[SOLVED] intel-ucode update - implementation?

There is a new intel-ucode package in testing and it will be released soon - this is going to require some intervention to get the microcode update on boot.  Is there going to be some advice for adding in the additional initrd lines for different bootloaders/bootmanagers?
For example if I understand correctly for rEFInd it will need an amendment to the refind_linux.conf or perhaps if you have menuentry stanzas then additional initrd sections can be added in the refind.conf?
Does anyone know if there is a recommended way to do this for rEFInd, and for other bootloaders that are in common use?

I have just updated my system to the new kernel and new microcode packages (linux 3.17.1-1 intel-ucode 20140913-1).  This system boots with rEFInd.  The /boot/refind_linux.conf file was edited to include the microcode image file as an initrd= entry with lines as
# cat /boot/refind_linux.conf
"Boot to X" "root=PARTUUID=b0c9c220-0f8d-49c1-b306-873d2519ce47 rw rootfstype=ext4 add_efi_memmapinitrd=/boot/intel-ucode.img initrd=/boot/initramfs-linux.img systemd.unit=graphical.target"
"Boot to console" "root=PARTUUID=b0c9c220-0f8d-49c1-b306-873d2519ce47 rw rootfstype=ext4 add_efi_memmap initrd=/boot/intel-ucode.img initrd=/boot/initramfs-linux.img systemd.unit=multi-user.target"
"Boot Fallback to console" "root=PARTUUID=b0c9c220-0f8d-49c1-b306-873d2519ce47 rw rootfstype=ext4 add_efi_memmap initrd=/boot/intel-ucode.img initrd=/boot/initramfs-linux-fallback.img systemd.unit=multi-user.target"
The system boots in the same time as previously with kernel 3.16 and the journal log confirms early microcode update.
# journalctl -b | grep microcode
Oct 23 15:41:56 localhost kernel: CPU0 microcode updated early to revision 0x1b, date = 2014-05-29
Oct 23 15:41:56 localhost kernel: CPU1 microcode updated early to revision 0x1b, date = 2014-05-29
Oct 23 15:41:56 localhost kernel: microcode: CPU0 sig=0x306a9, pf=0x2, revision=0x1b
Oct 23 15:41:56 localhost kernel: microcode: CPU1 sig=0x306a9, pf=0x2, revision=0x1b
Oct 23 15:41:56 localhost kernel: microcode: CPU2 sig=0x306a9, pf=0x2, revision=0x1b
Oct 23 15:41:56 localhost kernel: microcode: CPU3 sig=0x306a9, pf=0x2, revision=0x1b
Oct 23 15:41:56 localhost kernel: microcode: Microcode Update Driver: v2.00 <[email protected]>, Peter Oruba
So the updated kernel works fine for early microcode update, with the small amendment to the refind_linux.conf file as the rEFInd author suggested it would. I have tested this on three different machines all of which use rEFInd to boot. It is presumed that the latest microcode for the CPU in this machine is dated correctly as 2014-05-29.

  • [Solved] intel-ucode/amd-ucode

EDIT: Solution is in Post #4
I have a question about: intel-ucode.  It says it's a microcode update for intel processors (there is a corresponding AMD package but I'm intel).  I already have "microcode_ctl" installed and for some reason that package will just not show up in the Packages search on this site.  Has it been depreciated in favor of "intel-ucode"?  Should I have both installed?  Should I remove "microcode_ctl" and install "intel-ucode"?
    $ pacman -Ss microcode_ctl
    extra/microcode_ctl 1.17.20111110-1 [installed]
A companion to the IA32 microcode kernel driver
(This is my local output as an installed package but the package search function of this forum returns no hits)
Edit: Also, I have "microcode" in my rc.conf daemons array as it's supposed to be so if I uninstalled it and added intel-ucode would I have to do something similar?  It's frustrating when you don't find any obvious documentation for a package..

josephk wrote:please, update the microcode page in wiki
I would edit the wiki but I just don't know if the instructions are the same for "amd-ucode."  I'm an intel owner only and have only done it once on my own machine.  The wiki should be updated but, for myself, I don't have all the facts to do so.
If someone else would like to take a shot at it, here is the wiki page in question:
    https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Microcode
The references to "microcode_ctl" are now non-existent.  That package is now gone as anyone can now verify themselves.
Edit: there is a reference on the page now which talks about "using testing" with the intel-ucode and amd-ucode packages.  That now needs to be the primary information and the microcode_ctl information needs to be stripped out.

