[SOLVED]GPG no longer supports --no-use-standard-socket?

I've used an SD card for where I store my gnupghome for a long time. I have delegated subkeys and all the configuration for them there. It's mounted to /mnt/keys on vfat. These cards use a FAT file system as I use these keys on multiple operating systems.
GPG with release 2.1 has removed the 'standard socket' options, which means now if your gnupg home is on any file system that can't create socket files (see: FAT), gpg-agent can no longer run. Ironically, this is also the release that *removes* all support for running gpg without an agent!
I'm disappointed this was not considered news for arch, I even wrote a small silly wrapper just for forcing me to read front page stories! (http://github.com/codemac/yosumiru)
The GPG news page had the following:
With GnuPG 2.1 the need of GPG_AGENT_INFO has been completely removed and the variable is ignored. Instead a fixed Unix domain socket named S.gpg-agent in the GnuPG home directory (by default ~/.gnupg) is used. The agent is also started on demand by all tools requiring services from the agent.
Any thoughts on how I can keep my gnupg on a FAT filesystem and still run the agent? I'm feeling pretty hosed right now, and am pretty confused why this feature was removed from gpg agent, as this would be as simple as keeping the old functionality, but maybe forcing the --no-use-standard-socket option to be in gpg.conf

That's exactly what I used to do as well: mount a USB key read-only and run gpg --homedir /path/to/usb.

I don't understand why you insist on using --no-use-standard-socket...
Some background: traditionally gpg-agent is started by a DE (e.g. xfce4-session starts it). This is useful because gpg-agent also manages ssh keys. However, this is not required anymore because agents are started on-demand and multiple agents can run concurrently.
Now, if you didn't have a vFAT FS, all is good as you call gpg --homedir because it will invoke gpg-agent with the correct --homedir flag.
So, all you need to do now is to rsync your gnupg dir on the SD card to some temp dir, e.g. /dev/shm/gnupg and use this dir as an argument to --homedir, and don't care about the agent at all.

    Hi,
The best "all-around" antivirus is chosen by you. We have no influence on what antivirus you choose as it's based on personal preference but I can give you some samples on what I know. The below are all <b>free</b> by the way.
    *Avast (http://www.avast.com/en-us/index)

    *BitDefender (http://www.bitdefender.com/solutions/free.html)

But in the end, it's up to you.
P.S. This is a Firefox support forum used for technical support on Firefox. This thread is off-topic and doesn't belong here but I see that it's your first question here, I'll let it slide :)
Let me know which antivirus you chose.

    Ella:
It is unclear from your post if your inability to use Pearson CD-ROMs occurred after you purchased a new Mac, or simply upgraded your current one to Mavericks.
If you simply upgraded to Mavericks, your easiest solution and best operating environment would be to use Disk Utility to partition your hard drive and reinstall Snow Leopard (with the optional Rosetta) into that partition.  You could then use the "dual-boot" process (System Preferences:Startup Disk) to determine with environment is operating on your Mac: Snow Leopard when you want to run the CD-ROM or Mavericks where you need more modern capabilities.
Note that if you must have the concurrent ability to run the CD-ROM and  Mavericks, then, the previous information posted by others in this thread is your only solution and there is no point in your taking the extra steps to partition your hard drive and install Snow Leopard.
The previous information provided to you is largely accurate except for one point that is irrelevant to your concerns and will only generate needless irrelevant repetitious responses if I point out what it is.
The great tragedy in today's USA society is the government's failure to properly fund education combined with the high amount and cost of student loans and their inability to be discharged in bankruptcy.
The combination of all of these factors leads educational publisher's such as Pearson no financial incentive to upgrade many of their essential products for the education market, including rewriting their CD-ROMs to work directly on Intel Macs without the addition of Rosetta, which is not longer supplied by OS X after Snow Leopard.
Having seen this problem posted on this forum quite regularly over the last few years, I purchased a demo CD-ROM from Pearson on Amazon and I am able to report that indeed they will run on a Mavericks (or Mt. Lion or Lion) Mac that has Snow Leopard Server ("SLS") installed into a virtualization program (in my case Parallels), as shown here:

Previous posts have described the telephone process and part number to obtain SLS from Apple for the now 95% discounted price of $20!  Parallels offers a 14-day free trial download of Parallels (do not activate it until you are in possession of SLS):

  • Is my Asus tablet no longer support for using Flash Player?

