[Solved] Network problem, unable to ping, dhcpcd issue
Friends:
Issue on hand.
I upgraded Arch which is running as guest inside VirtualBox.
When machine boots up I don't have access to network.
I cant ping yahoo or google or any site.
The following steps work for regaining network access back
cat /run/dhcpcd.pid
180
kill -2 180
dhcpcd
now ping yahoo.com works fine
So not sure why this problem.
I am willing to put out any log information. I don't know what to look for.
Please help.

I'm not sure where the idea to get the pid to kill dhcpcd came from - it seems a very roundabout way of doing the following
# killall dhcpcd
# dhcpcd <interfacename>
However this is a bit beside the point. dhcpcd looks like it is starting from a dhcpcd .service file and failing there. When you restart it, you do so without specifying any interface name and it works. This suggests to me that the service file is using a interface name, and an incorrect one at that.
This is all just suspicion to be verified:
1) you have [email protected] enabled
2) you have "predictable interface names" ... which ironically means I can't predict what they'd be, but it would start with something like enpS***.
If correct, there are three possible solutions (choose only one):
1) revise the service to not specify an interface,
2) revise the service to specify the correct interface which you can determine from the output of `ip link`
3) use the udev rule to keep "old" style interface naming.
(edit: as an aside, I had the same reaction as WW to the "please help" in the title)

qHow do u get help from apple support with iChat? I was able to chat with support last week to solve my problem but now the same issue is back and I don't see the option to chat now?
For what it is worth I have noticed a similar issue from the iPad3 while at work and home. At work we have two Apple TV 3rd Generation installed and tied to our A/V system. I believe the issue has to do with a timeout on the broadcast saying "here I am" and allowing devices to connect.
For example:
At work we have several Wi-Fi SSID being broadcast from Cisco APs. The only one we can use with the Apple TV is the one that uses a WEP since the others are either setup to be hidden, require web page authentication, or have a login requirement from employees. Essentially, what I believe the issue is that the Apple TV periodically broadcasts a message to other iOS devices that support Mirroring. When the Apple TV does not get a response from a device it goes into a dormant mode and requires either a command from the remote control or a reboot. This has been tested with both the power management enabled and not enabled with the same results.
As for when I come home, the Apple TV3 has not seen the device in some time and therefore is not broadcasting it's location information. A simple click of the circle or menu keys on the remote will give it the command to start broadcasting again and allow the iPad3 to see the Apple TV. When trying to Home Share the computer can not play (iTunes 11, Win8RTM) until the Apple TV is awoken then it will show up for mirroing.
This may or may not assist you but, it hopefully explains how the issue may be happening. -
[Solved] Network problems installing Arch
Hello everyone. I'm trying to install archlinux-2013-03-01 and I can't get to even start the installing process due to network problems.
I'm using a wired connection with DHCP but when I ping google or something it gives me the 'bad address' error (not the 'unknown host' error). I typed 'dmesg | grep r8169' (r88169 is the module for my Gigabit Ethernet driver) and the output says it's loaded, so it's not a kernel module problem.
If I type 'ip link' it says my interface is called eth0. So then I type 'ip link set eth0 up' and it says is up but again, I can't ping anything.
If I nslookup something it gives me my home address.
I even tryed to load the .iso with the option ipv6.disable=1 and still nothing.
Any help will be appreciated, thank you.
Last edited by babel (2013-04-05 14:43:42)Thank you both for your responses.
I thought this was weird too, but I can't see any interface with the new network device naming scheme. According to the wiki I must have an interface called something like epn2so but if I type 'ip link' I only see:
1: lo: <LOOPBACK> [some more info]
2: eth0: <BROADCAST, MULSTICAST, UP, LOWER_UP> [some more info]
link/ethernet [my mac address] brd ff:ff:ff:ff:ff:ff
I think eth0 is the right name because if I type 'ip link set eth0 up' it gives me no errors and I can see ...UP, LOWER_UP> when I type 'ip link'.
@WonderWoofy: I don't have any Ip address when I type 'ip addr'. I don't know what could it be. This is the first time I have issues "configuring" internet with DHCP and believe me, I've tried hundreds of different distros and configurations.
PS: I wrote [some more info] because it's kind of a pain in the ass copy exactly all the output due to I can't ctrl + c anything in the installing procees. Should I copy the output of any particular command so you guys can see it? Thank you. -

Additional info:
I have connected 2 PCs with LAN (Ethernet) cable and want configure them for exchanging files. Both running Arch Linux. I am following the Network Configuration wiki page from the beginning. Didn't have luck with DHCP/dynamic IP, so trying Static IP this time. Restarting the pc with network.service enabled results in same error (in systemctl --failed). Same error message on both PCs.
Trying to run ExecStart lines one by one:
$ sudo /sbin/ip link set dev lan up
$ sudo /sbin/ip addr add 192.168.1.2/24 dev lan
RTNETLINK answers: File exists
$ sudo /sbin/ip route add default via 192.168.1.1
RTNETLINK answers: File exists
Does this mean there already is IP address and route assigned? If so, how to find out which service has done that? Do I need to remove it? Am I following the right wiki page (didn't find another)?
What am I doing wrong and how can I correct this error? / Point me in right direction.