This news sounds quite scary to me. The big question is if anything I do can brick my computer.
Does doing this on kernels < 3.17.2 brick my computer?
Will upgrading to 3.17.2 without doing this brick my computer?

    Hi,
I have a rather silly question. I can't figure out if I have Intel microcode updates enabled. I have installed the intel-ucode package from [extra] (extra/intel-ucode 20140624-1), and I get this when I check dmesg:

My question is, did the microcode update work? And should I add it to mkinitcpio to trigger it early? (sudo modprobe microcode doesn't change the output above).

  • [SOLVED] Intel microcode not loaded - already available in the bios?

I'm getting ready to the linux 3.17 release and thought I should manually install the Intel microcode.
I noticed that I didn't even have the package installed, so that was my first stop.
After doing the steps outlined in the wiki, I'm not sure it's actually loaded.
The `sig` and `revision` in the available patch and the kernel output is the same.
Does this mean I already have the microcodes updated through the BIOS, or is this irrelevant?
And if it's irrelevant, any idea what I'm doing wrong?
    $ uname -a

The initrd lines in grub.cfg has been changed (not showing entire config, but it's on each non-fallback initrd line)
(But this should matter yet anyway as I'm on 3.16..?)
    # grep intel /boot/grub/grub.cfg
    initrd /boot/intel-ucode.img /boot/initramfs-linux-ck.img
    initrd /boot/intel-ucode.img /boot/initramfs-linux.img
But iucode_tool says an update is available (ref: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Microcode)
    # bsdtar -Oxf /boot/intel-ucode.img | iucode_tool -tb -lS -

I don't know if it is the bios to update the microcode or your cpu has been shipped with the new firmware.
Thanks! I don't really care As long as I haven't failed the installation process, I'm happy.

  • XQuery Update implementation

    Hello,
is it possible to get prerelease of the next version of DBXML or at least the documentation focused on XQuery Update implementation.
    Thanks
    Mario

    Mario,
2.4 will be generally available quite soon. The Getting Started Guides in the documentation have sections on basic XQuery Update usage (replacing the old sections on XmlModify). The candidate recommendation is a detailed (if not user-friendly) source of information:

  • HELP, Intel Security Update, no reboot, grey screen of death

so I just downloaded the latest intel security update (i dont even remember the nomencalture) and now my revision A 2007 model macbook pro will not reboot.
It stays on the grey screen with the grey pinwheel.
I reset the PRAM, and nothing.
I took the battery out and held down the power button, and nothing.
so i put in Disc 1 of the instal disc, and started the reinstall process, but stopped because I was not sure if this would format the drive and i would lose everything. So i manually shut down the MBP, and now the I cannot eject the disc.
and it still stalls on the grey screen of death.
    please help !
    sincerely loneshark2000

    did that, too !
was able to get to Disk Utility, Verified the disk, Repaired the disk (no repairs were needed)
went to Start Up Disk, selected the hard drive, restarted, and still she gets stuck on the grey screen.
just got off the phone with mac support. and they recommended target disk mode to grab some of my necessary files. then to conduct a fresh install of the OS X, using archive and install. preserving user settings.
so i guess im off to the store to get a 6 pin to 6 pin.
ugh, what a dilema ! thanks for the reply Sig.

