[SOLVED] My Laptop won't hibernate

Hi all,
I'm a new user to Arch, really liking it thus far, great learning curve.
So far managed to solve all problems I've encountered except for one, and that is to get my laptop to hibernate.
I've got a Compaq Presario CQ60 laptop which is running Arch Linux 32-bit with Gnome 3 Shell and every attempt I make hibernate seems to fail. When I try and hibernate my laptop it seems to do something for a moment as the screen goes blank with a cursor in the top left and it looks like theres some hard drive activity during the black screen, the laptop then powers off as expected but on booting back into Arch it just boots as if it was started from a shutdown.
I've been reading the Wiki page about hibernation in Arch (https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Pm … nd2disk.29) and have followed all the guidelines. I have installed acpi, pm-utils, upower as well as made sure there is resume paramater on my linux line in GRUB2
Here are my configs below:
fdisk:
Disk /dev/sda: 500.1 GB, 500107862016 bytes

Despite hibernate not working, suspend is OK.
Hope someone can help me solve my problem! I did search around for answer before writing this thread!
Thanks,
James

You also need to include 'resume' in the HOOKS array in /etc/mkinitcpio.conf. Then you need to recreate the initramfs image by running 'mkinitcpio -p kernel26' as root. After doing these additional modifications, the laptop should be able to resume from disk.

Have you configured the files in /etc/hibernate to your setup?
You must set 'SuspendDevice swap:/dev/sda8' (substitute with your swap partition), 'UseTuxOnIce yes' in tuxonice.conf and 'TryMethod tuxonice.conf' in disk.conf. Also, take a look at common.conf.
Additionally, you must edit your /etc/mkinitcpio.conf to add the 'resume' hook (before 'filesystems'). There are some more steps, read the wiki on TuxOnIce and linux-pf.
    [EDIT]
Your system seems to have tried to hibernate and failed; perhaps with <Alt-F#> (# being your X tty) you'll be back at your desktop. If that's the case, post your relevant dmesg output, it might shed some light.

  • Laptop won't wake up after closing lid

The laptop won't wake up after closing the lid. It hasn't happened before. There have been no updates or changes for a day or two. The power button light and the fan are on, the caps lock key is flashing, and the wireless light is orange instead of white, like it is when powered up. I have tried ctrl-alt-del, every fn key, the esc key, the pause key, and every comination of keys that made any sense and many that didn't. I tried disconnecting the power, removing the battery and holding the power button for 30 seconds. I tried leaving the battery out while disconnected from power for 24 hours. I have looked at different forums for clues, but haven't found any help.
My next step will be to remove the hard drive to get the data, so any help would be GREATLY appreciated.

My one and half year old Hp 2000 laptop won't boot at all. When I press the power button, it doesn't show any sign of life at all.
I have tried Hard test several times yet it didn't fix it.

  • I just upgraded my operating system on my MacBook Air and now my laptop won't detect my Toshiba 1T external hard drive

I just upgraded my operating system on my MacBook Air and now my laptop won't detect my Toshiba 1T external hard drive, how to solve this problem?

Try some of the troubleshooting steps outlined below:
    Troubleshooting an external hard drive
    > Unplug the hard drive, wait a few seconds, and then plug it back in
    > Restart the computer
    > Unplug any other peripherals from the computer
    > Plug it into a different USB port
If none of those steps work, see if it is recognized in Disk Utility.
Checking a disk with Disk Utility
To check a disk using Disk Utility, launch the Disk Utility application in any of the following ways:
    > Type the first few letters of its name into Spotlight. Select it from the results.
    > Go Launchpad > Utilities > Disk Utility
    > Go Applications > Utilities > Disk Utility
Once Disk Utility is opened, check to see if your external HD appears on the sidebar. If it doesn't appear at first, try the troubleshooting steps above again while leaving Disk Utility open, each time checking to see if the external HD appears.

  • My S10 laptop won't charge?

