(SOLVED) IDENTIFYING A SERVER

I know this is a silly questions but I'm new at this and going at it alone. I'm running Windows 7 and I installed SQL Server Express 2012 with SQL Server Management Studio. I don't know how to setup the server to connect to it. All things point to connecting
to a server. What server? I want to have a local one on the workstation. How do I create that? I also tried to access the services via the SQL Server Configuration Manager and there are none listed. When I click on SQL Server Services, it clearly states, "there
are no items to show in this view."
What am I missing?
Thanks, Shawn

    Hi Sam,
just issue the command show ip arp , it will display some thing like this for know the MAC address & the VLAN number.
Protocol Address Age (min) Hardware Addr Type Interface
    Internet 10.2.1.18 9 0800.6913.710e ARPA Vlan2
to know on which port it is connected, just issue the command as mentioned below
    sh mac-address-table address 0800.6913.710e
    Mac Address Table
    Vlan Mac Address Type Ports

how can i solve the vpn server could not be found error on my iphone 5s?

FWIW, back at work we have a Palo Alto Networks firewall and VPN. Have configured both the iPhone and the iPad with the pertinent details.
If I connect while in the premises (same LAN), connection is instantaneous and flawless.
If I connect while away, no matter which external network, the first attempt to connect ALWAYS fails with a NOT FOUND error. Yet if I try again immediately after, it ALWAYS connects with no further issues.

Problem solved! I just noticed that I hadn't check which nvidia version I was using, as the log says:
(WW) NVIDIA(0): The NVIDIA GeForce4 MX 4000 GPU installed in this system is
(WW) NVIDIA(0):     supported through the NVIDIA 96.43.xx Legacy drivers.

(WW) NVIDIA(0):     this GPU.  Continuing probe...
And in fact I was using the 180.51 driver. Then I did the following:
    # pacman -Rd nvidia nvidia-utils
    Then:
    # pacman -S nvidia-96xx nvidia-96xx-utils
    And it's working now!
    Thank you guys

  • Can you help me solve my Leopard Server VPN madness?

    Hello all,
I've been having a devil of a time getting Leopard Server's VPN service to work "properly". None of this is mission critical, as it's simply on a home system I'm using as a nat/dns/dhcp/firewall/mail/web server for my Comcast line (with a static IP). But, it is frustrating, because I currently have a 10.4.11 Server fulfilling the same roll. So it seems like Leopard should be able to be made to work. I'm gonna go step by step here with my install process in the hopes that if I'm doing something wrong someone will be kind enough to catch it. Thanks for bearing with me.
I've installed Leopard Server 10.5 (Mirror door G4, FYI) with the built-in ethernet connected to my Comcast router (with a static external IP). Immediately after 10.5 installs I restart and update everything to 10.5.2, then I install a Sonnet Gigabit NIC, it's drivers, and assign it 192.168.3.1, where it will live as my internal router, server, etc. I turn on DNS and setup an internal ".lan" zone that resolves to 192.168.3.1. Pop into Terminal and confirm that rDNS is in fact working, it is. And check that "changeip -checkhostname" resolves itself correctly (to the external IP).
Next, turn on the NAT service and run the gateway setup assistant. After a reboot I quickly check that my internal clients with static IPs (192.168.3.10, .20, etc) are working and pulling DNS OK, they are. Jump into the Firewall, and for the moment just open it wide up by accepting all connections. At various times during testing I've configured the firewall to exactly match my 10.4 Server firewall, but for the time being I can just leave it open. I create a Firewall group to cover my 192.168.3.x internal network, and another to handle 192.168.3.60/29 to handle the VPN service I'll setup in a sec. Jump over to the DHCP service where by default gateway setup creates a 192.168.1.x DHCP zone. I delete that and create a new 192.168.3.x zone covering .50-.59. Turn DHCP on and confirm it's working, good, it is.
Now, here is where the VPN fun begins. The last service I turn on is the VPN service (I've alternatively tried letting Gateway Setup activate it, and just doing it myself, with this same result). I configure it to accept L2TP at 192.168.3.60 - .63. Like I said this is a home server, so I don't need a lot of VPN connections. Finally, when I test the VPN from a 10.5.2 Client (MacBook coming in off a neighbors open wireless network with a 10.0.0.x string) I am able to connect, and I can see/ping/mount/share screen on the server. I can also ping the attached VPN client at 192.168.3.60 from the server. However, I cannot ping or see (In ARD) any other machines on the internal network from the attached VPN client. Likewise from one of the internal systems, say my Mac mini at 192.168.3.10 I cannot ping the attached VPN client at 192.168.3.60. Out of curiosity I've tried doing a rDNS lookup while attached to the VPN and the client isn't able to resolve any of the internal DNS entries.
So, what gives? As I've mentioned I have exactly this same setup working just fine with Tiger Server. Same NAT, same Firewall, same DNS, and same L2TP VPN setup. For the life of me though, I cannot get attached VPN clients to see the internal network when I put Leopard Server in place. Clearly the internal DNS isn't working for attached VPN clients, although I'm not certain if that is a cause or a symptom. I've setup a network routing definition for the internal private network, which didn't help. I also tried setting up PPTP instead of L2TP, and had the same problem.
Is anyone having similar problems with Leopard Server's VPN service? If not, could someone hit me with the clue stick and set me right? As I said, in the grand scheme of things this isn't a big deal for me. But, it's just frustrating that I can get so close to updating my home server and just fall short.
    Thanks!

