[SOLVED] Encrypted UEFI Install on Zenbook Prime (ux31a)

Hello everyone.  I've been following the above wiki pages trying to get an encrypted root setup on my new zenbook prime, but have run into an issue.  I've managed to get grub2 installed and setup with UEFI properly, however I cannot boot.  I've added the proper hooks to mkinicpio.conf and have confirmed everything I know to confirm, but I continue running into the error displayed below.  My zenbook boots right into the Arch grub2, but when it tries to boot it:
error: no such device: e449f501-1da6-43ab-a90b-c938b2eded26.
Loading Linux core repo kernel ...
error: disk 'cryptouuid/4bfe8dac264e464c951b3efc9bbe918a' not found.
Loading initial ramdisk...
error: you need to load the kernel first.
I have the install CD handy so I've tried repeatedly to reconfigure grub according to the wiki pages, copy the .efi file, etc. but to no avail.  Can someone point me in the right direction?  It feels like I'm so close but just missing one simple step.
Thanks for any insight you can provide.

Ok, so I'm thinking this has to do with the fact that I haven't created a separate /boot partition, (though I thought I could have everything needed installed to the EFI partition).  I went through the install again a second time because I realized I missed the filesystem entry in MODULES inside /etc/mkinicpio.conf, however I ended up with the same error.
Shortly, I'm going to try creating all this with a separate /boot partition.  The only thing I'm lost on is how to actually get the /boot data onto the actual /boot partition, because following the beginner's guide, /boot is not even mounted.  I can see a way of easily getting that data there (i.e., mount /dev/sda2 [which would be my boot partition] to an arbitrary mount point while chroot'd, and copying all /boot data there).
I'll report back here on how that works out.  If anyone has any pointers, let me know.

  • [Solved] Asus Zenbook Prime (UX31A-DB51) Function key issues

I recently purchased this machine, and the final issue I have with is that the Function keys are not working. Looking at the wiki I saw that it should work out of the box with 3.4.4-2, and I'm on 3.4.5-1 and have issues with it. Following the instructions on building a patched module led to kernel panics.
Thanks in advance for any help

Hi, I bought the UX32VD a few weeks ago. Most of the steps, mentioned in the article about the UX31A apply to the UX32VD too. I don't know what your problems are. All the steps are explained.
    [ 8.039202] asus_wmi: Can't find DSTS
Just patch the kernel with the mentioned fix, or use the dkms variant. This will fix the can't find DSTS issue. After that, the asus-nb-wmi (or sth. like that) module will be loaded successfully, which makes most of the function keys work (except the screen brightness keys). The only thing remaining is to use the supplied hackarounds to be able to change the screenbrightness.
After these steps, I created a .Xmodmap to remap the automatic kbd. backlight key and the touchpad disable key to XF86MonBrightnessDown (or so .. can't remember the exact name) and XF86MonBrightnessUp and respectively mapped the shortcuts with xfce4-keyboard-settings (XF86MonBrightnessDown to the command backlight down, XF86MonBrightnessUp to backlight up). Unfortunately, sometimes this is a little bit buggy. The scan codes change randomly on some reboots, eg: one time it gets recognized as XF86MonBrightnessUp, and a few keypresses later as something different.
Hope they fix this issue with the 3.5 kernel, and eventually get the actual screenbrightness buttons to work.

  • HP Pavilion P2-1013w Desktop PC - UEFI Install with WIndows 8.1 Pro RTM causes hang

I have an HP Pavilion P2-1013W Desktop PC with the UEFI enabled bios.
With Windows 8.1 Pro RTM Build (MSDN Download available now from Microsoft - Released September 17th 2013 - Again,. this is 8.1, a.k.a. Windows Blue RTM)
SATA Mode is set to AHCI
    BIOS is UEFI Enabled
I boot from the Windows 8.1 Pro USB Installation Media using the UEFI: USB Storage option, Windows Setup starts. I get to the partitions screen, remove the partitions then click New. Windows Setup creates the 4 Partitions (Recovery, MSR, System and Primary) as expected.
When I click Next and Setup begins to copy files, the system locks up. The mouse pointer stops moving, keyboard is unresponsive, and it will sit at 0% for as long as it's left on.
After checking, Microsoft makes a few notes about the requirements. Setup will not run if the OS does not match the UEFI 'bitness'. If this were the issue, I would get a text-mode message about it being the wrong architecture. I don't get that. I get the install wizard, so it is supported.
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/hh824898.aspx Has more information.
And I suspect this is a version problem as the original Windows 7 install was a UEFI install, not Legacy. It appears the BIOS firmware I have installed is not compatible with Windows 8.1.
Will an update be made available? Or will I have to revert to WIndows 7 UEFI, and upgrade?

