[SOLVED] Fresh install, Two failures and hang

Solution: Needed to mount my boot partition (EF filesystem) to /boot/efi instead of /boot. Using rEFInd
Hi, so I've read the beginners guide inside and out and I'm having the most difficult time installing arch.
I've probably wiped it at least a dozen times and everything seems like it is going to start up and I get a few failures on startup which results in a hang afterwards
1)
[FAILED] Failed to start Create Volatile Files and Directories.
see 'systemctl status systemd-tmpfiles-setup.service' for details.
2) (this one cycles 6 times before hang)
[FAILED] Failed to start login service.
See 'systemctl statuse systemd-logind.service' for details.
x6
Then I get
[OK] Reached Target Multi-User System.
[OK] Reached target graphical interface.
then the hang where I can't do anything but hold down my power button.
I tried restarting the system with my liveCD (usb) and mounting up my directories and looking into the systemd files but they just say they load ok and there aren't any issues.
I've scoured google and really can't find anything to fix this issue. Any advice would be welcome for sure!
I know I can install Arch on this laptop because I was successful once. But then I wiped it to try out OpenSUSE, and since then I can't get passed these errors.
Thanks in advance!

The second one 0001 loads the boot screen but displays the error. My harddrive just displays a blinking cursor that doesn't do anything. Almost as though after the errors I get through the linux boot manager, it passes on to my hard drive and it can't do anything....
ran the create microsoft directory code and such. Rebooted. No change. I'm going to run the other debug things you mentioned.
Tried booting from UEFI shell. When I ran cd \EFI\arch I get "target directory not found" and \EFI\archlinux also gets target directory not found
OK it is not entirely clear what the boot process is doing here and it looks like the most likely problem is a gummiboot config error.  Your boot order in the efibootmgr command shows that entry 0001 is the first one that it will try which you have as "linux boot manager" - which presumably will find the gummiboot entry but perhaps it is not configured correctly.  Certainly you don't have any \EFI\arch or \EFI\archlinux directories since you previously quoted the contents of the /boot/EFI/ directory using the ls -l command. in \EFI\ there are only a Boot and a Gummiboot directory.
I am not clear why you had to run the command that created the boot entries twice but presumably the entry at boot0000 is likely invalid from the first attempt. You can use the efibootmgr command to delete nvram entries as well as recreate them.  I expect it might be a good idea to delete entry 0000, and maybe also 0001 and then create a new entry yourself using the efibootmgr command.
When you say that entry 0001 "loads the boot screen" - do you mean that it does successfully start the gummiboot bootloader but that gummiboot then fails to load the kernel? If so then that would suggest that the problem lies with the gummiboot configuration files, but that the uefi boot process does start correctly and loads gummiboot.  If that is the case then I would probably delete the nvram entry 0000 and then make sure that the default order was showing that the first entry that will be tried will be gummiboot (which seems to have its entry as "linux boot manager".  I don't use gummiboot myself so I don't have knowledge of what its boot screen looks like.
You can use the efibootmgr command to write a new entry similar to :
efibootmgr -c -d /dev/sdX -p Y -l /EFI/Gummiboot/gummiboot.efi -L "Gummiboot"
where sdX is the drive you have for ESP, and Y is the partition number. So in your case sdX is sda and Y is 3 if your partitions are as you reported previously. Using this command will then give an entry in the nvram called Gummiboot rather than "linux boot manager".  For the meaning of the parameters see the output of the command "man efibootmgr".
Check the man command for efibootmgr to see how to remove and reorder the boot entries in nvram. Make sure that the entries and boot order are sane before trying to reboot. Also make sure you only delete the entries that you created and not the ones that will boot to the usbkey or the CD.
If this does start Gummiboot correctly then you need to diagnose why gummiboot is not loading the arch kernel correctly. You can follow the wiki page at https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Gummiboot and set up a manual entry to load the arch kernel as the file /boot/loader/entries/arch.conf containing:
title Arch Linux
linux /vmlinuz-linux
initrd /initramfs-linux.img
options root=PARTUUID=14420948-2cea-4de7-b042-40f67c618660 rw
Here the PARTUUID value to the right of the = sign is the value relating to your root partition which is in your case the output of
blkid -s PARTUUID -o value /dev/sda1
Perhaps this will help pinpoint where the problem lies.  Certainly it is looking increasingly like your gummiboot config files are where the boot fails.
If you did want to try to launch your arch kernel from the uefi shell then boot to uefi shell v2 as you seem to have tried before. In your case you will need to tell the uefi shell where the kernel and initrd files are so presuming that your files system is defined as fs0 then from the shell in your case it would then be:
> fs0:
> cd \EFI\
> vmlinuz-linux root=PARTUUID=14420948-2cea-4de7-b042-40f67c618660 rootfstype=ext4 add_efi_memmap initrd=EFI/initramfs-linux-img
Since the kernel and initrd files in your case are named  vmlinuz-linux and initramfs-linux-img respectively.  Again the numerical value of the PARTUUID is as before the output of the blkid I quoted before.
You only need to change directory to \EFI\ since your kernel and initrd are in /boot in your case.  All of these commands have to be carefully adapted to your specific case and can't just be cut and pasted from the wiki entry which only has sample commands in many cases.
I hope this helps.

