[SOLVED] Could I broke my SD card with badblocks or dd? [I coudn't]

I found some old, 1GB SD Card and wanted to use it as my EFI partition (well, wanted to check if my EFI system will even see it as I have no idea if it's possible or not). There were some old pictures so I thought - okay, it's working. I've wiped it with
badblocks -wsv
and the final output was
Pass completed, 216640 bad blocks found. (0/0/216640 errors)
which seems to me like ALL blocks are "bad" (corruption error). Well, I thought that maybe badblocks wasn't created to check SD cards. I then used gdisk to get:
Command (? for help): p
Disk /dev/mmcblk0: 1984000 sectors, 968.8 MiB
Logical sector size: 512 bytes
Disk identifier (GUID): 84DBE3FD-1D8A-4E49-80D1-9F9594BB1974
Partition table holds up to 128 entries
First usable sector is 34, last usable sector is 1983966
Partitions will be aligned on 2048-sector boundaries
Total free space is 8158 sectors (4.0 MiB)
Number  Start (sector)    End (sector)  Size       Code  Name
   1            8192         1983966   964.7 MiB   EF00  EFI System
After writing changes to the card (
Command (? for help): w
Final checks complete. About to write GPT data. THIS WILL OVERWRITE EXISTING
PARTITIONS!!
Do you want to proceed? (Y/N): y
OK; writing new GUID partition table (GPT) to /dev/mmcblk0.
The operation has completed successfully.
) I saw no extra partition in my /dev so I ran gdisk again and it prompted:
Caution: invalid main GPT header, but valid backup; regenerating main header
from backup!
Caution! After loading partitions, the CRC doesn't check out!
Warning! Main partition table CRC mismatch! Loaded backup partition table

Warning! One or more CRCs don't match. You should repair the disk!
Partition table scan:

verification and recovery are STRONGLY recommended.
I've tried to
dd if=/dev/urandom
too and all the other options I could think of, just to start over... but... it is just broken now? Was it broken before?
Last edited by smsware (2013-07-17 11:57:24)

It was in some old phone of mine and appears to be as clean as brand new. But
sudo dcfldd if=/dev/urandom of=/dev/mmcblk0 bs=4M count=1
gave
1+0 records in
1+0 records out
as an output so I actually can write into it, right? I played a little with the lock label but it's acting the same. If lock label is set to protect the data, the output is
dcfldd:/dev/mmcblk0: Read-only file system
so it's not the problem. I want to buy new card anyway but I just want to be sure that I will not broke it too. ;-)
I've found this:
The SD/SDHC/SDXC memory cards have a "Protected Area" on the card for the SD standard's security function. The SD Formatter does not format the "Protected Area".
and also (but can't find it again to quote) that you should leave first 8192 sectors (blocks? I'm really bad with hardware) free of modification because the performance would be worse then (but no information about braking it!).

  • [Solved]:How to Manage 2 LAN cards with WICD

    Hi all,
I have recently added an additional lan card to my system. Its configured and runs fine.
However the concern is that I use WICD to manage my broadband internet connection through LAN1 and now I want to use LAN2 to connect to Linux/Win client laptop/desktop to share data and internet connection but WICD can manage one interface at a time and with WICD enabled I cant use Arch network daemon(as per wicd archwiki)... how to manage two cards with WICD enabled??
    Thanks in advance.

Hi and thankls ngoonee, but then I rather use arch network than netcfg coz its not gui, and yep its not possible with wicd to manage two different lan cards simultaneously, tried and tested everything.Anyways i used wicd only coz it showed icon in sys tray(the lan cable keeps movin a lot so icons are really handy to make out if cable is connected or not). Well the only solution I could find is to manage it via arch network daemon, editing rc.conf and stuff...btw wen on my quest I found this archassistant tool, and its quite handy to 'manage' arch system including netcfg.
But m curious though, what more netcfg has to offer than that to default network daemon?
    Thanks in advance
    Cheers.

I bought a 4G SIM activation kit on the advice of a CS rep, who said I could change out the SIM card on my Verizon Droid X (currently in use with a customer loyalty plan) and switch it to a prepaid plan. But now it appears there is no SIM card to switch out. Google search finds several others have asked that question and the Droid X doesn't have a SIM card, apparently. But, the 4G SIM activation kit "Compatibility" tab claims that it is compatible with the Droid X, so what is the real story here? Do I have to send this kit back to you?