  • [SOLVED] Arch Linux install on UEFI motherboard (Asus UX31A)

    Hello all,
I am new to Arch Linux (moving over from Mint) and I am having an enormous amount of trouble with booting for UEFI.  I go through all the command line installation steps and get to the step where you install and configure a bootloader.  I have followed everything step-by-step up and cannot seem to get anything to boot, I get the motherboard settings menu instead.  I've tried GRUB, rEFInd, and Gummiboot and all three have not worked for me.  Is there any hope for configuring a bootloader?  I am used to Mint/Ubuntu creating it for me.
    Thanks

srs5694 wrote:It shouldn't matter from where you launch the EFI shell, although that will affect device names. If you boot a USB flash drive with an EFI shell on it, chances are fs0: will be the USB flash drive itself. Your rEFInd, though, should be installed on your hard disk, and therefore on another device -- probably fs1:, although it could be fs2:, fs3:, or some other number. If the only filesystem you can find is fs0:, then that indicates something is wrong with your hard disk setup -- perhaps your ESP's filesystem is damaged, or maybe there's something wrong with the partition table.
I followed the steps in the beginners installation guide to create my file system starting with:
    cgdisk /dev/sda1
I create 4 Linux filesystem partitions with this, then I run:
    mkfs.vfat -32 /dev/sda1
    mkfs.ext4 /dev/sda2
    mkfs.ex4 /dev/sda3
    mkswap /dev/sda4
I then toggle the boot flag of my FAT32 formatted ESP (/dev/sda1):
    parted
    toggle
    1
    boot
if it is not turned on according to the output of:
    parted
    print
After that I mount the drives and turn swap on:
    mount /dev/sda2 /mnt
    mkdir -p /mnt/home
    mount /dev/sda3 /mnt/home
    mkdir -p /mnt/boot/efi
    mount /dev/sda1 /mnt/boot/efi
    swapon /dev/sda4
I install my base system (without changing /etc/pacman.d/mirrorlist) by running:
    pacstrap -i /mnt base
Finally I generate my fstab after the Arch installation:
    genfstab -U -p /mnt >> /mnt/etc/fstab
I then check the fstab and I get the result from my previous post and according to the guide it is ok because everything but my root partition has a 0 or 2.

What could have gone wrong here?  This is quite frustrating to me and I really want to use Arch.

  • [SOLVED] full disk encryption uefi motherboard queston about /boot

I a little confused got a new pc and I'll be installing in the uefi manner with lvm on luks and  with the efi system partition having the kernel and initramfs copied over will that completely serve as my boot partition or do i still need an unencrypted /boot?

