[Solved]how to revert last upgrade

Newbie, here. With the last upgrade I lost my wireless connection, I am using an AUR package for my RTL8191SE and it is not updated yet. Until then I want to revert my upgrade. My cache still has the old packages, so if I could only know which packages were updated. I couldn't find anything in wiki, so any help is highly appreciated.

  • [solved] How to revert Automatic login to virtual console?

Long, long time ago (maybe 3 years back), I set up automatic login for my user. Now, I am trying to revert it so that the console asks me for username (unless it is avoidable) and password upon login.
So I though "Easy! I'll just go here https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/au … al_console and delete the file mentioned there:
    /etc/systemd/system/[email protected]/autologin.conf
But the file is not present on my system. Instead, I have this:
    /etc/systemd/system/getty.target.wants/getty\@tty1.service
    # This file is part of systemd.

Perhaps "grep autologin -R /etc /usr/lib" would point you to something.
    -edit-
Maybe grep for "getty", as apparently "-a" is equivalent to "--autologin".
    -edit-
Okay. Remove "-a" in the file you pasted.
    -edit-
You could also remove the symlink and the file it points to and create there a symlink to the file coming with systemd, as your file differs somewhat from what I have.
    ls -l /etc/systemd/system/getty.target.wants/[email protected]
    lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 38 Jun 21 2012 /etc/systemd/system/getty.target.wants/[email protected] -> /usr/lib/systemd/system/[email protected]

  • After the last upgrade of OS X Mountain Lion I can't seem to adjust screen brightness anymore. Why and how do I solve this?

My screen brightness used to adjust itself and if not I could use f1 and f2 keys. After my last upgrade of OSX Mountain Lion, these do not seem to work. Does somebody know what happened and how I can return to the original situation?

    Back up all data.
This procedure will unlock all your user files (not system files) and reset their ownership and access-control lists to the default. If you've set special values for those attributes on any of your files, they will be reverted. In that case, either stop here, or be prepared to recreate the settings if necessary. Do so only after verifying that those settings didn't cause the problem. If none of this is meaningful to you, you don't need to worry about it.
    Step 1
If you have more than one user account, and the one in question is not an administrator account, then temporarily promote it to administrator status in the Users & Groups preference pane. To do that, unlock the preference pane using the credentials of an administrator, check the box marked Allow user to administer this computer, then reboot. You can demote the problem account back to standard status when this step has been completed.
Triple-click the following line to select it. Copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C):
    { sudo chflags -R nouchg,nouappnd ~ $TMPDIR.. ; sudo chown -Rh $UID:staff ~ $_ ; sudo chmod -R u+rwX ~ $_ ; chmod -R -N ~ $_ ; } 2> /dev/null
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window (command-V). You'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. You may get a one-time warning not to screw up. If you don’t have a login password, you’ll need to set one before you can run the command. If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator.
The command will take a noticeable amount of time to run. Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign (“$”) to appear, then quit Terminal.
    Step 2 (optional)
The first step should give you usable permissions in your home folder. This step will restore special attributes set by OS X on some user folders to protect them from unintended deletion or renaming. You can skip this step if you don't consider that protection to be necessary.
Boot into Recovery by holding down the key combination command-R at startup. Release the keys when you see a gray screen with a spinning dial.
When the OS X Utilities screen appears, select
    Utilities ▹ Terminal
from the menu bar. A Terminal window will open.
In the Terminal window, type this:
    resetpassword
That's one word, all lower case, with no spaces. Then press return. A Reset Password window will open. You’re not  going to reset a password.
Select your boot volume ("Macintosh HD," unless you gave it a different name) if not already selected.
Select your username from the menu labeled Select the user account if not already selected.
Under Reset Home Directory Permissions and ACLs, click the Reset button.
    Select
     ▹ Restart
    from the menu bar.