No. Call Apple Care and give them the serial number. They may be able to tell you who it is locked to.

    Thanks from Japan!

Please describe the problem in as much relevant detail as possible. The "etrecheck" fad hasn't made that step any less necessary. The better your description, the better the chance of a solution.
For example, if the computer is slow, which specific actions are slow? Is it slow all the time, or only sometimes? What changes did you make, if any, just before it became slow? Have you seen any alerts or error messages? Have you done anything to try to fix it? Most importantly, do you have a current backup of all data? If the answer to the last question is "no," back up now. Ask if you need guidance. Do nothing else until you have a backup.

  • Lenovo 3000 N200 0769 - could I strap a Video Card on it?

    Hi there,
I know this question's been asked before, but I have not found an answer that's relevant to me. I have a 3000 N200 series, version 0769. the original Specs are: Windows Vista Home edition, CPU Intel Celeron 550 2.0 Ghz, 1GB RAM, 160 GB HDD, Onboard Video from the Intel 965M Chipset (64Mb dedicated).
Now, from the original specs, I've upgraded to another 1 GB RAM (identical) and an Intel T7100 Dual-core 1.8 Ghz CPU, and I'm now running Windows 7 32-bit. The reason I've upgraded to the T7100 is because I've seen a variant of the N200 with this CPU.
My question is: Do I have the capability to upgrade my graphics card? I know that some of the 0769 variants have antoher version of the graphics card, I think a 256 MB GeForce. Could I get anything like that up on mine ? Or have I hit the wall when it comes to upgrades?
Please help me, I need a better graphics performance ASAP (work stuff). Also, I don't have the cash for a new notebook (possibly a new motherboard and/or Graphics Card, but no more than that).
    Thank you!!
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

Well, you can't upgrade graphics without swapping the
motherboard for one with Nvidia graphics, which also
had a different heatsink setup to handle extra heat from
GPU. So I doubt a swap would work without modification.
Used motherboard swaps, IMO, are not cost effective.
Ram could go up to 4 GB, with 3 being a good compromise,
and cpu to Core 2 Duo T7500, which would be too minor
a boost over T7100, unless you can find one Cheap.
Probably other cpus that were added later also.
My opinion? Put the money towards a good used laptop
    with the specs you need/want.
Oh, and the weak bios? There are some bios modding communities
out there, but that is a high risk adventure! See this post for an example:

  • [SOLVED] [mpv] Fallback to software decode SLOW with vo_vdpau/vaapi

EDIT 02/01/2014: Since mpv 0.3.0, the opengl renderer, which works perfectly fine with software-decoding, now also works with vaapi/vdpau hardware-decoding, so just setting vo=opengl and hwdec=auto should really be enough to utterly avoid the problems I was having back when I made this post. A lot of the "info" I gave later on in the thread is also actually bogus, I'll tweak that in a second.
I've been reading the documentation for mpv, and there's something I can't quite figure out.
My CPU isn't especially powerful, so it's important for me to be able to use hardware acceleration where possible. I'm using the proprietary ATI driver; VLC works fine with VA-API, and since I discovered libvdpau-va-gl I've been able to get mpv to work using VDPAU. Obviously, some files (*cough*, Hi10P, *cough*) can't be hardware-accelerated, and this is where my problem/question comes in.
In my mpv config file, with
    vo=vdpau
I'm able to play normal h.264 video effortlessly, but when HWaccel isn't available mpv falls back to software-decoding and software scaling (ffmpeg/swscaler, as per the console output). The problem is, with the CPU already working to decode the Hi10P content, my A-V desync skyrockets, and it's all a bit of a mess.
If I play the same Hi10P file with
    vo=opengl
, then it doesn't desync at all. I checked the manpage and it says I can concatenate possible video outputs with a comma, and it will try each in turn. Obviously I'd like the not-hardware-decodable content to be rendered using OpenGL, rather than whatever causes them to get fed to "swscaler". So I set the config line to
    vo=vdpau,opengl
. However - the opengl option never gets used! The non-HW-decodable files still end up being fed to swscaler, and as a result desync wildly, unless I manually set to opengl for that file.
Is someone here familiar enough with mpv to be able to explain why I might not be getting the behaviour I expect from listing multiple video outputs in the config file; or even better, how I can configure mpv to do what I actually want?
If there's somewhere else I should be asking this, please let me know. I couldn't find a dedicated mpv forum or anything (or even an IRC channel for questions), but I could have missed something.
Addition: Here are some console outputs.
    1) Playing an 8-bit h.264 file with vo=vdpau, works fine

