[SOLVED] Graphics performance on AOA 150 netbook and composition

Hello everyone.
First of all, I'm unsure is this post a bug report, a call for a help or a "how to". :-)
I'm using Arch on this netbook for 2 years now and I have to admit, that there is constant graphical performance slowdown with each version of xorg and xf86-video-intel increment (graphical controller is Intel Corporation Mobile 945GME Express Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 03)). When I just had installed Arch, I'd had about 600 fps with glxgears (yes, I know, that glxgears is not a benchmark, but it's affected by all the same lags as overall graphical subsystem). As of few upgrades, fps became ~300. Then, when vsync was made necessary by Intel, I'd had ~60 fps. Now performance of graphical subsystem is extremely low -- ~25-30 fps. This slowdown affects both 3D and 2D, the gears in glxgears are rotating with pauses. The most interesting thing is the mouse activity influence. When I move the mouse during the test, fps increases. If I'll move mouse constantly during the test, I'll get ~60 fps.
For this two years I'd used different window managers and desktop environments in different combinations, but result was the same: desktop composition had always decreased fps rate. But with cairo-compmgr I'd got very strange result. If it's active, fps is constantly ~60 and gears are moving smoothly, no matters how I move the mouse. As for me, the main question is why is this happens and how this result can be achieved without any composition (cairo-compmgr is quiet buggy for now).
As of practical usage, now I use gnome3 in legacy mode (because of lags under mutter) with cairo-compmgr running, all it's visual effects are turned off. Fps is ~60.

  • Graphics performance issues as virtualbox guest

    Hi everyone,
I've been running arch natively on my 2013 macbook pro retina for a while but recently decided to run it in virtualbox hosted in OSX. I've got arch installed and am running gnome shell in the virtual machine, the problem I'm having is that the graphics performance is terrible, windows judder and lag when moving them around the desktop and scrolling is extremely jerky. Things i have done:
    - I have installed the guest additions and made sure the guest modules are loaded.
    - I have checked the 'enable 3D acceleration' box in virtualbox settings
    - I have also checked that DRI is enabled using glxinfo.
One possible complication is that i am running virtualbox beta 5 but I have also tried with the stable edition and experienced the same issues.
I have no idea how to diagnose this and don't even know if acceptable performance is possible with this set up so any help is very welcome.
    Thanks
    Alex

Does your glxinfo show "Gallium" or "Chromium" as the renderer (not related to the browser)?  If it shows Gallium, 3D acceleration is not working.
You mention running Gnome; If you're using GDM as your desktop manager, that's likely to be your issue.  Gnome itself is fine, but GDM 3.16 breaks 3d acceleration in virtualbox guests. There's a bug open on the Gnome Bugzilla about it: https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=749390
Try switching to LightDM; that fixes it for me.  If that solves your problem you might want to add to the bug report.

  • GPU/CPU Temps and Graphics Performance Questions

I am also experiencing some similar oddities with my 15in UMBP. As background on my setup I am running 10.5.7 (the problem began before the update) and I work in an air-conditioned office with a cooling pad for my frequently "toasty" MBP. I have noticed that my temps are significantly higher while running on the NVIDIA 9600M GT vs. the 9400M, and also I use iStat to monitor my system.
Here's the problems. With only Mail, iChat, Safari 4, and iTunes running (87-93% idle) I frequently see temps hit 150-155 F for the GPU 145-150 F for the CPU. While running on the 9400 with the same applications (87-92% idle) I see temps from 90-95 F for both GPU and CPU. When I had first gotten my MBP I used it mostly with Aperture 2 and I thought it was strange that I couldn't tell the difference in performance between the 9600 and the 9400. Later I tried to use it from time to time in Win XP (bootcamp) for gaming, but it would get so hot that i could hardly touch the keyboard and the graphics performance wasn't nearly what i thought it should be. In fact I was only able to run games slightly better than on my company provided Dell Inspiron D620 (old POS). On the Mac side I tried to test out the performance of my GPU by setting the graphics in X-plane just to the point that with the 9600M GT enabled the program wouldn't tell me that I had too many graphics options turned on. After getting that dialed in I switched over to try it with the 9400 and the performance was nearly identical, and maybe even a little better... I'm not a genius when it comes to computers by any means. I don't know very much about what kind of performance I should be seeing from these two cards, but I would think that the 9600 would greatly out perform the 9400.
Any feedback or advice would be greatly appreciated

I used istat pro to get the temperatures and fan speeds. You can download it free here:
    http://www.apple.com/downloads/dashboard/status/istatpro.html
I turned it on a few hours ago and the temperature of one of the cores reached 70 degrees C and the fan speeds all went up to around 3000 rpm. I'm just going to leave it off for now and take it in to get serviced. Only problem is I have to make an appointment and who knows how long it will take to get it in. Hope it works out for you.

