[SOLVED] how do hosts.allow and hosts.deny work?

I understand the basic concepts of hosts.allow and hosts.deny, but I am interested in how it works.  What actually blocks access to the services?  Do they do it themselves?  Or it is something in the kernel that does it?
For example, if I have this in my hosts.allow:
sshd:all
#mysqld: all
And this is my hosts.deny:
ALL: ALL: DENY
This will result in people being able to connect to sshd but not mysqld.  Are sshd and mysqld programmed to read these hosts.allow and hosts.deny files?  Or is there something stopping the connection before it even gets to the daemon?
The hosts.allow and hosts.deny man pages refer to tcpd, but it is not running on my system.  Also, hosts.allow and hosts.deny never show up in the output of `lsof`.  hosts.allow and hosts.deny belong to the tcp_wrappers package, but there is nothing else in the package that illuminates my question.

Thanks guys.
However most common network service daemons today can be linked against libwrap directly.
Sure enough,
$ ldd /usr/sbin/sshd
    linux-vdso.so.1 =>  (0x00007123451ff000)
    libwrap.so.0 => /usr/lib/libwrap.so.0 (0x00007fffbd6d000)
    libpam.so.0 => /lib/libpam.so.0 (0x00007f99765f1000)
$
Here is also a little bit more information about libwrap:

  • [SOLVED] How to configure prosody and jitsi to work together?

    Hi,
I want to use prosody to connect several jitsi accounts on different computers on a LAN. I have followed the Prosody page in our wiki to set up Prosody and some user accounts. The service starts and ss -tul indicates that it is listening on the expected ports. I have created the missing key and certificate files expected by the default setup and placed them in /etc/prosody/certs.
I have created the account foo@localhost using prosodyctl adduser foo@localhost.
In jitsi I have created an XMPP account (foo@localhost) on the same host as prosody. The account appears but it fails to connect to the server. Jitsi displays error messages on the console which indicates that the server does not support TLS connections even though these are enabled in the prosody configuration file (and lua51-sec is installed).
I have tried numerous variations of disabling encryption in both prosody and jitsi but I either get the same error message or jitsi simply hangs while trying to connect to the server.
So far the only thing that I've been able to find that deals specifically with prosody and jitsi is an episode of the Linux Action Show from last year that skimps on the details of the setup. The various online documentation that I've found seems to be for an older version or Prosody (e.g. Host entries in the configuration file).
Does anyone have a similar setup working with the latest versions of Prosody and Jitsi? If so, please share your configurations.
    edit
I went through the Prosody wiki page again today and managed to get it working. I think my problem was in misconfigured paths for the SSL server certificates in the VirtualHost section.

  • [SOLVED] Can't get ccache and colorgcc to work together

    Hi all,
Has anyone figured out how to get ccache and colorgcc to work at the same time?  I can only get one or the other, but not both.
If I put them both in the path, with colorgcc first, then "g++" invokes colorgcc, which then calls /usr/bin/g++, skipping ccache.
If I put ccache first in the path instead, then running "g++" invokes ccache, which then calls /usr/bin/g++, skipping colorgcc for some reason.
Putting colorgcc back to first in the path, then editing /etc/colorgcc/colorgccrc means I can set the compiler paths to point to ccache.  However then running "g++" invokes colorgcc, which calls ccache, but then ccache seems to call colorgcc again, which calls ccache, which calls colorgcc, etc, etc.
Perhaps I'm missing something, but I can't see how you tell ccache where the compiler binaries are located, as this seems to be the problem - ccache autodetects them, and always seems to pick the ones I don't want!
    Any suggestions?
Last edited by Malvineous (2011-05-03 01:29:48)

Ha, ok, as usual as soon as I post in a forum I stumble across the answer.  Turns out there's a CCACHE_PATH environment variable you can use to tell ccache where to look for the real compilers.  It doesn't seem to work setting this to point to colorgcc, but putting only colorgcc in the path, editing /etc/colorgcc/colorgcc to point to ccache, then setting CCACHE_PATH=/usr/bin seems to do the trick...
But if there's a better way please let me know!

  • How do the itl and xml files work

Due to some problems I have been having (now solved) I have been trying to get to grips with how these 2 files work.
I now have a library of 37000 some songs in q:\itunes\itunes music and everything is working fine.
However when I look in the xml file some song pointers are still to my documents\my music\itunes yet itunes still finds them. How?
Does itunes look for the location set in edit>preferences>advanced>itunes music folder location first and then check the xml file address if it cannot find them there?
Also if the songs are in the correct location anyway why is the xml file pointer looking at my documents.
Does anyone know if this is abnormal? Can anyone explain the logic to me please 'cos to me it ain't logical!!
    Regards,
    Andy.

