[SOLVED] foomatic-db-engine-3.0.1-1 upgrade fails
Hi
When i try to upgrade this package, i get this:
# pacman -Su
Targets: foomatic-db-engine-3.0.1-1
Proceed with upgrade? [Y/n] Y
checking package integrity... done.
loading package data... done.
checking for file conflicts...
error: the following file conflicts were found:
/usr/lib/perl5/site_perl/5.8.3/Foomatic/DB.pm: exists in filesystem
/usr/lib/perl5/site_perl/5.8.3/Foomatic/Defaults.pm: exists in filesystem
/usr/lib/perl5/site_perl/5.8.3/Foomatic/PPD.pm: exists in filesystem
/usr/lib/perl5/site_perl/5.8.3/Foomatic/UIElem.pm: exists in filesystem
/usr/lib/perl5/site_perl/5.8.3/i686-linux/auto/Foomatic/.packlist: exists in filesystem
So it conflicts with perl 5.8.3, i think...
But what should i do to get this installed properly.
JaH
you can force it with -Sf but i would file a bug first since it seems that it has not been built properly (for one .packlists are not needed and if the old foomatic owns those other files it should not conflict with the new foomatic files. find out which package owns those other files (and where that .packlist came from because it is really not needed)

[Solved]"foomatic-rip" for printer "Z22" not available
I found CUPS drivers for the lexmark Z22 here: http://www.linuxprinting.org/show_print … exmark-Z22 and I installed the printer successfully but I get this in the status field: "Paused: Filter "foomatic-rip" for printer "Z22" not available: No such file or directory". I checked AUR and there's no foomatic-rip package.

[SOLVED] foomatic-rip-hplip and HP laserjet M1212nf MFP printer
I'm trying to install and configure the drivers for the HP laserjet M1212nf MFP printer to work with CUPS over a wired network using the hplip utilities.
I've installed and set up the printer drivers etc using hp-setup and the printer is appearing in the CUPS interface. The problem is that when trying to print a test page
from the cups interface, I'm receiving the message "/usr/lib/cups/filter/foomatic-rip-hplip failed"
Has anyone had any experience with this error? what needs to be done to fix this? this is semi-important as I need my printer for work and school.
SOLVED: okay, so I found several solutions that combined seem to have solved my problems.
1.) remove the printer from cups
2.) instead of using 'hp-setup -i <printer-ip> just use hp-setup -i.
3.) have Hal, Dbus, and Avahi up and running (probably my biggest problem, I didn't have hal or avahi installed, and I didn't have dbus running)
4.) unpause printer
5.) pray
6.) print test page.
these steps worked for me (not necessarily in the above order...)

[SOLVED] gtk-qt-engine does not work
I basically no long use GNOME but I do use a few GTK apps such as Pidgin and Firefox (thats GTK right?). Anyways they look like total crap in KDE and I'd rather not start gnome-theme-manager everyday just to theme them right.
I installed gtk-qt-engine in the hopes that it would theme my GTK apps to look like my KDE theme ...
http://img164.imageshack.us/img164/1340 … 68sju0.png
As you can see there, I have it enabled (I think), but Pidgin in the background is not themed like it should be o_O.
Any ideas?
Thanks.
Last edited by A.I. BOT (2007-07-10 18:40:07)gtk-qt-engine is a bit broken, at least that is how it feels. A workaround for your problem is set in kde control center a gtk style for your gtk apps (same place where you tell to use gtk-qt-engine). After this, start a gtk application, it has a normal gtk style now. Close the gtk app, go back to control center and choose use qt theme for gtk apps at that place (dunno how it is exactly called, I'm not in kde atm). Now it should apply your qt theme to gtk apps.