  • Fresh install of 10.5 hangs at boot after 10.5.8 update

    I'm troubleshooting a MacBook that hangs at start-up after installation of the 10.5.8 complete update. I've run Disk Utility (no errors), fsck (fixed a single error), and repair permissions (oddly, repaired a few on this fresh install). I've booted into verbose mode, and it appears that there's an infinite loop of:
    localhost DirectoryService[#]: Launced version 5.8.1 (v514.28)
    localhost ReportCrash[#]: Saved crashreport to /Library/Logs/CrashReporter/DirectoryService. . . .(it goes on, but it's just date info).
    Again, this is a fresh installation of 10.5. The only programs that have been updated are those updated through Apple Update. I did have problems installing the 10.5.8 update through the Update utility because "the package contents could not be verified," but the update installed fine after I downloaded it from Apple's site.
    Any ideas?

  • Safest way to go after a fresh install of iTunes and Windows

    I had to wipe my PC, and my XML file got corrupted and the itl file lost. I went to sync just before I wiped it and got, the message about being able to sync to one library at a time.
    As I'm starting from zero again will the iPod recognise the new library as "fresh" and I'll have to wipe the iPod of all the tracks on it?. Which isn't really a problem, as they're all backed up on my external HD.
    Or can I put all my music back into iTunes with ratings, and hope the iPod accepts the fresh install?
    Which is the best way to go? Empty iTunes and wipe the iPod and start from scratch? Or try and hope it recognises the new install?

    These links will give you several methods of recovering whatever songs remain on your iPod; some free, some third-party software, some more comprehensive for restoring Playlists, Ratings, Play Counts, etc. Read them and their associated links before deciding on a strategy that works for you. There are many various third-party software programs that will offer a more robust process, or an easier GUI. Do a Google search for them if the links below leave you wanting…
    Don King Resurrected: Deleted files from hard drive (free user steps – music recovery only)
    MacMuse: Computer Crashed (free user steps – music recovery only)
    Copying music from iPod to computer (a primer on various methods and software)
    Copying Songs from Your iPod to a Mac or PC (resource for 3rd party software)
    iPodRip Software (Free trial: Mac & Windows)
    PodUtil Software (Mac & Windows)
    YamiPod Software (Free: Mac & Windows)
    PodPlus Software (Windows)
    TuneJack Software (Windows)
    XPlay (Windows software For Music Recovery &/or Cross-Platform Functionality)
    XPlay Photo Browser (For recovering Photos)
    After recovering your Library, strongly consider developing a thorough and frequent backup strategy for just this type of situation (and many other potential disasters).
    You need at least two full sets of your music, not including what is on the iPod:
    a) One full set on the PC within iTunes (on internal HD or ExHD)
    b) One full set on an separate external backup medium (CD/DVD/ExHD/other)
    c) One (full or partial) set on the iPod
    Music files on just the iPod and only one other medium is not considered having any backup.
    If you cannot store your complete music files on the computer’s internal HD, then create and maintain at least two external sets (any multiple combinations of ExHDs, DVDs, CDs).
    Backup both the music files and the Library database file (iTunes Library.itl). What are the iTunes Library files?
    Here is a post on developing a thorough Backup Strategy