Your post actually contains the Key to solve the problem and there is not really a big need for going all the way to use the Property List Editor to fork around /etc/ipfilter/ipaddressgroups.plist.
There has been much written on this problem but basically you see that most is trial and error and this does include myself and my findings in this post, too, but I think I can further narrow down on what CAUSES this problem and how to fix it.
First off, we are talking a combination of using NAT (Network Address Translation - bridging an Internet connection on an external network card over to an internal network card), Firewall (which is needed in OS X to be have NAT working because the Firewall "helps" NAT by doing its job, DHCP (for providing dynamic IP addresses to clients on the internal network, don't confuse, DHCP is not providing this service to the VPN clients, that is done by the VPN server), and - last but not least - VPN to provide access to not only to the server but to any machine on the internal network over the outside network card (aka, giving remote clients a chance to connect to the local network over the public Internet in a save and nice way).
OK. The short story: you can do it ALL in Mac OS X 10.5's Server Admin tool. If it fails it is nearly always the Firewall!
You can check if this is the case for your setup by temporarily opening the Firewall up to not block any traffic: in Server Admin, click on Firewall -> Settings -> Services -> Edit Service for: any and click "Allow all trafic from "any"", save it (and to be 100% sure, stop and restart the firewall. If your clients can NOW connect at least to the server, it was the firewall. Now don't forget to switch off allowing all traffic from any, or you will be left with an open doors server ready for anybody to explore
Now what goes wrong in the first place? It appears that the GSA (Gateway Setup Assistant) that is "hidden away" in the NAT settings does something awfully wrong. It will set up all the address groups in the firewall: the any group will remain as it is usually, another one defining the internal network, and a one called VPN-net for VPN.
What it DOES do wrong here (I am no firewall expert, this is purely trial and error, so please anybody do explain!) is to give the VPN-net exactly the same address range as the internal network. And here seems to be the overall problem.
When Twintails wrote to add 192.168.3.60/27 as address range for VPN, I realized what he/she did. Writing 192.168.3.60/27 effectively narrows down the address range starting at 192.168.3.33 up to 192.168.3.62. There are millions of subnetmask calculators out on the net, give it a try e.g. here: http://www.subnet-calculator.com/
So, I looked for what range of address will actually be given out by the VPN server to VPN clients upon connections. Of course you need to make sure that this address range is NOT given out by your DHCP server.
In my setup, the server is 192.168.1.1, the DHCP server provides addresses from 192.168.1.10 up to 192.168.1.127 (I start with 10 because I have some static addresses for special purposes from 192.168.1.2 to 192.168.1.9. So, this means, anything above 192.168.1.127 is potentially "free" for my VPN connections.
Next I used the subnetmask calculator to find a narrow address group that matched my purposes. I found 192.168.1.192/26 which effectively gives me a range from 192.168.1.192 to 192.168.1.255 (which is in fact more then I have clients connecting from externally!).
I went to the Server Admin Tool, and clicked Firewall -> Settings -> Address Group and edited the VPN-net one. First I deleted what was in "Addresses in group" and entered from scratch 192.168.1.192/26. Next - just to make certain because basically this is what Twintails had in his/her post by saying to add a name String with exactly the same information - I overwrote VPN-net by 192.168.1.192/26 and saved. (I THINK that this last step might not really be needed, but I haven't tried).
Next click Save (basically it should already work, but I always want to be extra sure, so I stoped and immediately thereafter started the firewall again to be 100% certain all new rules are now active.
And now: it works! Clients can access the server AND the entire local network from remote using VPN.
One last comment: I have the feeling that (although less safe and less advanced technologicall) PPTP works much better for us then L2TP. So I have switched off L2TP support altogether because it simply NEVER really worked. We are using Mac OS X 10.4 and 10.5 to connect to the 10.5 server using this setup.