  • T520 - 42435gg / Sound stutter and slow Graphic performance with Intel Rapid Storage AHCI Driver

    Hi everybody,
I have serious Problems with my 42435gg
Any time I install the Intel Storage AHCI Driver (I've tried plenty of different versions) which is suggested by System Update I experience a horrible Sound stutter and slow Graphic performance in Windows 7 64-Bit.
The funny thing in this case: If the external e-sata port is connected the problems do not occur. If the port is unused again, the stutter begins immediately.
The only thing I can do is using the Windows internal Storage Driver with which I am not able to use my DVD recorder for example.
The device was sent to lenovo for hardware testing with no result. It was sent back without any repairing.
    Anybody experience on this?
    Kind regards,
    Daniel

Did you try the 11.5 RST beta? Load up DPClat and see if DPC conditions are favorable.
What are you using to check graphics performance?

  • [SOLVED] [QEMU] Improve graphics performance/resolution

    Hi,
I use qemu's kvm feature and successfuly installed Windows 7 in it.
Everything works quite well except the graphics performance being very poor.
When I move the cursor it starts flickering ('lagging') and I can't set the resolution fitting my laptop screen with a native resolution of 1366x768. (So currently using 1024x768 in the VM)
I start qemu with -vga vmware.
command I use for starting qemu:
    qemu-system-x86_64 -enable-kvm -machine type=pc,accel=kvm -cpu host -vga vmware -full-screen -k de -usb -usbdevice tablet -m 3072 /path/to/image.qcow2
Is there a way to fix this??

Finally got it working now, performance is surprisingly good!!!
I used to have Windows 7 Home Premium, then I discovered you cannot remote-connect to Home Prem as this version lacks that feature
So I got me Ultimate 64bit and it works.
I start the qemu vm with:
    qemu-system-x86_64 -enable-kvm -machine type=pc,accel=kvm -cpu host -nographic -k de -usb -m 4096 -net nic -net user,hostfwd=tcp::3389-:3389 /home/kanikuly/Pictures/ISO/Win7Ult64Bit.qcow2
    and rdesktop with:
    rdesktop -g 100% -E -D -K -P -f -z -x b -r sound:off -a 32 -u *** -p *** localhost

  • Bootcamp w. XP Pro SP2: Ultra-slow "sticky" scrolling and graphics performa

    Hi,
unpacking my Uni-MBP 15" today was unfortunately sofar the best part of owning a new Mac:
After installing and running Xp Pro Sp2 with Bootcamp, I'm quite disappointed:
Scrolling pages as well as general graphics performance is - sofar- horrible.
It also looks like there is no good driver easily available to correctly support the 2 graphics cards of the system - neither on the OSX DVD nor Apple support or Nvidia ( I tried all the downloads)
XP advanced display settings tells me that it doesn't know what cards are installed (set to an unknown Plug and Play VGA adapter).
I am sure there is somewhere a helpful post, but I couldn't find it - therefore:
HELP! How do I get decent graphics performance in XP with my MBP???
    Thank you for your help!

  • Dedicated graphics shuts down (?) ... stuttering videos and low framerate graphic performance

    Hi,
Since quite some time now I have an issue with my macbook pro that seems to be related to the dedicated graphics card and/or the dynamic switching from integrated to dedicated.
The computer runs fine and then suddenly, while watching a flash video, a high resolution html5 youtube video, or playing the video game hearthstone the frame rate of the video / video game drops dramatically.
The only fix is a reboot of the computer and then it is fine again for some time.
It might be related to the power management as it seems to occur more often when on battery or when the battery is low.
I have gfxCardStatus 2.3 installed and when this happens it still tells me that I am running on the dedicated graphic card.
Is that a known problem and is there a fix to it?
I tried to turn off "automatic graphics switching" in the energy saver settings. But this did not help.
    specs:
    Macbook Pro 15inch Mid 2010
    8GB RAM – 2.66 GHz i7
NVIDIA GeForce GT 330M 512 MB graphics
    OS X 10.9.5
    Thank You!