have you checked if the network file exists?
Oh thanks, that line was causing problems! Now I do have network.service(s) running on both PC's with this content:
[Unit]
Description=Connect to my desktop/laptop
Wants=network.target
Before=network.target
BindsTo=sys-subsystem-net-devices-lan.device

ExecStop=/sbin/ip addr flush dev lan
ExecStop=/sbin/ip link set dev lan down
[Install]
WantedBy=multi-user.target
I don't get any errors, and this is network's status (on both PCs) when cable is connected
$ sudo systemctl restart network
$ systemctl status network
network.service - Connect to my desktop
Loaded: loaded (/etc/systemd/system/network.service; disabled)
Active: active (exited) since Thu 2013-04-04 22:43:22 AMT; 8s ago

Process: 9764 ExecStart=/sbin/ip link set dev lan up (code=exited, status=0/SUCCESS)
And here wiki page is no more help. How can I test connection?
I try to ping, and it works on both machines (if it's the right thing to test?)
$ ping -c3 192.168.1.2

Networking problems / VNC no ping reply
Hi,
I'm trying to vnc between my macs. Server is a MBP and the client is a G5 iMac. Basically I can see the server in the server list on the client (JollyfastVNC) but when I go to connect it spends ages working out what to do...
I tried to ping the server and there's no response. I've checked and the firewall is turned off on both machines. The server can ping the client no problem but the other way round doesn't work.
Any ideas?A couple of questions:
(1) Are the computers on the same subnet, or is one at a remote location and you are traversing the internet at large?
(2) Did VNC ever work for you between these two machines before upgrading one or both to 10.4.11 and/or 10.5?
(3) Are you using the built-in vnc server capability in the MBP's Sys Prefs' | Sharing (in 10.4.10, where I'm at, you need ARD enabled in the services panel and VNC created and enabled in the firewall panel on the server machine, at least when the firewall is enabled -- but even tho' your firewall is off, I'm betting you still need some stuff set up in the MBP's Sys Prefs | Sharing | Services | ARD | Access Privileges), or are you using a third party server app?
(4) What IP address/subnet mask/gateway does the MBP's Sys Prefs | Network | TCP/IP have? If on the same residential(?) LAN, how does that compare to what the iMac has? How is the network address space defined in the router (router's 192.168.x.x address, subnet, DHCP address range, DHCP enabled/disabled)? -
[Solved] Network problems with MSI GX60 Destroyer, killer newtork LAN and wireless
Hi, I bought a MSI GX60 Destroyer 2 weeks ago, and I realized that my internet was a little slow, you don't realize in the web but when downloading it doesn't perform how it should, I tested the speed now with wireless and I got 5 mb/s, and I have 20 mb/s in my house (I also tested with cellphones and other pc's), with LAN the speed was normal, so I saw some forums about the Killer network, I tried to change the drivers but nothing, the wireless is limited to 5 mb/s and now my LAN too.... please help, my phone has 4x better internet than my GAMING Laptop.
Also the Atheros drivers are a pain in the ass it's really hard to remove them.
I'm now with the drivers without the Management app.Quote from: hch;109858
Hi Tzin,
Which graphics driver are you using?
The quick stream is installed on the notebook with the generic graphics driver from the AMD website.
If you install the AMD's generic graphics driver, you'll find the quick stream program in your Uninstall programs window.(Control Panel> Uninstall a program)
Hi hch , i only can find the "amd cystal manager " under the unintall a program , so when i click into in then only saw the device but dont see the quick stream . -
Comcast just replaced my cable modem/wireless router. All devices connect properly except my iPhone 4. It shows itself to be connected to the network, but it does not load any web page. Resetting the iPhone does not solve the problem. Any suggestions?
Thank you for your response.
I had rebooted the router (several times, actually), to no avail.
I do not know the answer to whether MAC filtering is enabled on the router. Have tried to find info about that, but unsuccessfully. Router is an Arris TG852G, supplied by Comcast. I would be surprised if MAC filtering were the issue, since in addition to the computer, we have successfully connected several other devices to the wifi, namely an iPad, a Android phone and a Kindle Fire - all able to access internet pages through the wifi, and all without a need to add the device to a MAC address whitelist. To add to the mystery, the Comcast tech was able to connect his iPhone 4 to my network and access web pages. He was unable to connect my iPhone, however, after trying for some time.
I seem to recall reading somewhere that an iPhone cannot connect to a wireless "n" router, only "b" or "g". The Arris router is described as a n/g/b compliant router, and as noted the Comcast tech was able to connect his iPhone, so don't know why that would be the issue here.
By the way, my iPhone does connect wirelessly to my network at home. This difficulty is at a second home.
Any other thoughts would be appreciated. -
How to solve unable to connect ipad issue
Has anyone been able to solve the unable to connect to network issue?
Some things to try first:
1. Turn Off your iPad. Then turn Off (disconnect power cord for 30 seconds or longer) the wireless router & then back On. Now boot your iPad. Hopefully it will see the WiFi.
2. Go to Settings>Wi-Fi and turn Off. Then while at Settings>Wi-Fi, turn back On and chose a Network.
3. Change the channel on your wireless router (Auto or Channel 6 is best). Instructions at http://macintoshhowto.com/advanced/how-to-get-a-good-range-on-your-wireless-netw ork.html
4. Go into your router security settings and change from WEP to WPA with AES.
5. Renew IP Address: (especially if you are droping internet connection)
• Launch Settings app
• Tap on Wi-Fi
• Tap on the blue arrow of the Wi-Fi network that you connect to from the list
• In the window that opens, tap on the Renew Lease button

