[Solved] I've broken pacman

I had a failure a couple of days ago during a pacman -Syu run. Since then, any attempt to run pacman -Syu results in messages that all package databases are up to date and there is nothing to do.
I know that isn't correct - there are several updates to packages I have instaled. I've had a look through the pacman man page and done a bit of hunting through the forum, but so far, I've no clue how to fix the problem. Can anyone tell me what I might do to fix pacman so it updates again?
I tried moving the local copies of the databases and then ran pacman -Syu again. That resulted in a download of each of the databases, but I still get the message that there is nothing to do, so it looks as though pacman has lost track of what it installed.
Paul.

Thanks for the replies....
I've not touched the mirror list, will have to see if I can grab an updated one and try that. Running pacman syy reloads the database lists, but still doesn't find anything new.
Looking back through the log, the last real update was just before I installed acroread from AUR. Unfortunately I need it to complete my tax return, which has to be done soon. As a result, I have multilib enabled.
Running pacman -Q produces a long list of packages, but running pacman -Syu still does this:
[root@sirius fang]# pacman -Syu
:: Synchronising package databases...
core is up to date
extra is up to date
community is up to date
multilib is up to date
:: Starting full system upgrade...
warning: seamonkey: local (2.14.1-1) is newer than community (2.14-1)
there is nothing to do
I built the latest seamonkey last night, which explains the warning, but so far as I can see, there should be a number of updated files to install.
Paul.

Have you tried running pacman -Syy?

  • [SOLVED]Broken pacman

    Hi guys,
after a fresh installation when i'm following post installation i got an error. I suspect is caused by yaourt repo. Because last time i haven't problems when i hadn't used.
Now i have an error of "libarchive" and etc. Any command and action report an error.
So reading the wiki i read how fix pacman and with wget i took the packages:
    openssl, libarchive, pacman
    Used: wget http://www.archlinux.org/packages/core/ … l/download
    wget http://www.archlinux.org/packages/core/ … e/download
    wget http://www.archlinux.org/packages/core/ … n/download
I read (don't remember where) that when i use wget, it download in the folder where i am.
I used it, after logging so i'm in the / right?
After i did (assumed that wget download right in the root / :
    tar -xvzf openssl
    Got an error.
So i used the search in the forum and found another user that had my same problem.
An user advice him to use this (for installing pacman):
tar -xvpf pacman -C --exclude .PKGINFO --exclude .INSTALL
    Got same error.
At this time i'm yet without pacman and i'm stuck to finish post installation and install xorg and video drivers u.u
Hope that someone can help me and i excuse if this question is yet answered many times but i had searched for an hour without big help.
Sorry also for my bad english.
    Thanks, Gabriele.
edit: i noted that the file that download (in case of openssl) have this name: openssl-1.0.1.a-1-x86_64.pkg.tar
So i have tried: tar -xvzf openssl-1.0.1.a-1-x86_64.pkg.tar
    Same error

Because yesterday i broke my pacman.
Now any tip i write with pacman before report to me:
error while loading shared libraries: libarchive.so.12: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory
So i'm go to the wiki and found that article that you posted. Yes i'm trying. I had understood how to extract the packages (from wiki: tar -Jxvf package.tar.xz) (i haven't seen before, my fault). No i don't know, i'm setting the pacman key and later is began to be crazy. I'm pretty noob i know.

The one thing I can think of is that before I shut down the night before this problem occurred, it was telling me there was some conflict, and it wanted to remove a package.  I believe I told it not to remove it, because I wanted to do a complete backup before removing a package I didn't know anything about.  I believe it had the word "mod" or "mode" in it, not sure, it definitely started with an "m" though.

