[SOLVED]NFS Daemons broke Rc.conf - Arch unbootable

Hello everyone,
I've tried to share a partition with NFS and followed the steps using the ArchWiki (http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Nfs).
Following the point "deamons" I added
/etc/rc.d/rpcbind
/etc/rc.d/nfs-common
/etc/rc.d/nfs-server
to my /etc/rc.conf - however I have forgotten to put "start" behind each command.
Now Arch won't boot, the FallBack function isn't working, too.
How can i edit the rc.conf file?

Okay, solved it by my own following these steps, booting from the Arch CD:
mkdir /mnt/celtic #create a mount point
mount /dev/sd3 /mnt/celtic # mount partition: change /dev/sda3 with the name of partition where you installed root (/)...
cd /mnt/celtic/etc # move to /etc
nano rc.conf #edit your rc.conf

  • Unable to start MPD as a daemon in rc.conf

    For some reason, MPD is unable to start as a daemon listed in rc.conf. I have tried running it as a background also and no go. MPD goes after ALSA, so I don't know what else is missing.
    Also, I cannot start mpd as root after logging in immediately after my system boots up. It just tells me it fails.
    However, I can start MPD after I log-in as a normal user and su into root, then manually typing /etc/rc.d/mpd start.
    Could it be that it is unable to find my music database during its attempt to start as a daemon in rc.conf? (because my music directory is in an NTFS partition, which is not listed in fstab because it is automatically mounted by hal)
    Could it be that I set "user" in /etc/mpd.conf as "mpd" that it is unable to start it as root?
    What could be the culprit?

    Yup. MPD works and plays my music. It just wont start up as a daemon, but I know why now.
    The place where my music is located (/dev/sdb2) is an NTFS partition which isn't mounted by the time I get to the login prompt. This is because it is automounted AFTER i log-in a user account in which HAL automounts that drive.
    Adding an entry in FSTAB and not relying on automount by HAL solves the problem because now when I start it as a daemon, it can actually find my music library.

    Hi. I've been using Arch Linux for around 6 months now and I'm in love with it. It is now my primary OS. However, I might have done something or performed some update, and I can no longer boot into Arch. The boot process hangs right before it should show the login screen (I'm using Gnome 3.6 with GDM). I see the following messages on the screen:

    And then it hangs right there. I have to hard-reboot after this.
    I then tried to boot using the Arch Linux Installation USB (archlinux-2012.12.01-dual.img), which also hangs at a particular point, before it should show me the prompt. I took a picture of the screen where it hangs: Screen Capture. This is an issue with just my laptop, because the USB boots just fine on another laptop I tried.
    I also have Windows 7 and Ubuntu 12.10 installed on my system, and I'm able to boot into both of them.
    I have 2 hard drives: /dev/sda is a 120GB SSD, and /dev/sdb is a 500GB hard disk. My partitions are as follows:
    sda1 - Windows 7 100MB System Reserved Partition (boot flag enabled)
    sda2 - Windows 7 OS
    sda3 - ArchLinux (boot flag enabled)
    sdb1 - Ubuntu 12.10 (boot flag enabled)
    sdb2 - Just data

    I tried adding nomodeset and acpi=off to the boot parameters, but the boot process still hangs. Please let me know if I should provide any other information.

    Ok.. So my Arch Linux randomly decided to work. I'm sure I didn't do anything between my last "not working" state and my current "working" state. Below are a few things I tried:
    I thought of trying an earlier build of ArchLinux, and downloaded archlinux-2012.11.01-dual.iso and made a bootable USB out of it. It still hung.
    I was getting error messages during Arch boot that the last access time for the disks was at a future date. I found out that Ubuntu was using localtime instead of UTC and screwing up my hardware clock. I fixed it, and thought maybe the time issues were causing the boot problem. But fixing time didn't solve my problem.
    I chrooted into Arch from my Ubuntu install, ran 'sudo pacman -Syyu' and updated my Arch install.
    I thought maybe GDM isn't starting up. I re-enabled the service using 'systemctl enable gdm.service'.
    I removed OpenNTPd and installed NTPd. Enabled the daemon using 'systemctl enable ntpd'
    None of the above solved the problem, and rebooting to Arch still hung the system. So I stopped fiddling with it yesterday. Today, as usual, I just tried logging into Arch.. And it just worked out of the blue. The solution to me is as mysterious as the problem.
    I told this to my friend who introduced me to Arch, and this is what he said:
    Damn it computers, you were supposed to be deterministic!