  • MSI Liveupdate3 Intel INF Update

As a new user, I will do my best to avoid revealing that I, in fact, know very little about PC's, and even less about motherboards.  Unfortunately for me, I recently decided to use MSI's Liveupdate3, and pretty much just downloaded and installed everything it had selected, being the amateur moron that I am.  This meant that I flashed the bios, and also downloaded and installed the Intel INF update under "live driver" that is version 5.00.1012.  Everything seems to be working fine (thank god, because after reading these forums I will never ever again flash my bios), except that now during boot up I get an odd "err" noise right after a beep.  A techie friend of mine didn't recognize the noise, nor did he feel that it was a problem.  However, the other change my system experienced after flashing the bios and the inf update was that it now thinks I am running a dual proc pc; which I am not (I will list specs at the bottom). I noticed this by looking in the "device manager" area.  Uninstalling one of the procs doesn't seem to help; when I boot up the 2nd is right back there.  Under the system information tab it also shows that there is two procs.  Also, (I hope I am saying this in a way you can understand due to my limited knowledge) under the system information tool, it seems like there is another of all the devices listed. (I wish I could paste my entire system information printout here).  My techie friend says that there seems to be a lot of resource sharing going on with copies of devices that obviously don't excist.  At first I was convinced that this all had to do with my flashing to the latest bios, but I think that it has to do with the Intel INF update. My techie friend says that he has a hunch that if I installed it again I would see three of everything.  I would really like to get my PC back to thinking that it only has one proc and isn't sharing all these non excistent devices, and then uninstall msi liveupdate and forget I was ever such an idiot.  I would really appreciate any kind of input; here or at my e-mail [email protected]
    Thank you for your time.
System Specs (homemade comp, listed as best as I know)
    Mobo: MSI Intel 875P Neo-FIS2R
    Bios version: 1.60
Intel INF version (from Liveupdate3): 5.00.1012
Proc: Intel p4 2.6 gigahertz FSB 800MHz HT enabled
Video card: Leadtek Winfast a310 Ultra TD (Geforce 5600 Ultra 128mb ddr)
Sound Card: Soundblaster Audigy 2 Platinum
Ram: 2 sticks Kingston Hyper X 512mb DDR
Case: Antec Plus 1000 Series 430W TruePower ATX12V
    Monitor: Viewsonic g220fb
    Speakers: Klipsch Promedia 5.1
Modem: Creative Modem Blaster v.92 PCI
Hard drive: Western Digital 120gig 7200rpm
DVD Drive: ATAPI DVD Rom 16x max
CDRW Drive: ATAPI MSI 52x max
    Operating System: Windows XP
    NO FLOPPY DRIVE

In device manager it lists that I have 3 mice (two HID-Compliant one PS/2 Compatabile), when I only have two; one wireless, one wired.  Under "Universal Serial Bus Controllers" it lists USB Root Hub 5 times.  Under "Human Interface Devices" it lists USB Human Interface Device 3 times. The USB devices I have connected currently are a gamepad and the receiver for my wireless logitech keyboard/mouse. Under "Monitors" it lists my Viewsonic g220fb, but then "default monitor" 3 times.  The only other display I have attached is a tv connected to the video out on my geforce 5600 Ultra.  Also, under the "Computer" tab it lists "ACPI Multiprocessor PC", which it should because of the Hyper Threading?
That is the double listings under device manager, which I see as less of a problem.  What seemed more vexing to my techie friend was what was listed under the system information tool.
Using the system information tool, this what I am seeing under "hardware resources". (I hope this is readable =(. it looks better in the text doc).

  • [SOLVED] Intel Microcode

I'm trying, but failing, to understand what is in https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Mi … de_Updates regarding intel microcode.
Should I actually do something manually? I use a pretty straight forward grub2 boot process and have not changed anything large since the move to systemd. Will the grub-mkconfig handle all this?

...though the current version of the grub package (1:2.02.beta2-5) incorporates the change in /etc/grub.d/10_linux:
    intel_ucode=
    if test -e "/boot/intel-ucode.img" ; then
    gettext_printf "Found Intel Microcode image\n" >&2
    intel_ucode="$(make_system_path_relative_to_its_root /boot/intel-ucode.img)"

  • [865PE/G Neo2 Series] Video stop working if I install Intel Inf update chipset software

    Hi,
     i have big problem    with my MS-6728 (865PE Neo2-S) and Geforce 4 Ti 4200.

