[Solved] GRUB fails to Recall previous entry; GRUB_SAVEDEFAULT="true"

I have used this for years even pre-archlinux.  Recently it has stopped working.
From my /etc/default/grub
GRUB_DEFAULT=saved
GRUB_SAVEDEFAULT="true"
From pacman -Qii grub
Version : 1:2.02.beta2-1
Architecture : x86_64
Build Date : Sun 05 Jan 2014 11:07:40 AM PST
Install Date : Fri 10 Jan 2014 09:00:39 AM PST
/etc/default/grub has not changed except for add/remove GRUB_DISABLE_SUBMENU=y for the bug FS#38234
Am I the only one experiencing this?

After changing /boot/grub/grub.cfg so that load_env is replaced with load_env -f /boot/grub/grubenv and all save_env are changed to save_env -f /boot/grub/grubenv there is no change in behavior.

    Things I tried:
Replace this line in grub.cfg with
    linux /boot/vmlinuz-linux root=UUID=d1d0825c-25d1-4cbe-811f-725d9ef8d034 rw cryptdevice=UUID=d1d0825c-25d1-4cbe-811f-725d9ef8d034:cryptroot quiet
Do mkinitcpio -p linux but the hook ecrypt is there, so I assume it's a grub issue.
    In
    /etc/default/grub
replace GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX="cryptdevice=/dev/sda6:cryptroot" with actual UUID, etc.
    Grub config was made with
    grub-mkconfig -o /boot/grub/grub.cfg
    Grub was installed with
    grub-install --target=i386-pc --recheck /dev/sda

  • [SOLVED] Grub failing to install on UEFI

I am trying to do a fresh install on my desktop and am running into issues when installing grub.
    My setup is: 3x500GB drives (sda1 is a 1GB partition for /boot/efi, sd[bc]1 raid 1 for swap, sd[abc]2 raid 5 with LVM for /, /home, and /tmp). ASUS m5a97 LE R2.0 motherboard.
I am currently chroot into /mnt, where my / LVM is mounted, I have dm_mod loaded, and I was following the instructions here.
I get an error from grub toward the end saying "Path  `/boot/grub' is not readable by GRUB on boot. Installation is impossile. Aborting."  (there's a LOT of output before that because of --debug.
I tried looking around, and I saw some people say that they had success with a fresh install when upgrading, but that doesn't really apply to me as this is already a fresh install.
Does anyone have any ideas what could be causing this? Thanks in advance!
    David

slackcub wrote:Alright I figured I may as well update this.  I fell a little silly, but I do know at first the DVD was booting in UEFI mode, but apparently at some point that stopped, and that was what was causing all my issues.  I am now up and running and all good. Thanks for the help everyone!
I find it a very good idea to keep something as /boot/EFI/boot/bootx64.efi (or \EFI\BOOT\BOOTX64.efi relative to the root of the ESP).  That is the "default" efi application.  It is what is run if you have your machine set to boot in UEFI mode and you choose the disk to boot from (rather than a firmware entry like those created by efibootmgr).  It was put into the spec so that one could boot a removable medium, like a USB flash drive or cdrom, with UEFI. Obviously, a removable whatever is not going to have a firmware entry for it, so there needed to be some kind of standardization on how to make those work.  From there, apparently that idea carried over to the internal devices as well, and now a vast majority of UEFI firmwares use this for all disks, not just removable ones.
Nowadays, I keep gummiboot there.  But when I first started using UEFI, I kept the UEFI Shell v2 there since it that is probably the most versatile thing that could be used as a fallback.  But as long as you have somethign there, in the event that you lose all your firmware entries, this might save your ass.  In my Phoenix bios, the exit and save changes, you would use F10, while a total reset of the bios to defaults is F9... yeah, I reset my bios by accident once.  Having the UEFI Shell in that spot made my life quite a bit easier.

  • [SOLVED] GRUB Failing on Fresh Install

I'm trying to do a fresh install on a computer with an existing 20GB windows installation. I have done this for years with no problem, but now grub-mkconfig is returning errors (here's a photo - http://imgur.com/8Az66wx), and if I go ahead with grub-install afterwards, I find that there's no Windows boot option and trying to boot Linux also yields errors (see this photo - http://imgur.com/umfMznr). I've tried twice now with the same results. Any ideas what's going on? Thanks.
    Last edited by tony5429 (2013-12-14 00:41:59)

Actually I did search a bit and found a lot of discussion about the error in cases where people were trying to use an LVM, and situations which returned errors but still allowed them to boot. My case is a bit different as I'm just using standard hard drive partitions, and Linux is not booting.

  • Grub failing to read newest grub.conf [Solved]