re: Using an ESP that's separate from /boot:
WonderWoofy wrote:The only time this makes sense is if you are using something that can actually read the /boot partition (that is ext{2,3,4}, btrfs, etc.).  I think that all the UEFI bootloaders can do this, and of the boot managers rEFInd can do this as well.
The capabilities of boot managers and boot loaders are more complex than this:
The ELILO boot loader relies on the EFI to read the kernel and initrd file. Normally, this means that they must reside on a FAT partition (usually the ESP), although if some other tool has loaded an EFI filesystem driver, that filesystem can be used. The ELILO documentation refers to a capability to read kernels from something other than ELILO's partition, but I've never figured out how to get that to work. (The documentation doesn't say how to specify another partition -- a frustrating omission.)
Fedora's patched GRUB Legacy boot loader has built-in drivers that enable it to read ext2/3/4fs, ReiserFS, XFS, JFS, and I believe Btrfs, as well as several non-Linux filesystems (I think these include FAT, HFS+, and ISO-9660, but I'm not positive of that). It can't handle LVM, RAID, or encrypted setups, though.
The GRUB 2 boot loader can read everything that GRUB 2 can, plus LVM and RAID setups. I'm not sure about encryption, offhand.
The kernel's EFI stub loader relies on the firmware to read its initrd file, and so can read whatever the firmware can read -- just FAT by default, but this can be extended via an EFI driver.
The gummiboot boot manager relies on the EFI to read the kernel, and gummiboot provides no means to launch drivers. It's also restricted to reading files from the partition from which it was launched. Thus, as a practical matter, gummiboot works only if the kernel is on the ESP, or at least on a FAT partition, or HFS+ on a Mac. (It's possible to rig up a system in which rEFIt or rEFInd launches gummiboot from a non-FAT partition, but that's overly-complex, IMHO.)
The rEFInd boot manager relies on the EFI to read the kernel. Unlike most other tools, though, rEFInd can launch EFI drivers prior to scanning filesystems. It can also launch kernels from any partition that the EFI can read. rEFInd ships with drivers for ext2/3fs, ext4fs, ReiserFS, HFS+, and ISO-9660, but not for XFS, JFS, or Btrfs. If you find or write another EFI filesystem driver, rEFInd could launch it. AFAIK, there are no EFI drivers for LVM, RAID, or Linux encryption systems. Thus, as a practical matter, rEFInd can launch kernels stored on the most popular Linux filesystems, but not from LVM, RAID, or encrypted partitions.
The rEFIt boot manager (rEFInd's predecessor) is not ideal for launching Linux kernels directly, although it can be done if you jump through enough hoops. It comes with ext2/3fs and ReiserFS drivers, but not the other drivers that rEFInd supports. (You could use rEFInd's drivers with rEFIt, though.) It can launch a boot loader from any partition that the EFI can read.
I realize that's a lot of detail to take in, and it makes it impossible to draw broad conclusions about filesystem support of boot loaders vs. boot managers. Instead, though, I'd say that they can be ordered, from most flexible to least flexible, as: GRUB 2, GRUB Legacy, rEFInd, rEFIt, ELILO, and finally gummiboot.

  • [SOLVED] Encrypted install without LVM

I always installed my encrypted systems without LVM, on Debian, Ubuntu and openSUSE. Basically my partition scheme is:
    /boot
    /swap
    /home
I've been trying to run the system for 2 days without success.
After install+reboot, a password is asked for the "main" disk (configured on /etc/default/grub) and then everything hangs. I press Ctrl+C then after being asked for the root password (and typing it) I can log in and manually mount the other partitions, but no DE can load.
I'll put my install scheme so you can understand better, and, if requested, I can upload my conf files such as grub, mkinitcpio etc.
    Install process:
    # loadkeys br-abnt2
    # modprobe dm-crypt
    # cfdisk
    After creating all partitions:
    # cryptsetup -c twofish-xts-plain64 -y -s 512 luksFormat /dev/sdaX
    # cryptsetup luksOpen /dev/sdaX cr_sdaX
    # mkfs.ext4 /dev/mapper/cr_sdaX
    # mkswap /dev/mapper/cr_sda3
    # swapon /dev/mapper/cr_sda3
    # mkfs.ext4 /dev/sda1
    # mount /dev/mapper/cr_sda2 /mnt

    # mount /dev/sda1 /mnt/boot
    # mount /dev/mapper/cr_sda4 /mnt/home
    # nano /etc/pacman.d/mirrorlist
    # pacstrap /mnt base base-devel
    # genfstab -L -p /mnt >> /mnt/etc/fstab
    # arch-chroot /mnt
    # nano /etc/locale.gen (same locales as the 1st time)
    # locale-gen
    # nano /etc/locale.conf
    # nano /etc/vconsole.conf (KEYMAP=br-abnt2)
    # ln -s /usr/share/zoneinfo/Brazil/East /etc/localtime
    # mkinitcpio -p linux
    # nano /etc/mkinitcpio.conf
Now I edit '/etc/mkinitcpio.conf' and add 'keymap' and 'encrypt' to the HOOKS line, right before 'filesystems' and then rebuild the image.
    # echo junior > /etc/hostname
    # passwd
    # pacman -S grub
    # grub-install /dev/sda
Now, in '/etc/default/grub' I edit the line 'GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX=”"' to 'GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX=”cryptdevice=/dev/sda2:main”' then I run:
    # grub-mkconfig -o /boot/grub/grub.cfg
    #exit
    #umount -R /mnt
    #reboot
Now, after install, the system asks me for the /dev/sda2 password, it says it's clean, than hangs. I press Ctrl+C, it says I can continue/rescue/etc, I type my root password and then mount the other partitions.
Funny thing is that it can't mount /home and after I mount it manually it tries to continue to boot, but hangs again. Then again I press Ctrl+C and I log in as root. I also isntalled xorg/nvidia/xfce to see if it loads after manually mounting the partitions but no success, I have to start it manually.
So, if any of you successfuly installed Arch with an encrypted FS w/o a LVM = PLEASE!! HELP!
    Regards.