[solved] Wifi and Video /Audio issues with Yosemite upgrade
Apple support recommend you call them to solve your issue as they want to report all instances to engineering. They solved my issue (for now)
Symptoms on Macbook Pro Retina 16GB 512GB SSD - late 2013 :
1. any online audio or video stutters when playing - Youtube, Vimeo etc
2. wifi cuts out - only reconnects if I turned off/on wifi
3. Bluetooth keyboard / magic mouse disconnects
Allegedly, during the update, something can happen with users accounts freezing. Therefore, a simple fix solves the issues:
1. Shut down your Mac.
2. Start Mac holding down SHIFT key (until desktop appears) - log in with your problem user account (Safe mode for those not familiar)
3. Open Safari and navigate to Youtube - I played a video - the sound was not available but does not matter.
4. Shut down Mac
5. Start Mac in normal mode
All should be fine now. If not call Apple support - that's what they suggestApple support recommend you call them to solve your issue as they want to report all instances to engineering. They solved my issue (for now)

[SOLVED] kwin crash when using OpenGL mode after upgrading to 4.7
I have a Ideapad Y460 (Graphic: ATi Mobility Radeon 5650). Recent days I upgrade my KDE from 4.7RC (4.6.95) to 4.7 (4.7.00) and also Catalyst from 11.6 to 11.7.
Update:
The problem has been solved. I used [kde-unsupported] source and kdebase-workspace package in that source contains OpenGL ES support while Catalyst doesn't support it. Thank @csslayer.
But when I use OpenGL mode, kwin crashed. I run
kwin --replace
to start kwin, then the Desktop Effect shows:
OpenGL compositing (the default) has crashed KWin in the past.
This was most likely due to a driver bug.
If you think that you have meanwhile upgraded to a stable driver,
you can reset this protection but be aware that this might result in an immediate crash!
Alternatively, you might want to use the XRender backend instead.
And there is a re-enable button. But the systemsettings window crashed when I pushed it.
I checked ~/.xsessiong-error and it shows this:
X Error: BadWindow (invalid Window parameter) 3
Major opcode: 20 (X_GetProperty)
Resource id: 0x1c0015a
I downgrade Catalyst but the problem still exists while KDE4.7 RC run well on my laptop. So I'm not sure whether it is caused by kwin or by Catalyst 11.7 or other packages.
Does anyone know the solution? Thanks for your patience.
Last edited by ukyoi (2011-08-01 08:34:20)I found an solution. Go to Settings/Mail, Contact, Calendar/Fetch new data and than enable Push and choose to fetch hourly or every 30 minutes. In this case your iPad will stay connected to wifi even when smart cover is closed. If you select Manualy than wifi connection will be terminated when in sleep mode.

Google search engine no longer works after upgrading to Firefox 11
I just upgraded to Firefox 11 earlier this evening. Now I'm trying to do a search with Google. I got the search results and clicked on what I wanted only to get taken to the Google home page with a new Google search engine entry box. There was a google sign-in thing but I shouldn't have to sign in just to do a search. I switched to yahoo search and got the info I wanted then switched back to google to try to figure out what on earth is going on. Now when I click on the item in the results that I want the tab at the top sort of blinks for an instant that says connecting then stops and stays on the results page. If I right-click on the item and select open in a new tab (or new page), I can go to that page, but I shouldn't have to always right click to go to a new tab or new page. It was never that way before I got to Firefox 11. Can this be fixed or do I have to just abandon google?
When you have a problem with one particular site, a good "first thing to try" is clearing your Firefox cache and deleting your saved cookies for the site.
1. Clear Firefox's Cache
orange Firefox button ''or'' Tools menu > Options > Advanced
On the Network mini-tab > Offline Storage : "Clear Now"
2. If needed, delete the site's cookies here
While viewing a page on the site, right-click and choose View Page Info > Security > "View Cookies"
Then try reloading the page. Does that help?
Also, I think the Ask toolbar (add-on) has been reported to create problems with the links in Google search results. You could try disabling it here:
orange Firefox button ''or'' Tools menu > Add-ons > Extensions
A search also turned up an issue with the HTTPS Everywhere add-on: [https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/867796 Google links redirect to Google homepage, not the link itself! | Firefox Support Forum | Firefox Help]. -
[Solved] White screen after KDE 4.11.1 upgrade
Hi!
I updated the system going from KDE 4.11.0 to KDE 4.11.1. On reboot I got the correct loading of KDM, but upon arrival on the desktop the latter is presented fully white with big red button with an "X" in them. Thinking it was the configuration of kde, I deleted .kde4 with the effect that the next time I always white screen (that is only the red buttons have disappeared).
I try to remove completely kde with:
pacman -Rsnc kde
and seeing that reinstalling I get the same result, I also tried to clean up the cache pacman packages listed by the command:
ls kde*4.11.1*
so I redownload and reinstalled with:
pacman -Syu kde
without solution. I also tried to do what is recommended in the wiki, that is in addition to eliminating .kde4, I run:
$ rm ~/.config/Trolltech.conf
$ kbuildsycoca4 --noincremental
without solution.
Thinking then it might be the partition / almost full, I checked with:
df
but the partition is not filled even for half of the 30gb that is available.
I checked some logs and these are the outputs:

Thanks Thaodan! I deleted /var/tmp/kdecache-$USER and I solve the problem! I also restore .kde4_backup and at the moment have no issue.
Small question: I noticed that there are also kdecache-kdm and kdecache-root. I should remove it or doesn't matter?
Thanks for the help!
THANKS, my White Screen was caused by a combination of issues but this solution worked for me.
My Problem -
I am not sure exactly what caused my white screen, I was playing around with /etc/profile & /etc/sudoers
What I changed -
sudoers - I added my user group to sudoers and allowed sudo to execute applications using xauth in home dir
profile - changed umask to 133 ( I hate execute bit ) and default text editor to nano
What Happened -
Tried to reload via source but no changes where taking effect so I rebooted.
Upon reboot I could not login to KDE, it would keep looping back to the KDM after I entered by password for my user, however it would let me login as root ( after I enabled root login ).
I figured this was a permission issue so I changed umask back to 022 in /etc/profile, I was then greeted with the White Screen after login. I read numerous posts about how to fix this, most said to reinstall kde and delete /tmp, none of this worked.
I deleted /var/tmp/kdecache-$USER and now I am back in business ( I had to re set the widgets, i.e. panel ).
I was so excited that I had to write a post about it!
Thanks again! -
[SOLVED] ATI (open source) Graphics Issue due to Upgrade
Shadowrun Returns finally loaded (after ages) but performance was abysmal whereas I was playing it with the same settings flawlessly yesterday. L4D2 was "laggy" while clicking in the interface and on the opening video, and then I got sound with a black screen and had to kill the process.
I believe it is related to a recent update in one of the following packages (at least I did not have this problem yesterday, and I updated first thing this morning):

Last edited by cyrxi (2014-05-06 15:03:55)I have similar problem. I have removed steam-runtime libstdc++ libraries (I could not start game with them), but performance is very low. I use open source ati drivers (lib32-ati-dri also installed) and have Radeon 7770. Some time ago I could play Super Meat Boy with good performance, but now even intro is like 5 FPS which is obviously now what I expected. I am rather casual player so I can't say when (after which update as I presume) performance were redused. System is up-to-date.
I noticed that if I use AccelMethod "EXA" hardware acceleration do not work, with "GLAMOR" I have artefacts (e.g. with title bar and context menu) in KDE, but it run at normal SMB at normal speed. According to Arch Wiki there is a bug in X11 related to GLAMOR.

[SOLVED] Updating libgcrypt to libgcrypt 1.6.0-1 fails
I was away from my machine for a while and did a system upgrade this morning. A lot of packages, like I'd expect and then halfway through I started getting messages about libgcrypt and invalid GPG engines. Anyway, long story short, my system is crippled due to everything being up to date except libgcrypt which is version 1.5.3-1 and pacman refuses to update it due to GPG errors (go figure).
The deets are as follows:
When I try and run a bunch of commands on my computer, I get a libgcrypt error such as this one:
# sudo halt
halt: error while loading shared libraries: libgcrypt.so.20: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory
When I try to (forcefully) upgrade libgcrypt, I get the following:
# sudo pacman -S --force libgcrypt 1
resolving dependencies...
looking for inter-conflicts...
Packages (1): libgcrypt-1.6.0-1
Total Installed Size: 1.09 MiB
Net Upgrade Size: 0.38 MiB
:: Proceed with installation? [Y/n]

Do you want to delete it? [Y/n]
error: failed to commit transaction (invalid or corrupted package (PGP signature))
Errors occurred, no packages were upgraded.
So, I'm not sure what's going on here, but it seems to me that libgcrypt needs to be upgraded for pacman to upgrade libgcrypt. Can someone please help?

