[Solved]Controlling systemd's 'emergency-behaviour'

So after boot-cycling some systems only to return to the 'emergency-console' because something went wrong during boot, I'm wondering if there is any way to control 'when' exactly the system(d) decides it can no longer continue booting.
More specifically, I know why the boot fails, its because of a certain mount line in /etc/fstab.
Sometimes the filesystem just isn't available, in my case because the kernel-module needed hasn't been rebuilt after a kernel upgrade, but its easy to image other scenarios like networked filesystems and such.
So I'm wondering how to stop systemd from dropping into 'emergency-room-mode' just because of a failed mount line in /etc/fstb, and more generally if/where/how more fine grained control is possible.
Any ideas?

...but for my purposes I'd rather the boot process be as permissive as possible.
Exactly my point, it could be more permissive in case such as non-essential fs not being available.*
The 'nofail' option apparently does just that (tell the system that a fs is not essential). This fixes my 'problem'.
And it gets to chose when to stick to the rules and when to ignore some, and it gets to chose which ones to ignore.
The whole point of me asking was to find out how to to instruct the system towards behaving in a appropriate fashion. The 'nofail' option tells the system to 'ignore some stuff', in this case a filesystem, I don't get your angle.
What's the problem, again?
*While using 'nofail' works fine, the 'problem/nag' that remains is that this could be the default for non-essential mountpoints thus eliminating the need for adding the option manually. But I guess there's a ton of reasons for it not being so, or maybe not...

  • [SOLVED] Borked systemd setup -- dbus errors during boot; can't login

    I have error messages very similar to this post. Unfortunately, as the author states, he never persisted in solving it but instead re-installed from scratch. I'd rather not do that.
    For reference, I have a pure systemd setup -- no rc.conf file, no initscripts package, etc.
    At boot I get the "Welcome to Arch!" messages followed by the various [OK] lines and then I get blindingly fast repeating lines about dbus not starting and attempting to restart it too quickly. If I walk away for about 1-2min, I finally see a login screen, but after entering my username/password, it just sits there and does nothing.
    As for suspects... I had systemd working fine.
    -- I updated some packages (not more than a few days worth and I'd have to check the list)
    -- I also took care of manual updates to some .pacnew files I periodically check for. In this group were some biggies: group, shadow, and passwd. I did recall the odd bit about uuidd changing from uid 995 to 68, but in reading about that since then, it doesn't seem to be a big deal.
    I've been booting in by appending
    systemd.unit=emergency.target
    to the kernel line, but my exploration hasn't been all that helpful. `journalctl since=date` reveals the errors, but I don't get much information about why dbus is having issues starting.
    emergency.target also doesn't seem to be that helpful since I can't do anything with a read-only system. I'd love some suggestions about what, specifically, to check for before I reboot from Windows back into Arch and record more careful notes, probably by jotting notes onto a flash drive. Any places to start? For reference, I've done:
    -- systemctl status dbus: lists as inactive (dead) and simply shows the errors I see at boot (failed to start)
    -- systemctl list-units
    -- systemctl list-unit-files
    -- journalctl and looking around for instances of fail or failed or dbus
    If I start systemd-logind.service or dbus.service, it displays a status message about running fsck and then takes me to a login prompt automatically. Then I can type in my username and password and then there's nothing after that. No prompt, just an apparent hang.
    Thanks for any suggestions -- I'll take them and then collect more detailed results and report back.
    Thanks!

    As I wondered, I think it's a problem with passwd. I don't have a dbus entry and must have missed it when I was copying things around between my version and the .pacnew. Downloading an install disc now since I can't seem to change it from the recovery console due to mounting root read-only.
    I'd love to know of a way to boot that avoids starting dbus and other things that might break while still having read/write access to root. Will mark solved once I update /etc/passwd and reboot.

  • [SOLVED] French Canadian keyboard strange behaviour

    Hello!
    I just upgraded to Gnome 2.30 in [testing] and my keyboard has a strange behaviour. With Gnome 2.28, my keyboard layout was set to Canadian French (legacy), and still is, though some of the keys do not behave the same. For instance, the accents "`", "¸" and ^ do not behave as usual, but rather give me some letter with that accent on it, rather than letting me choose the letter on which put the accent.
    Moreover, the SHIFT+3 combination gives me a # instead of a /, but not in all software. Google Chrome has the good behaviour, but gnome-terminal gives me a #.
    Do you understand any of this?
    I'll post the packages I have upgraded.

    Problem solved!
    I remembered I once configured my keyboard with HAL and /etc/hal/fdi/policy/10-keymap.fdi was set to xkb.layout=ca and xkd.variant=fr. I changed the GDM layout to Canada and removed the xkb.variant=fr from the .fdi file and everything was fixed!