Yes, although I think the ro option should be changed to rw:
    GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX="cryptdevice=/dev/sda2:cryptroot root=/dev/mapper/cryptroot ro"
I got to the point where it asks me for the / password and then for /home too, but it hangs there, home is not being mounted nor swap. I'm on the system now but as root and with xfce.

  • [SOLVED]How to install Arch Linux UEFI to dual-boot?

    Hey,
so I have a Lenovo G50-70 on which I want to have a Windows-Arch dualboot. I followed the Beginner's Guide, installed Arch but ended up with an inaccessible Windows. I could boot into Windows from the BIOS utility, but not from the gummiboot bootloader.
The guide said if I wanted to dual-boot, I must leave windows EFI partition alone, which I did. I have my Windows partitions set up the Windows way, with the system reserved and EFI and recovery partitions, and I have my Windows partition of course and a data partition. After that I have some unallocated space, on which I made the Arch partitions, /dev/sda6 as an ESP partition for the EFI files, /dev/sda7 as root, /dev/sda8 as swap and /dev/sda9 as /home. The install process went without any error, then I made some configurations and installed dosfstools & efibootmgr. After that, I installed gummiboot and ran "gummiboot --path=/boot install". After that I created the configuration files exactly like in the guide, unmounted the partitions, rebooted and saw that there's no (easy) way getting into Windows. So my question is: how can I install Arch to have a working dual-boot system?
Thanks for any help in advance!

    Hey,
Writing to you on my working dual-boot with ArchLinux (Windows 8.1 64-Bit, UEFI)
So first step I've done is creating free space of an existing partition in the windows disk management (windows button and r and then type diskmgmt.msc). At this step, you have to record which partition your efi partition is (just take a look at your efi partition and remember the mb of this partition for later)
Then go into the uefi settings (bios) and disable secure boot as well as fast boot, otherwise it could cause data crash.
Boot your Arch Live CD and follow the beginners guide all the way along till you reach the disk management.
If you want to have swap, you can create yours right now, should be a primary partition of about 4gigs.
Next partition is gonna be your home, system partition (I've didn't created two partitions for home and for the system but you could do this as well as just go with one partition) this partition gonna be formatted in ext4
Next step, you have to mount your windows-efi partition in /boot/efi but don't format it dont remeber if it asks you how to use the partition but if so, just use as fat32.
After the disk management go ahead with your arch installation and follow the beginners guide. (Make sure you're using the grub bootloader)
After finishing the installation, restart your system, hopefully you will recognize the opening grub menu. (but dont scare, windows wont show in the grub menu at this time so you have to boot your arch)
Arrived in arch linux type the command
    grub-mkconfig -o /boot/grub/grub.cfg
Reboot and your done with your Arch Linux, Windows 8 dual boot, hopefully

  • [Solved] Dual UEFI Booting Arch against pre-existing Ubuntu install

    Hi All,
I'm new to Arch Linux and have just managed to install it on my T530 Lenovo laptop along side a pre-existing Ubuntu installation.
However, although I did consult the dual boot posting and article here on the site beforehand, those articles seemed to be about installing Grub. Since I already have it up and working, I was nervous about deleting it and so potentially loosing my working Ubuntu installation.
I tried installing mounting my pre existing /boot/efi partition but the pre-existing vmlinuz-linux file (no doubt from my Ubuntu installation) prevented it from working. My solution was to create the boot folder on the same partition as my Arch installation.
I now have an installation that works (kind of) however, it appears each time I boot up, I have to edit the Grub entry for my Arch installation to update the UUID Grub points to to get it to load up Arch. I can't find where the actual file being loaded in Grub resides (the file that it appears generates this script, is itself built from a series of predefined variables).
I admit I am playing at the moment - I'm keen to get to grips with this distro and am up for considering all options including deleting and starting again to learn to get it set up correctly. My questions are:
How should I have done this so that my Arch linux distro was loaded via Grub called by the UEFI and had the same booting file structure as the already existing Ubuntu installation (using the BOOTLOADER partition and the /boot/efi folders on it)
How do I edit the Grub file for my Arch distro so it stays edited (no more retyping all the UUIDs each time I load it up
Is there a way to get to the installation I currently have to an the more ideal state
Details taken thanks to the bootrepair application are here:

    Thanks and regards,

I don't think there are any Ubuntu kernel images on your EFI system partition (they are in /boot, not /boot/efi).
If you want Arch to boot in an EFI system you should mount /boot (rather than /boot/efi) to the EFI system partition.
To do this, copy the /boot folder over to /dev/sda1 and add it to your /etc/fstab (in Arch):
    /dev/sda1 /boot vfat rw,relatime,discard,nodev,nosuid,noexec,fmask=0022,dmask=0022,codepage=437,iocharset=iso8859-1,shortname=mixed,errors=remount-ro 0 2
It's probably best to install & configure GRUB from Arch rather than Ubuntu because Arch mounts /boot to the ESP while all other distributions mount /boot/efi so the results may get confusing (ie, GRUB may create menu entries to boot Ubuntu with your Arch kernel and vice versa); also the Arch kernel image is booted read-write whereas most other kernel images are booted read-only.
    https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/GRUB#UEFI_systems
I find the os-prober script can fail sometimes so this is probably your problem here.
Personally, I use gummiboot to boot my Debian system by copying the kernel image & initial ramdisk to the EFI system partition using these commands in Debian (this would also work in Ubuntu):
    # mount /dev/sda1 /mnt
    # cp /vmlinuz /initrd.img /mnt
Then I make a gummiboot menu entry; your Ubuntu entry would look like this:
    title Ubuntu
    linux /vmlinuz
    initrd /initrd.img
    options root=/dev/sda2 ro
Add any kernel parameters after "ro" and make an entry for Arch as well (you may also need to configure /boot/loader/loader.conf as per the ArchWiki page) & install gummiboot from Arch using:
    # gummiboot install
You can then create a post-install script at /etc/kernel/postinst.d/zz-update-gummiboot in your Ubuntu system to copy over the kernel image & initrd to the ESP whenever the kernel is updated:
    #!/bin/sh
    mount /dev/sda1 /mnt
    cp /vmlinuz /initrd.img /mnt/
    umount -R /mnt
    Make this executable:
    # chmod +x /etc/kernel/postinst.d/zz-update-gummiboot
This method will only work if you have /boot mounted to the EFI system partition (as outlined in the Beginner's Guide).

  • [SOLVED] Trying to install GRUB2 on a UEFI system

    Hey all,
I have an MSI Sandy Bridge motherboard which has a 64-bit UEFI.  It comes with a shell for what it's worth, but I cannot seem to get the final step in GRUB2's installation to work.
Here's exactly what I run into:
I got GRUB2 properly configured, load the efivars kernel module (verified that it is loaded by checking lsmod), and then issue the command:
    efibootmgr --create --gpt --disk /dev/sdb --part 1 --write-signature --label "GRUB2" --loader "\\EFI\\grub\\grub.efi"
The issue I get in return is:
Fatal: Couldn't open either sysfs or procfs directories for accessing EFI variables.
    Try 'modprobe efivars' as root.
Problem is, that was already done.  I tried chrooting into the installation directory, and I am met with the same issue.  I am using the official arch installation media since it was recently updated and should be able to do EFI stuff, I'm thinking, but maybe I'm wrong.  I'm in the process of downloading Ubuntu's 11.10 alpha 3 installation media since 11.04 did not work either (couldn't load the module since the live cd was out of date, and the downloaded efibootmgr included efivars for a different kernel version I guess).
Either way, anyone have any other tips for me?  Is there any way I can utilize the EFI shell that came with my motherboard to make this work instead?
Last edited by mrmylanman (2011-08-20 21:30:48)