I just noticed something new.  At the end of the long error message when I try running sudo pacman -Syu, I got this
    :: Replace lib32-libgl with catalyst/lib32-catalyst-utils? [Y/n]
    :: Replace module-init-tools with core/kmod? [Y/n]
    resolving dependencies...
    looking for inter-conflicts...
:: kmod and module-init-tools are in conflict. Remove module-init-tools? [y/N]
    error: unresolvable package conflicts detected
error: failed to prepare transaction (conflicting dependencies)
:: kmod and module-init-tools are in conflict
I'm pretty sure it didn't do that yesterday.  However, I'm 90% certain that module-init-tools was the package it wanted me to remove.  It didn't give me these errors before I shut down 2 nights ago though
error: could not open file /var/lib/pacman/sync/archlinuxfr.db: Unrecognized archive format
error: could not open file /var/lib/pacman/sync/archlinuxfr.db: Unrecognized archive format
it only gave me the dependency conflict.

  • [SOLVED] GRUB crashed after pacman -Su

    Hello all,
I did a system update about 2 hours ago, I did pacman -Syy and pacman -Su. Every thing looked normal.
Restarted and system crashes right in GRB, it doesn't even shows the menu or error message, it just fills the screen with "GRUB GRUB GRUB GRUB GRUB GRUB GRUB".
I checked the disk, partition tables are ok, and the whol HD looks ok, no errors at all (checked with system rescue cd, a gentoo live cd).
I also mounted the boot partition, all files seem to be ok, grub menu, etc..
/grub/menu.lst was modified today, but looks ok.
Any Idea of what could happen?
    How to solve it?
Should I try to replace grub?

    Thank you hcjl and demian.
    Problem solved after GRUB re-install.
Here is the procedure (resume from hcjl links) I made, just in case someone else needs it:
1- Download the arch iso and write it to cd or dvd
2- Run the cd, login as root
3- Mount arch and boot partitions:
-Find boot and arch partitions with
    fdisk -l
Create a directory where you would like to mount the arch partition, then mount it:
    mkdir /mnt/arch
    mount /dev/<device-or-partition-name> /mnt/arch
    4- Changing Root:
    cd /mnt/arch
    mount -t proc proc proc/
    mount -t sysfs sys sys/
    mount -o bind /dev dev/
    Mount the boot partition:
    mount /dev/<device-or-partition-name> boot/
    And change root:
    chroot . /bin/bash
5- Install GRUB on hd0 (first hard drive):
    # grub
    grub> setup (hd0)
    6- Exit all, reboot
That fixed my problem, and preserved my original GRUB menu (I did a backup of broken GRUB, but it was nor necesary)
Thank you all for your help.

    [2009-07-09 12:18] upgraded sed (4.2-1 -> 4.2.1-1)
If I remember correctly the kernel-headers upgraded just fine, then with glibc something went wrong, I saw an error for glibc and some of the following packages that said something like:
"error: scriptlet failed to execute correctly"
After this the system became unresponsive and I could not even switch to to any consoles and I had to turn the pc off by force.
Trying to reboot is not an option as it will stop with a kernel panic with the error just before saying:
"kinit: /sbin/init: No such file or directory"
The file is there, I have confirmed it with an install image, I have tried (pacman -r) to try to reinstall some of the packages but it didn't work. I have also tried (pacman -r -Sy base) and that fails too with the scriptlet error.
This goes beyond what I can fix myself, any help solving this will be greatly appreciated.
    Edit:
    Fixed typos.
I have also tried to chroot into the partition but it doesn't work complaining it can't find /bin/bash (which is there also).
Meanwhile I have also tried to remove all base packages and reinstall them but it doesn't work too, the same scriptlet error, a clean install on another disk does work fine but I would like to avoid reinstalling everything again.
    Edit 2:
Solved by reinstalling, couldn't afford to wait too long before finding a solution.

Can't you installing anything ? it hears very badly
    pacman -Qo /sbin/init
    /sbin/init is owned by sysvinit-mod 2.86-2
If any better idea, than install a working toolchain with manually, copy the binary of them to the desired /bin /sbin, etc.. library.

