[SOLVED] Device not found and kernel panic

Hi,
I'm having an issue with the kernel. I get this weird error while booting:
Booting the kernel.
:: running early hook [udev]
:: running hook [udev]
:: Triggering uevents...
ERROR: device '' not found. Skipping fsck.
ERROR: Unable to find root device ''.
You are being dropped to a recovery shell
Type 'exit' to try and continue booting
sh: can't access tty: job control turned off
[rootfs /]# _
I don't have the slightest idea what to type in that shell, so I exit (^D) and get an error with its shell, another one and finally a kernel panic. Do I have to report the other two error as well? I think this might be related to a recent change in my syslinux.cfg. I wanted to add hibernation cabability to my arch, so I added "resume=/dev/sda2" (my swap) to kernel options. It should not yield such a result though. As a matter of fact, I get it even if I remove that parameter at runtime. For now, I managed to boot with Fallback Initramfs.
Here is syslinux.cfg, as well:
# Config file for Syslinux -
# /boot/syslinux/syslinux.cfg
# Comboot modules:
# * menu.c32 - provides a text menu
# * vesamenu.c32 - provides a graphical menu
# * chain.c32 - chainload MBRs, partition boot sectors, Windows bootloaders
# * hdt.c32 - hardware detection tool
# * reboot.c32 - reboots the system
# * poweroff.com - shutdown the system
# To Use: Copy the respective files from /usr/lib/syslinux to /boot/syslinux.
# If /usr and /boot are on the same file system, symlink the files instead
# of copying them.
# If you do not use a menu, a 'boot:' prompt will be shown and the system
# will boot automatically after 5 seconds.

Also, don't use "root=/dev/disk/by-uuid/...", that's just wrong. Udev kicks in after the bootloader phase.

And don't forget to mark it as solved.

  • I'm receiving error Boot Device Not Found and Hard disk not exist when I boot up my laptop

I'm receicing the error Boot Device Not Found when i power on my HP G60-235DX laptop.  After following HP's recommended troubleshooting steps, I receive error Hard disk not exist.  Hmmmm....that's a little concerning.  My guess is I need a new hard drive?    I have the 17 recovery disks I made when I setup this laptop, however I'm not sure if they will resolve this issue.  Any suggestions?

One of 3 things has happened, listed from most likely to least likely
    1. Hard drive has died, replace it with one of the same size or larger, then use the HP recovery discs to re-install windows.
2, The motherboard has serious problems. (Replace the notebook)
    3. The hard drive cable that connects it to the motherboard has somehow failed, not very likely. (replace the cable)
Replace the hard drive with a new one and use your recovery discs to get Windows back on it.
Here is your service manual, will show you how to replace the hard drive

  • Arch 0.7, 2.6.17-mm6 and kernel panic

Today I have built a new kernel (2.6.17-mm6), and I got "Kernel panic" - the message I haven't seen for a long, long time.
Freeing unused kernel memory: 152k freed
Time: tsc clocksource has been installed.
    argc == 3
    argv[0]: "/init"
    argv[1]: "root=/dev/discs/disc0/part2"
    argv[2]: "ro"
    Running ipconfig
    kinit: do_mounts
    kinit: name_to_dev_t(/dev/discs/disc0/part2) = dev(0,0)
    kinit: root_dev = dev(0,0)
kinit: failed to identify filesystem /dev/root, trying all
kinit: Cannot open root device dev(0,0)
    Checking init: /sbin/init
    Checking init: /bin/init
    Checking init: /etc/init
    Checking init: /bin/sh
    kinit: init not found!
Kernel panic - not syncing: Attempted to kill init!
I'm not a GNU/Linux newbie, but I'm not also a kernel guru. I think, that the problem is that the kernel can't mount the / filesystem. BUT I have compiled reiserfs into the kernel. And I really don't know, why I'm getting this "Kernel panic" message.
I'm running the old Arch 0.7.
    Does anyone has any idea?
All right, I've fixed it. The problem was in Grub configuration. Before installing 2.6.17 I had used 2.6.11, and my config in /boot/grub/menu.lst was as follows:
    title Arch Linux [2.6.11-pp2]
    root (hd0,0)
    kernel /linux-2.6.11-pp2-c13 root=/dev/discs/disc0/part2 ro
Therefore, when I installed 2.6.17, I added the following lines to this file:
    title Arch Linux [2.6.17-beyond2.2]
    root (hd0,0)
    kernel /linux-2.6.17-beyond2.2-c15 root=/dev/discs/disc0/part2 ro
After I changed the "root=/dev/discs/disc0/part2" to "root=/dev/hda2", the kernel booted without any problems.
I'm happy, that I managed to fix my problem for myself, and that I have gained more experience with Linux kernel.
However, I would have been more happy, if I understood, why "root=/dev/discs/disc0/part2" didn't work in the case of 2.6.17 kernel, while the same thing works well in the case of 2.6.11.