I just used Ubuntu 11.10 Alpha 3 to do the efibootmgr command, and it did succeed, and I have a UEFI listing for GRUB2 now, however I guess my motherboard handles this a little weird, and I have to go into the config screen to actually load GRUB.  Strange.  Sounds like it's my motherboard at this point and not Arch.  Carry on

  • [SOLVED] Encryption hook doesn't prompt for key

I'm trying to dual boot an encrypted arch (64bit luks encryption without lvm) and windows 8 on uefi. • Creating a partition for UEFI (Install Help)

Hi everyone. I've been trying to search for an answer for this for a while and have came up blank. I'm ready to switch over to Arch Linux officially, after testing it in VirtualBox for a while. However, I'm a tad confused on some of the documentation for the partition setup for UEFI motherboards.
I understand partitioning can be more of a 'personal preference' type of thing, but was wondering if someone might be able to assist me in how it should be setup.....
Reading from https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Un … n_in_Linux, should I create the partition like so or should there be a separate boot partition for UEFI?
Should it be setup like this?
Name Flags Part Type FS Type [Label] Size (MB)
sda1 Boot Primary Linux 15440 <-- FAT32 Filesystem for UEFI
    sda2 Primary Linux swap / Solaris 1024
    sda3 Primary Linux {rest of space}*
    or like this...?
Name Flags Part Type FS Type [Label] Size (MB)
    sda1 Boot Primary Linux 15440
sda2 Boot Primary Linux 512 <-- FAT32 Filesystem for UEFI
    sda3 Primary Linux swap / Solaris 1024
    sda4 Primary Linux {rest of space}*
Additionally, secondary question, from the Beginners Guide, it has the following line for installing GRUB..
    grub-install --target=x86_64-efi --efi-directory=/boot/efi --bootloader-id=arch_grub --recheck
For "--efi-directory=/boot/efi" is this something that I will need to create manually? I saw some forum posts where people needed to place something in their bootable usb drive, but I'm using a Live Disk. Thanks.
    Edit: Solved second question.
Last edited by Quill (2012-09-07 03:33:01)

After much research, I've found a lot more information on this. I'm going to take this approach I think..
    Setup partitions like:
Name Flags Part Type FS Type [Label] Size (MB)
    sda1 Boot Primary Linux 15440
    sda2 Primary Linux swap / Solaris 2048
    sda3 Primary Linux {rest of space}*
After setting up file systems.. Then do this..
    # mount /dev/sda1 /mnt
    # mkdir /mnt/boot/efi
    # mount /dev/sda1 /mnt/boot/efi
    When installing GRUB..
    # pacman -S grub-efi-x86_64
    # grub-install --target=x86_64-efi --efi-directory=/boot/efi --bootloader-id=arch_grub --recheck
    # grub-mkconfig -o /boot/grub/grub.cfg
Can someone confirm if that is the correct setup? Also, as it states I need to make it a FAT32 Filesystem, will this affect anything if I have my entire boot partition on FAT32?

  • [SOLVED] Unbootable fresh install

    Hello wonderful people !
First of all, I hope your day is going well. Mine isnt ...
I recently decided to ditch ubuntu and found that Arch followed a philosophy that really appealed to me. Therefore I decided to give it a try.
Unfortunately, my installation attempts so far only gave birth to :
    - Black screens with blinking cursors
    - "Reboot and select a proper Boot device"
    - Tears (mine)
I followed the beginner's guide each and everytime, tried both gummiboot and grub, as well as look through this forum and tried some of the suggestions.
For my 6th attempt, and out of a mixed feeling between despair and frustration, here's a live transcript of every command, so that you can maybe tell me where the error is :
efivar -l (outputs variables, not an error, so it shoud be good)
sgdisk -Z /dev/sda (wipe the disk as suggested here : https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=196733)
    parted /dev/sda
    --| mklabel gpt
    | mkpart ESP fat32 1MiB 513MiB
    | set 1 boot on
    | mkpart primary linux-swap 513MiB 4.5GiB
    | mkpart primary ext4 4.5GiB 100%
    --| quit
    mkfs.vfat -F32 /dev/sda1
    mkfs.ext4 /dev/sda3
    mkswap /dev/sda2
    swapon /dev/sda2
    mount /dev/sda3 /mnt
    mkdir -p /mnt/boot
    mount /dev/sda1 /mnt/boot
    pacstrap -i /mnt base base-devel