  • [SOLVED] Air Video Server Error Message

Does anyone here have any experience with Air Video Server for Linux? I sure hope so...
I'm trying to install Air Video Server on my Arch box so I can watch movies on my iPad without using my mac or converting the video files. I got everything installed, and the server software was running. When I tried to start a video on my iPad, I got "unexpected error." So, I killed the process and started the server manually, and then tried to play a video. This is the output that I got. Maybe you can help?

It seems to me that there's a problem with creating a thumbnail. Any ideas?

Alright, I have figured it out after much working! After doing some searching and realizing that no one had encountered this problem with Arch Linux before, I decided to search specifically by the error that Java was giving, instead of trying to relate it to Air Video Server. I had to edit the script that launched the daemon (/usr/bin/air-video-server) to add the option -Djava.awt.headless=true and then I needed to install an additional library (that wasn't on the dependencies list, ironically enough) fontconfig. I guess fontconfig is standard with X11, which is why it wasn't listed as a dependency. It's also why I needed to add the headless option to the launch script, because I don't use a GUI, just a CLI. This is solved, and I'll leave it up for others that may encounter similar problems.

  • Has anyone really solved the "Media server unexpectedly quit" error?

I've seen many posts and suggested solutions, but no definitive solution. This is a severe problem for Final Cut Pro, and it's presently keeping me from doing any kind of work with this software.
Thanks for any help on this!!

    Greg,
This solved the problem for me.
"In Compressor, if the "Video Format" is set to "Automatic", Batch Monitor fails (with the "Media Server unexpectedly quit" error).
changing the Video Format to NTSC and the frame rate to 29.97 (but leaving the Field Dominance on Automatic), the job submits and processes fine."
Make Video Format PAL and the frame rate 25, if working with PAL sources.
    Good luck,
    Luc

unfortunately nothing is reported in the log file , please see the bottom of the message to see what's in the log file
this is all i see in the log and this is added to log when the page is loaded before i try to launch my dialog page and nothing else is added to the error i am getting. and in IE it just says page cannot be displayed and firefox reports the 500 Internal server error with the message i posted in original post
we have QA server and there i deployed the application from jdeveloper and it works Okay , but for production , production services team deployed the application using the EAR file i am giving to them and i am getting this error. ( I am providing them with the EAR file generated when i deploy the application to QA from jdeveloper)
I thought i try to deploy this to QA from ear file to see if i can reproduce the problem , so undeployed my application and tried to deploy using ear file in qa, but it never goes to step 2. it hangs on the screen uploading file ..... it never completes uploading and it does not fail with error either

