[SOLVED] DW1510, broadcom-wl and wicd

Having some problems connecting up wirelessly using a DW1510 wireless card (based off the Broadcom BCM4322 chip). I've got access to an ethernet port, so I set up XFCE and wicd using pacman. However, wicd couldn't find any wireless networks - apparently b43 doesn't play nice with this particular chipset, so I took a look around and found that others use the broadcom-wl. I followed the Arch wiki's guide on setting it up, and got a kernel panic, so I rebooted and uninstalled it.
I couldn't find any other way to get the wireless card to work, so I tried to reinstall broadcom-wl, but got this:
broadcom-wl 5.100.82.111-1
( Unsupported package: Potentially dangerous ! )

So, I looked around to see if yaourt had left anything behind:
[motdef@titan ~]$ rmmod wl
ERROR: Module wl does not exist in /proc/modules
[motdef@titan ~]$ modprobe wl
FATAL: Could not read '/lib/modules/3.0-ARCH/kernel/drivers/net/wireless/wl.ko': No such file or directory
[motdef@titan ~]$ sudo modprobe -r wl
Password:
[motdef@titan ~]$ modprobe wl
FATAL: Error inserting wl (/lib/modules/3.0-ARCH/kernel/drivers/net/wireless/wl.ko): Operation not permitted
Apparently modprobe thinks it exists even though the related files don't. I tried rebooting, and now I'm getting errors there, too (sorry about the crude photograph, I couldn't work out how to send the errors to a file):
As I said earlier, b43 isn't compatible with my chipset anyway, so it's not a huge problem, but irritating nevertheless.
I'm really stuck for ideas. I'm not sure if the broadcom-wl package files are actually on my system or not, and I've no idea what's missing from the kernel folder, and what it's got to do with the b43 errors at startup. Any suggestions?

I had b43 and ssb blacklisted, as the wiki suggested.
I just reinstalled Arch from scratch and set up broadcom-wl again. Got another kernel panic after doing "sudo modprobe wl" (and got a picture), and after that I started getting the familiar modprobe and yaourt error messages.
I'll start again and try using b43, though I did try it on my very first attempt and it definitely didn't want to work with the wireless card.
I had the same kernel panic after updating the broadcom-wl driver today. I removed the driver and am now using brcmsmac which is part of the kernel. Maybe you can check that out if its compatible with your card. (See the wiki for more details.)

  • [Partially Solved] ad-hoc network and wicd

I am trying to connect my laptop to the internet through an ad-hoc network with wicd. It dies at obtaining an IP address. Is there a package that I am missing or something?
    Any pointers would be great.

Ok so I got it working from command line from this here:

but I would still like to know how to get netcfg working?
    Thanks

  • [Solved]knetworkmanager and Wicd needs two or more connects to work...

Hi, this is my first topic. I'm not that new in Linux, but new in Arch.
So, previously I ran Ubuntu on my laptop, Acer Extensa 5220. Wlan worked very well with WICD. With Arch its a little bit more difficult to set up a working auto-connected configuration.
When wlan works, it works perfetly with nice speed and no break-downs, disconnections or what ever. But the way to get it started is confusing.
I have tried with knetworkmanager and wicd. The problem is, when I start up,  I get no connection on default, I always have to choose my wlan and connect to it. First, I got a connection, but breaks down several seconds after. The second connect works most of the time, than it works perfectly, as mentioned above. But sometimes I need 3-4 tries to get it working.
The daemons I'm running are networkmanager and dhcbd for knetworkmanager, and wicd and network for wicd. The others are bashed out, according to what method I'm trying. I tried every possible set-up, nothing.
The interfaces are bashed out also, but I tried also both ways. Even with eth1="dhcp" (yes, wlan is eth1, maybe the reason? how can i change this?) and without.
What more infos do you need? As I said, when it goes, it goes perfectly. Only the start is tricky.
Edit: netcfg works, but only for a few seconds, too. Grrrrr.
    Thanks.
    Greetings

the network script is a basic networking script. knetworkmanager and wicd are both front-ends, they write to the same files the network script writes to. all 3 run independently of each other.
This is mostly hardware. There is however, a possibility that the driver setup is not optimal in your Arch system, like it was in Ubuntu, so the connection strength is fluctuating when acquiring the IP and such.
Is this broadcom? eth1 is fine and normal.

