[SOLVED] Firefox messes up ligatures when displaying Calibri font

Hi,
This problem has been bothering me for a while and I can't figure out what's wrong.
To ilustrate this, here are a few quotes from Coding Horror, one affected site:
It's difficult to fix without making major changes to the web's infrastructure.
For example, I just noticed that Twitter, transparently to me and presumably all other Twitter users [...]
[...] such as swiping left or right with four fingers to switch between apps.
In bold are the charecters that stand out (and I mean it) when reding the text. I dare not post a screenshot, for I believe this may kill your soul as it has been slowly killing mine.
So far, Calibri is the only font that I found that shows this behaviour, and it's not in all programs. Some affected programs are Firefox and Thunderbird. In LibreOffice, for example, it shows normaly.
I do not remember having done any font configuration in my system, but I'm not sure where I should check...
Thanks for your help!

There are nice patches for freetype2 that can make fonts look much better (even those tricky ones, like Calibri). In order to do so, you may want to replace some of your packages:
* freetype2 with freetype2-infinality,
* fontconfig with fontconfig-infinality,
* libxft with libxft-cleartype,
* cairo with cairo-ubuntu.
They should significantly improve the rendering of your fonts. Of course, you can always check other versions of the packages in the AUR: I assume that the above combination should be safe in most cases, and the final result satisfactory for the user.
Edit 1: It's worth reading the Wiki article on font configuration to get the idea what and how can be tweaked.
Edit 2: And here comes a screenshot:

    It will input your Quicken PPC data file directly if it was Quicken 2005 through 2007.  If older you need Quicken 2006 or 2007 PPC first to convert your data file; and this update must be done BEFORE you upgrade to Mavericks:

  • How to solve Firefox keep accessing Program Files when I open it?

    When I open Firefox, instead of showing the homepage(which is google.com for me) it bring [file:///C:/Program%20Files%20%28x86%29/Mozilla%20Firefox/]. I don't want it to be this way but I don't know how to solve it.
    please help :D

    Open a new window or tab. In the address bar, type '''about:config'''.
    If a warning screen comes up, press the '''Be Careful''' button.
    This is where Firefox finds information it needs to run.
    At the top of the screen is a search bar. Enter '''browser.newtab.url'''
    and press enter. '''browser.newtab.url'''
    tells Firefox what to show when a new tab is opened.
    If you want, right click and select '''Modify'''. You can change the setting to;
    '''about:home''' (Firefox default home page),
    '''about:newtab''' (shows the sites most visited),
    '''about:blank''' (a blank page),
    or you can enter any '''web page''' or '''about: page''' you want.
    The same instructions are used for the new window setting, listed as
    '''browser.startup.homepage'''.

    The padlock icon shown when entering secure sites using Firefox 3.x is not displayed using Firefox 4.

    It has been changed. Please read this article:
    https://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Site%20Identity%20Button
    You can use this add-on to get the classic icon back:

  • Pages with auto update features such as live scoreboards won't autoupdate when displayed in Firefox.

    Pages with autoupdate features (e.g. live scoreboards) won't update when displayed in a Firefox tab. Firefox recently installed replacing IE as default browser, several add-ons installed (e.g. Flashblock, AdBlock Plus, CoolPreviews, Real Player Plugin, Shockwave Flash, US English Dictionary, Move Media Player, Adobe Acrobat Reader, WPF, Veetle TV, Silverlight) no other problems observed.
    == URL of affected sites ==
    http://scores.espn.go.com/mlb/scoreboard

    Hmm. Have you tried selectively disabling some of your extensions (e.g. Adblock Plus, Flashblock) to see if they were interfering with the autoupdate?
    If you start up Firefox in [[Safe mode]], you should be able to start Firefox with all extensions disabled. If that works, then you could try some detective work with activating extensions to see which one is the culprit.

    how to use a dictionary for multi languages when displaying messages??