  • [SOLVED] Just got back to my Arch machine - problems

    So, after about a month of not having Internet access, I booted my Arch system today to update everything but of course, I have some problems that are keeping me from doing that.  I have Gnome as my DE and when I boot up, I can log in just fine but when I get to the Desktop, I can't click on anything.  The mouse moves just fine, the icons even change shade when I put the cursor over them like they can be clicked on but clicking on them does nothing.  I have to launch everything with the keyboard, which isn't such a big deal but it's a bit of a nuisance. 
    The other thing that's bothering me is I have no internet access.  I am behind a different router now with an IP of 192.168.1.1 (instead of 192.168.0.1) and I made the appropriate change in the ROUTE variable in rc.conf but it hasn't done anything.  I even tried manually adding the default route to the routing table with
    #route add -net default gw 192.168.1.1 dev eth0
    but that doesn't seem to have done anything either.  I have an IP address but I can't ping the router.  Oh yeah, and network is listed as a daemon in rc.conf.  This is, of course, keeping me from updating my system using pacman.

    I am behind a router and had to do only very minor tweaks to get it going: just enter the value of the gateway and remove the ! before gateway within the routes variable. Here is the (expanded) relevant part of my rc.conf, I hope it helps you:

  • [solved] NFS broke since update. OpenElec can't see shares

    Hi all,
    I cant figure out how to resolve the upgrade to NFS since the recent update. The service seems to be running just fine, but i can't get OpenElec on my Raspberry Pi to see the shares. In my export file on Arch I have
    /mnt/hdd/Music 192.168.1.0/24(rw,all_squash,insecure,anonuid=0,anongid=0)
    # this hasnt changed.
    generally, i can use the OpenElec UI to browse through and see all the mount points and what not. But its not working. I ssh'd into the pi and tried to mount that with
    $ mount -t nfs 192.168.1.141:/mnt/hdd/Music /music
    returns

  • [SOLVED:] SLIM not reading slim.conf (no password auto-focus)

    Yesterday I began having issues with SLIM.  I'm not sure if they're related, but  while running Puppy , I inadvertently deleted the desktop icon for my Arch home directory on /dev/sda8.  I rebooted Puppy and it reappeared.  After running Puppy, something went wrong with my clocks (system and hardware) and the times were all wrong.  I fixed that with NTPD.  I currently dual boot Arch and Windows 7 from the hard drive, and occasionally from a USB stick, Puppy Linux.  I'm using an ASUS K50IJ laptop.  I run Xfce4.  I do not have any disk encryption enabled.
    When I boot up, the SLIM login appears as normal, but rather than password auto-focus, I'm prompted for a username.  If I enter the username and hit return, I'm still staring at the username prompt.  After three or four iterations of entering a username + enter, I finally get a password prompt and can log in.
    I have tried:
    1.  Reinstalling archlinux-themes-slim
    2.  Uninstalling archlinux-themes-slim and slim, then reinstalling slim
    3.  Removing old Xfce4 & Xfwm sessions
    4.  Removing slim.conf and entering a pristine version.
    5.  Reviewing /var/log/slim.log files for oddities.  I found one:

    I solved this - slim was not the last daemon I started in rc.conf.  By moving it to the end, I get password auto-focus and everything works.
    Now my rc.conf looks like

    I found this recommendation in the Display Manager wiki page while researching the problem:
    Ensure you start the display manager last in the DAEMONS array, otherwise X will later allocate a tty device which was previously claimed by Getty (see /etc/inittab). Not placing the display manager at the end can cause X crashes, and is therefore unsupported.
    I'd just been lucky before that there wasn't a conflict.
    There is a "flicker" during login where I'm shown the XFCE splash, then the SLIM splash again, then the XFCE desktop.  Not sure what's going on there, but it's no big deal.