If Apple's service database says that your iPhone was replaced, then Apple will no longer provide any service for that phone.
First, get a new SIM from your cell carrier and see if that corrects the problem. If it does not, try the usual steps for addressing software problems: restart, reset, restore.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1430
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1414
If you try restoring from a backup and that doesn't fix the problem, try restoring to factory settings and, if the problem goes away, then sync back your apps and content. You'll lose the app data and settings, but if the problem is due to a corrupt cache or settings file, restoring to factory settings should cure it.
If none of that helps, your device may have developed a hardware fault. Again, Apple will provide no service for it, so you will need to pay some independent repair shop to fix your iPhone.
    Regards.

  • Xfce and wicd

I've discovered to have a strange problem with Xfce and Wicd because when i open wicd client window it freezes and so i can't connect to any access point, in the shell i obtain this output:
    [marco@tokenet ~]$ wicd-client
    Has notifications support True
    Loading...

    Connected.
    Done loading.

Under openbox i've no problem with wicd, only with Xfce this happens, why? Thanks, Marco

Oh dear lord.  Please search the forums for one of the two or three dozen threads on this exact issue.  It's the slim update.

  • [SOLVED] Asus eee 1000H : netcfg and wicd unable to obtain IP

    Hi,
I just installed arch linux on my asus eee 1000h, but I can't get
wireless to work. I installed the packages:
    - wireless_tools
    - netcfg
I have been reading through the beginners guide and the wireless setup guide,
    but still no success.
    I did
    lspci | grep -i net
And found out I had to add the firmware for my card, so I did that and:
    ifconfig wlan0 up
    worked. So I did:
    iwlist wlan0 scan
And found the network I wanted to connect too, so I do:
    iwconfig wlan0 essid network_id key wep_hex_key
But I dont get associated to any access point, so I tried:
    ifconfig wlan0 down
    ifconfig wlan0 up
Sometimes this gets me associated to the access point, however, it seems to
be pretty unstable. Usually it 'looses' it's association after a short period
    of time.
    Then I do:
    dhcpcd wlan0
However, I just get the output
    dhcpcd: version 5.2.2 starting
    dhcpcd: broadcasting for a lease
    dhcpcd: timed out
I check "iwconfig wlan0" at it says it is still associated to the access point.
I have tried netcfg, but it also just get's timed out waiting for a lease.
I've tried to get this to work for a long time now, but can't seem to get it to
work. I've read somewhere that it might be a bug in dhcpcd? If you have a
suggestion for something to try, please keep in mind that I am not at all
familiar with arch linux and explain accordingly.
I installed arch linux because I want a distribution that forces me to learn
more about linux, I just did'nt think it would be this much trouble, been trying
for a couple of days now, I have allready learned alot though.
    Thanks for any reply.
EDIT: I also tried setting the timeout to 120, it did not work
EDIT 2: I tried using netcfg again. It first returned:
    WPA Authentication/Association Failed
I tried again, and it returned:
    DHCP IP lease attempt failed
Does this mean I have to use wpa encryption? I find this
strange as I am connecting to the same network with
my ubuntu machine using wep encryption.

edit your /etc/rc.conf to blacklist all of the modules that interfere with the rt2860sta module:
    MODULES=(!rt2800pci !rt61pci !rt2x00pci !rt2800usb !rt2800lib !rt2x00usb !rt2x00lib)
don't initialize network with any other services:
    #eth0="dhcp"
    #wlan0="dhcp"
    INTERFACES=()
make sure you don't have conflicting daemons running:
    DAEMONS=(syslog-ng dbus wicd netfs crond)
then restart and try again(or go through rmmod and stopping and starting the individual services)
btw... I am using arch+wicd on my eee 1000h to write this post, so if you have any more problems just let me know.
also check out the eee 901 archwiki page it has a lot of good info and links.

  • [Solved] Virtual Box and wicd issue ?