    1st you have to define new messages in the dictionary:-
    1.     We have to open the application.

  • Display Calibration Issues

    hi,
    just upgraded to 10.6.8 and lots of issues.
    the biggest is that my 30" cinema display now looks 15-20% lighter.
    the screen image (especially in abobe indesign) doesn't look like it did in 10.5.8
    and looks lighter than my normal print output.
    I've played around with display calibration, but my new settings are really different
    from my original settings. and of course, now all my indesign files are out-of-sync
    with the abobe color settings and need to be updated, each and every one.
    I also read that the new 'target gamma' is now 2.2 for 10.6.8 (as a default), but
    when calibrating in SL, isn't not default and you need to know to manually change that.
    has anyone else experienced these kind of SL display problems?
    if so, how did you correct them?
    in the back of my mind I'm thinking it's something with the video card, but
    I'll try anything short of messing with that.
    bottom line: all was well in 10.5.8.
    now with 10.6.8, I've got issues that need to be fixed asap.
    jim

    my suspicion is snow leopard.
    Nope, color works just fine. Something has changed in your setup. If you're using the exact same monitor and printer profiles you had under 10.5.8, color should come out the same under Snow Leopard.
    While the default for Snow Leopard is now a 2.2 gamma, it doesn't mean you can't change it. It only means the long supplied Apple profiles are now built with a 2.2 gamma instead of 1.8. You can still build your monitor profiles to any white point and gamma you want.
    Color matching is actually much simpler than it sounds. Though I should say the concept is simple. ColorSync is what controls color between devices. If you're trying to match your print to the monitor, ColorSync reads the monitor profile's color space. It does the best it can to make it fit and translate to the printer profile's color space.
    That's the simple explanation. But in order for that to work, you need accurate profiles. You'll go through an awful lot of paper and ink trying one unrelated profile after another, and still get nowhere. By "unrelated", I mean using a profile that has nothing to do with the device. Such as choosing "Adobe RGB" as your monitor profile. That profile means nothing in relation to your monitor. It does not describe the white point, gamma or brightness you monitor is necessarily set to, nor the gamut or range of color it can actually display. Same goes for the rest of any profile the system allows you to choose as your monitor profile. They are all generic profiles that in no way describe the device you are looking at. I go into a lot more detail on monitors here.
    So when you do use one of those generic monitor profiles, ColorSync can only assume, yes, this must be exactly how the monitor looks that you're viewing. Which of course it doesn't. So naturally, printed color is rarely even close.
    The least expensive color management tool you can buy, and at the same time drastically improves your ability to match output to your screen is something like this. Of the two models, definitely get the i1Display Pro. Much faster, accurate unit. Also much better software with more control. Don't bother looking at older colorimeters such the i1Display2, Spyder, or any other previous models. They can't handle the output of today's wide gamut LCD or LED monitors. Gray rarely comes out gray. Usually very greenish or pink. These new models have bee completely redesigned to handle today's monitors. They also handle older monitors just fine.

  • How can I stop Firefox from loading automatically when I startup my computer?

    A while ago I setup Windows so Outlook and Firefox opened automatically when I log on. Now I want to stop FF from opening automatically. I have gone into the Startup folder and removed the shortcut to FF several times but it keeps coming back. I changed the name of Mozilla Firefox in the Windows Programs Directory to xxMozilla Firefox and that didn't keep it from loading. If necessary, I will remove FF from my computer altogether but I would rather not do that.

    Aaarg! I tried Matt's suggestion of using msconfig, restarted my computer, and it seemed to solve the problem. Today when I turned on the computer it hung up before loading Windows. I had to use the F12 button to get it to load. I did and it did and Firefox did not load.
    Now, this evening, I turned on the computer, the startup procedure was normal, and there's Firefox fired up and ready to go!

  • Firefox won't open when I click on the icon. I've tried uninstalling so that I can reinstall, but it says I have to close firefox (which isn't open), so I'm stuck.