  • [SOLVED] Pacman won't update and hangs

    Hey,
    After logging in a while ago I found out that pacman hangs in a very weird way.
    Don't mind the czech locale, the output should be pretty clear anyway.
    [root@meph-ntb meph]# pacman -Syy
    :: Synchronizuje se databáze balíčků...
    core 55,0K 4,2M/s 00:00:00 [############################################################] 100%

    multilib 26,7K 2,8M/s 00:00:00 [############################################################] 100%
    [root@meph-ntb meph]#
    Seems alright. But then...
    [root@meph-ntb meph]# pacman -Syy
    :: Synchronizuje se databáze balíčků...
    And hangs here. Every other attempt at -Syy hangs like this, until next reboot. And after the reboot it again seems alright at first, but 2nd and every other attempt hangs.
    Pacman -Syu behaves in a similar way. First time after reboot it does sync the database and then hangs when it says retrieving packages. When I try again, it hangs on database sync.
    Tried changing mirror (long shot, I know), didn't help. Even tried without X running, didn't work. Also pacman.log is clear.
    Any ideas?

    I don't know why, but the problem seems to be gone after a few hours. I didn't change mirrorlist, and it hasn't changed since last time the update worked fine either. I'm still curious what caused the problem, but can't think of a way to find out.

    I can't see anything suspicious (except that I still need to set up Reflector, but that's another issue, it's a fresh install). Anyway, sorry for the false alarm.

  • [SOLVED] Fresh install read only file system

    I just did a fresh install of Arch this morning, and I have been trying to fix it most of the day. I was following the Beginner's Guide in the wiki as close as I could. (There were a couple items that didn't quite match up.) I only edited the files that it told me to, and then just minor edits. I checked out /etc/fstab during the process and noticed that none of my hard drives were present. I didn't think this was normal, so I opened another terminal and grabbed the UUIDs with ls -l /dev/disk/by-uuid/. I have two hard drives, but only sda1 (/) and sda2 (swap) showed up. (sdb1 is the entire second hard drive as /home.) Here is the default fstab:
    # /etc/fstab: static file system information
    # <file system> <dir> <type> <options> <dump> <pass>
    none /dev/pts devpts defaults 0 0
    none /dev/shm tmpfs defaults 0 0
    /dev/cdrom /media/cd auto ro,user,noauto,unhide 0 0
    /dev/dvd /media/dvd auto ro,user,noauto,unhide 0 0
    /dev/fd0 /media/fl auto user,noauto 0 0
    The example documentation indicated that the file should have lines similair to...
    /dev/disk/by-uuid/6334340b-87f1-406e-a777-13210ba85887 / ext3 defaults,noatime,nodirtime 0 1
    /dev/disk/by-uuid/5ffd6a40-6d72-4710-82af-ae894e557f89 swap swap defaults 0 0
    /dev/disk/by-uuid/32935c6c-6b75-4039-6b69-21f8b805e8f8 /home ext3 defaults,noatime,nodirtime 0 2
    ...but then I found an example while searching around that showed the lines like this:
    UUID=6334340b-87f1-406e-a777-13210ba85887 / ext3 defaults,noatime,nodirtime 0 1
    UUID=5ffd6a40-6d72-4710-82af-ae894e557f89 swap swap defaults 0 0
    UUID=32935c6c-6b75-4039-6b69-21f8b805e8f8 /home ext3 defaults,noatime,nodirtime 0 2
    In the first scenario, everything boots like normal, but when I tried to do anything that required writing to disk, the operation failed with a message about the file system being read-only. (I was trying to edit some config files because I couldn't get online.) Mind you, I was working as root the whole time, because I hadn't even gotten to adding a user yet. The only way I could make changes was to boot a live cd, mount, edit, reboot. remember to remove the live cd, reboot again, repeat.
    In the second version of fstab, the bootup process kept trying to check the disk for errors. When it was done it wanted to reboot. Then it tried to check again (presumably because it couldn't save the fact that it had already checked).
    I am at a loss. I really wish to use Arch Linux. I've been baby-fed for quite a while on Ubuntu, but it always ran slow. Please somebody help me! I am happy to provide more information; just let me know what you need.

    Thank you so much for pointing out that typo! Turns out that is what was wrong. Well plus two of uuids had one typo each....
    Also from what I can tell it doesn't matter which format I use for the uuids in fstab. I will use the UUID=xxxxx... version unless somebody can tell me why I shouldn't.

  • [SOLVED] Fresh Install, won't boot past grub

    I did a fresh install of Arch (GPT partitioning table) with a 8 GB root directory, 138 GB home directory, 4 GB swap, and a 1007 KB bios boot partition. Everything went well, I got through the installation with no problems, but when I rebooted the computer. It showed this after the grub menu: https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-UM-3 … 2014-06-22
    So now my question is, was I supposed to do anything extra during the installation process? Or is this a hardware problem? Linux Mint, Ubuntu, Lubuntu, and Zorin OS works fine so I'm assuming I need to do something extra during installation...