    Hey guys,
I have been using arch for like about a year now.  I have slowing converting my family members across by install on their machines.  But I have experience a new problem the other day.  My brother has two computers a laptop that I have put arch & kdemod 4 in January.  His also has a desktop with a windows which has just craped itself, so I said time to arch it !.
He needs xp for some programs (that don't like wine) so i have install virtualbox on his laptop no problems.  But after successfully installing arch & kdemod 4 on the desktop I have tried 3 times to install virtualbox.  The Problem I have is after installing the binaries as per wiki wicd stops working completly.
wicd cannot get ip address, when I trying connect via wireless error message is "bad password"
So something is going wrong with the bridging.

Mac Tzu: No, you don't need to bridge networks in rc.conf/conf.d anymore. You just need to chose the setting in VirtualBox.

  • [SOLVED] BCM4313: broadcom-wl problem, I can not set any ESSID

Hi guys I'm experiencing a weird problem with my laptop wireless card, a Broadcom 4313. I have installed the broadcom-wl driver as suggested in the Wiki and everything went smoothly during the installation, I can properly load the module with modprobe
    [marco@zonzock ~]$ lsmod | grep wl
    wl 1944193 0
    lib80211 3966 2 wl,lib80211_crypt_tkip
And checking the system log for any possible kernel error (with dmesg) I get:
    wl 0000:03:00.0: PCI INT A -> GSI 16 (level, low) -> IRQ 16
wl 0000:03:00.0: setting latency timer to 64
    lib80211_crypt: registered algorithm 'TKIP'
    eth1: Broadcom BCM4727 802.11 Hybrid Wireless Controller 5.60.48.36
So everything seems fine, in fact if I try a sudo iwconfig I get:
    lo no wireless extensions.
    eth0 no wireless extensions.
    eth1 IEEE 802.11 ESSID:"" Nickname:""
    Mode:Managed Frequency:2.412 GHz Access Point: Not-Associated
    Bit Rate:8 Mb/s Tx-Power:24 dBm
    Retry min limit:7 RTS thr:off Fragment thr:off
    Encryption key:off
    Power Management:off
Link Quality=5/5 Signal level=0 dBm Noise level=0 dBm
Rx invalid nwid:0 Rx invalid crypt:0 Rx invalid frag:0
    Tx excessive retries:0 Invalid misc:0 Missed beacon:0
And now the weird thing, I can't choose any ESSID!!Look at this:
    [marco@zonzock ~]$ sudo iwconfig eth1 essid test
    [marco@zonzock ~]$ sudo iwconfig
    lo no wireless extensions.
    eth0 no wireless extensions.
    eth1 IEEE 802.11 ESSID:"" Nickname:""

    Bit Rate:8 Mb/s Tx-Power:24 dBm

Link Quality=5/5 Signal level=0 dBm Noise level=0 dBm
Rx invalid nwid:0 Rx invalid crypt:0 Rx invalid frag:0
    Tx excessive retries:0 Invalid misc:0 Missed beacon:0
So I can't do anything...I'm stuck there, and I couldn't solve my problem even googleing around.
Just to do some further test I have tried to change the power management mode (if you look before is set to off and as you can see below I can change the mode without problems so in some way the driver is partially working
    [marco@zonzock ~]$ sudo iwconfig eth1 power on
    [marco@zonzock ~]$ sudo iwconfig
    lo no wireless extensions.
    eth0 no wireless extensions.
    eth1 IEEE 802.11 ESSID:"" Nickname:""
    Mode:Managed Frequency:2.412 GHz Access Point: Not-Associated
    Bit Rate:8 Mb/s Tx-Power:24 dBm

Link Quality=5/5 Signal level=0 dBm Noise level=0 dBm
Rx invalid nwid:0 Rx invalid crypt:0 Rx invalid frag:0
    Tx excessive retries:0 Invalid misc:0 Missed beacon:0
What can I do to solve this problem? On windows 7 I can connect without problems, the laptop is new and I'm a but frustrated now..I'm not using my NVIDIA hybrid graphic card since linux support isn't provided, I wouldn't like having other problems with the wireless too...
I am sorry for the long post but I wanted to give you as many informations as I can on this problem! Thanks a lot

You need to be root to see your essid, if you are not root the driver does not show you all the informations...this is a problem i.e. for programs like conky.
    (i've mapped eth1 to wlan0)
What is you actual problem? Are you using any kind of networkmanager?
I've solved this problem one hour ago...using other boards I could set any essid I wanted even if I didn't  set any keys, with this driver in order to set the essid I need to set the key before...just for the record network manager works far better than wicd when using this driver
    Thanks for your answer!