I have been working on installing archlinux and xen to run a xenserver with archlinux as my dom0. The installation of the grub went fine. A potential problem was me trying to install grub to my boot partition the first time on accident. Following are the commands I used to install grub.
    # grub-install /dev/sda1
As you'd expect, I was informed that installing this way was a bad idea, and that the installation would not continue. I meant to use the following command instead:
    # grub-install /dev/sda
    Which completed successfully.
After that, I created the grub.conf
    # grub-mkconfig -o /boot/grub/grub.config
    Completed successfully.
The actual output of these commands are exactly what I would have expected from them. If desired, I can post the output, but they were what would be expected form a successfully completed command.
After running through the installation and creation of the grub.conf file, I rebooted and was presented with the grub menu selection screen. While the xen entry was certainly found and put in the grub.conf (which I checked afterwords), there were only two entries: Archlinux and Archlinux booting from the backup ramfs. Thinking that this may have been the correct behavior for a server that is running a baremetal hypervisor, I choose the normal Archlinux entry and was greeted with an error screen informing me that a UUID for a partition that does not exist was not able to be found. Trying the bakup archlinux entry gave me the same result.
I am now unable to boot the system. Rebooting into live media, remounting partitions, arch-chroot into the /mnt directory, and reinstalling grub and recreating the grub.conf file has gotten me nowhere.I have several questions about this:
Is it possible that the UUIDs and grub.conf from my previous install could have been preserved somehow? The previous install used gpt partitioning while this one used mbr.
Is there something that I am missing to get grub to create the file and use it?
Do special procedures have to be followed to clear gpt formatted disks before using mbr?

Having no luck, I looked into syslinux a bit and gave it a try, and am now booting just fine. This doesn't solve the initial issue of having grub consistently show the wrong UUID, but it is a workaround.
Thank you Head_On_A_Stick for the clarification.
EDIT: The information for setting up xen with syslinux was found here and here. I'd just like to remind anyone using syslinux for the first time that the default root partition is /dev/sda3 and has to be changed in the config file. Got me 5 times in a row!

    Hi again,
I would like to answer to another question, just in case:
Question: Can I dual boot Win7 and Linux on a UEFI capable bios?
Answer: Yes you can. If your HDD is formatted in MBR partition table (or msdos) than you can install first windows 7 and than the distro of your choice. BUT, careful, if you install windows from a DVD media it will convert your HDD in GPT partition table and dual boot will be almost impossible... (or will give you a lot of headache) to avoid this, dump the win7 iso to an usb using Windows 7 USB/DVD Download Tool. Installing from USB will not change the hdd in GPT partition table.
    take care

  • Cache Issue - Return message showing previous entry

    Hi,
While testing my function module I am directly assigning values to the fields. If I assign an invalid entry to one of the fields it throws an error message as expected. But the problem is even if I go back and correct the value and execute it again, it throws the same error message. I can understand that the cache is still holding the previous entry made by me. Please help me in solving this.
    Thanks in advance,
    Aravindan

    Hi,
It isnt related to any cache. You will have to clear and refresh the variables holding the error messages so that when you go back, they will be set to intial and get populated as per the newly entered values.
Just after the code for displaying the error message, clear those variables in the function module code

  • I/O errors on sda, grub fails

Receiving I/O error for sda. Grub is also failing. From previous Linux Mint console on sdb1, lsblk showed sda1 and sda2.  From new arch installation on sdb1, only sda.
    #parted /dev/sda
    gives
    Warning: Error fsyncing/closing /dev/sda: Input/output error
    #mklabel msdos
    gives
Error: Input/output error during read on /dev/sda
    in interactive mode.  Tried
    #dd if=/dev/null of=/dev/sda
    A blinking cursor ensued overnight.
    super-grub-disk told me to
    #sudo chroot "/mnt/boot-sav/sdb1" dpkg --configure -a
    #sudo chroot "/mnt/boot-sav/sdb1" pacman -R --noconfirm grub*-common
    with
chroot: failed to get attributes of ‘/mnt/boot-sav/sdb1’: No such file or directory
chroot: failed to get attributes of ‘/mnt/boot-sav/sdb1’: No such file or directory
respectively.  Could this be on account of an encypted home folder on the other drive, which no longer exists?  I had sybolically linked (lunk?) folders from the now scrambled hard drive to a now non-existent Linux Mint distro.

check your bios an c which HDD is on sdX or sdb etc an switch the boot priorities an that should fix your boot grub issue reason it does that is because the bios does not see anything linux related it see's only the dependent hardware that's it so check to see what ch ( channel ) your BIOS has your HDD set to if it's set for example sdX < grub loaded onto this harddrive ....an your bios reads
    -WD120gb channel 1
-WD500gb channel 2 etc etc an you install it to your 120GB HD then you actually need to move that down an make your channel 2 on top an channel 1 so in lamens terms CHANGE YOUR BOOT HARD DRIVE ORDER an as far as you (junk?) comment yeah it's fucked up because your moving non encrypted data onto encrypted you can't go vice versa or else things get torn apart in the hardware / firmware line of file structure due to encryption hope this helps

Hi I'm running Addressbook and cannot clear previous entry easily when searching my data base of around 5,000 contacts.
I prefer to view in All contacts on a double page spread with details on the right page.  Searching doesn't seem to work correctly in this view.
It's always the second search that is problematic.
I've tried typing over and all it seems to do is confine the search to the the entries that have come up for the previous search.
I've tried to use the x to clear the previous entry and then type the next search, same problem.  The only way seems to be to move from "All Contacts" to "Groups".  Then the searched name appears and I can return to All Contacts to see full details.
Surely three key press' are not the way it's supposed to work?

    Many thanks.

Boot your CD 1 of 2 into single user (b -s) and fsck /dev/rdsk/c0d0s0. Your root filesystem need's to be fsck'ed and you can't ( or you never should) fsck a mounted filesystem. Root is currently mounted write only.
At the "list of available boot devices" select the CDROM as the device from which to boot a Solaris kernel. At the screen where you are prompted to select 1, 2, or 3 for what type of install type you wish to do enter 'b -s' instead of a number.

  • How do I get pages to show previous entries in a pages table in the new version?
