[solved]ffmpeg x11grab fail (screencast/streaming)

So I decided to try and do some live streaming and quickly found a couple of not too complicated guides using ffmpeg, but I get an error and can't seem to find an explanation.
Command (one of many I've tried):
ffmpeg -f x11grab -s 1920x1080 -r 30 -i :0.0 -f alsa -ac 2 -i pulse -vcodec libx264 -vpre fast -s 1280x720 -acodec libmp3lame -ab 96k -vol 4096 -ar 22050 -threads 0 -f flv "rtmp://live.justin.tv/app/live_blablablablabla"
Output:

I've tried doing this in a multitude of ways, but the error is always the same:

Quite frankly I haven't got a clue, so please let me know if you've got an explanation.
So far the only idea I've been able to come up with is that the fact that I run openbox instead of gnome/kde, may have something to do with it. Possibly the proprietary nvidia drivers I'm using could have something to do with it as well I suppose, though I should think it rather odd.
Best regards.

Wow, a lot of help and I just now got a notice on my email. How is that? Is it only send out once a day or something?
Anyway, thanks a bunch. I figured out by my self that I didn't have pulseaudio, but whether I want it or need it... Well, I haven't got a clue. I did assume that I could do it without pulse, but I'm still somewhat confused. Worst case scenario I could probably just get pulseaudio up and running, but of course it's confusing as always, messing around with openbox.
The badmatch error do not imply that the resolution is wrong (at least in my case) and is sorted out by putting the params in the proper order. It's odd but it works.
Also thanks for the preset tip. I assumed it was something like that, but the manpages are confusing at best, at least for me, so thanks again.
An no,l do not want lossless video, but my resources are limited. I suppose I misinterpreted the the option.
So to wrap it all up, it will properly be a few days before I have time to mess around with this again, but I will return whether it goes well or not.
For those who may wish to offer further advise, here's a few pointers.
I'm running on a machine with an aging core2 duo (E7400), 4GB RAM, SSD, no swap and a somewhat limited upload (1-1.5 Mbit), so there are a few issues to consider.
Any advice will be very much appreciated, but for now I'll assume that I can at least get it to work, albeit maybe not great.
Also would it be wise to encode mp3 instead of aac and how would it be done?
Best regards.

  • [SOLVED: MAJOR PEBCAK] Mpd fails to stream (mp3) to icecast

    EDIT: Wow, that's possibly the most embarassing FAIL I've ever been involved in. In the unlikely event anyone else ever fails as hard though, I will post my solution. I copied over the mpd.conf.example again and re-did it to my needs without screwing with removing all sorts of commented stuff, and came to find it still wasn't working (even after updating mpd). Considering everyone else's stuff seemed to Just Work (TM), I started thinking something seriously stupid must be wrong. Previously, I was using exaile, which apparently didn't stream at my volume, it streamed at a constant (and would keep playing the wrong file even if I switched songs, etc). In order to test if my stream was working on exaile, I lowered the volume on Exaile and played the stream in, for example, Amarok. .... do you see where this is going? That's right.. to test mpd, I lowered the volume to muted levels locally and listened in to the stream on amarok. ..mpd was sending a muted stream. >_<.. turned up the volume a little, played the stream, and to my frustration and surprise the stream was playing off-sync so I could hear it. The last times I tried to do this, I must have clicked into the stream JUST in time to hear mpd go to mute. Which explains why I would occasionally hear second-long or so bits of audio which I thought were some kind of local buffer output amarok was picking up somewhere. I'm not sure why it never clicked until I started raking my brain for the dumbest possible solutions. -_-
    Sigh.
    *MASSIVE HEADDESK*
    Well, it works now. Hooray, anyway.
    Original post:
    I'm beat.. I can't seem to make mpd stream any of my mp3s (or for that matter ogg's, but I only tested 1, which i converted) to my icecast server. Exaile+icast-plugin successfully streams to the server with identical settings afaict, and plays as expected. However, mpd seems to send the song information and an *empty stream*. Zero sound. Mpd on my end otherwise works fine, but the stream fails. I've tried every bloody option I can think of..
    Any ideas? Did I do something dumb somewhere?..
    No errors in the logs i can see.. current ver of mpd, nor the *.14.* old version, nor git version seem to work.
    Edit: Well.. in the icecast error log, I see a bunch of
    [ WARN stats/stats_event_conv No charset found for "ISO8859-1" ]
    errors.. however, that locale already exists on the system. running locale-gen didn't change anything.. and I doubt the relevance.. but I might as well mention it. EDIT2: to be sure, i ran locale -a on the server.. sure enough, it returns en_US, en_US.iso88591, en_US.utf8 plus other stuff. Same goes for local machine..
    login/user information edited out accordingly..

