[Solved] Hebrew File Names

I have Hebrew installed I think:
[kirk@arch ~]$ locale

LC_CTYPE="C"
LC_NUMERIC="C"
LC_TIME="C"
LC_COLLATE="C"
LC_MONETARY="C"
LC_MESSAGES="C"
LC_PAPER="C"
LC_NAME="C"
LC_ADDRESS="C"
LC_TELEPHONE="C"
LC_MEASUREMENT="C"
LC_IDENTIFICATION="C"
LC_ALL=
[kirk@arch ~]$ locale -a
C
POSIX
en_US
en_US.iso88591
en_US.utf8
he_IL
he_IL.iso88598
he_IL.utf8
hebrew
[kirk@arch ~]$ more /etc/fstab
# /etc/fstab: static file system information
# <file system> <dir> <type> <options> <dump> <pass>
tmpfs /tmp tmpfs nodev,nosuid 0 0
# UUID=92d68525-22b2-4619-a35a-0ba35df05b89
/dev/sda2 / ext4 rw,relatime,data=ordered 0 1
# UUID=fb6f5666-6075-4cfc-9105-30052be224e3

# UUID=fcb00885-7ad0-46c0-8d68-40cde74e1a1a
/dev/sda5 /srv ext4 rw,relatime,data=ordered 0 2
# UUID=35b3b21c-82f5-4db6-8406-8bd19c9d4aeb
/dev/sda3 /home ext4 rw,relatime,data=ordered 0 2
and setxkbmap il works to set Hebrew for my applications (I have the culmus package installed which provides Hebrew fonts), but not for my terminal and I can't save filenames in Hebrew.
What am I doing wrong? Do I need to put Hebrew fonts into my Console fonts directory?

If you use systemd you should use its config files: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Sy … figuration
The locale output you posted is not related to your question. I have Hebrew enabled and typing locale here outputs:
% locale
LANG=en_US.UTF-8
LC_CTYPE="en_US.UTF-8"
LC_NUMERIC="en_US.UTF-8"
LC_TIME="en_US.UTF-8"
LC_COLLATE="en_US.UTF-8"
LC_MONETARY="en_US.UTF-8"
LC_MESSAGES="en_US.UTF-8"
LC_PAPER="en_US.UTF-8"
LC_NAME="en_US.UTF-8"
LC_ADDRESS="en_US.UTF-8"
LC_TELEPHONE="en_US.UTF-8"
LC_MEASUREMENT="en_US.UTF-8"
LC_IDENTIFICATION="en_US.UTF-8"
LC_ALL=
The locale -a output is similar to yours.
If you changed your locale configurations before the last kernel update you may need to "mkinitcpio" manually. Not sure.
Edit: Hebrew file names work fine.

  • Messed up locale- trying to display Hebrew file names +English int

    Hi,
    This morning I did a fresh installation of Arch-X86_64/KDE 4.8.
    Being in Israel, I'd like to display (some) Hebrew file names in Hebrew characters (but keep the user interface in US English!), both in KDE and in the terminal.
    I couldn't achieve this, and probably messed up my locale:
    My current locale commands yields:
    LANG=
    LC_CTYPE="POSIX"
    LC_NUMERIC="POSIX"
    LC_TIME="POSIX"
    LC_COLLATE="POSIX"
    LC_MONETARY="POSIX"
    LC_MESSAGES="POSIX"
    LC_PAPER="POSIX"
    LC_NAME="POSIX"
    LC_ADDRESS="POSIX"
    LC_TELEPHONE="POSIX"
    LC_MEASUREMENT="POSIX"
    LC_IDENTIFICATION="POSIX"
    LC_ALL=
    My fstab is configured as follows (the Hebrew files are in my /home):
    UUID=9d6eb8a2-be83-477b-976e-e6d1ad560f8d /home ext4 defaults 0 1
    Please advise, including how do I modify my locale.
    Thanks!

    Have you already tried to generate and set the locales as described in this wiki article?

  • [SOLVED] Find and replace quotes with underscores in file names

    I was looking to replace all of the quotes in file names in a directory with underscores.  I seem to be having a problem doing so, though.  Running the find command:
    find . -name '*[\`\'\"]*' -exec sh -c "mv -i '$0' '${0//[\`\'\"]/_}'" {} \;
    I get a > inviting me to continue the command.  What am I doing wrong?