So, I had a nice long conversation last night with some of the devs on the IRC channel (that I didn't find first-time-round somehow). I'll summarise this in bullet points:
    >I'm using an ATI card with the proprietary driver
    >I'm exposing VDPAU via a library that uses VA-API underneath
    >the vo_vdpau mode for mpv continues to handle file playback even if the vdpau hardware decoder won't initialise
    >>i.e. vdpau itself calls the software decoder, and then handles the calls to a software renderer
    >because I'm using VDPAU in an indirect "wheels within wheels" library, it's slow as all hell
    Solution:
UPDATE: READ THE POST BELOW, A BETTER SOLUTION HAS BEEN IMPLEMENTED
    >mpv-git has native VA-API support, vo_vaapi
    >compiling and using this works perfectly
    >the vaapi handler is able to much more efficiently handle the calls to software decoders/renderers
    >8bit h.264 files play fullspeed using hardware decoding
    >10bit h.264 files are automatically handed to software-decoding, and play (almost!) as well as they should (i.e. when directly calling vo_opengl or vo_xv)
Note that it's still a little slower than using opengl or xv, which is kind of odd. wm4 on IRC mentioned he might be able to do something about this, by implementing the (hackish, apparently) thing that VLC does, so that vo_vaapi doesn't have to use swscale (slow) before rendering; but I'll wait and see if that pans out.
TL;DR - People using the proprietary ATI driver should compile mpv-git and and use vo=vaapi
@Roberth: I actually did have that enabled, but whether it was or wasn't enabled didn't affect the problem I was having. After all, the problem was with vo_vdpau calling software decoding in an inefficient, roundabout way. vo_vaapi still isn't as efficient at this as it should be, it seems, but it's better than vo_vdpau was on my setup.
@kaszak696: As far as I was aware, sws=0 was the default behaviour, but I do recall forcing that at one point with no effect. Either way, my particular problem is solved/worked around now! Well, almost.

Hi, and welcome to the Palm Support Community.
The T5 User Guide describes the process, starting on page 213.
If you have any problems with the application finding your files, it could be because either the card isn't appropriate for use in the T5 (i.e. regular SD, not SDHC, no larger than 2 GB in size), or the files have DRM (digital rights management) which won't play in RealPlayer for Palm.

  • NI LS CAN Card with SJA1000

    Hi,
I am using PCMCIA Series 2 Low Speed CAN Card with SJA1000 transceiver to communicate with an ECU having a transceiver MCP2551.
But when I try communicating with the ECU using CAN Api's in LabVIEW it says there is transceiver error.
    What could be the problem..??
    I am cluleess..
I am using NI CAN 2.5.2 and LabVIEW 8.5
I have verified that ECU is sending CAN messages, But I am unable to read it through LabVIEW.
    Help!!..
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    Smitha,
First, we need to straighten up some terminology: the SJA1000 is the CAN controller, not the transceiver.  The Low Speed CAN Interface uses a TJA1054A transceiver. The controller handles the transmission and reception of messages; the transceiver operates at the bit level, shifting the digital signal levels to/from the SJA1000 to the higher voltage levelsfound on the CAN bus, among other things.  A quick googling reveals that your MCP2551 transceiver is actually a High-Speed CAN transceiver, not a Low-Speed CAN transceiver.
The low-speed CAN interface will not work with this ECU as it uses different termination, hence the trasnceiver error.
Fortunately, you can change the transceiver on the PCMCIA-CAN interface.  The transceiver is located in the little black box at the end of the dongle, and you can change these dongles for the correct high-speed CAN interface.  You can obtain those dongles here. You'll need the HS/HS variety (or a HS/LS if you have other low-speed devices you want to use on the other port).

  • How can i solve "could not load language and text preference "

how can i solve " could not load language and text preference ".. help everyone...

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a test, not a solution. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
    Step 1
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account.
Enable guest logins* and log in as Guest. For instructions, launch the System Preferences application, select Help from the menu bar, and enter “Set up guest users” (without the quotes) in the search box. Don't use the Safari-only “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac.”
While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your personal files or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.
Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem?
After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.
*Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault, then you can’t enable the Guest account. The “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac” is not the same. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.
    Step 2
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode* and log in to the account with the problem. The instructions provided by Apple are as follows:
Shut down your computer, wait 30 seconds, and then hold down the shift key while pressing the power button.
When you see the gray Apple logo, release the shift key.
If you are prompted to log in, type your password, and then hold down the shift key again as you click Log in.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including wireless networking on certain Macs.  The next normal boot may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
*Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t boot in safe mode.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of steps 1 and 2.