Hi. I am new to the forums, so if I did it in the wrong section sorry :-)
A,right, so my laptop won't charge. Sometimes it does, and sometimes it doesn't. I checked my battery and my charger, they are both OK. However, I cannot buy chargers/ batteries here in Lebanon, since they don't have them for old laptops. (5 years old)
How can I fix this? It is not burned. I tried updating the drivers, etc. Nothing works
Pease don't tell me I have to buy a new laptop

    Hello @James5 ,
To get your issue more exposure I would suggest posting it in the commercial forums since this is a commercial product. You can do this at Commercial Forums.
Even though this is a Commercial product, try performing a hard reset.
When performing a hard reset please note remove any and all USB devices. Disconnect all non-essential devices.
Here is a link to test and calibrate the battery. Have you tried a different AC cord?
Plug the power adapter directly into a functioning wall outlet. Do not plug it into a power strip, surge protector, or secondary power source as this could cause and issue.
    Thanks.

i have recent download icloud and it works perfectly if i want to send pictures from my ipad to my laptop (which is windows 7) however my laptop won't send the pictures to my ipad, how can i solve this problem?

    Hey there Christina,
It sounds like you are not able to see your iPad in iTunes so you cannot sync it anymore to this one computer, but the other computer recognizes it without issue. I would use the following article to help resolve the issue with iTunes on the computer:

  • Laptop won't boot, will not do a windows repair, received a hdd error 0303.

laptop won't boot, will not do a windows repair, received a hdd error 0303.

    Hi,
The error code is a short Disk Self Test failure and would indicate that the Hard Drive is failing and needs to be replaced.  This is also consistent with the start-up issue.
If your notebook is still under warranty, contact HP and arrange to have the drive replaced - you can check your warranty status Here.
If you live in the US, contact HP Here.
If you are in another part of the world, start Here.
If you are out of warranty and would like a guide on replacing the Hard Drive yourself, please let me know - include the full Model No. and Product No. of the notebook - see Here for a further explanation.

  • My scrollbar on my mouse pad on my laptop won't work since I downloaded the 4.0 version. I tried what some other people tried but I still can't get it to work. What can I do to fix it?

I just download the 4.0 version and my scroll pad on my laptop won't work. I have to use my arrow keys or the side bar on the side. The scroll pad works with Internet Explorer and anywhere else just not with Firefox's newest version.

This one is easy. The shortcut is for the old iTunes, that is why it won't work.
I assume you are using Windows.
If so, go to the bottom left of your screen and click the start button. Go up to programs and hold your cursor over it. A list of all your programs should pop up to the right. Move the curso over to iTunes. There should be an "about iTunes" and an iTunes logo there. Right click on the iTunes logo and click create shortcut (you can also just drag it out to your desktop). That will give you a desktop shortcut for your new version.

I have joined many forums in my short computer life. This is by far the best forum that I have been a part of. It really up sets me when people come on here and complain before they have even given any of the staff or advisors a chance to help them with their problem. What can I do if my Windows 7 or Vista laptop won't start.

This is a great tutorial. Step by step to get your PC up and running and a lot more.Seriosly, if you can't follow this tutorial, you shouldn't have a computer. There will times when this won't work and you will have hardware problems. There are some great people here on the forum that can help you find those problems also. I have tried all these recovery options; they work, and I love my Toshiba laptop. That's why I donate my time to help and that's why others here donate their time. Hi!! You should try the recovery feature in W7. Some times it can be accessed through safe mode. On my model it's easier to use the system repair disc. You can find out how to create that here.
    http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/Create-a-system-repair-disc
You can learn how to use the system repair disc here.

These are basic things you need to know if your going to own a Toshiba laptop.
PS Some day I'm going to convince staff to make a sticky of these things; which would cut their work in half, but then I wouldn't have any thing to do.
Here's what the recovery looks like. You have 5 options to help you. The Dos option can really help if you are familiar with Dos. In Dos you can do a chkdsk---sfc /scannow--- and a whole lot more. Start with the Repair option first and work your way down.

  • Laptop won't turn on

I was trying to do a secure delete on my Apple, but I couldn't figure out how. So I just started throwing everything in the trash.
Now my laptop won't turn on when I press the power button. Should I get an Apple restore disc?
What should I do? How do I fix this problem???

    Hi,
    Welcome to Apple Discussions
One easy way of secure deleting, or deleting in general (use mostly when delete a large number of files) is to put all the files in one folder (just create a random folder in Finder) > Press Control (ctrl) and click on the folder > Go down to move to Trash (in the popup menu) > Go to Finder > Secure Empty or Empty Trash.
Did you delete the files or did it just shut off? What exactly were you deleting? Languages, fonts; anything like that? You may want to look at Knowledge Base Document #106214 on Troubleshooting Startup Issues. Do you get any sounds or flashes of light (from the "sleep" light)? You may want to try booting up in Safe Mode (Knowledge Base Document #107393 on How to Startup In Safe Mode), or with the install discs.