  • [SOLVED]PulseAudio systemd daemon doesn't work

    Hello.
    I try to set PulseAudio as systemd service, but I'm still getting errors.
    Here is how my .service file looks like.
    $cat /usr/lib/systemd/system/[email protected]

  • [solved] udev = systemd-tools: system no longer boots completely

    Hi guys. Today I updated my system, and now it won't boot past the boot messages. It appears that my ttys aren't being "made" (?). The actual errors appear to be
    [ TIME ] Timed out waiting for device dev-tty2.device
    [ TIME ] Timed out waiting for device dev-tty3.device
    Booting into rescue.target doesn't complete either.
    Downgrading systemd-184-2 => systemd-44-7, and replacing systemd-tools with udev allows me to boot successfully again.
    Additional info:
    cpu: Intel Core i5-3570K
    kernel: linux-3.3.7-1-x86_64
    graphics card: GeForce GTX 560 Ti
    graphics driver: xf86-video-nouveau 0.0.16_git20120512-1 (relevant, maybe? 0.0.16_git20120512-2 makes X give up with a "No screens found" error
    system init: systemd (via systemd-sysvcompat)
    Advice please.
    EDIT: boot screen images
    EDIT EDIT: I can connect via SSH to the affected machine. Here's the journal: http://codepad.org/76aB2DnD
    EDIT EDIT EDIT: That apparently got snipped. Here's part 2, starting from line 806: http://codepad.org/5UGdsuwE

    Huh. I guess the problem was a couple of stale and crusty {,f}getty .service files, and an obsolete slim.service file I created a while back.
    Removing them fixed my problem, although tty1 still shows boot messages (not a problem, and may not even be "new" behaviour)
    Cheers Tomegun.

  • [SOLVED] After Systemd update...2 problems!

    Yesterday I update my system and switch to the pure systemd as of arch linux wiki.
    Everything is working well, boot time is lightning fast, every programs are working except for Amarok and Vlc.
    When I click on the start menu (I'm using KDE) -> then multimedia and Amarok or Vlc, the icon bounce without opening the program's window.
    I must kill the Amarok and/or Vlc process in the monitor.
    Running in console show absolutely nothing for Vlc.
    Running Amarok in sudo in console output:
    QDBusConnection: session D-Bus connection created before QCoreApplication. Application may misbehave.
    unnamed app(774): KUniqueApplication: Cannot find the D-Bus session server:  "/usr/bin/dbus-launch terminated abnormally with the following error: No protocol specified
    Autolaunch error: X11 initialization failed
    All my daemon of before systemd are active and systemd setting are ok too.
    Does anyone have the same behavior or can point me to a possible solution?
    Thanks,

  • [Solved]Control of automatic GPU switching in Linux 3.13

    I'm using the Linux Kernel 3.13 of the testing repository, I have a laptop with Hybrid Graphics ATI/Intel:
    00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation 2nd Generation Core Processor Family Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 09)
    01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. [AMD/ATI] Whistler [Radeon HD 6730M/6770M/7690M XT] (rev ff)
    I use the vgaswitcheroo method to shutdown the discrete GPU, it generally show this:
    0:IGD:+:Pwr:0000:00:02.0
    1:DIS: :Off:0000:01:00.0
    But with the New Kernel Feature Automatic GPU Switching I can't shutdown the Discrete GPU of my Hybrid Graphics System, I got this output:
    0:IGD:+:Pwr:0000:00:02.0
    1:DIS: :DynPwr:0000:01:00.0
    I have searched for the power_dpm_state in /sys/class/drm for change to "battery" mode but it file doesn't exist (With the Kernel 3.12 I can set up DPM to "battery" mode)
    I don't want to use the Discrete GPU on Linux to save energy and with the DynPwr I got about 60 ͦ C
    How Can I set up my Hybrid Graphics Cards for reduce the temperature?
    Thanks!

    clearly seems to be DSDT bug - a bug in your notebook's low-level firmware. It's nearly insolvable.
    You may  try to update BIOS, or decompose@recompile DSDT by yourself.
    I have not succeeded in the latter task, though in my case it just can't remember brightness between reboots and lockups GPU if I dare to switch it.
    By the way, have you seen the Lenovo S540 wiki page on ArchWiki? It suggests to disable modesetting in intel videocard ( kernel parameter intel.modeset=0 means exactly that).
    And I can't say anything about stack trace (!) in your dmesg. Maybe it's related to above intel modesetting.
    Yes:

    Bios is latest available!
    I'll have a look at disabling Intel nomodeset and test later or tomorrow and report back. (This is a dual boot uefi machine booting via rEFInd)
    Edit: booting the 3.13.7 kernel with intel,modeset=0 gives the same blank screen on graphical boot but the kernel loads fine - access vis ssh to downgrade the kernel to 3.13.6 and boot with the same parameter works fine though. So there remains a problem with the graphical boot for kernel .13.7
    For the working 3.13.6 kernel the Xorg log is:

  • How to Control the Dynamic Pegging Behaviour in CDP

    Dear All,
    We are using Characteristic Dependent Planning (CDP) to plan configurable materials.
    The requirement is to control the behaviour of Dynamic Pegging of a dependent requirement to receipt. We are using MTS strategy.
    The BOM is P2 -
    > P1.
    Now P1 and P2 have characteristics called Length, WIdth, Grade,etc. The normal CDP based pegging considers all the characteristics and tries to match them. However we wish to peg only based on Grade and WIdth (the characteristic Length is not pegging relevant but only for information). We cannot make Length as APO non relevant.
    We have already modified the heuristic such that it doesnt consider length in netting off.
    Is there any way we can modify the pegging behaviour through some development?

    Hi,
    We had a compareable business requirement and it has been modelled using public method /SAPAPO/IF_EX_RRP_PLANNING~PEGID_GET_IO (Change the Receipts and Reqs After Reading from liveCache) from BAdI Interface /SAPAPO/IF_EX_RRP_PLANNING
    The heuristic calls up the method after it has read the requirements and receipts in SAP liveCache,and has determined the virtual safety stock requirements based on the settings in the planning version and in the location product master.
    We basically implemented the following steps:
    Get non-pegging relevant characteristics (using a spec table nammed i.e. zpp_npeg_chars)
    Get internal numbers of non-pegging relevant characteristics (collecting entries from cabn)
    Remove values of non-pegging relevant characteristics (deleting in table CT_CHARACT_REQ = Table with Characteristic Requirements)
    You can also influence CDP propagation by using method /SAPAPO/IF_EX_RRP_PLANNING~RECEIPTS_SAVE (Change the Planning Results) from same BAdI Interface.
    Hoping this help.
    BR,
    Pascal.

  • [SOLVED] Suddenly booting in emergency mode, why?

    Hi,
    i already searched here and with google and I could find problems regarding the emergency mode but none fitting to mine
    I really dont know what I shall do now.
    I just rebooted because my wifi was connected but i had no internet connection although it was there on other devices. after reboot it showed emergency mode like in the pictures below.
    plus i posted the error parts of the journal output.
    can someone help me with that?
    thank you very much

    But how can I prevent this? I guess it was because my notebook booted into windows and because II didn't want it to boot I just restarted while booting. not the gentle way but usually I had no problems with that. I mean I won't do that again now but can I maybe fix something in my fstab?
    # /etc/fstab: static file system information
    # <file system> <dir> <type> <options> <dump> <pass>
    tmpfs /tmp tmpfs nodev,nosuid 0 0
    # /dev/sdb8 UUID=3699c7ac-8e3e-42c6-b215-19965446990e
    LABEL=arch / ext4 rw,relatime,data=ordered 0 2
    # /dev/sdb7 UUID=570f4617-353e-4631-9825-2bc569f35af0
    LABEL=swap none swap defaults 0 0
    LABEL=stuff /media/stuff ntfs defaults,rw 0 2
    why is there a swap at all? When I installed arch I especially tried doing it without a swap drive because I have 16gb of ram, so I thought I don't need that?
    but to be safe I should exchange all the labels with UUIDs right?
    afterwards I will mark this thread as solved.
    UUID's are generally safer because they won't change over time. I got mixed up with labels referring to "/dev/sdb8" or "arch", so your current definitions should be fine as long as you don't introduce a new drive labelled arch.
    To get rid of mounting the swap partition, (This WILL disable hibernation) you can just prefix the swap line with a hash so it isn't parsed.
    To allow skipping of the Windows partition if it's in HybridBoot, add "nofail" to the options region. E.G: LABEL=stuff /media/stuff ntfs defaults,rw,nofail 0 0
    Last thing (Hopefully), the pass field, (the digit 2 in the "stuff" line) should be a zero, as fsck cannot scan NTFS as far as I know.

  • [SOLVED] System goes in emergency mode after upgrade

    Hi,
    since my last system upgrade the system always ends up in emergency mode. While booting it says it fails to mount /proc/bus/usb. Any ideas to get KDE running again?

  • [SOLVED] Pure systemd (systemd-sysvcompat) causes slowdown

    Apologies in advance for the vague issue report: i'm not too sure how to go about diagnosing the problem.
    I've set up systemd as directed in the wiki: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/sy … stallation
    Things work just fine for the "mixed" installation.
    However, when i go all in and install systemd-sysvcompat, i notice a considerable slowdown in the performance of my computer.  (E.g. flash videos are laggy when watching full screen, and some code i'm working on takes 10s on a particular benchmark vs. 2s with the mixed install.)
    When i run "top" there's nothing using a copious amount of CPU or memory that could explain the slowdown.
    I guess that either there's something different in the daemons that run.  Maybe there's some cpu power management or something not being enabled.  Well, i don't know really, hence the post!
    Any idea how i can go about tracking this one down?
    Thanks.
    edit: [SOLVED], well disappeared on its own...
    After reinstalling initscripts, rebooting, then reinstalling systemd-sysvcompat (removing initscripts), and making the required changes to /boot/grub/menu.lst, things seem to be back to full speed...  Weirdness.  Apologies for posting too soon.

