[Solved] Missing icons in GTK apps?

I'm missing some icons in GTK2 apps. Fbpanel doesn't have any task icons, and Gaim doesn't have buddy icons. There might be more, but those are the ones I've noticed so far....
I just reinstalled Arch using the pacman -r method, so I think I missed some packages....
Also, although it doesn't belong here, what package provides the "killall" command? I need that one too...

Fixed it. Pacman -S gdk-pixbuf and all was well. I figured it out after looking at the X log and realizing I was getting pixbuf errors. Doh!

    Hey there.
When I first installed arch, x11, xmonad, and gtk, the fonts looked like crap on my screen too. I ran over a ~/.Xdefaults setup that included:
    ! Xft settings ---------------------------------------------------------------
    Xft.dpi: 96
    Xft.antialias: true
    Xft.rgba: rgb
    Xft.hinting: true
    Xft.hintstyle: hintslight
After restarting X, the ugly fonts were gone. I also switched the fonts used in gtk (using lxappearance) to the microsoft cleartype fonts (yeah yeah freedom hater). Don't forget you have to source ~/.Xdefaults from ~/.xinitrc like so:
    # make sure the X Defaults gets loaded
    xrdb ~/.Xdefaults
Also note, lxappearance is a great app for changing gtk+ themes.

Really, *most* of the problems that people find in Linux's fonts are just because they are used to the awful default fonts from Windows XP. Yes, people can even get used to those fonts and believe they're good!!! And when they see correct fonts in Linux they think they're bad...
What I would do is remove the MS TTF fonts. They work bad in Windows and worse in Linux. You should use Bitstream Vera or DejaVu if you want good quality fonts (especially in web pages).
But, then again, you might think that they look wrong just because you're not used to it... Oh, well...
What does correct font / correct spacing mean ?
IMO, that doesn't make any sense, because that's a totally subjective matter, like many other things in this world.
BTW, I love how fonts look in Windows, and I think that must be the only thing MS got right. Thus, I'm using ms fonts in linux, and a rendering as close as possible (no autohinting or antialiasing or subpixel rendering).
Similarly, I could find a woman beautiful that you would find ugly or just average. We are all different, and it's better that way

  • [KDE] I can't change the icons of gtk-apps

    Hi,
I'm able to change the theme of the gtk apps under KDE just fine. What I don't get to work is to change the icon theme, too. The gtk apps always use the default one.
    Her's what I have in my .gtkrc-2.0
    gtk-icon-theme-name="FaenzaCupertino"
    gtk-theme-name="oxygen-gtk"
    Any ideas?

I didn't read that the original Faenza Icon theme is needed, too. Now the next problem is that in Thunderbird the folders are brown and don't use the blue look.
You are on to something here. The key is what GTK engine you are using: oxygen-gtk. That engine has a special hack to apply KDE icons to GTK applications. What it does is actually set gtk-theme-name on the fly, your gtkrc file doesn't matter.
And here is the bug; KDE uses icons from ~/.kde4/share/icons but where does GTK try to find your theme? In ~/.icons. The solution is to symlink your icon theme from ~/.kde4/share/icons to ~/.icons.

  • [SOLVED] Why do some GTK apps refuse to change appearance?

I have some gtk applications like Brasero, Nautilus etc. that do not follow lxappearance config in "~/gtk-3.0/setting.ini" and ".gtkrc-2.0"
    gtk-theme-name="ThinIce"
    gtk-icon-theme-name="Tango"
    gtk-font-name="Sans 10"
    gtk-cursor-theme-name="Adwaita"
    gtk-cursor-theme-size=0
    gtk-toolbar-style=GTK_TOOLBAR_ICONS
    gtk-toolbar-icon-size=GTK_ICON_SIZE_SMALL_TOOLBAR
    gtk-button-images=0
    gtk-menu-images=0
    gtk-enable-event-sounds=1
    gtk-enable-input-feedback-sounds=1
    gtk-xft-antialias=1
    gtk-xft-hinting=1
    gtk-xft-hintstyle="hintfull"
pcmanfm however does work fine and correctly uses icons/themes, while others do use some default icons and pretty ugly theme.
    Why is so?
    Last edited by tasty_minerals (2011-09-16 11:55:10)

pcmanfm and pidgin use gtk2, brasero and nautilis gtk3. lxappearance sets correctly gtk2 and fails at gtk3 as said before. GT2 and GTK3 configs are not the same. GTK3 is backwars compatible IIRC meaning you can use your gtk3 theme for gtk2 apps but not viceversa.
Seems that something in your gtk3 config is wrong ¿Are you using a gtk2 theme for gtk3?

  • Missing icons i Launchpad - apps don't work

    Hello,
Yesterday i discovered that i am missing alot of my icons in Launchpad:
When i open any of the apps that doesn't have an icon, it launches, but i can't do anything. It won't open any documents in PDF-viewer and iBooks instantly stops working. It happened after i upgraded to Mavericks, if it has any relevans. I've looked at several forums, and it seems that I am not the only one with this problem. However, most people fix this by deleting a certain file and using a command in Terminal, but the app isn't working becauase of this problem.. I can open the Terminal, but there's no option for typing in commands.
I hope someone can help me with this problem.
    Thank you in advance.

    HI appleuser1993,
I don't know if this will help you but I experienced something similar to your issue. I had also many icons missed in the LaunchePad, it was after a clen with Clean my Mac wich did its job perhaps in a excess of zeal.
I had to go to App in the Finder and copy all apps to the LaunchePad and then, my Apps icons are back again.