  • Please solve this mysterious broken run arrow

Everything works great for a while. Then suddenly, this will happen. This is on a PXI chassis using a lot of LVOOP. It happened on my PC so I moved the code all to a VM. It worked fine for a while, then it just came back. These are NI's VIs. The weird thing is, if I diagram disable them, I still can't deploy. I get a broken run arrow right at the end of the deployment (when it says deploying Main), but when the broken run arrow is clicked I have the error list with no errors in it. Tried closing everything, still problem not solved.

How to Fix Your LabVIEW Failed to Compile or LabView Broken Arrow on Compile.
If you have a happy vi running in LabVIEW and it has a happy arrow then it SHOULD compile to an executable. RIGHT??!! NOT... Frequently, especially if the project is LARGE, it will not properly compile!
I show you how you can compile EVEN when you have a broken arrow!
When LabVIEW fails on building an executable it sometimes does not show you WHERE the error is. It also tells you that you need files that you are not using! Go figure! This is because some of the files are ignored that should not be ignored.

  • [SOLVED]Ncurses applications broken

    Hi,
I have been using Arch Linux for about an year now. Its really is an awesome distro and I havent faced much problems with it, but for recently a minor bump. I spend most of my time in the console session using the ncurses based applications like finch, tmux, etc. However, recently after installing gnome, these applications appear broken. Instead of drawing lines, the draw a sequence of charachters, which kinda looks ugly. Though, they appear perfect in gnome-terminal/xterm. After, some googling, I found out it might be related to locale settings. In my rc.conf, LOCALE="en_US.UTF-8". Is there anything I am missing out? Any pointers? Appreciate your help.

    That would be mine... https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=143439
And I wanna say that 'all those others' are pretty well hidden or maybe people just don't know to use clever keywords, like 'ncurses'...
Just pointing out that it is not just limited to ncurses. I had the same problem with mc (which i solved a few days ago), and it depends on slang.

  • [SOLVED ]makepkg asking for pacman-color binary

After upgrading pacman to 4.1 I'm getting this error every time I run makepkg:
    /usr/bin/makepkg -s -i
==> ERROR: Cannot find the pacman-color binary required for dependency operations.
Even if I try to use --nocolor:
    /usr/bin/makepkg --nocolor -s -i
==> ERROR: Cannot find the pacman-color binary required for dependency operations.
I've tried enabling and disabling color options in both makepkg.conf and pacman.conf, and the error is still there.
Any clue on what could be going on and how to solve it?
    Thank you in advance

    echo $PACMAN
    pacman-color
I guess I've forgotten to edit some file that I changed when using pacman-color-testing from the AUR.
EDIT: Indeed, I forgot to edit my .zprofile that used to export PACMAN as pacman-color. Solved now
    Thank you, Allan

  • [SOLVED] nfsroot install broken after kernel upgrade 3.5.6 to 3.6.2

It seems my nfsroot installations have broken after the kernel upgrade to 3.6.2.
This is as far as the boot process gets now (hand copied from the screen):
    IP-Config: eth0 complete (from 10.48.50.20):
    address: 10.48.50.240 broadcast: 10.48.50.255 netmask: 255.255.255.0

Bailing out, you are on your own. Good luck.

On the server this is what is logged:

Oct 16 21:10:14 tuon rpc.mountd[1323]: refused unmount request from 10.48.50.240 for /new_root (/): not exported
It looks to me like the client is sending the mount request, the server accepts and then for some reason the client thinks it has failed. I can't even see anything strange in the wireshark traces comparing the working client (3.5.6) to the broken one (3.6.2).
Anyone else using nfsroot successfully with the latest kernel?
    Any other ideas?
(by the way - despite my directory names, this is using nfs v3 for the rootfs)