I think the spacing now is correct, while before it was wrong. The only "problem" is that you got used to a bad font rendering, and now that it has changed for better you feel like it's different and don't like it.
Really, *most* of the problems that people find in Linux's fonts are just because they are used to the awful default fonts from Windows XP. Yes, people can even get used to those fonts and believe they're good!!! And when they see correct fonts in Linux they think they're bad...
What I would do is remove the MS TTF fonts. They work bad in Windows and worse in Linux. You should use Bitstream Vera or DejaVu if you want good quality fonts (especially in web pages).
But, then again, you might think that they look wrong just because you're not used to it... Oh, well...
What does correct font / correct spacing mean ?
IMO, that doesn't make any sense, because that's a totally subjective matter, like many other things in this world.
BTW, I love how fonts look in Windows, and I think that must be the only thing MS got right. Thus, I'm using ms fonts in linux, and a rendering as close as possible (no autohinting or antialiasing or subpixel rendering).
Similarly, I could find a woman beautiful that you would find ugly or just average. We are all different, and it's better that way

  • Displaying bash-3.2$ in terminal [NOT-SOLVED after last upgrade]

hello, I have this same problem: http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=39192 but the "solution" posted there does not help me at all, I wish I could reuse the old thread but the 'SOLVED' keyword in the title may be confusing so I'm starting a new one.
the problem is that the prompt of my terminals (konsole, yakuake, xterm) is PS1='\s-\v\$ ' in all users; this started to happen after the last upgrade when the profile mechanism was changed somehow, I have no PS1 in my .bashrc and the PS1 in profile.bash is PS1='[\u@\h:\w]\n\$ '.
an interesting thing to know is that the virtual consoles (the ones accessed with Ctrl+Alt+F[1-6]) have the right prompt, and sourcing /etc/profile also fixes the problem on the others so I'm guessing that some other configuration file (possibly KDE or X related) is overwriting my prompt but I can't find it! fgrep -R 'PS1' /etc/profile* only shows the one I set not the wrong one.
/etc/profile and /etc/profile.bash are being loaded since the other declarations are present as well when running `set` only PS1 has changed it's value.
    any help is appreciated.

If you still have access to your old email address, go to https//appleid.apple.com, click Manage my Apple ID and sign in with your iCloud ID.  Tap edit next to the primary email account, tap Edit, change it back to your old email account and verify it.  Then edit the name of the account to change it back to your old email address.  You can now use your current password to turn off Find My iPhone on your device. Then go to Settings>iCloud, tap Delete Account and choose Delete from My iDevice when prompted (your iCloud data will still be in iCloud).  Next, go back to https//appleid.apple.com and change your primary email address and iCloud ID name back to the way it was.  You can now go to Settings>iCloud and sign in with your correct iCloud ID and password.
If you don't have access to your old email address, you will have to contact Apple to have them reset the password so you can disable Find My iPhone and sign into your iCloud account.  You can either go to https://expresslane.apple.com, select "More Products and Services", then "Apple ID", then  on the next page select "Other Apple ID Topics", then "Lost or forgotten Apple ID password" and click "Continue"; or you can contact Apple Support (http://www.apple.com/support/icloud/contact/).

Last night suddenly when I right-click-view-images in firefox, they appear centered and against a black background. It's usually meant to be a white background and the image appearing at top left. I can't remember what I did to change this if it's my fault; if someone knows how to revert it I'd be thankful.

cor-el : thanks for the pointers! I wish the solution isn't an add-on every time ... if such long-standing behaviour is going to change, the least that could be done is put in an about:config option to get back the old behaviour.

After last upgrade Apple TV 3 blue dots not disappearing after podcast is watched. How do I get them to disappear like they always have?

That crash appears to be casued by the Facebook plug-in.
Create a new account (systempreferences -> accounts or Users & Groups on 10.7 and 10.8), make a new Library in that account, import some shots  and see if the problem is repeated there. If it is, then a re-install of the app might be indicated. If it's not, then it's likely the app is okay and the problem is something in the main account.

  • Ever since the last upgrade, when I tap a cell to highlight it or add text a box pops up with text from other cells. How do I disable this feature?