  • How to: Fixing missing icons in gtk applications

I'm posting this for others to stumble upon, since the other threads covering this problem are already closed or very old, and none of them answer the question sufficiently.
Upon updating a few days ago, I lost all icons in some gtk applications, for example nautilus and evince (side by side on this screenshot):
I searched through the forums and google and found several suggested solutions:
    Reinstalling librsvg
    Reinstalling gtk-update-icon-cache
    Running /usr/bin/gdk-pixbuf-query-loaders --update-cache as root
None of these things made any difference for me, not even after rebooting. You can try them, but what finally made things work for me was:
Install any other icon theme, e.g. oxygen-icons
Use lxappearance/gtk-theme-switch2 or manually edit .gtkrc-2.0 to change the icon theme to the newly installed one
Open one of the affected gtk applications - Most of the icons will be shown
Change the icon theme back to whatever you had before (GNOME/hicolor in my case)
Now all the icons in evince/nautilus seem fixed and you can uninstall the other icon theme
There must be a more straight-forward method, but /usr/bin/gdk-pixbuf-query-loaders --update-cache is not it and at least this method worked for me.

Add this line in your .gtkrc-2.0:
    gtk-toolbar-style=GTK_TOOLBAR_TEXT
    Edit...
Mental note: read more carefully before post
Yes, is GTK_TOOLBAR_ICONS instead of GTK_TOOLBAR_TEXT.

  • [SOLVED] Bug with GTK apps - Icons didn't render correctly

    Hello.
I had been experiencing a strange behaviour of GTK apps at one of my arch systems lately - Icons didn't render correctly (screens attached).
It was not critical for work but frustrating enough. Especially in firefox (notice the half-rendered formulas).
It took me quite some time to figure out that this behaviour was caused by a line
    "Xft.rgba:1 "
in my .Xdefaults config. After I commented it out the bug disappeared.
Qt apps were not affected by this.
Besides, on my second arch system it didn't cause any trouble.
So, I'm not sure whether it is a bug or not.
If it is, I'm not sure whether the problem is on my side, in package or upstream.
I've decided to post it just in case somebody experience something similar.
    Libs versions are:
    gtk2 2.24.22-1
    gtk3 3.10.6-1
    gtkmm 2.24.4-1
    gtkmm3 3.10.0-1
The bug was also present in:
    gtk2 2.24.20-1
    gtk3 3.8.2-1
    gtkmm 2.24.4-1
    gtkmm3 3.8.1-1

Thanks for the replies guys! For the record it's when I click a window in say lxterminal or pidgin it opens in firefox. I'll take a look through the links you posted and see if I can get it working!

  • Downloaded Icons for purchased apps missing

    Hi,
    (first problem)
I have an iPad 2 with ios4 and an iTouch with ios5. Both have the same problem.
When I download an App from iTunes on either machine, I am successful in
purchasing and downloading Apps generally. However, the icons never show
up in any window on either machine. They used to show up as the last icon
on the last screen. But no more.
However, if I search for them I do find them and can launch and use them. I do
have a lot of icons on both the iPad and iTouch so maybe I've just "used up"
all the space available for icons?
    (second problem)
This problem is related to the first problem above, in that I want to remove an
App because I "bought" this free app while signed into another of my Apple IDs.
And it will not let me subscribe to the SCIENCE ILLUSTRATED magazine.
Soooo, I try to remove the App to purchase it again. The catch is that there is no
icon on any of my screens, I have to "search" for it to find it. And in the search
screen there is no way to delete this app.
So, I have to delete this app and re-purchase this "free" app so I can subscribe
to SCIENCE ILLUSTRATED.... grrrrrrrr........this is so stupid......
    (summary)
I think I could solve both problems if I could figure out where my missing icons
are. They are not in directories by the way.
    Thanks for any suggestions!

    Have you tried a reset?
Press and hold the Home button and the Wake / Sleep buttons at the same time, keep them both pressed until the Apple logo appears on the screen.
If that does not work, then restore the iPhone, but do not restore the backup as it may be a files that is restored in the backup that is causing the problem. If you do that you will have to set up the iPhone again from scratch.

  • [KDE] Icon theme in some GTK+ apps is stuck to Oxygen

I've been trying to figure out what my problem is for a few days now... For some reason, when I try to change the icon theme to anything besides Oxygen for GTK apps when I'm using the oxygen-gtk theme, it doesn't change. But if I switch to a theme such as Raleigh, it uses my icon theme.
The icon theme I am trying to set is KFaenza. I also tried Faenza-Cupertino, using Faenza as a fallback, but that didn't work either.
I saw this topic, which is almost my exact issue. This didn't help either.
I tried multiple tweaks to my .gtkrc-2.0, such as commenting out the theme name, the first "include" (that sets my theme to oxygen-gtk), and commenting out the fallback icon theme line. None of these work.
I also tried putting the icon themes in /usr/share/icons, which didn't help.
I am using the System Settings module to set my GTK+ theme. I have an up-to-date system (just reinstalled a couple of days ago).
Currently I am using an unmodified gtkrc created by System Settings.
Hopefully all this info helps, and thanks in advance for any answers!
UPDATE: I just installed gconf-editor to see if I could fix anything in there. It just turns out that gconf-editor is obeying my settings and this is a problem with Chromium and not GTK.
UPDATE #2: I also installed Firefox and it is also not obeying my settings.

Copy the icon theme folder to /usr/share/icons
(ex. if your icon theme folder's name is Oxygen-Refit, it should be at /usr/share/icons/Oxygen-Refit)
Then edit ~/.gtkrc-2.0-kde and add the line baghera suggested. It works here.
Note that you need to do this to .gtkrc-2.0 (yes, thats without -kde) too if you don't use gtk-qt-engine to change gtk themes.
Also note that every time you change the gtk theme (either via systemsettings or via 3rd party utility) this line is autoremoved from the corresponding file(s).
Finally, make sure you close the gtk app you want the change to be shown and reopen it. All newly opened gtk apps should show the change.