    I have all my $HOME on an NFS Server. So long I used suse and debian, now I want switch to arch but the nfs-client ist not working correctly:

    The Problem ist solved.
    I use ldap for authentication. During the setup of the ldapclient I copied the nsswitch.ldap to nsswitch.conf. But the line for "hosts:" was:
    hosts:          dns ldap
    but in my dns ist no localhost entry. After I changed this line to:
    hosts:          files dns ldap
    everything was ok. The statd is now running and I can start to migrate to archlinux ;-)

  • [Solved] NFS write problem

    I looked through available threads and couldn't find anything that helped, I use VMware to develop on I need to connect to the vm filesystem with local dev tools. I set up everything according to arch wiki, caveat the server vm is ubuntu. I can mount using either the Ubuntu command
    mount -t nfs4 -o proto=tcp,port=2049 192.168.1.96:/ /root/www
    or the Arch command
    #mount -t nfs4 192.168.1.96:/ /root/www
    I can read and traverse directories, I can create a file, but I cannot edit or delete a file that is already there.

    Basically, I have had very few problems with NFS - however, the ubuntu-version of linuxmint had problems with uid/gids - they ended up as the complement of '-2'!
    I never use an exports file, but set up the server in rc.local, basically like so:
    exportfs -iv -o rw,insecure,no_root_squash /pub/usb 192.168.1.0/24:/pub
    Then, on the client side in /etc/fstab I have:
    {servername}:/pub /pub nfs defaults,noatime,noauto 0 0
    With linuxmint (at least the gnome-version), I had to use 'sshfs' instead. linuxmint lmde is ok.
    Also - I have used NFS for more years than I care to remember, but ... I must admit that sshfs has its merits - especially if you remember to use '-o allow_other'.
    ie on the client side you can use:
    sshfs -o allow_other {servername}:/pub/usb /pub

    I just got the Catalyst 9.4 drivers working on my laptop (Lenovo T400) since the open source ones just can't keep up (even with DRI).
    The problem is now my fonts are all different sizes (or not loading).
    I was thinking this might be because of my monitor settings in xorg.conf.  I've spent a really long time trying to get the catalyst drivers working (I'm doing OpenGL work, so I kinda need them), so I definitely understand why the Arch team took them out of the main repository.  I'm just a little hesitant about changing settings after I finally found a working config.

    I just switched to Arch from Debian a few weeks ago, and I had fglrx working with my Debian install, but I'm not really great at configuring Xorg, so I just don't want to break X again.

    if it's a login manager, you'll need to edit it's configuration and set it otherwise.

    After checked the aufs2 standalone code and 2.6.29-3-ARCH patch, I found 2.6.29-3-ARCH confilict with aufs2...
    2.6.29-3-ARCH changed the do_splice_from of fs/splice.c to vfs_splice_from...   while aufs2 standalone need do_splice_from ...
    And there is no such change on kernel official patch 2.6.29.1...
    So,
    If you need aufs2 support, abandon 2.6.29-3-ARCH patch is the best way...

    Hi, I just switched over to Arch a couple of days ago.  I have been extremely pleased with this distro, but am confused on one part.  I have an IPCOP firewall setup with dmz pinholes from blue to green for a couple of nfs shares.  For this I have to have the nlockmgr, status, and mountd on static IP's.  In other distros I have followed these steps:
    1. Create the file "/etc/sysconfig/nfs" and add the following contents:
    STATD_PORT=4001
    LOCKD_TCPPORT=4002
    LOCKD_UDPPORT=4002
    MOUNTD_PORT=4003
    2. Append the following to the file "/etc/services":
    rquotad 4004/tcp # rpc.rquotad tcp port
    rquotad 4004/udp # rpc.rquotad udp port
    3. Restart the nfs services
    This does not seem to work in Arch though.  Can someone point me in the right direction to setting these ports to static??