If i remove Intel chipset (i tried all versions) - video is working good
Why Intel Inf update chipet drivers have conflict with my video card ?

    Hi,
i did as You say - remove Windows XP, format my HDD, installed again    Windows XP, installed Intel Inf update - system Ok
install video drivers - freeze and crush.
    Nothing help    ....
I found on this forum that some people have problem with video like me. they talk about bad agp port driver.....
What can i do now ?

  • Restart freeze after 2009 intel software update

Upon downloading the 2009 intel software update on my 1st gen black MacBook, I clicked restart, my desktop cleared and then froze. Now I'm out in the cold after clearing the PRAM I can't startup...all I get is the apple logo on the gray startup screen and nothing. I need to salvage my stuff. How do I do this? FYI: my startup disks are not with me.

Do you mean: Security Update 2009-001 (Tiger Intel)?
There's very little you can do without your installer discs. You can try to boot to Safe Mode and see if that works, or to Single User Mode and run fsk, but yours would be the first post where I would have seen this do anything in your particular situation. Included in the post below is a link to re-installing the
update from Single User Mode which is about the only thing I can think you can really hope will help until you get discs.
Two things seemed to be solutions for Security Update 2008-008 problems from what I have read, and may also work with 2009-01.
One is Archive and Install which will replace the corrupted system but then requires you reapply all your updates. Select the keep settings and preferences when doing A&I. Make sure you select that option when doing A&I if you want settings and preferences kept. Some third party applications may need reinstalling if they have special components.
[Mac OS X: About the Archive and Install feature|http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1710?viewlocale=en_US]

[How to get files from a previous home directory after Archive and Install|http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107297]
The other is to try to re-install the security update on the main drive while booted from a secondary drive or in Single User Mode. This could be from another Mac computer while your first one is in Target Disk Mode, perhaps a bootable backup drive, or possibly from your installer disc. Here's references for those methods:
    http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=8728797#8728797

    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=8634535#8634535
A version of this is to use Single User Mode and Terminal to re-install the update as in:
    http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=8991074#8991074
    Updating
Certain steps appear to minimize the risk of an update producing problems.
Number one is to make sure you have a clone backup of your computer in case you do need to back out of it again. This is the only guaranteed way of not having to worry about the results of an update.
Some like to boot from their installer discs or an external backup and verify (and if necessary repair) their internal drives as well as drive permissions. This is done with Disk Utility. You can verify a drive while booted from the same drive but sometimes this produces spurious errors. Repairing a drive (if necessary) has to be done while booted from another disk. Permissions repair can, and is probably best, done when booted from your internal drive.

You can also go to the step of booting into safe mode to do the install.

[Safe Boot takes longer than normal startup|http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107394]
I like to download the update onto my computer and install it from there rather than let Software Update do it. I know a few people who had problems with doing the update via software updater found a manual install to work.
    Repair permissions again afterward.
It also helps to only install one update at a time and to run the computer for a while to make sure it is behaving well.
The more cautious even like to unplug third party peripherals (see [comment by BDaqua|http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=9040746#9040746]).
Almost all of the above steps (except backup) have been questioned as to necessity because probably many people have done successful updates without doing them. I say they can't hurt, they can very likely do good (especially if your computer isn't regularly maintained), so why not do them to be safe.

  • P35 Platinum - Intel INF Update kills USB ports?

    Hi All,
I've just built a new system and when I ran the Intel INF Update from the driver cd that came with the motherboard it seemed to update everything fine, but when it re-booted the usb ports weren't working in Windows. Unfortunately both my keyboard and mouse are usb so I had no option but to re-install windows again (which wasn't such a big issue because I hadn't installed anything else yet). Should I bother trying to update them again from the latest versions online? Or as everything seems to be working fine as it is, should I just leave them be?