  • [Solved] Bluetooth + Jaybird Bluebuds X - Stream setup failed

    Using blueman-applet to control bluetooth devides via Bluez4, i get the following:
    Connection Failed: Stream setup failed
    I've paired the device, that was successful.
    I've added it as a trusted device.
    Also made some minor config changes here and there, for instance:
    # /etc/bluetooth/audio.conf
    Enable=Socket
    I've installed pulseaudio and ran the following:
    $ pulseaudio --start
    $ pactl load-module module-bluetooth-discover
    Still doesn't work even thoe the device can be found:
    Most guides/issues are reported under Ubuntu, and they solve it by installing pulseaudio-module-bluetooth, however this module comes default with pulseaudio in Arch from what i can tell.

    Also for anyone finding this on google and wonders how to switch to the bluetooth?
    # nano /etc/asound.conf
    defaults.ctl.card 1
    defaults.pcm.card 1
    pcm.btheadset {
    type plug
    slave {
    pcm {
    type bluetooth
    device 44:5E:F3:A6:E7:43
    profile "auto"
    hint {
    show on
    description "BT Headset"
    ctl.btheadset {
    type bluetooth
    (Where everything except the two first lines are added in my case)
    And then we enable this sink in pulseaudio.
    $ pactl load-module module-alsa-sink device=btheadset
    Then we simply use pavucontrol and enable this output either "globally" or for a particular audio-stream.
    Using pulseaudio+alsa

  • [Solved] ffmpeg and x11grab - can't grab entire xorg/winmngr screen?

    Hi.
    Got a Xorg running with OpenBox and I'd like to record the entire screen area,
    for this I'm using the following:
    ffmpeg -v 1 -f x11grab -r 30 -i :0.0 -f alsa -i hw:0,0 -acodec flac -vcodec libx264 -s 1920x1080 -crf 0 test.mkv
    YouTube clip describing it better then I can in words
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=11vA8BnYvzY
    This gives me about ~400x400 resolution which has been stretched to a 1920x1080 resolution, most likely because X runs at ~400x400 while the window manager is actually running at the full resolution.
    Any ideas on how to fix this?
    I've been fippling around with the settings for a bit but nothing seems to be working, this is my xorg conf:

    SubSection "Display"
    Depth 24

    Also, xrandr shows:

    You simply needed to move "-s 1920x1080" as in input option. Otherwise, as in your first post, the default size for x11grab is 640x480 and you're resizing it to 1920x1080.
    "-preset veryslow" is a libx264 option and is ignored by huffyuv.
    "-qscale 1" is an output option, but you're attempting to apply it to the input which does not make sense. Also, huffyuv ignores qscale, since it is a lossless encoder, so you don't need it for an output option either.

    Why are you re-encoding instead of simply re-muxing? Using stream copy mode:
    ffmpeg -i out.mp4 -ss 4 -t 10 -codec copy out2.mp4

  • [Solved] Ncmpcpp Visualizer Failed To Load (Blank)

    Nevermind..got it working after configured that I have to put this line in .ncmpcpp/config:
    visualizer_look = "+|"
    Anybody have a better look for the visualizer?
    I also have tried several figures like "=="..hmm..kinda like it..

  • [SOLVED] FFMPEG appears to be trashing bash script variables

    Hi,
    I have a directory containg MP4 files which were downloaded via youtube-dl upon which I want to extract audio using FFMPEG.
    I am using the usual find/while/read/do/done loop to process each file individually. The files were downloaded using Youtube-dl (invoked with --restrict-filenames) so the youtube video ID is recorded within the filename which can then be used to obtain the video title (ie to tag the audio with once extracted, ie ID3).
    Without FFMPEG the loop works as expected as can be seen when using echo, but as soon as I introduce FFMPEG into the loop, no such file or directory errors are reported because the filenames passed to FFMPEG are nonsense and appear to have been trashed, for instance, characters are stripped from the start or end of the filename.
    find . -name '*.mp4' | while read FILE
    do
    FNAME=${FILE%.mp4}
    FID=${FNAME: -11}
    FTITLE=${FNAME%-$FID}
    TITLE=$(youtube-dl --get-title $FID)
    # MP3="${FNAME}.mp3"
    AAC="${FNAME}.aac"
    ffmpeg -i $FILE -vn -acodec copy $AAC