The model identifier 6.2 MBP that you have has experienced GPU problems.  There was a replacement program, but that has expired.
I suggest that you make an appointment at an Apple store genius bar and have the MBP evaluated for FREE.  Mention the GPU issue because there is a special test for it.
If it turns out that the discrete GPU is the problem, then you can download this application which will allow you to disengage the discrete GPU and use only the integrated one.  This will compromise graphics performance.
    https://gfx.io/
A permanent solution would be a logic board replacement.
    Ciao.

  • Mac Mini Core Duo and 23" Cinema Display: video graphics performance

I know the Mac Mini Core Duo and the 23" Cinema Display are compatible but can anybody tell me if one can expect better graphics performance when using a 20" display or does it not make any difference?

Thanks Dan but maybe I didn't make myself clear. What I'm interested in is whether or not one can expect a noticeable difference in video graphics performance between a 20" Cinema Display and a 23" Cinema Display, when connected to a Mac Mini Core Duo.

  • Improving graphics performance in DIAdem 11.0 Report?

    Dear Forum,
when working on a Report layout, the poor graphic performance of DIAdem is a real problem for me.
For example, many diagrams with lots of data are on one page. One opens the proficiencies of one of the diagrams and changes e.g. the curves color or whatever and closes the dialog window. After this, the whole Report page is refreshed - wich takes up to one minute, depending on the amount of data displayed.
The strange thing is, when I close the given dialog window, and while the report page is being refreshed sent DIAdem to the taskbar and open any other application window, the process of refreshing the screen takes only 1 second instead of 30 seconds.
The question is: Is there a tweak to improve the speed how DIAdem refreshes the report page? Or is there any workaround other than switching applications during refreshing?
    Thanks a lot.
    Greetings from Germany
    Oliver

    Hello Oliver,
The easiest way to speed up the graphics performance in Report with large data files (or 3D graphs with lots of nodes) is to turn off the "Data Layer" (German: "Datenebene") in the "View" menu (German: "Ansicht").
That function basically turns off the display of all data in Report, but retains the axis systems, texts, etc., so you can still move them, place them and edit them without having to guess sizes. Once you're done with the report, simply turn the data layer back on and you're ready to create a PDF, print or save the result as an image file (JPG, BMB, etc.).
I think the performance difference you described (1 vs. 30 seconds) is due to the fact that once DIAdem has drawn a page, it retains an image in memory and will simply draw that image when you bring DIAdem to the foreground (or maximize it). After any edits you make to the report (e.g. change the color of a graph), DIAdem redraws the complete page from scratch, which takes much longer then just re-displaying an image that has already been drawn previously. Someone from the DIAdem R&D team could probably do a better job explaining this, but I think this is the explanation for the time difference in drawing.
Anyway, the "Data Layer" trick should hopefully solve your problem, let us know if that works for you.

  • 10.6.7 Serious Graphics Performance Trouble

    Hello.
Today I updated my MacBook from 10.6.5 to 10.6.7 using the Combo Updater as well as doing a few other system updates. Already since 10.6.4 my graphics performance had worsened considerably as I had what appeared to be overheat trouble with the GPU after 15 minutes of gaming at most, making the FPS drop from 60 to 15 randomly.
With the update to 10.6.7 I now can't even exceed 20 frames per second in the first place anymore. Games in which the error occurs: FlightGear 2.0.0 pre3, Redline 1.0.5
Apart from in games, my Mac generally gets "stuck" particularly often, no matter if it's supposed to move a 15 MB video file into trash or if I'm editing a couple of images with Gimp.
What could cause this and how could the error be solved?
    Hardware:
    MacBook Aluminium Unibody 13"
Intel Core 2 Duo 2.0 Ghz
    2 GB DDR3-RAM
NVIDIA GeForce 9400M 256 MB (shared)