Because the /dev/discs/discx... syntax is a remnant of the "old" devfsd days... udev prolly understands only the /dev/hdx or /dev/sdx naming scheme.

Suddenly the system now recognises that the monitor has a 5-touch input and the installation is running.
    Not sure what solved it:
    - Had Windows check for a frech driver (it was up-to-date)
    - Fiddled around a little in Paint just to see if 5-touch input is working
    - Activated a second display (not touchscreen)
I then looked at the System information screen again, and the number of tocuh point appeared correctly

  • Hard Feezing and Kernel Panics - Early 11 MBP

Hey just wondering if anyone has any insight into this...
I've been experiencing hard freezing and kernel panics on my Early 11 Macbook Pro for several months.  The hard freezing only happens when I wake up my system from sleep.  I'll open the lid and when it happens, within seconds, everything locks up.  No spinning wheel, just frozen machine and I have to do a hard reboot.  I also get random kernel panics as well.
I took it in the the Genius Bar a few weeks ago, they ran tests and said the hardware was all fine and that I should reinstall Lion after a clean format.  Well I did that and still having issues.  Not sure if it's being caused by a 3rd party app...or if I really do have bad hardware after all.
When they did a diagnostic they said that 'soundflower' was showing up in my kernel panic log and that I should find what that is and delete it, so I did.  In my most recent and only kernel panic, shown below, I don't see any 3rd party language anywhere.
Anyone have an idea of what might be causing this?

  • HP Device Not Found Error when trying to print or scan wireless- HP Officejet Pro L7590

Have had HP Officejet Pro L7590 All-In-One Printer for years.  Always worked fine and I had no issues printing via wireless connection.  Several months ago..  Possibly after a Windows 8 update.  From Windows 8 to Windows 8.1 I have not been able to use the printers wireless feature.  When I try to print or scan it shows the printer as offline.  Also get an error message that tells me "HP Imaging device is not found".  I can still print when connected to USB.  Cannot scan or use features of the HP software suite.  I have tried several times to correct.  Reloading the software and drivers several times, but no success.  I just tried again and was able to print the test page wireless, so got all excited and thought I fixed it.  Then tried to print something and got the same error message I have seen in the past.  I have talked to certain supports saying that it may be a firewall setting within Windows.  Any other suggestions?  Thanks

    Hi @rfjones002,
Welcome to the HP Support Forums! I see you are not able to print or scan wirelessly to your HP Officejet L7590 and your computer running the Windows 8.1 Operating system. You get a 'Printer offline' or 'HP Imaging device not found' errors.
I would like you to start with the steps listed below:
Hold down the Windows Logo key () on the keyboard and the 'R' to open the run box, type %temp%
Delete all files and folders from the temp folder. Choose skip if any pop ups appear saying any of the files could not be deleted
Uninstall the software again - Uninstall the Printer Software Instructions
When the uninstall has completed restart the computer
Follow these steps to reset the registry settings and options for Windows Installer.
Hold down the Windows Logo key on the keyboard and the 'R' to open the run box
    In the Open box, type
    msiexec /unregister
    and then click OK.
Hold down the Windows Logo key on the keyboard and the 'R' to open the run box
    In the Open box, type
    msiexec /regserver
    and then click OK
*Note: there is a space between the c and the /
If you have any difficulty with this step, please use this link to perform it another way. Restarting Windows Installer
Run Disk cleanup from Accessories\ System Tool < How to Delete files using Disk Cleanup
Download and install the latest version of Adobe flash player http://www.adobe.com/support/flashplayerflashplayer/downloads.html