  • [solved] new systemd-sysctl applies 99-sysctl.conf before networkd?

    Recently pacman updated systemd.
    I use systemd-networkd for Ethernet (wired) control (Wireless LAN is hard blocked)
    I have this in /etc/sysctl.d/99-sysctl.conf
    net.ipv4.ip_forward = 1
    This is to allow sharing of internet where my system is gateway.
    This worked fine before the recent update.
    But after upgrade internet sharing stopped.
    I noticed the following sysctl variables (sysctl -a)
    net.ipv4.conf.all.forwarding = 1
    net.ipv4.conf.default.forwarding = 1
    net.ipv4.conf.ens5.forwarding = 0
    net.ipv4.conf.ppp1.forwarding = 1
    net.ipv4.conf.wls1.forwarding = 1
    net.ipv4.ip_forward = 1
    Three strange things:
    1st is wls1 is disabled yet it is shown (but lets ignore it)
    ens5 fowarding is 0?? while rest all are 1.
    ppp1 is actually PPPoE based connection activated by [email protected] and runs over ens5
    Once I do:
    sysctl net.ipv4.conf.ens5.forwarding=1
    Internet sharing starts working as expected.
    So what is the issue? What changed?
    Is it that systemd-sysctl gets applied before systemd-network brings ens5 up?
    But then ppp1 is based on ens5 - how is that 1?
    Thanks in advance.

    Looks like someone has already file bugreport:

    Possible solution would be to add
    IPForward=yes
    to systemd-networkd .network file

  • [SOLVED]Pacman systemd missing file

    error: could not open file /var/lib/pacman/local/systemd-217-8/desc: No such file or directory

    Can you help me to solve this issue?

    Just reinstall systemd:
    pacman -S systemd
    select yes if it prompts due to it already being installed.
    You might also want to run `pacman -Qk` to see if any other packages have been damaged.
    EDIT: I just did some silly trial and error and deleted that file from my system (probably would have been smarter to move/rename it).  Reinstalling systemd failed due to a conflicting file error as all the files for the package are there, but the pacman database doesn't realize they belong to that package.  In this case I used --force with the single specific package:
    pacman -S --force systemd
    Note that this use of --force is an apparent necessity to fix this specific problem.  This does not support using it when uncertain why something fails - I knew why it was failing.

  • [SOLVED] cpupower/systemd, cannot set 'performance' governor at boot

    Hi all, i upgraded to systemd and everything is working fine and faster: the only one thing i'm missing is cpufrequtils since this was the only way to set the "performance" governor at boot and have it stay this way.
    Since i upgraded to cpupower and enabled the cpupower.service unit, the governor is automatically switched to ondemand even if i specified performance in the /etc/conf.d/cpupower config file: i don't get what's happening because if i restart the cpupower.service unit manually everything is fine and it will not switch to ondemand on its own o_O

    I think i could auto-start some script via gnome-session-properties but i would love to have a systemd-only solution working :-/

    Sure they are, "ondemand" and "performance" modules should be compiled-in into the default kernel, i can even run it *after* logging in gnome-shell and the settings will stay correctly.

  • [solved] writing systemd service file to run script

    i have completely migrated to systemd. now, i am trying to write a service file to run a startup script (~/.startup.sh). one of the functions of the script is to set the brightness of the screen:
    echo "95" > /sys/class/backlight/intel_backlight/brightness
    i created /etc/systemd/system/startup.service:
    [Unit]
    Description=Run startup script
    [Service]
    Type=oneshot
    ExecStart=~/.startup.sh
    [Install]
    WantedBy=multi-user.target
    but i get the following error:
    Failed to issue method call: Unit startup.service failed to load: Invalid argument. See system logs and 'systemctl status startup.service' for details.
    i have two questions:
    1. what am i missing?
    2. how can i avoid permission issues associated with modifying the brightness file (e.g., permission denied errors, the need to put in the password, etc.)?
    thanks.

    thanks for the replies.
    just a note: using an absolute path didn't fix the issue.
    but i went ahead and created the file /etc/tmpfiles.d/backlight.conf:
    w /sys/class/backlight/intel_backlight/brightness - - - - 95
    and that worked.
    is there a reason for recommending using a tmpfile rather than a service?
    in any case, i'm marking this as solved.