Found this on another discussion forum.
These are the .kext and other files which needs to be replaced. You should back up before you install any packages:
    /System/Library/Extensions/GeForce.kext
    /System/Library/Extensions/GeForce7xxxGLDriver.bundle
    /System/Library/Extensions/GeForceGA.plugin
    /System/Library/Extensions/GeForceGLDriver.bundle
    /System/Library/Extensions/GeForceVADriver.bundle
    /System/Library/Extensions/NVDAGF100Hal.kext (if it exists)
    /System/Library/Extensions/NVDANV40Hal.kext
    /System/Library/Extensions/NVDANV50Hal.kext
    /System/Library/Extensions/NVDAResman.kext
    /System/Library/Extensions/NVSMU.kext
You can get around the hardware verification check by right-clicking the .mpkg and selecting "Show Package Contents".
In the "Contents" folder that's shown, navigate to "Packages".
Inside that you'll see three .pkg files: Display Driver.pkg, OpenGL Driver.pkg, and Video Driver.pkg.
Each of these hopefully installs without a hardware verification check.
There is another solion given by edit setup checking algorithm:
Simply locate "distribution.dist" inside driver package,
then delete part of program with "unsupported_title" and "unsupported_message" strings, save and install.

  • Performance issue with high CPU and IO

    Hi guys,
I am encountering huge user response time on a production system and I don’t know how to solve it.
Doing some extra tests and using the instrumentation that we have in the code we concluded that the DB is the bottleneck.
We generated some AWR reports and noticed the CPU was in top wait events. Also noticed that in a random manner some simple sql take a long time to execute. We activated the sql trace on the system and noticed that for very simple SQLs (unique index access on one table) we have huge exec times. 9s
In the trace file the huge time we had it in fetch area: 9.1s cpu and elapsed 9.2.
And no or very small waits for this specific SQL.
it seems like the bottle neck is on the CPU but at that point there were very few processes running on the DB. Why can we have such a big cpu wait on a simple select? This is a machine with 128 cores. We have quicker responses on machines smaller/busier than this.
We noticed that we had a huge db_cache_size (12G) and after we scale it down we noticed some improvements but not enough. How can I prove that there is a link between high CPU and big cache_size? (there was not wait involved in SQL execution). what can we do in the case we need big DB cache size?
The second issue is that I tried to execute an sql on a big table (FTS on a big table. no join). Again on that smaller machine it runs in 30 seconds and on this machine it runs in 1038 seconds.
Also generated a trace for this SQL on the problematic machine:
call     count       cpu    elapsed       disk      query    current        rows
    Parse        1      0.00       0.00          0          0          0           0
    Execute      1      0.00       0.00          0          0          0           0
    Fetch        1    402.08    1038.31    1842916    6174343          0           1
    total        3    402.08    1038.32    1842916    6174343          0           1
      db file sequential read                     12419        0.21         40.02
      i/o slave wait                             135475        0.51        613.03
      db file scattered read                     135475        0.52        675.15
      log file switch completion                      5        0.06          0.18
latch: In memory undo latch                     6        0.00          0.00
latch: object queue header operation            1        0.00          0.00
********************************************************************************The high CPU is present here also but here I have huge wait on db file scattered read.
Looking at the session with the select the AWG_wait for db scattered read was 0.5. on the other machine it is like 0.07.
I though this is an IO issue. I did some IO tests at SO level and it seems like the read and writes operation are very fast…much faster than the machine that has the awg_wait smaller. Why the difference in waits?
One difference between these two DBs is that the problem one has the db block size = 16k and the other one has 8k.
I received some reports done at OS level on CPU and IO usage on the problematic machine (in normal operations). It seems like the CPU is very used and the IO stays very low.
On the other machine, the smaller and the faster one, it is other way around.
What is the problem here? How can I test further? Can I link the high CPU to low/slow IO?
we have 10G on sun os with ASM.
    Thanks in advance.

Yes, there are many things you can and should do to isolate this. But first check MOS Poor Performance With Oracle9i and 10g Releases When Using Dynamic Intimate Shared Memory (DISM) [ID 1018855.1] isn't messing you up to start.
Also, be sure and post exact patch levels for both Oracle and OS.
Be sure and check all your I/O settings and see what MOS has to say about those.
Are you using ASSM? See Long running update
Since it got a little better with shrinking the SGA size, that might indicate (wild speculation here, something like) one of the problems is simply too much thrashing within the SGA, as oracle decides "small" objects being full scanned in memory is faster than range scans (or whatever) from disk, overloading the cpu, not allowing the cpu to ask for other full scans from I/O. Possibly made worse by row level locking, or some other app issue that just does too much cpu.
You probably have more than one thing wrong. High fetch count might mean you need to adjust the array size on the clients.
Now that that is all out of the way, if you still haven't found the problem, go through http://oracle-randolf.blogspot.com/2009/02/basic-sql-statement-performance.html
Edit: Oh, see Solaris 10 memory management conflicts with Automatic PGA Memory Management [ID 460424.1] too.