    Yes it works fine. The nfs server, on ipcop's green subnet, has the following in /etc/modprobe.d/* :

    Thanks for the hints. Meanwhile, I have done some more background reading on running Arch in VMWare Player. In particular I followed the guidelines in this article. So it turns out that X requires some special configuration when run from within VMWare.
    pacman -S xf86-input-vmmouse xf86-video-vmware xf86-video-vesa svga-dri
    and a vmwgfx module is supposed to be loaded. I installed tha packages and tried to load vmwgfx, but when I do lsmod I just can't see it. Then it was pointed out to me that it might be a kernel mismatch problem. The linux installed on nfsroot is 3.6.2 whereas for some reason uname -a gives me version 3.5.6.
    I've tried to rebuild initramfs with the new kernel using -k switch of mkinicpio, but it didn't help. It still boots into 3.5.6. It as if the initramfs from the client was taking precedence. So then I went back to the previous image of my VM, updated the system, made appropriate changes to mkinitcpio.conf and run mkinitcpio... and it no longer boots. mount: protocol not supported. I will post the details in my other topic.

    I'm having some problems with networkmanager. Networkmanager seems to need dbus for starting up, so placing it too early in the rc.conf results in a start failure. Before, dbus starting time could be configured via rc.conf, now dbus is started automatically and unfortunately quite late. So networkmanager has to be started late, too. But starting it late is a problem, too, because other daemons (ntp, cups, samba) need a network connection for starting up. Is there a way to control, when dbus is started? Or maybe a way to start networkmanager without dbus having started?

    ok, well i didn't read the whole thing, but yes place crond after networkmanager. You can even background crond with the @ symbol: @cond. Mine works fine.
    From the "NetworkManager" page in the ArchWiki (make sure you read it carefully):
    Note: If you happen to specify the fam daemon in your array, it must appear after networkmanager. The same also applies to portmap and netfs if specified.
    Here's my setup:
    DAEMONS=(syslog-ng !network alsa hal networkmanager netfs @crond)
    The alsa daemon doesn't have to go after hal and networkmanager because it has nothing to do with them, but if you put it after, still just fine.
    Make sure you adjust all the settings as stated in that ArchWiki-NetworkManager page, and also, check the HAL page in the ArchWiki and also the FAM page and follow the instructions carefully. This is important! I had problems untill i followed the instructions. Also check the ArchWiki for the other apps you have too.  Often times, you have to add certain settings, you can't just install the apps and expect them to work. The wiki pages will often tell you what to add or change in various .conf files, etc.
    Also, please not from the ArchWiki-FAM page:
    Warning: FAM is obsolete; use Gamin instead, if possible. Gamin is a re-implementation of the FAM specification. It is newer and more actively maintained, and also simpler to configure.
    That's why i don't have fam, because i am using gamin. If you follow the Beginner's Guide, it will tell you this too.
    If you are using FAM for a particular app, it is likely that the app will work with gamin instead. If not, consider not using that app since FAM is obsolete.
    I'm guessing you are using Gnome, correct? (Because if you were using KDEmod for Arch, it would have all these things set up without installing FAM)
    Directly from the Gnome installation section of the Beginner's Guide:
    Warning: The FAM (File Alteration Monitor) daemon is obsolete; use Gamin instead, if possible. Gamin is a re-implementation of the FAM specification. It is newer and more actively maintained, and also simpler to configure:

    I hope this helps! Remove FAM (install gamin with pacman -S gamin) and follow all the setup instructions in all the wiki pages for each daemon and/or app you have installed, starting from the beginner's guide with Gnome.

  • [SOLVED] Hal daemon causing 3 keystrokes instead of 1

    I've installed arch several times before and I've never had this problem. I'm pretty sure it's the hal daemon because "sudo /etc/rc.d/hal stop" fixes the problem. Also, the keystrokes only repeat while in X and it doesn't matter what window manager I use.
    Any ideas?

  • [Solved]NFS, rcpbind, nfs common lockup after latest -Syu

    both laptops that i have running arch, same hardware, same -Syu have NFS freezing with 3.4.2-2 update. Anyone else seeing this? when I bang out (!rpcbind !nfs-common) system runs normally. Does anyone have any ideas that i am missing? my server which is on the same -Syu is running without error,
    I'm posting this from the server, so i do not have /log/ access to the clients at this time. but i ran a -Syu earlier in the week with with the filesystem upgrade with no isseue,

    I might have the same problem. Just since we have all home directories on NFS4 the problem is pretty severe. It is confirmed on 2 computer already and the latest kernel-update including the use of latest mkinitcpio does not really help. The crash just happen at write access, so far never at read access.