  • I could not pair my bluetooth device with my ipad mini retina display. Is there anyone facing the same problem?

I could not pair my bluetooth device with my ipad mini retina display.
My ipad could not detect the bluetooth device. I do not facing this problem with my iphone and my older ipad on the same bluetooth device. Is there anyone facing the same problem?

Yes I tried pairing with my bluetooth car hands-free set - Not discoverable.
I tried to pair with my bluetooth headset - Also not discoverable.
I have no problem with my other apple products my older ipad2 and my current iphone5.
Just this ipad mini retina display could not discover the above bluetooth device.
Any idea on how to solve this? Thnaks.

  • Is there a way to have two sim cards with one icloud?

I am trying to use an ipad mini and iphone. they both have sim cards with different numbers and I am getting the facetime calls on both devices as well seeing iMessage on both devices. But when i try to send a text out from the ipad it doesn't seem to go. I always get the fail to send message.

So it turns out that I was trying to do something that isn't allowed by Apple. I was assuming, incorrectly it seems, that because the ipad had it's own sim card that I could text anyone. But you can only use the iMessage. The sim card is just for connectivity. So it is all good with my iPad and all is working the way it should.

  • How can i pay on the apple store online with two credit cards, with two different billing addresses

I will be greatful if you could answer me this question...
How can i pay on the apple store online with two credit cards, with two different billing addresses?
I know that you can use two credit cards to pay an item but the problem is that i can only put the billing address of just one of the credit cards, and since the two cards are from different people (my parents) i can't do it. They live in the same place so i don't know if i should just put one of the billing address.
    Thank you.
PS. I don't know if this is the right community to ask this, sorry if i'm wrong.

On the Apple Store "Payment & Pricing" page it states:
Using more than one payment card
You can also combine payment methods to pay for your purchase. Choose from the following combinations of credit cards and Apple Gift Cards:
Credit card(s) - up to two
Apple Gift Card(s) - up to eight
Apple Gift Card(s) + one credit card
During checkout, if you are paying with a gift card issued by a credit card company, you can combine it with one credit card.

  • [Solved] Help Setting Samba Share In Qemu With XP Guest

    Hello all,
After getting around all the quirks of setting an XP guest inside qemu, the only (though, pretty important) thing I can't solve is setting a samba share between the Arch host and the XP guest.
I tried whatever I could think of that's relevant, with no success:
    Qemu is launched with:
    qemu-system-x86_64 -machine type=pc,accel=kvm -cpu host -boot d -m 1024 -net user,smb={my home folder} -net nic,model=virtio -rtc base=localtime -drive file=XP.qcow2,if=virtio -spice port=5900,disable-ticketing,image-compression=off,jpeg-wan-compression=never,zlib-glz-wan-compression=never,playback-compression=off -vga qxl -global qxl-vga.vram_size=67108864 -device virtio-serial-pci -device virtserialport,chardev=spicechannel0,name=com.redhat.spice.0 -chardev spicevmc,id=spicechannel0,name=vdagent -balloon virtio
I installed samba, added a user, and started the service according to the wiki.
I allowed the samba ports in UFW (using the CIFS rule).
Whenever I try accessing the share inside my XP guest (\\10.0.2.4\qemu), I usually end up with a target not found error, or at times, a password prompt that will not accept the samba user/password.
Anything else I forgot to do?
    Thanks, Adam.
    * EDIT *
I somehow missed the section regarding the guest OS able to access the host OS normal samba shares at 10.0.2.2.
Default samba share for home folder works as expected.

    Thanks.
I tried toying with the options a bit more, with no success.
I then decided to try Spice+QXL anyway, and am very happy with it.
Aside from the lengthy compilation of the Qemu version that supports Spice from the AUR, once I got it set up, installing the guest was a breeze.
Using the Spice guest tools for windows, everything was set up very conveniently (virtio for network, hdd, qxl driver, mouse integration etc.).
Responsiveness is much better comparing to previous attempts with "vga std", "vga cirrus" and normal adapter.
Bottom line, I'm sticking with Spice+QXL, seems to work best for me.