I think iTunes must have got in a muddle as a result of the way you transfered your files to the external drive.
It is important to realise that the iTunes Music folder location as designated in your preferences tells iTunes where to add music in the future. It is quite possible to get in a situation where iTunes looks there for newly added music, but continues to look in the old location for previously added files.
If the xml file tells you it is accessing files in iTunes iTunes Music on your c: drive, then that is it is telling the truth. However these files are not longer in THE itunes Muisc folder , that is to say the one set in your preferences. All very confusing I am afraid.
If your file locations get corrected when you play a track, there is something you could try.
First close iTunes and make a copy of your xml and itl files in case you don't like what happens.
Now open iTunes and go to you music view and select your entire library with select all.
Right click in the selection and choose Get Info. Say yes to multimle edits.
When you see the multipe edit Get Into screen, simply exit with OK, do nothing else. This will force iTunes to reread all your tags which may take a while if your library is large. If I geussed right, it will also update the file locations. Although I have used multiple get into in this way to correct tag into I haven't tried it to correct paths so this is just a guess - it could only possibly work for files that are in the designated iTunes Music folder in the proper place, but iTunes is still pointing to an old loaction where the files no longer exist.

  • Solved - How to take ownership and change permissions for blocked files and folders in Powershell

    Hello,
I was trying to take ownership & fix permissions on Home Folder/My Documents structures, I ran into the common problem in PowerShell where Set-Acl & Get-Acl return access denied errors. The error occurs because the Administrators have been removed from
file permissions and do not have ownership of the files,folders/directories. (Assuming all other permissions like SeTakeOwnershipPrivilege have been enabled.
I was not able to find any information about someone successfully using native PS to resolve the issue.  As I was able to solve the issues surrounding Get-Acl & Set-Acl, I wanted to share the result for those still looking for an answer.
Question: How do you use only Powershell take ownership and reset permissions for files or folders you do not have permissions or ownership of?
    Problem:
Using the default function calls to the object fail for a folder that the administrative account does not have permissions or file ownership. You get the following error for Get-Acl:
    PS C:\> Get-Acl -path F:\testpath\locked
Get-Acl : Attempted to perform an unauthorized operation.
    + get-acl <<<< -path F:\testpath\locked
    + CategoryInfo : NotSpecified: (:) [Get-Acl], UnauthorizedAccessException
    + FullyQualifiedErrorId : System.UnauthorizedAccessException,Microsoft.PowerShell.Commands.GetAclCommand
If you create a new ACL and attempt to apply it using Set-Acl, you get:
    PS C:\> Set-Acl -path F:\testpath\locked -AclObject $DirAcl
Set-Acl : Attempted to perform an unauthorized operation.
    At line:1 char:8
    + Set-Acl <<<< -path "F:\testpath\locked" -AclObject $DirAcl
    + CategoryInfo : PermissionDenied: (F:\testpath\locked:String) [Set-Acl], UnauthorizedAccessException
    + FullyQualifiedErrorId : System.UnauthorizedAccessException,Microsoft.PowerShell.Commands.SetAclCommand
Use of other functions like .GetAccessControl will result in a similar error: "Attempted to perform an unauthorized operation."
How do you replace owner on all subcontainers and objects in Powershell with resorting to external applications like takeown, icacls, Windows Explorer GUI, etc.?
    Tony

    Hello,
Last, here is the script I used to reset permissions on the "My Documents" tree structure that admins did not have access to:
Example:  Powershell script to parse a directory of User-owned "My Document" redirection folders and reset permissions.

Final Thought: There are great non-PS tools like
Set-Acl and takeown which are external to PS & can also do the job wonderfully.  It may be much simpler to call those tools than recreate the wheel in pure
code.  Feel free to use whatever best suits your time, scope & cost.

  • [SOLVED] How to get sudo and kdesu to honor my user password?

    Hi folks,
Well, I must be missing something. I think I've tried everything listed here https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=143487 and in the referenced links, but I still have the problem of my system rejecting my password for some uses of sudo and kdesu but not others.  I've included my /etc/sudoers file below.
My problem may be due to screwing around with users:  I started out using bruce (1000), then switched to bbraley (1001), then deleted bruce in kusers, then changed bbraley to 1000. When that created more problems without solving the original one, I switched back to 1001.  I've played with adding and removing my user from groups, including creating a sudo group, making sure I am a member of wheel group, etc.
What seemed to be everyone's magic fix,
    pacman -S pambase
didn't work when I tried it successfully with my bbraley password, then later, when that began failing, using the root password. pambase reinstalls, but there is no resulting change in the behavior of sudo.
Side question: Most of my experience is with kubuntu in which I never created a root user and never had any trouble having my user password work with sudo or kdesu. Is there a reason Archwiki beginners guide suggests assigning a separate root account and password?