  • [SOLVED] Trac standalone server refusing to start as daemon

    Dear people,
Few months ago I set up trac to manage/access my svn repositories at work. The standalone tracd server got started as daemon from rc.conf, authentication with htdigest, everything was just fine.  Yesterday I realized that tracd was not reachable, and trying a start/restart:
    # /etc/rc.d/tracd start
    Usage: tracd [options] [projenv] ...
tracd: error: no such option: --auth '*',/srv/GroupWiki/htdigest,MyDomain.org
The relevant part of /etc/conf.d/tracd is:
    PORT=80
    AUTH="'*',/srv/proj1/htdigest,MyDomain.org"
    PROJECT="/srv/proj1 /srv/proj2"
Thing is, if I start tracd from the command line using those same options, it runs fine:
    # tracd -p 80 --auth "'*',/srv/proj1/htdigest,MyDomain.org" /srv/proj1 /srv/proj2
    Server starting in PID 25260.
Serving on 0.0.0.0:80 view at http://127.0.0.1:80/
    Using HTTP/1.1 protocol version
    Any hint?

Thanks Pingwinski! There is a problem with quoting, but not in the tracd.conf. Well, I had to edit the /etc/rc.d/tracd file to remove the extra quoting around "$AUTH" (and by the way, remove the $SINGLE variable, I didn't find any definition or reference to that...!!
    Before:
    tracd $SINGLE -d $HOSTNAME $PORT "$AUTH" $PROJECT
    After:
    tracd -d $HOSTNAME $PORT $AUTH $PROJECT
In conf.d/tracd.conf the line doesn't need extra escaping, i.e. is working like this:
    AUTH="'*',/srv/project/htdigest,MyDomain.org"
Sending a message to the maintainer to take a look at this.

  • [SOLVED] Identifier of Meta key in xkb/symbols

Hi!  I used to swap CapsLock with Esc for better vim usability by just adding the following lines to xkb/symbols at the section corresponding to my layout:
    key <CAPS> { [ Escape, Escape, Escape, Escape ] };
    key <ESC> { [ CapsLock, CapsLock, CapsLock, CapsLock ] };
(Maybe it was Escape in lower case but basically that just worked.)
Now I'm on a chromebook with the Meta key in place of CapsLock and I can't find its identifier.  I tried <META> and <MOD4> with no success.  I don't think it's something chromebook specific as other applications correctly recognize the Meta key.
    Thanks for your help!

OK got it!  The key identifier is <LWIN> and the function (to which I want to map <ESC>) is Meta_L.

  • [SOLVED] building xorg-server: libgl & nvidia-utils conflict

    Hello!
I somehow feel like I'm totally missing the point, but...
edit: although I think (not sure any more) this was the same procedure when I first compiled xorg-server, I maybe should mention, I'm now using the testing xorg.
I still don't really understand, why I need libgl to build xorg-server. Aren't nvidia-utils supposed to replace that? Is there a way of building xorg-server with nvidia-utils instead of libgl and if yes: are there (dis-/) advantages doing so other than not having to uninstall nvidia-utils while compiling xorg-server?
Or the other way around: Perhaps it's just me, but I feel "funny" having to remove something that's vital to my installation before I can compile something that's vital to my installation, too... so is it really OK to remove nvidia-utils and compile xorg-server without it or am I doing it wrong?
    Thank you for enlightening me

Well AFAIK, The nVIDIA closed source drivers haven't caught up with xorg server 1.6 which is why you need libgl to build xorg-xserver 1.6+. I personally perfer the open source drivers over Fglrx (FireGL and Radeon X) and the closed source nVIDIA drivers as well.
edit: xorg server is 1.6 in testing so if you want to compile from source, and have the closed source nvidia drivers, you would need to compile xorg server 1.5.XX
P.S. You cannot have both, the nvidia drivers and the open source drivers (libgl), running at the same time which is why the nvidia-* packages are to be removed.
    Cheers!