    The problem: Firefox won't open when I click on the program.
    Solutions tried: #1) I tried to uninstall the program so that I can download it again, but the screen shows the message "firefox must be clsoed.. to proceed with installation". However, firefox is not open.
    #2) I tried to download firefox, thinking that possibly it would update and solve the problem. However, I get the same error message that "firefox must be clsoed.. to proceed with installation" Problem is that firefox is not open.
    I've done a screen shot, so you can see that I do not have the firefox browser open.

    Thanks for the reply. I tried repairing the permissions (as well as several other things like deleting the Finder preferences file), but no dice.
    Given that the problem cropped up right after updating OS X on two separate machines, it's looking to me like it's just a bug that needs squashing at this point.

  • Overriding DPI of images when displaying them in WPF

    Posting following because it might help someone else. It took me quite
    while to figure this one out.
    I started learning C# and WPF recently. I hadn't had so much fun since the
    late 1990s when I learned Java.
    But I stumbled on one major irritant working on my project, a picture viewer.
    Contrary to just about every environment I've encountered, WPF insists on
    taking the DPI of images into consideration when displaying them. What I want
    is to display the images in some area of my app, pixel-for-pixel unless that
    results in the picture going beyond the frame, in which case the image
    needs to be scaled down so it fits. I don't want to have a larger image because
    the DPI is smaller than 96, and I don't want a smaller image because the DPI
    is higher than 96.
    As far as I'm concerned, DPI is more often than not a useless number. Two
    examples.
    1) My camera arbitrarily assigns a DPI value of 72 to all pictures it takes.
       But what "inches" are we talking about here? Obviously there is no answer
       to that question. So it's a meaningless number.
    2) If I scan a 35 mm color slide, I will probably do so at a DPI value of
       something like 2400, but I'd sure want to display the resulting image much
       larger. By default, WPF will show it at original size, totally useless.
       The DPI here is certainly meaningful, but not as a display parameter!
    I compared two images from same original (leware.net/photo/dpi.html),
    one resized to a DPI of 48, the other to a DPI of 192. In a hex editor,
    except for the one byte that encodes the DPI value, the two files are
    identical. It's the same image, with a different DPI value, but no other
    differences.
    So how do I get a WPF picture viewer to display images without taking their
    DPI into consideration? As every browser and viewer I know will do?
    At first, I thought that I would be able to do something like:
        BitmapImage img = new BitmapImage();
        img.BeginInit();
            img.UriSource = new Uri(somePathOrUrl);
            img.DpiX = 96.0;   // override
            img.DpiY = 96.0;
        img.EndInit();
    But DpiX and DpiY are "get" only, not "set". Yet, it's just a simple number,
    and changing it before WPF does anything with the image does not sound like a
    big challenge (even when waiting for DownloadCompleted event). It's almost as
    if the WPF designers decided that WPI was sooo important that they would never
    allow anyone to modify the value...
    The first approach I tried used RenderTargetBitmap (created at 96 DPI),
    DrawingVisual, DrawingContext classes. Seems quite complex. It worked, but
    I wouldn't call it elegant.
    After much browsing (and with improving understanding), I found a better approach.
    In simple terms, I set the Image's Width and Height to PixelWidth and PixelHeight
    (which essentially makes the resulting DPI to be 96), and I set the Image's
    MaxWidth and MaxHeight to the space available to the Image in the app, to force
    scaling if the source is too large. I used Stretch=Uniform. Code fragments below.
    The Image is placed in a UniformGrid container which provides the MaxWidth and
    MaxHeight, and which centers the Image inside.
    This approach is quite a bit more elegant, it removed nearly 100 lines of code
    from the app. I still think though that it's not as simple as it could be.
    I had also read about "DPI awareness", didn't really understand it, but it seems
    to deal with DPI of display device, not of source images.
    So two questions:
    1) Is there a even easier way, esp. a way to directly modify or ignore an image's
       DPI values before using it (without copying the image into some new bitmap)?
    2) Barring that, is there something simpler than above?
    Note that I'm fine with the application being otherwise DPI aware (fonts,
    buttons, &c).
    Thanks
    WPF code fragments of the trivial application I used to fine-tune the second
    approach. The two images are 160x100 pixels (but any pair of images smaller
    than the display will do the trick), one at DPI 48, one at DPI 192, and named
    IMG_6726s48.jpg and IMG_6726s192.jpg. The both show at the same size, as I
    wanted.
    To see the original problem as I experienced it, set Stretch=None and comment
    out the two pairs of lines that set image.Width and image.Height.