Hello, you need to wait a bit the USB devices to be re-detected.(just wait 1 min after you logon in windows).
If the drivers really broke the USB ports, reboot PC hit "F8" just after BIOS post(before OS booting) and choice "Last good known Configuration" from there. It will restore provisional working state.

OT: A simpler way to check if some packages are installed:
    $ pacman -Q intel-dri libgl foobar
    intel-dri 9.0-1
    libgl 9.0-1
error: package 'foobar' was not found
What's the output of 'groups'? Maybe you need to add yourself to 'video' group?

  • [SOLVED] Intel 7260 Vaio can't connect to wifi

    Hi there,
First off, I should mention that I know my way around Linux but I'm pretty new to Arch, so there might be things that I know that don't apply here.
So, I have this problem with this network, I can't connect to it and frankly I don't know why. I was on Ubuntu until a few days ago and I still had the problem. I posted on the Ubuntu forum >>here<< and I was told to upgrade, but as I've been willing to move to Arch for quite some time, I thought that was maybe the time. BUT, the problem is still there, which worries me.
To sum it up, about one or two weeks ago, I was connecting fine to this network (ZyXEL) and then after a reboot, no way to connect to it, no matter what I try. I have noticed an error message that keeps coming back all the time (see below) and the wifi indicator in i3status sometimes flashes me with an IP while I'm trying to connect then eventually the network disappears (not with wicd, only nm). Those are basically the symptoms.

I have had troubles with the wifi in the past (from what I read on the internet, this card is not yet fully supported everywhere) but nothing like this. Usually, disconnecting and reconnecting did the trick, sometimes I had to restart NetworkManager in extreme cases, but nothing more.
I tried a lot of things (modprobe, rfkill, firmware update, etc), rebooted everything I could but couldn't do anything. I have found bug reports and forums posts of similar problems but the solutions there either didn't work for me or the problem just seem to have disappeared for some people. I read that this card was not really supported before the kernel 3.11 or 3.13 but now I have 3.16 and it's still there. What's really bugging me is that I could successfully connect to this network a couple weeks ago...
On the Ubuntu forum, they have a script that displays useful information when posting about wireless problems. I have taken off the Ubuntu specific bits and I think this will save you some time asking me to run commands. One thing is not mentioned in the script: I use wicd.

I have the exact same problem, appeared completely random. I had several restarts this Christmas on the laptop, even after upgrades. I blamed the ath driver. But I noticed when I restart the router by plugging out it from the wall, then in again, sometimes it's working.
I carefully changed every possible settings in the router, then I found if I disable IPv6 (yes, it's capable of that despite Sky does not provide IPv6 service) it started to work even after multiple reboots. It took mi a while since the new year.
I'm using connman and when it was wrong, connman was completely frozen. If I entered "connmanctl scan wifi", it never quit. Same for "connmanctl state".
I also noticed that the router LED was blinking continuously and on the laptop when I checked the connection status with ifconfig it showed very high usage of TX packets. It also blocked the whole wifi, so my phone was not able to access the internet. Strange problem, I'm unsure what caused it and not quite sure how disabling IPv6 solved it. But I'm also afraid that maybe somewhere else I can't disable IPv6 on the router.

  • [SOLVED]Intel Xorg Fail

    Hi everyone,
I've found I can no longer start X (just a black screen, no cursor) on my Thinkpad X201 with Intel graphics. It was working fine earlier today (though I did update when this happened), and I've retraced anything I've changed as best I can, but with no luck.
I have no xorg.conf, but do have a 20-intel.conf in xorg.conf.d (I added this after the problem occurred), otherwise the machine starts looking for vesa drivers.
EDIT: Interestingly enough, root can start X fine, and I'm definitely in the video group. Creating another user and adding them to the video group, they are also able to start X.
SOLUTION: I'm a tool. To anyone else with this issue, comment out things in your .xinitrc until you find an offending entry. D'oh!

D'oh!