Hi, I got my Mac in 2009 with photoshop elements on it - it's recently been wiped, however before the process we put Photoshop onto a hard drive, we then copied it back over and it no longer works, I'm getting error code 150:30 and I'm being asked for a password... any ideas how to get it working again?

You can never, never migrate an installed copy of PSE. It's just too complex and you can't get to all the bits and bobs.
First you will have to download and run this:
Use the CC Cleaner Tool to solve installation problems | CC, CS3-CS6
which will not seem to do anything, but is necessary to break the links within PSE so that you can pitch the bits manually. Then you will have to go around, not only to applications, but also to your username>library>preferences and most importantly to the library at the top level of your hard drive>application support>adobe, and remove everything you can find. Spotlight will not help with this kind of search, so don't try that.
Then you can install PSE from scratch.

  • Fullscreen performance issue on a Netbook: not useable on AtomN270

I have a preformance issue, I have a S10e Netbook, and I tought that the performance should be enough to watch iTunes SD videos. Without going into fullscreen I can see that I am reaching the limits, as soon as I try in fullscreen it is the end. If I watch the same videos in VLC (take one bought on iTunes Plus for instance), there is absolutely no problems, and the CPU still has margin. VLC can even decode videos with 720x480 encoded for AppleTV profile and it plays very fluid. So what is the problem with iTunes ? Why is video playing so sluggish ? Any tipps to make this useable ?

Has anyone a trick or can just confirm that it is the way it is ?

5th generation ipod not detected by my windows xp.  works fine on other pc.  performed necessary steps to remove and reinstall itunes but having same issue. is there a driver i can download to pc then direct to that specific location when installing?

I have a similar issue - my iPod nano connects and is visible in Device Manager yet invisible in My Computer and iTunes. I've tried everything I can possibly think of to try and solve this myself, all in vain.
Mine is a nano 4G. I've been using it for quite some time without the slightest problem. I have been using WINAMP instead of iTunes to manage my darling nano.
Then, one fine day I bought a new computer and the nano would not show up in My Computer, though the nano display shows "Do not disconnect". On my old computer it worked (and still works) absolutely fine with win XP as well as with win7 (the later I currently use on my new/problematic computer, which I bought last summer and that's how long I've had this problem).
Of course, after several first attempts I gave up and installed iTunes. I've tried using the Apple support article "iPod not recognized in 'My Computer' and in iTunes for Windows":
    - reset
    - fully charged,
    - cable works fine on two other computers
    - in normal or disk mode makes no difference
    - tried to find anything useful in the diagnostics mode
    - reinstalled iTunes several different times since then to the latest version
    - I've unplugged every other USB device except for my mouse and keyboard and tried several different USB ports on my motherboard (USB 3.0 and conventional), as well as trying different USB- related options in my BIOS.
    - I've never used any Mac with this ipod
    - I've tried fiddling with the win7 Services by stopping and restarting them and of course
    - uninstalling the iPod drivers in Device Manager. After such an uninstall the ipod would automatically be recognised and "ready for use", i.e. being invisible in My Computer.
    - Attempted to find any possible third-party conflict with msconfig or the possibility that my ipod is being confused for a network drive (for which I've disconnected my HDD, leaving only my SSD with the OS).
Sometimes, iTunes would note that iPod service (or something, can't remember exactly) failed to install properly and asked to try and repair it. I would click YES! and voila - no change! The ipod would rarely show up in iTunes on my problematic computer like this:
iTunes would warn me that the nano would need restoring so I would try and do it on my haunted machine upon which iTunes would freeze like you seen in the picture.
Despite this, I've updated and restored the nano on my father's computer to the latest version without any problems. This though, did not solve my problem in any way.
I can load music to my nano through my old computer (which for me is a real pain and hassle) and the gadget works normally in terms of its disconnected functionality.
I've taken my nano to the local service for repair and they said it was fine. Mercifully, they didn't charge for the diagnostics service (gee, thanks for not ripping me off!).
Here are two screengrabs from my Device Manager
and Devices and Printers screens on my comp:
That is my sad story as far as I can remember. It's most likely something with the drivers or something along those lines though I'm out of ideas at this point.
If you think you have any idea PLEASR HELP, I'M DESPERATE!