I had never used it, either, but I misread some reference and thought it might help. Since you say it causes the behaviour I'm trying to eliminate, I will get rid of it, as suggested. However, the behavior preceded my addition of this line in the file, so I don't think this will correct the problem. Edit: Removing it kept the root password from being universally required (I can now edit /etc/sudoers using my user password) and returned it to requiring it sometimes (I still need the root password to use kdesu).
As for some other distro not having a root account, that is simply impossible.  There was a root account.  If you didn't have the password for it, then that installation was severely crippled.
Sorry, you're right. I should have said that kubuntu does not expect users to assign a password to the root account and instead expects primary users to access that account's privileges via su, sudo, or kdesu only.
    https://help.ubuntu.com/community/RootSudo
By default, the root account password is locked in Ubuntu. This means that you cannot login as root directly or use the su command to become the root user. However, since the root account physically exists it is still possible to run programs with root-level privileges. This is where sudo comes in - it allows authorized users (normally "Administrative" users; for further information please refer to AddUsersHowto) to run certain programs as root without having to know the root password.
Thanks for responding to my request for help. Any other ideas?
Edit:  Here's what I keep getting that only accepts the root password, not my user password

  • [SOLVED] How to set DEVPATH and DEVNAME for Fancontrol?

    Hello
Ok, no one answered, my question was a bit unclear - so I rewrote it
I am setting up fancontrol according to https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/fan_speed_control, but I do not understand the last part about setting the DEVPATH and DEVNAME:
"There are also two settings fancontrol needs to verify the configuration file is still up to date. The lines start with the setting name and a equality sign, followed by groups of hwmon-class-device=setting, seperated by spaces. You need to specify each setting for each hwmon class device you use anywhere in the config, or fancontrol will not work. "
As suggested - when I run:
    readlink -f /sys/class/hwmon/hwmon-device/device | sed -e 's/^\/sys\///'
    I get no output
As suggested - When I run
    sed -e 's/[[:space:]=]/_/g' /sys/class/hwmon/hwmon-device/device/name
    I get
sed: can't read /sys/class/hwmon/hwmon-device/device/name: No such file or directory
I do not undestand what the two commands from the wiki do - what do they do and how can I set it right?
Any questions or info you need, just ask pls.
    Regards
    Martin

    Hello,
    First command
So what does the wiki meen by: "DEVPATH sets the physical device. You can determine this by executing the command
    readlink -f /sys/class/hwmon/hwmon-device/device | sed -e 's/^\/sys\///'"
Physical device of what, and what output am I suppose to get: Nothing, a list with output on where the symlinks lead, something else... In my case I got no output, if that is right, I do not know - since I do not understand what the command do.
    Seccond comand
DEVNAME: Sets the name of the device. Try:
    sed -e 's/[[:space:]=]/_/g' /sys/class/hwmon/hwmon-device/device/name
Does it meen like this - If I during my pwmconfig used hwmon1 wich was coretemp, and hwmon2 wich was nct6775, I should do:
    sed -e 's/[[:space:]=]/_/g' /sys/class/hwmon/hwmon1-device/device/name coretemp
    sed -e 's/[[:space:]=]/_/g' /sys/class/hwmon/hwmon2-device/device/name nct6775
And that will direct every occurrence of hwmon1 and hwmon2 to the correct sensor chip?
    Regards

  • [Solved] How to specify -source and -target=1.5 in Compiler settings

    Hi forum
I'm looking for a way to get my generics-based code to compile in JDeveloper 10.1.3.1. As you know, generics require "-source=1.5" and "-target=1.5", but I have not been able to get JDeveloper to compile with this setting. I am using javac as compiler and has checked "Use javac", but if I specify "Default" in the "Source" option, JDeveloper compiles with "-source=1.3" and "-target=1.2", and there's only 1.2, 1.3 and 1.4 in the list to choose from apart from "Default", not 1.5 for some reason.
Changing Compiler settings under "Default project settings" doesn't seem to do anything, it stills compiles for 1.3 when choosing Default - which of course means, that my generics won't compile, as it complains about wrong -source setting.
Can someone help me out here? I've done a search here on the board without finding the answer.
    Thanks,
    Jacob