    @lolilolicon: yeah the -exec part does give another level of quotes, so you can run into trouble with scripts inside -exec.
    I didn't know you could give {} as an argument after sh -c and $0, that solves the problem of not knowing which quotes to use around it in the -exec part.
    $ find -mindepth 1 -exec sh -c 'mv -v --backup=t "$0" "$(echo "$0" | sed s/[\\x27\"\`]/___/g)"' {} \;
    mv: `./a b' and `./a b' are the same file
    `./\'' -> `./___'
    `./\'"\'' -> `./_________'
    mv: `./$0' and `./$0' are the same file
    mv: `./a' and `./a' are the same file
    mv: `./$(echo crash)' and `./$(echo crash)' are the same file
    `./"' -> `./___' (backup: `./___.~1~')
    `./\'\'\'' -> `./_________' (backup: `./_________.~1~')
    Or with the other substitution method, it doesn't interpret \x27 (you could use $(echo -e \\x27) or you have to use ...'\\\''...
    $ find -mindepth 1 -exec sh -c 'echo mv -v --backup=t "$0" "${0//['\\\''\"\`]/___}"' {} \;
    $ find -mindepth 1 -exec sh -c 'echo mv -v --backup=t "$0" "${0//[$(echo -e \\x27)\"\`]/___}"' {} \;
    mv -v --backup=t ./a b ./a b
    mv -v --backup=t ./' ./___

    mv -v --backup=t ./'"' ./_________

    Hello WGT52,
    It sounds like this error message is preventing you from syncing your content to the iPod. I would recommend the troubleshooting steps in the following article:

  • [SOLVED] File name encoding issue

    Hi all,
    I have a large series of files with accented characters, they were all displayed nicely, but at some point, when I copied them to another computer, the characters were replaced by codes, for instance: "ó" --> "ó".
    +Renaming ie. "Pasó" (bad encoding of "Pasó") --> Pasó, while writing it, it shows the correct character, but when pressing enter the name remains ("Pasó")
    +If I rename the file to something else and then to the correct name, it will accept it: Pasó --> Pas --> Pasó will display correctly.
    I don't know if it's a system wide encoding issue because new files are displayed correctly, but I would like to know if I have to change file names manually to make them right.
    PS. When copying bad encoded files to another FS (like a USB drive), nautilus and bash refuse to copy them.

  • [solved]remove backslashes from file names?

    Hi!
    I have a lot of files that contain backslashes in file name, spread over many many folders.
    How do I remove that character from all file names? The approaches / scripts / programs I usually work with can't handle the invalid file names (e.g. loose the '\' and then 'cant stat()' -.-").
    Thanks!
    edit: Argh... now I've got copies of half of the files without the "\" in the same folders, because copying did work on most but deleting only on some... also multiple \\\ because I messed up one sed line. and "echo" failed to warn me about the result, just dropping a few \ while mv didn't... or something. So confused.

    Don't know what exactly I've been doing wrong, but it seems not to happen any more since I try to do stuff with "while, read, ${}"  instead of "for, $(), echo, sed"
    pulce wrote:Not sure that's the point, but backslash is an escape
    Yes, I know, that was the problem. That's why those stupid things always keep either disappearing or multiplying - I guess I just suck at keeping track of what program handles them which way and depending on what.

  • Excel 2010 missing default suggested file name in Save As dialog box

    I’m using Excel 2010 running on Windows 7 (32 bit).  When I open a certain file which produces the following message: "A file is in a different file format than its extension indicates", and then go to “Save As” (or “Save”) the
    file, the default suggested file name is missing (blank).  This didn't occur in previous versions of Excel.
    In previous versions, Excel would automatically populate the original file name in to the File Name field.
      I have searched all over the net, looking for a way to change Excel so that it will once again populate the file name in this situation.
    To reproduce:
    Create a new blank workbook
    save as type “Web Page”, (i.e. File name:  “Blank Example.html”)
    Close workbook
    In windows, rename file from .html to .xls  (i.e. rename “Blank Example.html” to “Blank Example.xls”)
    In Excel open renamed file (i.e. “Blank Example.xls”) and click “Yes” when prompted with the “A file is in a different file format than its extension indicates” message.
    Do a “Save As” and you will notice that the File Name is blank. In previous versions, this field would contain the current workbook file name
     (i.e. “Blank Example.xls”)
    Any help will be greatly appreciated.