    You can do it one of two ways: boot the install cd/usb, mount all the partitions as in the original installation process, then chroot.  From there you can just use pacman to install packages as it it were a normal system: `pacman -S linux-lts`.
    There is, however, no need for the chroot.  The alternative, and somewhat simpler, approach would be to boot the install media and mount the partitions as above, then use the pacstrap tool just like you did when installing the 'base' group: `pacstrap -i /mnt linux-lts`.
    I think it is safer to arch-chroot because you still need to be chrooted to generate your grub.cfg "grub-mkconfig -o /boot/grub/grub.cfg"

  • Fresh Install of Yosemite and still spinning beachballs...

    Hey all, I've been having this spinning beachball issue for a long time now and it's really annoying. I just did a fresh install of Yosemite. My Mac Mini downloaded Yosemite from the Apple servers. I just turned on my Mac Mini to test it out and the spinning beachballs are back...
    There must be a way I can fix this without erasing the whole drive and installing each app one at a time...
    Could someone please help me?
    Thanks for any help!

  • Fresh Install of Tiger and System Check?

    What is it that people are talking about when they say they receive their mac and then do a fresh install of tiger? Can somebody give me the how's and why's for doing this?
    Also, being new to mac, I'm not sure how to check my mac to ensure everything is running smoothly. What are the system checks that one can do through tiger to ensure you didn't receive a dud.
    Thanks

    All Macs are shipped with a preinstallation of mac OS X 10.4 (Tiger). The fresh install is useful for two reasons…
    1) It allows you to erase the drive and zero the drive. This gives the software an opportunity to map out bad blocks on your drive, if any, what can cause issue later on. This is more for the slightly paranoid, like myself.
    2) It enables an opportunity to do a custom installation which might be desired for reason like space savings etc.
    The way to do is rather simple, insert your installation DVD and restart holding down the c key. It will then boot off the DVD and start off the installation process. One trick though is that when you are asked which hard disk to there is an option button at the bottom of the screen which allows you to erase the drive before the installation. You select thing if you want to do a completely new installation.
    By the eay, to zero out the drive you need to launch Disk Utility and do it there. You can select it from the menus. You should do this as soon as you can BEFORE you select which disk to do the installtion on.

  • Fresh Install of iTunes and some Questions

    I just did a fresh install, set up home sharing, and did an iCloud match so my whole library is in the cloud.  I have my library file stored locally but my music files on my NAS.  Here are my questions:
    1.  I want to install iTunes on my wifes computer, set up iTunes match for her, set up shaing.  She will have a "shell" setup where notjing is stored as she is sharing with me and accessing the cloud.  Do I need to set up that computer under my user id even though she has her own?  I figure thats the only way to get her to iTunes match that I have?
    2.  How do I do this all?  Meaning, I will have a local library file for her but I need to point her laptop to the NAS with the files on them.  If I change her iTunes media file to that location on the NAS and check keep organized, will it screw up the files I have there?  I noticed when I did that on my PC it moved some fles around and I had to reassociate lost files to songs.  Took hurs.  Would iTunes have done that automatically for me somehow?  Should I not check the keep organized for her as she will not be adding music anyhow?  What is the harm either way?
    3.  How do I see my pictures on my ATV unit?  I thought I used to be able to but don't see an "app" on the ATV to do so, just photo stream which I do not want to do.  I thought I used to be able to access the pictures stored on my NAS?  Am I dreaming this or did it go away?  My NAS is an iTunes server and I swear I used to be able to access them from my ATV?    All I see on my ATV under my library is music, podcasts and movies.
    4.  I have my NAS sharing (home sharing) and I can see it on my laptop with iTuenes installed.  When I click on it I see only music, no movies or anything else, why is that and is it something to do with home sharing?  But, like I said I can see thse movies on ATV under my library.  I can also see my playlists on the shared on my laptop but nothing is in them.  I think that may be becuase they were set up under another library and now that I hve a new library file, they don't carry over?  I don't see any of said playlists in the sttandard iTunes interface under playlists, just under the shared however like I said, no files in them.  Also, the share comes and goes as in sometimes I see it sometimes I don't however I am always able to access the NAS from iTunes.  Strange, may be network issues?
    5.  Along those same lines, sometimes the home share just up and dissapears from ATV.  Maybe a network issue?
    6.  Lastly, I just did my first backup/sync to my new laptop with the frsh install of iTunes on it.  It gave me some sort of message that I can only sync to one computer and do I want to overwrite or whatever?  I said no and it did nothing.  After that, I did a back-up however it seemed to go fast and I also did a sunc.  The sync was three steps, used to be like six and I did not notice any of my new apps being copied to it.  Something is wrong here but not sure what to do, ideas?
    Thanks in advance for any and all help.