    ## I'll spare you the locale, keymaps, timezone, hostname ... settings. They're most likely irrelevant anyway. Let me know if you need them too.
mkinitcpio -p linux (It's mentionned that it's not mandatory, I've tried to do it or not, it doesn't seem to change anything)
    passwd
    pacman -S dosfstools efibootmgr
    pacman -S gummiboot
    gummiboot --path=/boot install
    nano /boot/loader/entries/arch.conf
    --| title Arch Linux
    | linux /vmlinuz-linux
    | initrd /initramfs-linux.img
    --| options root=/dev/sda3 rw
    nano /boot/loader/loader.conf
    --| default arch
    --| timeout 5
    exit
    umount -R /mnt
shutdown -p now (rather than reboot, so I can take my time to remove the usb drive and go back to the UEFI/bios and make sure the boot order is correct)
I never get any error along the process.
I willingly admit that this is still a bit new to me - I've always used distros that did most of this automatically or through graphical tools.
But i'm not completely lost either and this seems pretty solid to me.
In the UEFI/BIOS, I have 3 entries that match my SSD :
    - Linux Boot Manager
    - UEFI OS
    - P2 Samsung SSD 840 EVO 500GB
Secondary question : what's the difference between those three ? Given that they all pathetically fail at the moment, I can't really tell. =P
After this latest attempt, all three give me the "reboot and select proper boot device" error.
I hope you can help me find the problem. Let me know if there are other informations you need.
    Best regards.

    @jasonwryan, I did, yes.
    @Head_on_a_stick THAT WORKED. I LOVE YOU !
Is this mentionned anywhere in the wiki guides, have I missed it ? If not, it might be a reasonnable addition. I'm pretty sure I would have searched for days and not think of that.
I'll switch the subject to solved. Again, thanks a lot

/dev/sda1 used to be Windows 7 EFI partition. Gparted says it is flagged as boot.
What I did to install arch:
Partitioned /dev/sda5 with windows disk manager to create linux partitions and formatted the new partitions with gparted as the noob I am.
    created /dev/sda6 for EFI boot
    created /dev/sda9 for boot partition
    created /dev/sda10 as root.
    Did not touch
/dev/sda1 which was the EFI partition named SYSTEM
/dev/sda2 which was windows boot partition
    /dev/sda3 which was windows C:,
/dev/sda4 and /dev/sda7 which I don't know what they used to be (possible for Asus fast wake up or swap whatever)
    /dev/sda8 which is recovery partition.
I did not touch any grub files, except /etc/default/grub
    [sonay@zenbook ~]$ cat /etc/default/grub
    GRUB_DEFAULT=0
    GRUB_TIMEOUT=1
    GRUB_DISTRIBUTOR="Arch"

    SOLUTION:
first I needed to mount Windows EFI partition which was /dev/sda1, so :
    mount /dev/sda1 /mnt
Then issue the following commands and take note of the outputs:
    grub-probe --target=fs_uuid /mnt/EFI/Microsoft/Boot/bootmgfw.efi
    which outputs: 18DF-E58E and
    grub-probe --target=hints_string /mnt/EFI/Microsoft/Boot/bootmgfw.efi
    which outputs: --hint-bios=hd0,gpt1 --hint-efi=hd0,gpt1 --hint-baremetal=ahci0,gpt1
Finally edit the os-prober entry to the following in /boot/grub/grub.cfg
    menuentry 'Windows 7 (loader) (on /dev/sda3)' --class windows --class os $menuentry_id_option 'osprober-chain-5246C0D846C0BE4B' {
    insmod part_gpt
    insmod fat
    insmod search_fs_uuid
    insmod chain
    search --no-floppy --fs-uuid --set=root --hint-bios=hd0,gpt1 --hint-efi=hd0,gpt1 --hint-baremetal=ahci0,gpt1 18DF-E58E
    chainloader /EFI/Microsoft/Boot/bootmgfw.efi

    grub-probe --target=hints_string /boot/efi/EFI/Microsoft/Boot/bootmgfw.efi
    --hint-bios=hd0,gpt1 --hint-efi=hd0,gpt1 --hint-baremetal=ahci0,gpt1
Sorry, no need to anymore. Thanks anyways.