Just to confirm that I also have this problem with nfsroot (nfs4 this time) with 3.6.2. Downgrading the kernel does make it go away.
When it is working normally I do seem to get refused unmount messages at shutdown for some reason
refused unmount request from 192.168.1.86 for / (/): not exported
, but the /new_root bit is new and I have no idea where it comes from.
refused unmount request from 192.168.1.86 for /new_root (/): not exported
So I wonder if it asking for the wrong path.
That unmount issue will be solved by FS#32021.
Unfortunately, that doesn't help with mounting in the first place with 3.6.2

  • [SOLVED] Wine suddenly broken

Ok first of all I don't know if this is related to the pacman issues that has been reported.
Did an upgrade today wich included an upgrade of wine. Half way through wine it throws an error and doesn't complete the upgrade. It appears as if pacman has removed wine and then not been able to install the newer version of it because now I can't start my apps anymore due to some files missing. Any ideas?
Edit: Ok, so a pacman -Sf wine solved the issue for now it seems.

    Thanks again for you suggestions.
But I don't think it's causing problems as it's part of Kwin (the KDE windows manager) and if I'm correct Xmonad is another WM.
So I don't think it really has an effect. I think it matters only if you use Kwin and it's effects.
Yes, xmonad is another window manager. But I doubt it has anything to do with this konqueror problem, since it worked perfectly until some update a few days back. Unfortunately I could not find a way to figure out which packages had been updated in the last days (man pacman is silent about that).
Maybe check you Konqueror settings. Or your windows management settings.
In Konqueror look at performance and web settings.
But I can't help you with windows manager.
Again, I doubt that any settings are to blame, because until that ominous update everything worked like a charm.
But I am curious why do you even use Konqueror I'm a KDE user and I don't use it. mostly because Flash can be a bit of a pain sometimes working and sometimes not.
The flash problems are annoying, but other than that Konqueror is the least annoying browser I know of. It is configurable without headaches (it has MENUES for easy configuration), the design is more pleasant than Firefox, and it does not send information about my browsing habits to Google or any other companies.

  • [SOLVED] Unable to update pacman - Catalyst database issue

    Hi there,
I have the AMD catalyst drivers installed for Dell 1555 laptop. As they changed their server URL, I updated my pacman.conf as directed in Arch wiki and then added the GPG key with the following commands.

    # pacman-key --lsign-key 0xabed422d653c3094

Strangely, I did a pacman -Syu today and it worked well without any error. Not sure what was broken, but it is fixed now.

hi, really sorry as I said I'm somewhat of a newbie, was waiting to see what you guys thought might be relevant so I could tell you what I've got, here goes:
    graphics card: nvidia geforce GTX660.
DE/WM (I assume is desktop environment): gnome
unsure about how I start X (sorry I understand I am a newbie)
oh and everything does seem to be hanging, ctrl-c does nothing.
there were no messages from the update, I checked pacman and didn't see any warnings, (is there any kind of log I can check in case I missed something?), I've chrooted into the disk through the installation medium to reinstall the graphics card drivers (as suggested here https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=153206)

  • [SOLVED] Parsing output of pacman -Qm to an bash array

    Hey guys,
I'm currently writing a small bash script to check if there are any updates for my packages installed from the AUR. For this I need to get an array from the output of
    pacman -Qm
    . I've tried this
    packages=(`pacman -Qm`)
, but this isn't that what I've intended for.
I want to have an array like this
    packages=("packagename version", "packagename version" ...)
Does anybody know the way, how to solve this problem?
    Best regards,
    the_metalgamer
    Last edited by the_metalgamer (2013-02-23 22:24:11)

    Just to clarify this:
With the solution in post #2 the IFS variable will contain just an "n". So any package name containing an "n" will be cut into pieces.
    $ echo ${packages[1]}
    e emyli es3 1.2-1
The correct splitting is not caused by the IFS variable but by the read command which ALWAYS stops reading at a newline no matter what the IFS is set to. So there is no need to set the IFS variable to anything different and just use
    packages=(); while read -r; do packages+=("$REPLY"); done < <(pacman -Qm)