  • [SOLVED] "X font server" - where are you in arch?

can't find xfs/xfstt or fslsfonts and associated utilities to run/manage a font server.
tried looking everywhere - main repos, aur, googling etc...
the only mention of "font server" is found in wiki https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Fonts
    pkgfile returns nothing for xfs,xfstt,fslsfonts
can anybody help me find those?

As far as packages go, debian stable (wheezy) provides https://packages.debian.org/wheezy/xfs and https://packages.debian.org/wheezy/xfstt, so do most of rpm based distros.
As Trilby suggested, maybe it'd be possible to achieve the same with Arch, without using xfs/xfstt, so let me briefly describe what i'm trying to do.
I'm trying to run a persistent (hibernate-able) X session, using xpra with xephyr and xdmx, connecting to lightdm via xdmcp - basically it goes something like this:
    $xpra start :100 --start-child="Xephyr :101 -ac +xinerama +bs -screen 800x600 -wr -keybd ephyr,,,xkbmodel=evdev"
    $xpra start :200 --start-child="Xephyr :201 -ac +xinerama +bs -screen 800x600 -wr -keybd ephyr,,,xkbmodel=evdev"
    $xpra start :300 --start-child="Xephyr :301 -ac +xinerama +bs -screen 800x600 -wr -keybd ephyr,,,xkbmodel=evdev"
    $Xdmx :10 -display :101 -display :201 -display :301 +xinerama -input :101 -param XkbRules evdev -ac -query localhost
xpra is used for network transparency, xephyr for compatibility and xdmx to actually create a single desktop, xdmcp is enabled in lightdm.
Everything works, except for "-query localhost" with xdmx. Apparently there's a long standing bug/feature of using lightdm with xdmx, where xdmx is incapable of displaying fonts, if provided by client side, ie. appending "-fontpath /usr/share/fonts/[blah blah]".
On debian i worked around it with "-fontpath tcp/10.0.10.10:7101" and everything was running just the way i wanted to, with xfs[tt] and friends.
Now, after switching to Arch, i discovered that xfs is not provided anywhere. Perhaps there's a different way of achieving the same funtionality i'm looking for. I welcome any suggestions. Meanwhile i'll try packaging xfs[tt] myself.
And thanks for your replies people!
    P.S. current xfstt is developed/maintained here - http://www.hadrons.org/software/xfstt/

  • [SOLVED] Running mercurial server (hg serve) at boot

    Hi,
I'm trying to run hg serve in rc.local but for some reason the server doesn't seem to start.
Besides comments, my rc.local contains this:
    echo conservative >/sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu0/cpufreq/scaling_governor
    echo 55 >/sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu0/cpufreq/conservative/down_threshold
hg serve --daemon --port 5000 --prefix /mnt/data/Dev/Projets/Robot/
After booting, hg is not running. But If I copy-paste the hg serve line into a terminal, that works.
I can't find any related error message in dmesg or /var/log/messages.log, but I'm not sure if they are the good places to look.
/mnt/data is an NTFS partition that is declared in fstab and mounted at boot. This is supposed to happen before rc.local is run...
Also I tried running the server as root and that works, so that's not the problem (even though I might want to run it as another user).
Any idea why hg doesn't start when run in rc.local?

Thanks, I hadn't thought about that. Here is the error message I got:
"abort: There is no Mercurial repository here (.hg not found)!"
I tried a lot of things, googled and rebooted way too many times before I understood my error: "hg serve" has to be run from within the repository directory!
    This works:
cd /mnt/data/Dev/Projets/Robot/ && hg serve --daemon --port 5000 --prefix /mnt/data/Dev/Projets/Robot/
And I lost so much time looking for mount and permissions problems... :-\
    Thanks for your help!