  • [SOLVED] sda3 = 100% full, and I can't figure how to clean it out.

It turns out my sda3 partition is 100% full.  My immediate reaction to this apart from being irritated was to clear my pacman cache, thinking this would solve the problem.  It didn't.  I've also tried pruning out some egregiously large log files but that doesn't do anything either.
Apart from clearing the cache and getting rid of log files though I'm not sure what else I can do to get this thing trimmed down to size.  Presumably someone out there has run into a similar situation and solved it?  Any advice on how to deal with it?  Thanks for your time, everyone.

Oddly enough, I just came home with intent to keep hacking away at this issue and I found that I was able to run xinit.  I hadn't been able to do that before due to this disk space issue but I certainly won't say no to a little deus ex machina action.

  • [SOLVED] Ubuntu One, networkmanager vs wicd

ubuntuone-control-panel-qt works, and I can login to Ubuntu One, but no files are synced.
    $ u1sdtool -s
    State: READY
    connection: With User Not Network
    description: ready to connect
    is_connected: False
    is_error: False
    is_online: False
    queues: IDLE
    $ cat .cache/ubuntuone/log/syncdaemon-exceptions.log
dbus.proxies - ERROR - Introspect error on org.freedesktop.NetworkManager:/org/freedesktop/NetworkManager: dbus.exceptions.DBusException: org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.Spawn.ChildExited: Launch helper exited with unknown return code 1
I'm on a wireless network and using wicd, is that the problem? Do I have to change from wicd to NetworkManager for it to work?
This bug might be related Bug #456292 “can't connect under Xubuntu” : Bugs : Ubuntu One Client
Last edited by sveinelo (2012-07-08 21:13:24)

Removing networkmanager fixed the problem. Ubuntu One now working with wicd
    sudo pacman -Rs networkmanager
Now, how do I mark this as SOLVED? Hmm...

  • Broadcom wl with wicd

    Hello All,
I have a broadcom card that only works with the wl kernel driver. I was running an older version of wicd (two updates ago) and I could connect to any network such as WPA WEP and wired. Since the newest two updates, I can not connect to secured networks only unsecured ones. ( and wired, but I think that is a different problem) I suspect that I have a problem with my wpa_supplicant with wicd, but I am unsure. is there anything special that I need to do to connect with the wl driver in WICD?
I dont know what files are associated with this problem, but please let me know what you need.
    Thanks,
    Levi

The card is a BCM4322 802.11a/b/g/n. For the driver I used http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Broadcom_BCM4312 that guide. When the system boots, I have the kernel wl autoloaded, but I can only connect to unsecured wireless networks. I just realized that I had not added ieee80211_crypt_tkip to the modules loaded at boot, would that allow it to connect?

  • Broadcom 4312 and DNS lookup

I installed and configured broadcom-wl driver and set wireless connection via wicd. Everything works, but web pages take a long time to load (looking up...). This doesn't happen in Windows nor in Linux wired connection. I use Arch 64.
    Any ideas?
    PS: sorry about my English

My Broadcom 4322 works fine (relatively speaking) with hybrid-portsrc-x86_32-v5_10_79_10.tar.gz and these patches:
    http://bugs.gentoo.org/attachment.cgi?id=184151
    http://bugs.gentoo.org/attachment.cgi?id=184152
    http://bugs.gentoo.org/attachment.cgi?id=187456
...except DHCP; dhcpcd just keeps broadcasting and never seems to get any replies. But it works with a static address.