Hi!
I've got very unpleasant issue with my IPhone 4s, it can automaticaly turn on the 3G even if my local mobile operator does not have 3G coverage.
I hate it, 'cause my battery dies in a couple of hours. How can I solve this problem. It is very annoying. I just thinking about jailing!!!
Thanks in advance.There are NO carriers that legitimately offer the iPhone in Ukraine according to this list: http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1937
I'm not talking about carriers that support 3G, I'm talking about AUTHORIZED iPhone carriers. There is NO SUPPORT available for iPhones on networks other than those who are authorized BY APPLE to carry the iPhone.
The iPhone should work with any compatible GSM carrier. If your carrier is not on the list I linked to, you will have to work with them to resolve any problems. There is nothing else anyone can do for you. -
I rent a movie on iTunes stores, downloading it to my iPad2, but during the movie, the reading stop from capter 10 to End. I try to restart it, but an alert message inform me that i cannot read the movie. What is the issue for solve this problem? The movie is still located on apps movie, but i cannot read it. Please help.
Having the same problem. Watched 25 minutes of a rental and it stopped with the message"unable to load video"
Using current version IPad mini.

[SOLVED] Problem with netctl and dhcpcd
Hi everybody,
I had a problem with netctl and dhcpcd.
I was using netctl and wifi-menu to connect to wirelless networks with dhcp.
It worked fine at home, then i went to a friend where it also worked but then i went back home and it failed at every try with those error messages:
dhcpcd[2718]: version 6.0.5 starting
dhcpcd[2718]: wlp9s0: rebinding lease of 192.168.1.154
dhcpcd[2718]: wlp9s0: reject NAK via 192.168.178.1
dhcpcd[2718]: wlp9s0: soliciting a DHCP lease
dhcpcd[2718]: wlp9s0: offered 192.168.178.44 from 192.168.178.1
dhcpcd[2718]: timed out
network[2659]: DHCP IP lease attempt failed on interface 'wlp9s0'
systemd[1]: netctl@wlp9s0\xxx.service: main process exited, code=exited, status=1/FAILURE
systemd[1]: Failed to start Automatically generated profile by wifi-menu.
systemd[1]: Unit [email protected] entered failed state.
I figured that dhcpcd tried to rebind an ip that my router rejected and didn't accept the ip that it offered instead.
The solution was to delete:
/var/lib/dhcpcd/dhcpcd-wlp9s0.lease
now how can i configure netctl and or dhcpcd so that won't happen again and that it accepts all ips offered by routers?
Last edited by Samy (2013-09-04 13:32:13)I've had this happen now and again. You can rebind the lease yourself with:
$ dhcpcd --rebind
You could also try increasing the timeout by adding
TimeoutDHCP=
to your netctl profile/s - see netctl.profile(5) as WonderWoofy suggests. Although I haven't tried the latter.

Hi, when ever I'm using 3G, on my Iphone4 sim stops working and network is lost, this started after I updated my phone with 6.0.1(10A523)version. Please help how to solve this problem. Thanks.
Photos/videos in the Camera Roll are not synced. Photos/videos in the Camera Roll are not touched with the iTunes sync process. Photos/videos in the Camera Roll can be imported by your computer which is not handled by iTunes. Most importing software includes an option to delete the photos/videos from the Camera Roll after the import process is complete. If is my understanding that some Windows import software supports importing photos from the Camera Roll, but not videos. Regardless, the import software should not delete the photos/videos from the Camera Roll unless you set the app to do so.
Photos/videos in the Camera Roll are included with your iPhone's backup. If you synced your iPhone with iTunes before the videos on the Camera Roll went missing and you haven't synced your iPhone with iTunes since they went missing, you can try restoring the iPhone with iTunes from the iPhone's backup. Don't sync the iPhone with iTunes again and decline the prompt to update the iPhone's backup after selecting Restore. -