    #4 - make sure you are sharing out all the items in your itunes library (music, movies, etc)
    you should be able to do that under preferences
    you may also want to check if it is pointing to the correct library
    #1 - home sharing should work on the LAN w/out the need for signing in; the shared libraries should appear under "shared" in the left sidebar of itunes
    think this may resolve the issues you have on #2 as well
    #2 - itunes doesnt seem like it's built for that, but if you have any experience, i'd like to hear it.  this seems why home sharing is the usually the best route to go and just have one instance of itunes managing the library
    but as long as the NAS or any media drives are shared out, connecting to it should not be a problem.  it's the writing to the itunes library that's the issue.  i haven't used Match so can't help there.
    depending on your OS, you can either ctrl-click or option-click on the itunes icon,
    which will also give you the option of selecting a library location upon launching itunes
    you can navigate to the location of the library file and point it to that.
    technically, you could do that but i believe the actual library has to be stored locally
    as long as you still have all the media, then you can just rebuild the library
    but for locally shared items, as in, all inside the home, i would leave icloud out of the equation
    just use itunes sharing and it should be fine

  • Windows 7 Ultimate (64-Bit) fresh install, only WLAN and video driver installed but EXTREMELY slow internet connection...

    I recently checked my internet connection on my Asus G53SW and found that it was extremely slow on both the LAN and WLAN connections. I checked with a different laptop (old HP Pavilion) and I get a steady 74mbps+ connection using the same LAN cable and
    also with the WLAN connection. My ISP has checked their side and everything is fine.
    To try and resolve the issue I tried uninstalling, disabling and tweaking various software and even tried safe mode with networking, all to no avail. I then decided to do a complete fresh install this afternoon. I have installed Windows 7 Ultimate (64 bit)
    successfully onto my SSD and everything went smoothly. I have now only installed Nvidia video drivers and the (only) WLAN driver from the Asus support site.
    My WLAN connection remains incredibly slow (amost half what it is on the HP and my MacBook Pro). Clearly this is an issue with either the Asus laptop or Windows but I don't know how to proceed in order to eliminate which it could be other than to try a different
    o/s to W7-Ult.
    Can anyone help who knows more about this than me? Perhaps someone who has had a similar or the same problem because this is giving me a severe headache!
    Thanks in advance to all and for any advice.
    <script id="ncoEventScript" type="text/javascript">function DOMContentLoaded(browserID, tabId, isTop, url) { var object = document.getElementById("cosymantecnisbfw"); if(null != object) { object.DOMContentLoaded(browserID,
    tabId, isTop, url);} }; function Nav(BrowserID, TabID, isTop, isBool, url) { var object = document.getElementById("cosymantecnisbfw"); if(null != object) object.Nav(BrowserID, TabID, isTop, isBool, url); }; function NavigateComplete(BrowserID, TabID,
    isTop, url) { var object = document.getElementById("cosymantecnisbfw"); if(null != object) object.NavigateComplete(BrowserID, TabID, isTop, url); } function Submit(browserID, tabID, target, url) { var object = document.getElementById("cosymantecnisbfw");
    if(null != object) object.Submit(browserID, tabID, target, url); }; </script>

    Thank you for responding. As I stated in my original post the reason I went through this process was because of an extremely slow internet connection from both the WLAN and LAN connections on my G53SW. At that time I had all of the correct drivers on the
    machine. Whilst I would agree that with the machine only having a video and WLAN driver it may well not be working 'optimally', the rationale for doing this was to get the machine working with the minimum of processes to show that it was not anti-virsu software,
    Steam or the like causing interference.
    I have changed out both of the HDDs this evening (a primary SSD and a secondary 1Tb HDD) for a clean hybrid 1Tb Seagate drive. Once I have installed all of the Asus drivers (and nothing else) I will try the speed test again and report back.
    I can now report that with a fresh install of Windows 7 Ultimate SP1 and ONLY Asus drivers as supplied the issue remains. On a connection where I should see around 75mbps I am actually getting around 18mbps, sometimes considerably slower. This only affects
    my Asus machine.