            private void gridSizeChanges(object sender, SizeChangedEventArgs e)
                BitmapImage isrc = image.Source as BitmapImage;
                image.Width = isrc.PixelWidth;       // "ignores" DPI (redundant here
                image.Height = isrc.PixelHeight;
                image.MaxWidth = grid.ActualWidth;   // prevents scaling to larger than 1:1
                image.MaxHeight = grid.ActualHeight;

                    " image.ActualSize=" + image.ActualWidth + "x" + image.ActualHeight +

                    " image.Stretch->" + ((image.Stretch == Stretch.None) ? "None" : "Uniform");
            private void buttonClick(object sender, RoutedEventArgs e)
                Button b = sender as Button;
                string dpi = b.Content as string;
                changeImage(dpi);

    Being able to ignore DPI is all I'm asking for, and what I've always done for decades
    If the objective is to fill the Window, then yes, it's simple, as the following example of a thumbnail image shows:
    <Grid>
    <Image Source="http://leware.net/temper/42fp.jpg"/>
    </Grid>
    Result below. DPI doesn't matter, pixel sizes don't matter, the source fills the Image control, while respecting the proportions.
    But I don't want the image to fill the space available if it doesn't have enough pixels, it looks fuzzy and I don't like that.
    So I add Stretch=None to the Image control, and it solves my problem, the image is shown at a size that corresponds to its pixel size (63x87), centered.
    <Grid>
    <Image Source="http://leware.net/temper/42fp.jpg" Stretch="None"/>
    </Grid>
    The above two XAML fragments give the following results:
    The second is what I want. So Stretch=None, unless the image is larger than display area, in which case Stretch=Uniform.
    Now I try my two test images, also with Stretch=None because they are smaller than display area.
    These two images are both 160x100 pixels, and, when compared in a hex editor, differ
    only in the couple of bytes that store the DPI value (0x0030 vs 0x00c0),
    all the rest is the same.
    <Grid>
    <Image Source="http://leware.net/photo/IMG_6726s48.jpg" Stretch="None"/>
    </Grid>
    and
    <Grid>
    <Image Source="http://leware.net/photo/IMG_6726s192.jpg" Stretch="None"/>
    </Grid>
    Here's what I see:
    DPI obviously does matter here, much to my surprise. WPF's behavior was unexpected. That was my original problem.
    The DPI 48 image is enlarged by a factor of 2, the 192 DPI image is reduced by a factor of 2. What I want is in between, and the same for both images, a display based only on pixel sizes, like most browsers and picture viewers do.
    In other words, I want one image pixel to be one display pixel, downsized to fit if the image is too large, but never enlarged beyond 1:1 to fill the available space.
    I had a hard time figuring out how to get those two small images to show identically.
    I finally got what I wanted with the solution at the top of this thread (overriding size of Image control instead of DPI). I'm sharing because it might help someone else.
    Is there a better way to handle this when the DPI is arbitrary? Isn't there a way to just tell WPF to ignore images' DPI values or simply override it (force an image's DPI to 96)?
    Quite possibly I'm trying to do something which does not quite fit in the philosophy of WPF. Maybe I'm closer now, I'm still learning (this discussion is helping).
    I won't be surprised if my application misbehaves when the DPI of the display is not 96. Not a concern for now.