I just bought an Asus Transformer TF300T (OS Andriod 4.0.3) two weeks ago.  It came with Flash Player 11.1 pre-installed.  I noticed whenever I would try and play some of my games that require Flash, my browser would close.  I wouldn't get any kind of error message or anything.  I just saw the artricle today regarding Adobe Flash Player and mobile devices and the lack of support after 8/15/2012.  I checked the list of certified devices and my model number isn't listed.  I don't know if I would have better luck installing a previous version of Flash Player, or if I'm just out of luck.  Any ideas what I can do?

  • Many online sites say no longer support .... using Snow Leopard 10.6.8 on mac mini. What do I do?

Many online sites for insurance, banking, etc. say they no longer support my system.  I use Snow Leopard that came with my Mac Mini and it's update if I go to the "software update" which is 10.6.8.  What do I do?

Your Mac Mini is capable of being upgraded to Yosemite (free in the Mac App Store). The specified minimum of RAM is 2GB but you are likely to find it runs very slowly on that, with a lot of beachballing. I don't know what the maximum RAM is but you should consider installing extra if you can. Even so you may well find it's rather slow - Yosemite is really optimized for modern Macs running SSDs.
Snow Leopard isn't getting any more security updates by the look of things, so there's a lot to be said for upgrading it. However if you install the latest FireFox (36.0.4) that will run on Snow Leopard and should at least solve the inaccessible sites problem.
If you do decide to go for Yosemite you should make comprehensive backups: I would advise if possible cloning the entire Mac to an external hard disk, so that if you find you don't like Yosemite you can clone back and be no worse off. Otherwise downgrading is frankly a pain to do.

    Welcome to Apple Communities
PowerPC applications are unsupported in newer versions. You can upgrade Photoshop or you can install Snow Leopard in a partition.
    1. Open Disk Utility (Applications > Utilities) and select your drive
    2. Go to Partitions tab, press + button, create a new partition and press Apply
    3. Insert the Snow Leopard install DVD and reboot pressing C key
    4. Install it in the new partition
    5. If you want to change boot, go to System Preferences > Startup Disk and select 10.7

    How can I fix this?

We need to sort out some facts here first:
    •  You cannot be running Mt. Lion on your iMac G5.  What Mac is it?  What is the Model Identifier listed in About This Mac; More Info; Hardware Overview
    •  What is the model of your Epson Scanner?
    •  Have you attempted to scan using Image Capture, located in your Applications folder?
    •  Your Palm Pilot software will only run in Snow Leopard; so depending upon which Mac you have, you will either have to:
    1)  partition your hard drive or add an external hard drive and install Snow Leopard into it to "dual-boot" when you want to access you Palm software, or
    2)  install Snow Leopard Server (now available from Apple for $20 telephone orders USA & Canda only) into Parallels 8 to run your Palm software in Mt. Lion:

I didnt't say that our business is using Linux Desktops. I wrote, our main clientele is. And what our customers do like to use is something we cannot control...
    >What difference does it make to you if Adobe releases a new version of Reader that is not supported on Linux?
a new Adobe Reader version that's supported on Linux would be nice. a dialogue between Adobe and Linux developers would be nice...
    >As long as the old versions can open the files correctly, that's all that matters, no?
No, not if our staff is trained to use the newest Adobe Acrobat (trainings are usually for the newest versions) and uses that to produce forms. Now the files open correctly. But what will be in some months or years? Do people working on Linux do have to print the forms then again to fill in?
So do you recommend that we stop the process of producing electronic forms and stay with paper-fill-in forms? Is that the goal of Adobe? (maybe not so clever for your "financial viability"?!?!? ... ein schuss ins eigene bein?!?!)
    >Adobe is a public company and therefore it's not going to maintain a version of its software at great cost if it's not financially viable. It's as simple as that...
So it is to be interpreted that Adobe is interested in killing Linux cause if users cannot work with let's say forms, they will have to switch to something that can do that for them...
We definitely don't want to force Windows or Mac on our clientele. So as far as I get it, we will go back to paper forms and terminate our licence agreements with Adobe and deinstall it...