    Hi Jaynet,
    In order to re-produce this, you need to answer "yes" to the rename file prompt and then continue with step 5 (above).
    The reason for this is not an exercise in futility - I assure you.  At my work and elsewhere, when web developers have created features to permit the end user to save web data in Excel format, often times the Excel files are saved locally in Excel's
    html format (but with the .xls
    extension).
    (I actually prefer the .xls
    extension, because it is easier to just double-click the file to open in Excel, rather than to select the open-with and then select Excel. a file with the .html extension will default open in your default browser. Now, I could change my default program
    for the .html extension, but that would only solve a part of the problem and would not really address the bigger issue and that being that Microsoft changed a behavior in Excel and may not even be aware that it was a much used feature. )
    To continue, when I go to open the resulting Excel file, I am prompted with the message that the file type does not match the extension (which is fine and not bothersome to me).  It's at this point when I go to save the file that I get really annoyed.
    In previous versions of Excel, the default file name would be pre-filled with the current name of the file and the default file type would state that it is a Web html file.  I would just change the file type to Excel Workbook and hit enter to save.
    I would be prompted with "Are you sure you want to overwrite your existing file?" message and I would click "yes" and that would be that.
    However, in Excel 2010, because the default file name is blank, I then need to re-type the name into the field to save the file.
    Any help is greatly appreciated.
    Thanks

  • Dynamic file name of the attachment in sender mail adapter

    Hi
    I have configured a sender mail adapter which receives some attachments.
    Right now the file name of the attachment is hardcoded to "MailAttachment-1" "MailAttachment-2" using the content-description from "AF_Modules/PayloadSwapBean" module.
    I want to set it to dynamic ie. instead of "MailAttachment-1"... i want it with real name of the attach.
    please suggest a solution w/o the need to develop a custom adapter module.
    Thanks!
    Regards,
    Mariano.

    Thanks Prateek,
    Now, i can see that the name of the original file is into the content type named as  text/xml; name"name of the file.xml" when i send the email from outlook.
    If i send it from hotmail, this is not happend.
    Do you know why happend this?
    If i always would have the original name inside the content type, my problem will be solved.

  • Non-english caracters in file names

    Hi,
    I use archlinux, KDE, Dolphin.
    I have a problem with file names with the norwegian caracters ø æ å in some file names. I get the message that "the file does not exist". I can change the file name in the terminal, but it's a lot of work. In Dolphin the place of this letters there are a question sign. In the terminal there are different signs and a number.
    Can anybody tell me what causes the problem and a way to solve it.

    harida wrote:What I meant was, can it have something to do with the fact that I have downloaded these files from a torrent site,
    and that they have been stored on ntfs by the user sharing them?
    I don't know, but I just experienced something similar.
    I used cpio to pass files from a Bluewhite64 JFS /home partition to my new Maxtor Basics 1TB external USB disk, which I had reformatted from NTFS to JFS. SOME file and directory names containing the letter 'ø' or 'Ø' are visible in file managers and in a console, yet when I try to open them the system claims they don't exist. I can NOT open them from the command line either. The names appear garbled under Bluewhite64 as well, but there I can open them without problems. I had always thought I would get safe copies with cpio...
    I have LOCALE="nb_NO.utf8" in /etc/rc.conf, and
    nb_NO.UTF-8 UTF-8
    nb_NO ISO-8859-1
    activated in /etc/locale.gen
    Interestingly, with the keyboard mapped to 'no.latin1', the letter 'ø' appears as a 'funny' character on the console under runlevel 3. When I try the other choice for Norwegian, 'no.map.gz', I get a dvorak keyboard instead of qwerty. You can never win.
    The problematic files in question, i.e. of the ones I copied, are old and have passed through various OS's. That may be part of of the problem, but it does not explain the Norwegian keyboard anomalies in Arch, or the fact that the files are loadable and readable under Bluewhite64.

    Hello,
    As I said earlier, properly formatted for Mac.

    This HD is formatted for MAC factory, but I even did a few times in my attempts I can say that this is entirely correct formattingwith it - Mac OS Extended (Journaled)

  • Problems copying iTunes folder to an external hard drive - "The operation can't be completed because the item FILE NAME is in use"

    Hi,
    I have been trying to back up my iTunes folder from my MacBook hard drive over to a new LaCie external hard drive.  However, whenever I try to do it at some point during the copying I keep getting the warning "The operation can’t be completed because the item FILE NAME is in use".  Each time I have tried it, it is always a different file name that comes up and at different points of the copying.  Following the warning, the copying stops and cannot be restarted.
    I tried copying the iTunes folder to another Lacie external hard drive that I have, and it worked fine so I am guessing that it maybe something wrong with the hard drive.
    I've been trying various approaches all day and can't seem to get anywhere with it - all very frustrating, so any help would be much appreciated!
    Thanks.

    If you don't have other backup data on it, reformatting external drive could solve the problem.