  • Firefox wont open webpage when linked from another program

    When linking from other programs, a new firefox window will open, but displaying a blank page instead of loading the page. I checked for firefox being the default web browser, but I cant figure out what other options may be important. It actually started happening when upgrading to Ubuntu Natty, did not happen when using ff 4.0.1 on maverick. Any Ideas? Thanks for the help.

    First and foremost, please update Firefox to '''3.6.17''' by clicking '''Help'''| '''Check For Updates'''.
    The reason for this is because there was a security breach at Comodo which is an SSL certificate provider recently whereby a number of fraudulent certificates were inadvertently issued. These allow a hacker to impersonate any site including online banking and the Firefox version you're running at the moment will not warn you that the site is a fake. The fraudulent certificates were blacklisted in v3.6.17 and beyond.<br><br>

  • Text in Calibri font not displaying in LibreOffice 4

    Hi,
    I have recently opened a document in LibreOffice Calc and noticed that the document is text-less, but the highlights, borders and images are present. However, I can see the text content at the editbar above when I click on the cells. All the text is in Calibri font. When I change the font to something else, the text content appears correctly.
    I then tested Calibri font in LibreOffice Writer and the outcome is the same: Calibri text content does not appear at all. I did a further test on other app like KWrite, however Calibri font can be displayed correctly. Tried disabling embedded bitmap in fontconfig also made no difference.
    I performed a full system update and also tried switching between freetype2 and freetype2-infinality and the result is the same: LibreOffice 4 cannot display Calibri text content. Appreciate if someone can help me with this issue. Thanks.
    My system (64-bit) has the following:
    - KDE 4.10.4
    - LibreOffice 4.0.4
    - freetype2-infinality
    - ttf-ms-win8
    Note: The Calibri font is obtained directly from my other Win8 installation. The issue affects all Calibri fonts, i.e. Light, Italics, Bold, etc.

    It is possible, but unlikely. Most other distros use an older version of LibreOffice, hence the lack of bug reports. It is more likely that it is a LibO bug, and as mentioned on the Arch bug tracker, you should look into filing it with the LibO devs
    There are coments in this topic which say that with the official build it works. I had to try for myself. So:
    - downloaded from libreoffice website the rpm tar gz
    - extracted the tgz
    - went into RPMS directory and run: for file in *.rpm; do rpmextract.sh $file; done
    - whent into opt/libreoffice4.0 and run program/soffice
    Opened the same document and surprise, now I see the Calibri letters (Calibri font had to be installed, of course).
    Now, quickly, run /usr/bin/soffice, open the same document and see.... nothing.
    So, to resume: the official build works, the Arch build does not.
    Again, why is the Arch bug closed and suggested to report to LibreOffice?
    Does not compute... Should I include pictures?

  • Firefox page images do not display only text and links

    New desktop (not this one) with windows 8.1 Pro, Firefox 29, Norton Internet security. When I go to many of the Firefox pages images do not display, only text and links. This is true for the "get add-ons" page. I can search for add-ons, but when I try to install one, the installation fails. Is there a security setting in windows or NIS that is blocking Firefox images and installations? The Firefox installation went smoothly without error. Other sites do not have this problem.

    Wow! I never would have thought of that! My time settings were incorrect when I set up the PC, and I thought I set them. I did have the day, date, and time set correctly. But I did not have AM/PM set right. So, I was off by 12 hours. I corrected it and, voila, all works well.
    I'm so happy now, because I can now get all the security extensions I've grown to love:
    - NoScript
    - Ghostery
    - Better Privacy
    - Adblock Plus
    You guys are great! Thank you so much for your help.

    Go to "Firefox"--> "Options" --> "Advanced"
    Then un-check "Use hardware acceleration when available"
    While not verified, I believe this problem is due to an SLI configuration where the focus is on monitor 1. (I.e acceleration is available, but only on monitor 1.)