  • [SOLVED] FFMPEG Using Only 1 Thread

    Greetings,
    I am having a problem that is killing me. I am using ffmpeg-svn from aur, with "-threads 8" on a core i7 and ffmpeg is only using 1 thread. It doesn't matter if I use ffmpeg from extra or "-threads 0". The commands I am using are:
    ffmpeg -y -i movie.h264 -pass 1 -vcodec libx264 -vpre fast_firstpass -b 8192k -bt 1024k -threads 8 -r 24000/1001 -f rawvideo -an -ss 00:30:00 -vframes 2000 /dev/null
    ffmpeg -y -i movie.h264 -pass 2 -vcodec libx264 -vpre fast -b 8192k -bt 1024k -threads 8 -r 24000/1001 -an -ss 00:30:00 -vframes 2000 movie.mp4
    ffmpeg version:
    FFmpeg version SVN-r24856, Copyright (c) 2000-2010 the FFmpeg developers
    built on Aug 20 2010 21:41:07 with gcc 4.5.1
    configuration: --prefix=/usr --enable-gpl --enable-version3 --enable-libmp3lame --enable-libx264 --enable-libopencore-amrnb --enable-libopencore-amrwb --enable-libtheora --enable-postproc --enable-shared --enable-pthreads --enable-x11grab --enable-libvpx --enable-libvorbis --arch=x86_64
    libavutil 50.24. 0 / 50.24. 0
    libavcore 0. 6. 0 / 0. 6. 0
    libavcodec 52.85. 1 / 52.85. 1
    libavformat 52.78. 3 / 52.78. 3
    libavdevice 52. 2. 1 / 52. 2. 1
    libavfilter 1.37. 0 / 1.37. 0
    libswscale 0.11. 0 / 0.11. 0
    libpostproc 51. 2. 0 / 51. 2. 0
    Where movie.h264 is a raw stream demuxed from a bluray m2ts file. Transcoding HD video with one thread is unbearable. Has anyone else ever had this problem?

    Maybe the package in extra also needs updating, maybe you don't need to explicitly tell ffmpeg how many threads to use and it gets confused.

  • [SOLVED] apache daemon fails to start on boot, but rc.d restart works?

    I installed apache from the official repos and followed the instructions in the wiki for configuring it. I checked to make sure the http user exists, and I /etc/hosts looks good (to me). Upon boot, the daemon fails to start and I can't load local web pages, but running "rc.d restart httpd" works just fine. Since I'd rather not start it manually every time I boot, is there a way to fix this? Also, httpd is the last daemon in my DAEMONS array.
    /etc/httpd/conf/httpd.conf:
    # This is the main Apache HTTP server configuration file. It contains the
    # configuration directives that give the server its instructions.
    # See <URL:http://httpd.apache.org/docs/2.2> for detailed information.
    # In particular, see
    # <URL:http://httpd.apache.org/docs/2.2/mod/directives.html>
    # for a discussion of each configuration directive.
    # Do NOT simply read the instructions in here without understanding
    # what they do. They're here only as hints or reminders. If you are unsure
    # consult the online docs. You have been warned.
    # Configuration and logfile names: If the filenames you specify for many
    # of the server's control files begin with "/" (or "drive:/" for Win32), the
    # server will use that explicit path. If the filenames do *not* begin
    # with "/", the value of ServerRoot is prepended -- so "/var/log/httpd/foo_log"
    # with ServerRoot set to "/etc/httpd" will be interpreted by the
    # server as "/etc/httpd//var/log/httpd/foo_log".
    # ServerRoot: The top of the directory tree under which the server's
    # configuration, error, and log files are kept.
    # Do not add a slash at the end of the directory path. If you point
    # ServerRoot at a non-local disk, be sure to point the LockFile directive
    # at a local disk. If you wish to share the same ServerRoot for multiple
    # httpd daemons, you will need to change at least LockFile and PidFile.
    ServerRoot "/etc/httpd"
    # Listen: Allows you to bind Apache to specific IP addresses and/or
    # ports, instead of the default. See also the <VirtualHost>

    # Change this to Listen on specific IP addresses as shown below to
    # prevent Apache from glomming onto all bound IP addresses.

    Per the wiki, I also tried commenting out the line that reads
    LoadModule unique_id_module modules/mod_unique_id.so
    Either way, it still fails on boot.

    The SIGTERM are from reboots, yes. I'm not absolutely sure that the process isn't running; I just know that I can't access http://localhost immediately upon reboot. I have to restart the httpd daemon, which works fine. How would I be able to tell if it's just hung?
    I checked everything.log, and I don't see anything that leaps off the page to me.

