(solvéd) fixing permissions, can't use su/sudo

i made a mistake while partitioning my drive for the first time and accidentally gave my / partition 8GB of space. it got full, so I copied everything well with cp -a (and partimage to double check), reformatted, and moved everything back. i am certain i messed up something by accident here, but i chown'ed the permissions of everything to "sa:users" (normal acct). everything works fine except when logged in as a normal user, I can't use su or sudo. i can log in as root though.
when i run su, i get: "su: cannot set groups: operation not permitted"
i have googled this endlessly but nothing I see works. I can't start up X or anything as a normal user. root account does everything fine and normally, but I can't figure out for the life of me what to do to get su working.

What are the permissions on su? For your reference:

Try these in order testing your system after each to see if it's back to normal:
1. a. Resetting your Mac's PRAM and NVRAM
    b. Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)
2. Restart the computer in Safe Mode, then restart again, normally. If this doesn't help, then:
     Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the
     COMMAND and R keys until the Utilities menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the
     computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager
     screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
3. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu. Select Restart from the Apple menu.
     Reinstall the 10.9.2 update: OS X Mavericks 10.9.2 Update (Combo).
4. Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion, Mavericks: Reboot from the Recovery HD. Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion, Mavericks from the Utilities menu, and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.
Reinstall the 10.9.2 update: OS X Mavericks 10.9.2 Update (Combo).

[PROBLEM SOLVED] After last update, Can't use keyboard in Xorg

Apparently the last system upgrade installed "xf86-input-keyboard-1.3.2-1-i686" but I reverted back to "xf86-input-keyboard-1.3.1-1-i686" and everything is working again.
Lesson learned: put all xorg related packages to hold because my geforce2 mx440 won't need updates.
This is just frustrating. After doing a system upgrade (which upgraded xorg to version 1.5) I can't use the keyboard anymore. In fact, my screen would freeze also, as long as I was using the latest Xorg version. This machine's card is a geforce2 mx440.
So I downgraded xorg-server with pacman -Rd xorg-server and pacman -U /var/cache/pacman/pkg/xorg-server-yadayada1.4yadayada; Fine, I can use the mouse and open X just as normal as before. BUT the keyboard seems helpless.

No Idea about your problem after downgrading (expect just as a guess, there is some problem with xbinkeys when it is autostarted with the window manager -- http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=65468).

[Solved] Hybrid graphics. Can't use the dedicated card

Hey. I've just installed Arch on a laptop that's got 2 AMD cards. 6520G and 7xxx.
I'm trying to disable the dedicated one, but I don't really know how.
Running xrandr --listproviders only shows one of the cards:

I'm still wondering why it was using the internal one by default..

Edit3: Tried with Prime too. It's still running on the IGP.
The thing is: one card is r600 driven, and the other, radeonsi. The X does restart after running Prime, but still.

If you want to keep it from using the IGD entirely, you can blacklist the module with a conf file in your /etc/modprobe.d folder. Like so:
/etc/modprobe.d/no_igd.conf
blacklist r600
Note that this will prevent vga_switcheroo from seeing the card at all. Vga_switcheroo requires ALL modules to be loaded for graphic devices in order to switch between them.
The other route is to create a customized device entry in your /etc/X11/xorg.d folder to specifically set your graphics device using the module you want. I don't have a code example of this handy at the moment, but you can look around and are sure to find one.