    My about-box reads:
    "Studio Edition Version 10.1.3.1.0.3984"
"Build JDEVADF_10.1.3.1.0_NT_061009.1404.3984" (arrgh, please make an option to copy/paste this...)
Have you accidentally switched 2 ciphers, Frank? By the way, I found the reason for this - I had set the "J2SE version" under "Libraries" to "1.4.2_06" earlier to make sure about 1.4.2 compatibility - but since we soon don't need this any longer, I'm switching this value to 1.5.0 to be able to fully utilize 1.5 options in my code.
So... I guess we can say, that this was my own fault.
    Thanks,
    Jacob

  • How to activate subversion and have svnX working on 10.5.1

    Hello,
First of let me say that I am not a programmer, I do localization works, the developer with whom I collaborate, uses subversion and I manage access and files update transfer with svnX.
From Tigers I upgrade to 10.5.1 .. I have installed Xcode 2.5 How to I install Subversion and have snvX see it, so that it works as it was working under 10.4.11 ?
Do I need to install XCode 3.
    Many thanks for your help.
    Sergio

Well I have finally solved the problem, I have install XCode 3, I have than re-install svnX from zero again and insert all the required data such as: Subversion server name, id, password.... and it has started nicely.
I can non keep all my Repository and Working copies fully synchronized.
I have to keep also XCode 2.5 because of iLocalize 3.7, otherwise it will generate Leopard only localization files, but this is a different issue.
    Thanks & Ciao

  • How to get local and global hostnames working?

I have a new AirPort TimeCapsule, and I can't get the local hostname (appleair.local) to work from browsers on the local network. Is that how it's supposed to work?
The TC is in bridge mode because it's behind a Netgear WAP+router -- maybe that is a problem?
I had to set up a global hostname to get Bonjour working in order to share an old printer (attached to the TC) across the network, but my understanding is that I can't actually use a global hostname from a browser without setting up a dynamic DNS service. Is that right? I'd like to be able to share files and the printer on the TC without using Bonjour if possible.
Apart from the USB printer attached to the TC, there's an external flash drive attached to the Netgear router used for backups and as a media server.
I originally configured the TC with my iPhone and an iPad mini, but now I'm working on the advanced settings with a Windows laptop using the Apple AirPort Utility for Windows and connecting to the TC wirelessly. There's a MacBook and iMac that will be added to the network, but they're not available yet so that's why I'm using the PC.

The 5.6.1 utility for windows is really not up to handling the new AC version TC.. Apple specify that you must use a version 6 airport utility but none has been released for windows.
You will have to use bonjour for windows. but you should not need to use full domain name..
By default the TC is local domain. But if your computer is getting an IP from the Netgear it might be in a different domain. How much this matters I am not sure. But I would simply try to get everything on the one domain. I think you are confused anyway.
I have a new AirPort TimeCapsule, and I can't get the local hostname (appleair.local) to work from browsers on the local network. Is that how it's supposed to work?
The TC has no html access.. never has had.. probably never will have.. for reasons known only the higher powers of Apple inc.. they do not use standard HTML access.. the only way to access the TC is via airport utility. So putting the ip or the name in a browser is useless.. it will not and cannot respond.
Sharing printers from the TC to windows is always going to be a mystery bag.. I would suggest you simply delete all your previous attempts and try again.. setting up printers via bonjour in windows.. shudder..

  • How do ABAP Proxy and XI adapter work?

    Hi everybody,
I have a general question about the ABAP proxy and XI adapter.
In order to use the ABAP proxy and XI adapter, I must configure the HTTP Destination between the R/3 system and the XI server. I must also maintain the SLD.
After several hours configurations with our administrator, it failed. At least the HTTP Destinations on both servers don't work correctly. We got always HTTP error message. But a scenario with an ABAP Receiver proxy works! It is really strange and laughable. We're very happy about that but don't know why and what happened. Today we tested the ABAP Sender proxy, it doesn't work.
So we decide to ask the XI experts in this forum to give us a general lessen about the ABAP proxy: how it works, why we should create the HTTP destinations, how do the destinations work and so on.
    Thanks a lot in advance!
    With best regards
    Xiang

    Hi
Once you create the interface in XI, you generate the proxies on your R3 system.
    Client Proxies -->
This is done for outbound interfaces. You generate the proxy and then write a report that fills in the proxy class with the data and pushes it to XI.
    Server proxies -->
Generated for inbound interfaces. Generate the proxy and write the implementation for the exectue method that deals with the data sent from XI to the R3 system

why we should create the HTTP destinations, how do the destinations work and so on.
we create http destiantio because in proxies , adapter is not use so who is goin to send the message to integration server ...by creating http destinatio we create integration engine which send messg to IS . then messg is routed .and all
error in HTTP to file scenario http to file