  • Photosmart 7515 connect via USB but not wireless, Device not found on Network

Purchased a 7515 all-in-one, was able to setup wirelessly to MacPro but has lost ability to connect wirelessly.  This happened with OS X Lion and nor MountainLion.  Have a TimeMachine Airport.  Printer connects to network but during setup from MacPro, repeatedly get "Device Not Found on Network" after stepping through wireless installation setup screens.  I have reset router, printer, firmware updates, software updates.... at wits end.  I have followed the instructions on the below resource page link with no luck.  Use WPA-PSK encryption (Automatic AES or TKIP) on network and diagnostics on printer pass.
    Please help anyone!
    http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=c02946597&tmp_task=solveCategory&cc=us&dlc=en&la...

It sounds like the Macs and the printer just aren't communicating.
If you press the network icon on the printer, does it indicate it is connected to the network?
I recommend two additional steps that are not listed in the linked document.  The printing system of the Mac may need to be reset as it will clear any software that could be interfering (such as corrupted installations).
Follow the steps as outlined for 10.7 or 10.8 in this document from HP.
The next step is to install the driver package from Apple.  This can be found here.

  • Presario CQ61 - Boot Device not found, Hard dis not exist

Hi i bought my presario CQ61-405AX 2nd hand roughly a year ago and it was almost new, my laptop was running fine, and then it froze, and so i had to turn it off, after i waited 30min for it to unfreeze, it now, when i boot it up, appears with a black screen, with the error

I went onto hp support and followed the prompts until it did a hard disk test and the error, "Hard Disk Not Exist" appeared
I have no idea how to fix it, i am running Windows 7 home premium, and i fear i may have to buy another hard drive

    Hi,
The most likely explanation is that your Hard Drive has failed and will need to be replaced, however as a further test, try the following.
    1.  Create a bootable Ubuntu CD - a guide on creating an Ubuntu CD and the download can be found Here.
    2.  When created, follow the guide on the link below to Try Ubuntu.
    http://www.ubuntu.com/download/help/try-ubuntu-before-you-install
The 'Try Ubuntu' option runs the OS from the CD without the need to install on your HDD.  If this runs Ok ( it will be slow running from a CD ), this would tend to confirm that the problem is with the HDD.

  • Boot device not found, hard disk not exist.... does that mean my computer is dead?

Suspecting that Im in a world of hurt here. I tried turning on my computer and it says "boot device not found" - run in test failed... when I hit F4 and run a hard disk test it says "hard disk not exist". The memory test passes, but under the boot device not found it says in blue "please install an operating system on your hard disk"... and to make matters worse it's making some funny noises when it tries to boot.
Is there any hope at all that this computer will work again? Is there any chance that any of the things I had on my hard disk can be recovered?
    This question was solved.

    You're very welcome, Jonathan.
dv5 still isn't enough info for me to provide the service manual (in case there are differerent ones for the different dv5 models).
However here is the link to the service manual I randomly pulled.
    http://bizsupport1.austin.hp.com/bc/docs/support/SupportManual/c01550108/c01550108.pdf
Assume it is safe to say all dv5 models come with SATA notebook drives.
So, if you want to spring for $15, you can get this enclosure which apparently has very good reviews.
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817182138
From what you are describing (noise and stuff), I would say you don't have much of a chance to recover data but that is up to you if you want to try the enclosure or not.
    Here is what I recommend:
Yank the hard drive, and power on the notebook.
If the odd noise you heard is gone, then you can pretty much safely assume the drive was the cause, and that replacing the drive, and reinstalling the operating system will solve the issue.
If the noise is still there, then there could be another issue, and it might be risky throwing good money after bad.
    Paul