  • White Macbook 2006 random shutdown solved removed cpu heatsink and more

I picked up a cheap macbook from a secondhand retailer for $300 and it regularly shutdown, froze, restarted as well as the grey kernel panic screen completely random no real pattern. I set about trying to solve the problem swapping ram and hard drive with my identical 2006 macbook (which I had similar problems with last year, fixed that one with a new battery connector cable). The ram and hard drive made no difference so I downloaded istat menus to see if any combination of cpu voltage, current and temperature were causing the random shutdowns. It seemed when the temperature reached certain values the computer would shutdown or freeze(around 30 to 50 degrees). I'd read on other forums about faulty cpu temperature diodes so I reapplied heatsink compound to the cpu heatsink and checked all the wiring for shorts but nothing seemed to solve the problem. I was ready to retire the computer and use it for spares for my other macbook when needed but I pulled the keyboard off one more time and tried something completely radical. This fix requires some forward planning and software installation but it has completely solved my Random shutdowns completely.
for instructions see my next post *Fix for random shutdowns white macbook*

Ok this is not for the non technical person but it is quite a simple process with the right instructions.
This first step is very important install the software coolbook($10) and fan control (Free)( not smc fan control). Set up coolbook to operate the cpu at the lowest speed and voltage for both power adapter and battery(1002MHz and .95Volts). Remove the keyboard to access the computer logic board (instructions can be found at iFixit). Remove the four screws and two connectors holding the heatsink to the logicboard and gently lift the heatsink out (very important that you leave the fan screwed in and connected). Close the computer back up if you wish to test just gently connect the keyboard and loosly sit the keyboard back in. Restart and reset the pram immediately. Let the computer boot up and then open system preferences and configure Fan Control to your liking. So far no random shutdowns for over a week (was getting many a day previously.

  • [SOLVED] Problem with cron and unison

I've got a very strange problem I cannot solve.
I have set unison to synchronize my laptop (mercure) against my home computer (jupiter). It works really fine.
I can run it from the terminal:
    unison -batch CERTES
    and it runs good.
I have set ssh keys so that id doesn't ask me for a password. And that runs fine too because if I do ssh to jupiter, I log in without any password.
That's what the unison profile looks like:
    [jordi@mercure ~]$ cat .unison/CERTES.prf
    root = /home/jordi/CERTES
    root = ssh://[email protected]//home/jordi/Macbook
    After this, everything is ok.
Then I set a cron job so this is done once an hour everyday using crontab -e:
    0 * * * * /usr/bin/unison -batch CERTES
And every hour I receive this mail:
    Contacting server...
    Permission denied, please try again.
    Permission denied, please try again.
    Permission denied (publickey,password).
Fatal error: Lost connection with the server
Ok then, this seems like cron can't log into jupiter with ssh as I thought. So I modify /etc/ssh/sshd_config to put this option:
    PermitUserEnvironment yes
I do the same on mercure, even if I think it's useless, but...
I always receive the same error and I can't get the 2 folders synchronzed.
Before my hard drive crashed a week ago, I had unison running by cron and it was working nice, but now I'm unable to do it again...
Does anyone has a clue about what's happening and how to solve it?

  • [SOLVED] Problem with FGLRX and Ati HD4650

Hi! I'm fede1587 and I'm a new user of Archlinux (but not a new user of Linux). I love it and the KISS philosophy.
Four days ago I intalled the new version of Arch but unfortunately I have a very big problem and after 4 days of work I have not been able to solve it.
I have a Sony Vaio VGN-FW41J with a ATI HD4650. I need Ati proprietary drivers, because with the open source ones, the laptop become too hot. After installing the catalyst legacy pakages (234k, catalyst-utils and catalyst-hook) both from AUR and from the repository (following the great guide in ArchWiki) and configuring, when I lanunch startx, sometimes Gnome starts and sometimes I got black screen with horizontal lines.
I'm searching for solutions from 4 days and I read a lot of topic, and I try a lot of things, but nothing!
Accourding to the various threads, I have:
    1) Load the module fglrx
    2) Blacklist the radeon module
    3) Re-run mkinitcpio
    4) Run aticonfig --initial
    5) Run aticonfig --acpi-services=off
    6) Add nomodeset to grub
After I tried to change kernel (thinking about some incompatibilities). I installed linux-lts, and I try with this kernel, but I have the same issue. I also try whit Bridge Linux, but nothing changed.
This is the only output found in my error.log (Xorg.X.log is empty):

Thanks a lot for the help and sorry for my bad english.