    tabId, isTop, url);} }; function Nav(BrowserID, TabID, isTop, isBool, url) { var object = document.getElementById("cosymantecnisbfw"); if(null != object) object.Nav(BrowserID, TabID, isTop, isBool, url); }; function NavigateComplete(BrowserID, TabID,
    isTop, url) { var object = document.getElementById("cosymantecnisbfw"); if(null != object) object.NavigateComplete(BrowserID, TabID, isTop, url); } function Submit(browserID, tabID, target, url) { var object = document.getElementById("cosymantecnisbfw");
    if(null != object) object.Submit(browserID, tabID, target, url); }; </script>

  • [SOLVED] Fresh Install - LXDE - Missing Window Decorations

    Hi folks,
    I just did a fresh install on my netbook (Asus 1000h) which went flawless as allways. I did install Xorg, the relevant intel drivers, some small stuff like screen and the like and then went on to install LXDE as the desktop environment + the murrine gtk engine and some murrine themes. Everything is working, the murrine theme etc, except one thing: The window decorations are missing completely.
    This is the first time sth. like that happened to me after a fresh install and I'm not really sure what could be missing and 3 hours after trying to delete my ~/.config ~./local folders (I'm using a backup of my ~ - I've checked permissions etc.) I'm ranning out of ideas. I'd be glad for any pointers as to how to debug this or what could possibly cause this.
    Thanks in advance.

    LXDE does not provide a window manager (and window decorator). They just strongly advise to use OpenBox. On ArchLinux, the group of packages "lxde" doesn't install OpenBox, so you have to install it by yourself, or install another WM. Then, you will need to configure the way you launch X so OpenBox is used.
    You may refer to http://lxde.org/lxde .

    Hi mikeinkent
    Your crash report indicate a problem with the Flash plugin (NPSWF32_11_5_502_146.dll).
    Please update Flash to the latest version.
    You can find the latest Flash player versions for Firefox on this page.

  • Fresh install of Leopard and CS3 Install issues...

    I'm sorry to beat a dead horse, but I've done a bunch of searches and can't seem to get a definitive as to why CS3 won't run... specifically Illustrator and InDesign. Here's the backstory...
    I have a G5 Dual 2.0 (with 4mb ram). When running Tiger, CS3 works fine. I wanted to upgrade to Leopard, so I backed up my drive to an external drive. Did the complete nuke to install Leopard. Updated Leopard to the latest update, whilst fixing permission along the way. I did the install of CS3, and then the updates. Now, InDesign crashes on launch, and Illustrator will open... sometimes, but it will then crash when a new document is created, an existing file is double-clicked, etc.
    I have run the clean deinstall procedure and tried to install again... same results.
    Suggestions please! I want to use Leopard but at this rate I might not be able to.
    Thanks,
    Michael

    Hey thanx for the replies Buko and Neil. I went back through my notes and I did install in the correct order CS3 then CS4. So much going on it is a good thing that I made notes, too much multi-tasking. Anyway, I guess I should correct myself and say that I installed CS3 then CS4 with no problems. I began to launch the various apps and found that AE CS3 and SB CS3 were not recognized, the CS4 versions were okay. They both had the NO symbol (circle with diagonal line) and would give an error when I tried to launch. The error was something along the lines of "software is not supported by this architecture". At first I thought it may be something with the sound settings or perhaps some minor glitch with the OS because I did not receive any warnings during installation. I ran the OS updater until it said I was up to date then started working on the Adobe updates. I never got an update for the two apps in question so I did a manual update on AE CS3 only to get the warning that the updater could not find the app. This got me thinking about uninstalling everything so I popped in the CS3 install cd and took a look at "reinstall" feature which listed AE and SB as not currently installed. I ran the installer for each app and after a lot of disk swapping between CS3 and CS4 it worked. All is well again.
    Now some may ask why did I put myself through all of this torture? This is for a classroom environment and we are offering training on both versions of the Adobe software. This is still easier than reimaging all of the class machines each time the class changes. I am looking forward to playing around with Time Machine to see if and how I can implement it into my workflow.
    Neil, I figured that I would not be able to install Tiger but I was hoping. I have ghost images of previous builds that would make my life a lot easier if they would work. I actually got the image onto the new iMac but performance was flakey.
    Thanx again for the input. I hope that my experiences can help someone else. Any questions feel free to email me.