Yes this works - though is this now also related to the kernel not booting after updating before libgcrypt was updated? Or is that a separate issue?
Should I be worried about booting my new kernel after the update?

ls -l /var/lib/pacman/local/filesystem-2011.08-1/

I checked another machine which also installed Arch Linux,
it's package number is filesystem-2011.04-1
ls -l /var/lib/pacman/local/filesystem-2011.04-1/

Should I just copy the " desc " and " files " to my computer, then run `pacman -Syu` again
or
Upgrade that machine's filesystem to 2011.08-1, then copy the files to my computer to fix it ?
( I am afraid of upgrade error again)

after searching on the web, I found that maybe an old harmless problem related to kernel ?
https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?pid=293179
also found an error in /var/log/daemon.log
Failed to activate service 'org.freedesktop.Avahi': timed out
there is already a post about it, but not having a conclusion yet
https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=124485
Every things seen to work fine now
After few more test and reboot, I would mark this post [solved]
Thanks to everyone for replying m(_ _)m
P.S.
There is still a problem when using virtualbox 4.1.2-1 after reboot, but I think that may not related to this post
If I try to upgrade kernel of the VM to 3.0.2-1 ( currently 3.0.1-1 ), will cause VirtualBox and my computer crash
generating some assert error, produce segfault when I tried to type any command in shell
unable to launch any program in X, but if I switch to tty*, I only got
INIT:Id "x" respawning too fast: disabled for 5 minutes
So I have to push the reset button to force reboot
after restore VM to previous snapshot, not having any problem so far -
[Solved] Some programs hang/don't work after upgrade
Hi all,
I searched and read things but couldn't find anything on this.
About a week ago I ran pacman -Syu and afterwards some programs stopped working the way they should.
The two I have had the most problems with are thunar and clementine.
Thunar takes ages to load, but when it does load it's fine. Clementine will load really quickly, but then hangs when I try to play a song. It usually never actually gets round to playing a song.
Other programs also hang when I try to save a document/file. I think it's something to do with programs that access my various storage devices.
When I run thunar from the terminal or try to play a song in clementine when run from the terminal, I get the following message:
Error calling StartServiceByName for org.gtk.Private.UDisks2VolumeMonitor: Timeout was reached (g-io-error-quark, 24)
Does anyone have any idea how I could fix this?
Thanks for reading

The other problems are whenever a program tries to load a file browser. So for example in lowriter when I save a document for the first time it hangs for about 30 seconds before showing me the little file browser it uses to select a location to save the document. This happens for any similar function by a program (e.g. extracting files using file-roller, saving in inkscape, "save as" in firefox). However these programs' other features all work fine.
My storage devices are an internal hard drive (home partition), another internal hard drive (just storage), an internal ssd (boot and root), an external usb hard drive (just data storage) and a samba share on a raspberry pi elsewhere in my house. boot, root, home and samba are all mounted in fstab. Looking at it now though, it seems the samba drive is not being mounted and the internal storage drive is not visible in thunar. I just ran "sudo mount -a" and it's sat there not visibly doing anything, been like that for a few minutes now.
The terminal output in the original post is the error message for both clementine and thunar. Only the program encountering the error hangs, the rest of the system works fine. Once thunar has loaded, it responds quickly and normally. When I open a terminal to access drives through the command line, nothing hangs at all, so it seems to only affect gui file browsing.
I hope that answers your questions and provides the information needed, thanks again for responding, I really appreciate the help
edit: I needed to access a file on the raspberry pi, obviously the samba was inaccessible via my main machine so I plugged the pi into a monitor to access the file directly - it was having a kernel panic. I powered off the pi, uncommented it from my fstab and now everything works fine (except my pi installation). I had no idea an error on a samba share on a different machine could have such an impact on my desktop. Marking this thread as solved.

removing xfwm4-tiling and xfwm4 --replace have fixed the issue
Thanks.

I have the same problem
I removed xfwm4-tiling and yes it appeared to fix the problem.
Just to make sure I rebooted and the problem is back.
Any other suggestions ?

jjacky wrote:Seems like you still have an old (4.8) xfwm4 or something, as with 4.10 it should now use libxfce4util.so.6
Check again which version of xfwm4 you have installed (e.g. xfwm4 -V; pacman -Qi xfwm4; etc), and make sure to upgrade to the latest.
well, i found that i had installed xfwm4-tiling 4.8.3-1 ... i removed that and i install xfwm4 4.10.0-1 and solved problem!!!
thanks for the help!!!
