserver(unable to access /etc/rc.conf to change startup)
Hello everyone,
I've installed arch on an older notebook and of all the steps I could miss, I forgot to add hal to the daemons array in /etc/rc.conf so now when arch boots up it goes directly into xserver(kde) without any input hotplugging resulting in no input from trackpad/keyboard, as well as external mouse and keyboard.
I've tried editing /etc/rc.conf when using the arch boot cd but I get "permission denied" when trying to mount /dev/sda1,2,3,4 etc. Is there any way I can interrupt the boot process so that I can remove "kdm" from the daemons array? Or to somehow stop arch from booting into xserver? I'm somewhat new to the linux environment but I try my best to follow all and any tutorials/advice and you guys seem to have the most detailed tutorials of all the distros - way to go!
Thanks for the help
Last edited by geometro (2010-06-08 01:30:06)You need to set a different runlevel in the Grub entry. Once you have selected the entry in the boot menu, you can edit it by pressing key e. Add "3" (without to quotes) to the end of the kernel line and then Esc to exit. Then you can try to boot by pressing b.
Runlevel 3 didnt work(still booted into xserver), but I looked up into runlevels(didnt know about them before) so I tried runlevel 1 and it worked! :P Thanks for the help!!
"Runlevel 1 is usually for very basic commands. This is the equivalent to "safe mode" used by Windows. This level is usually only used to asses repairs or maintenance to the system. This is a single-user mode and does not allow other users to login to the machine."