How can I disable a pop up box that appears whenever I tap a cell in numbers for ios? This annoying feature accompanied the last upgrade. When I tap a cell to highlight it, a box pops up with all the words typed in the adjacent cells so I can populate the cell with one of them, but I neither need nor want the suggestions.

    Hi debdor,
I don't know where to find the setting in Numbers for iOS, but in Numbers for Mac OS X it is under Menu > Numbers > Preferences > General > Editing.
Show suggestions when editing table cells.
As you can see, I don't use it.

  • [SOLVED] ((none)) login/tty and no keyboard after last upgrade?

    Hi,
I dual boot and it's been a while since I last upgraded. I booted into Arch, updated everything, and used the system for a few days before rebooting (perhaps a bad call). I just rebooted today and my login prompt is like this:
    ((none)) tty1
    (none) login:
But my keyboard does nothing. No alt+f* to get to a different terminal, no nothing. I have to hard kill the machine. I've tried twice but would prefer not to do that more than I have to. The second time, fsck didn't work so I booted into the Arch install disk and ran it manually. I tried to chroot into my Arch install and re-run pacman -Syu but got transient server failures. Not sure what all needs to be in place to try and do that, though.
Has anyone encountered anything like this before? I get the same behavior with arch and arch fallback. I boot to login prompt, not directly to X so it's not anything to do with that, at least not that I would figure.
So far, the only thing I've been able to find is from 2007 (LINK) but it seemed related to X. I'm going to check rc.conf next time I boot up but wanted to see if there's any other suggestions from someone more experience before I boot up again and potentially have to hard kill.
    Thanks for any thoughts/suggestions.

    @Knute: indeed.
Somewhat embarrassingly, I just found out about manually maintaining *.pacnew files today when researching an unrelated issue. It made me wonder if that was my problem. Perhaps something is goofed in /etc which would explain a ton.
I'm in OS X right now but will reboot shortly and try to fix this issue.
The keyboard issue is troubling as well, though. Some have reported no logins, but often it's a PAM or login manager issue trying to go into X directly. I'm doing no such thing and literally can't get *anything* to work on my keyboard. That makes me wonder...
If I were to boot into the Arch CD and try to run pacman manually... what do I have to do other than
    # mount /dev/sda3 /mnt
    # chroot /mnt
I tried that yesterday but failed. I'm wondering if I have to mount some other items for that to work. /proc?

  • [SOLVED] Unable to boot after last upgrade [HP Smart Array]

    Hello guys.
After last upgrade I'm unable to boot. I have fileserver with 2 discs in HP Smart Array RAID 1.
While booting, kernel is unable to find my raid (should be cciss) and therefore lvm2 hook fails to find root partition. While going into recovery, I can chroot without an issue, lsmod shows that cciss driver is properly loaded, disk exits in /dev/cciss/, logical group and volumes are detected properly.
No matter what I do, I just can't get cciss module into kernel. Putting in MODULES in mkinitcpio.conf's MODULES="" didn't help. I'm listing my initramfs images and there is no cciss.ko. I'm also searching for module in my filesystem and can not find it.
    Any help will be appreciated.

Thank you for your quick reply.
DSpider wrote:First of all, have you tried the Fallback entry? Because initramfs-linux-fallback.img is supposed to have a full range of modules.
    Of course, no change.
    DSpider wrote:
Second, after editing /etc/mkinitcpio.conf you need to regenerate your initramfs.
    # mkinitcpio -p linux
But the MODULES section needs to have something in there...
    Here's mine:
    MODULES="pata_amd sata_nv ehci-hcd ohci-hcd ext2 ext3 ext4 vfat snd-hda-intel"
You probably need "mdadm" or "mdadm_udev" in there too, I'm not sure... I don't use RAID, but maybe these will help:
    https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Mk … Using_RAID
    https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/So … ID_and_LVM
HP Smart Array is hardware RAID, therefore I don't need mdadm. Right module should be cciss, but this is somehow not working. Adding this into MODULES does not add cciss module to image.
When I'm booting from Arch install for recovery and chroot, cciss is loaded and my HP Smart Array disk is visible.