Yes, someone stole my original apple id in 2009. Now i bought another iphone in late 2012 , Created another apple id due to Apple not being able to help me access my original apple id. Which now since 2 months ago someone or company, or bank stole my second apple id. My iphone 4s with Sprint has no celluar connection supossedly due to no internet that is what sprint said but I looked it up on apple and it stated that there is a cellluar block on my iphone4s.
So I guess I will have to go in person to Sprint so they can explain that to me and why I was lied to on the phone earlier. Back to my 2nd stolen apple id that I registered my macbook,airport express router, and iphone4s and apple TV. So who ever stole this apple id obviously took over all my mac products I had registered to it. Enough about that back to trying to use time machine....Everytime i do, my macbook just starts acting all screwed up. I bought a WD external drive for Mac but I believe someone must have claimed it too. Since there is 75gb on it that I can't access. Kind of like my Macbook stating I can't save or have access to the Root . That is another thing after reinstalling snow lepoard which works great until I update it. Which is a problem because everytime I update it to 10.6.8 All the permissions are changed the graphics look horrible and I get redirected so bad its not funny. The email account is a joke. Also I notice my stationary for email is in Spanish not sure why and on Iworks the document samples are also in spanish. Now I dont speak any other language except ENGLISH AND HAVE LIVED IN UNITEDSTATES MY ENTIRE LIFE. But my internet provider Fibrant which swears they are local shows it is in the UK also when i try to access my email for that account it states it is not safe , certificate is expired and someone might be trying to impersonate my server. Try to type the formula for resetting the password and nope it didn't work either.

According to several websites I've read, Chicalogic looks sketchy at best, illegitimate and spyware at best.

Registry cleaners have very little good use, and usually end up damaging more computers than they fix. I'd recommend uninstalling the software.
That being said, Try to start Firefox in [[Safe mode|Safe mode]]. This mode disables all extensions, user customizations, hardware acceleration, etc. temporarily for diagnostic and troubleshooting. If Firefox works find in Safe Mode, then this is likely an add-on issue. Restart Firefox in normal mode, then type "About:addons" (without the quotes) in the address bar. Disable your extensions one by one, restarting Firefox between each one, until you find the trouble maker. Once you do, you can disable that add-on and report the issue to that add-on's developer.
A few other basic trouble shooting things you can try is this:
Run all Windows Updates, install all needed service packs, etc.
Update your graphics driver (Firefox uses your graphics card for some rendering, and an out of date graphics card driver can cause problems. [https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/how-do-i-upgrade-my-graphics-drivers https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/how-do-i-upgrade-my-graphics-drivers].

Download and Install MalwareBytes Anti-Malware, run a full Scan. [http://www.malwarebytes.org/ http://www.malwarebytes.org/]. This helps check that there are no viruses on your computer causing issues. you can uninstall this program after you clean off any infections.

Software applications are usually installed in the Applications folder on the Macintosh HD and are accessible to all users.
I would advise you to check the Applications folder and see if your software is in there.
Next step would be to Control Click or Right Click on the application and choose "Get Info" and make sure the permissions are set to "Read & Write" for all users. The article below provides more details:

So far this week when using firefox I can't use links or buttons within a website, I had to open IE to even get to this support page, how do I fix this?

When using Firefox I can goto websites but I can't use the buttons or links with in it. I have to use a different browser to delete email or get to my dvd list, ect.

the cd that came with the MacBook, how can I use it to fix problems with the OS, but not deleting the files that I have ?

You can boot up off of the CD and run Disk Repair including Repair Permissions or Verify Disk. Other than that, there aren't many choices From Apple for "fixing problems" from the CD as such.. unless you call reinstalling the OS "fixing problems".
Alternatively, if Safari is slow you can "reset Safari" from the Safari pull-down menu.
You can also download the 10.6.8 Snow Leopard Combo upgrade and reistall that from your desktop.
You can also let you rmachine run over night and let the S/L utilities run automatically at night.. no intervention on your part.
Genreally speaking there isn't really that much a user can actively do to "fix things".. however, suggest you keep all the software on your machine current. You can go to support and see all the 10.6.8 software updats availale. Be careful nto to download the "server" software for 10.6.8 though.

Just one SQL statement.Do not use PL/SQL block.

My itunes comes up with this when i try to download purchased songs: this devise is already associated with an apple id. this devise can be used with another apple id in 82 days. i need help to see if i can fix this problem please.

Sorry: once a device has been authorised for a particular iTunes account you can't change it to another until 90 days have passed. This is to prevent people cirumventing the restrictions of purchases to one account from consteantly swopping between accounts. You will have to wait for the 82 remaining days, and there is no workaround.

The first thing I would suggest is for you to go to the folder containing your catalog, using your system browser. There will be a folder that has the extension .lrdata. Delete that folder, and then try to start Lightroom. If that doesn't work, replace your catalog with your most recent backup.