  • Just upgraded to Mavericks and my HP6100 printer no longer works, when I try to reload the software it says PowerPC apps no longer supported.  Is there a way to use my HP6100 Printer with Mavericks?

Just upgraded my 2009 iMac (3.06 Ghz, core 2 duo $GB 1067 Mhz DDR3) to Mavericks OSX 10.9.5 and my HP6100 printer no longer works, when I try to reload the software it says PowerPC apps no longer supported.  Printer says the software was improperly installed. Is there a way to use my HP6100 Printer with Mavericks or do I need to go back to Mountain Lion or Snow Leopard?

It's not clear whether your printer is included in the Apple list - there is an Officejet 6100 and a couple of other types. Go to the page linked to above and use the browser search for 6100.
I'm afraid HP are notorious for not supporting older printers - I had the same problem. Probably they hope you will buy another printer (I did, but it was a Canon). I did look on HP's site and couldn't see a driver - you could give it a try (make sure you have the exactly correct printer name):
    http://www8.hp.com/uk/en/support-search.html?tab=1#/qryterm=HP6100&search_search type=s-002
Alternatively ou could try Gutenprint (open source software):
    http://gimp-print.sourceforge.net/MacOSX.php
I found it would indeed drive the printer, but the colour dithering wasn't very satisfactory and the duplex printing bolt-on wouldn't work. However as Gutenprint is free it's worth trying to see if it's any good for you.

  • I have just bought a new Imac and it will not load my copy of FCE 3.5 as it says "PowerPC applications are no longer supported". So how do I get to use the version of FCE I am used to and have paid for ?

I have just bought a new Imac and it will not load my copy of FCE 3.5 as it says "PowerPC applications are no longer supported". So how do I get to use the version of FCE I am used to and have paid for ?

I do not have any experience with Final Cut, but if you have existing projects that you MUST access; then you are in need of a solution on your new iMac in Mountain Lion!
Unfortunately you got caught up in the minor miracle of Rosetta.  Originally licensed by Apple when it migrated from the PowerPC CPU platform that it had used from the mid-1990's until the Intel CPU platform in 2006, Rosetta allowed Mac users to continue to use their library of PPC software transparently in emulation.
However, Apple's license to continue to use this technology expired with new releases of OS X commencing with Lion (and now Mountain Lion).  While educational efforts have been made over the last 6 years, the fact is that Rosetta was SO successful that many users were caught unaware UNTIL they upgraded to Lion or Mountain Lion.
    Workarounds:
    1.  Purchase a used Mac that will run Snow Leopard (with the optional Rosetta installed) and continue to run FCE on that Mac (you can actually use Screen Sharing with a "headless" used Snow Leopard Mac Mini and use the 27" screen from your iMac to view and work FCE in the Mac Mini environment);
    2.  Upgrade to an Intel compatible version of FCE and hope it converts your existing projects to its newer format correctly.  There is much debate that the newer version of Final Cut are eliminating many needed features; for example Final Cut Pro X vs. Final Cut Pro 6 -- many users are staying with version 6;
    3.  Install Snow Leopard (with Rosetta) into Parallels and then install FCE in the Snow Leopard environment:
Full Snow Leopard installation instructions here:
    http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=1365439
NOTE: STEP ONE of the instructions must currently be completed on a Snow Leopard or Lion Mac and the resulting modified Snow Leopard.cdr install file can then be moved over to your Mountain Lion Mac for completion of the remaining steps.
NOTE 2:  Computer games with complex, 3D or fast motion graphics make not work well or at all in virtualization.