    All I notice is that my system's time is having a few problems, since you'll notice that events occur at 22:00 and change, then 17:00 and change, then back to 22:00 and change afterwards. Could this be the problem? I've had the CMOS batteries peg out on me suddenly in the last few weeks. I would hope this sytem is not also suffering a similar fate. Nothing else was happening on my system except for the standard processes from /etc/rc.conf and other standard ones, since I've just been rebooting, checking the logs, then posting here.

  • [SOLVED] Bumblebee problems (Failed to assign any connected ...)

    Hello everybody.
    I'm having this exact issue: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Bu … X_screen_0.
    Unfortunately, the provided solution does not help in my case.
    I'm pretty much out of ideas now, so I'll post the configs and output of what I've got so far and hope for the best.

    I'm new to installing Arch so please take into consideration the possibility of outrageously stupid things I might have done to cause this mayhem.

    I have actually had a success message among one of the  error messages, which was:
    Can't open display(null)
    And meant that everything is in order but I just did not have X started.
    I interpreted that incorrectly and tried to further fiddle with display configuration.
    Marking as Solved.

  • How to solve the issue: "Failed to install NtCreateSection monitor" etc

    I am a user of VM VirtualBox Manager
    I have been searching for the solution for the above issue.
    But I got nothing until now 22nd August 2014.
    But after several trying several settings, I succeeded to start VM VirtualBox Manager without getting "Failed to install NtCreateSection monitor"
    So I just want to share with others, and perhaps what I did above can solve the issue for others with similar problems
    Here it is:
    1. Try to change the display resolution to AUTOMATIC
    2. and / or try to disable the extension packs
    As for me, I only did no.1 only.
    And also when I did that, I was still disabling my avast.
    (Here I'm trying to give a solution of an issue, without following other's thread.)
    Actually for me this was an idea, and thx to BluShadow, I know this thread belongs here as a discussion topic.

    I received the above msgs just now (2nd time after yesterday as 1st time), and I could get rid of the error msg by doing the above steps once again.
    The important thing is to change the display to another option.
    eg. if your current display is "Automatic" then change it to "Hint" etc
    if your current display is "Hint" then change it to "Automatic" etc, then you can start the virtual machine / HDD again.
    Hope I can help you guys with the same problem.
    Thx,

  • [Solved] LXDE Install Fails Due To Disabled Key

    When I run:
    # pacman -S lxde
    I get this error:
    error: lxdm: key "Daniel Wallace <his email address>" is disabled
    Later I get this:
    error: failed to commit transaction (invalid or corrupted package)
    I'm assuming the second error is due to the first.
    I did some reading and the way I understand it is that I don't need to do anything for this specific key since all five of the master keys have signed it. Do I understand correctly?
    I've already done an update and I tried "pacman-key --refresh-keys" which did not help. Hopefully that wasn't a terrible idea. Also, I removed lxde from the cache and tried again with continued failure.
    *marked as solved and edited out an email address.

    Can I somehow copy the key database from one Arch system to another?
    EDIT:
    Ok, forget it.
    Finally the following command sequence worked but only after deleting/moving the directory /etc/pacman.d/gnupg as suggested by the wiki page of pacman-key:
    pacman-key --init
    pacman-key --populate
    pacman-key --refresh-keys

  • [SOLVED]nm-applet fails to launch after update

    Hi,
    I've just updated NetworkManager and network-manager-applet:
    [2012-10-31 20:16] upgraded networkmanager (0.9.6.0-2 -> 0.9.6.4-1)
    [2012-10-31 20:16] upgraded network-manager-applet (0.9.6.2-1 -> 0.9.6.4-1)
    After reboot nm-applet fails to launch with the following error:
    ** (nm-applet:6657): WARNING **: Could not initialize NMClient /org/freedesktop/NetworkManager: Rejected send message, 2 matched rules; type="method_call", sender=":1.48" (uid=1000 pid=6657 comm="nm-applet ") interface="org.freedesktop.DBus.Properties" member="GetAll" error name="(unset)" requested_reply="0" destination="org.freedesktop.NetworkManager" (uid=0 pid=267 comm="/usr/sbin/NetworkManager --no-daemon ")

    When using sudo nm-applet:
    ** Message: applet now removed from the notification area
    ** Message: applet now embedded in the notification area
    ** (nm-applet:6767): WARNING **: Failed to register as an agent: (32) Session not found
    Any idea on what went wrong after the update?
    Thank you in advance!
    EDIT:
    While migrating to systemd, I forgot to replace the ConsoleKit line in /etc/pam.d/slim with:
    session required pam_systemd.so
