[SOLVED] Hal daemon causing 3 keystrokes instead of 1

I've installed arch several times before and I've never had this problem. I'm pretty sure it's the hal daemon because "sudo /etc/rc.d/hal stop" fixes the problem. Also, the keystrokes only repeat while in X and it doesn't matter what window manager I use.
Any ideas?

HAL fails to start. I'm not exactly sure why this is, but I believe it has something to do with my attempts to get automounting working under gnome.

It's odd, because D-BUS will start but hal will not... Anybody have any suggestions?
* UPDATE (10/08/08): Did a full system upgrade and removed dbus from daemons array in rc.conf. UDEV EVENTS Processing speed seems to be back to normal.
** SOLUTION UPDATE: After removing custom ntfs-3g fdi policies from /etc/hal/fdi/policy/, hal seems to load without any problems. This seems to be a bug, since my policies were working at one point, and I believe a hal update caused the problem. I'll see if I can track down the exact hal version that it breaks on, and submit a respective bug report for it.
** OFF-TOPIC UPDATE: Using hwdetect --modules to get a modules list, and using these modules in rc.conf with MOD_AUTOLOAD turned off (and also in mkinitcpio.conf and running mkinitcpio -g <path>), seems to have dramatically increased my "Load udev events" processing time. After doing this, my udev speed went from almost 4000ms to literally < 500ms.

you have dbus starting before hal but hal starts debus by default so please try this...

and delete debus from that line.
Removed dbus from the daemons array and hal still won't start. Also, I noticed that the "Loading udev events" portion of the boot process seems to take a lot longer than it used to. Last boot, it took about 19130ms, whereas it used to take < 3000ms. Could these be related?
Also, I ran a full system upgrade, both udev and hal were upgraded.

HAL daemon fails to start

I've seen a couple of threads with the same problem but have not been able to get this daemon started. I keep getting a 'failed' output after calling hal with sudo privilages in /etc/rc.d/
I am a group member of the optical and storage groups. I've tried adding hal only right after syslog-ng in the daemons array as well as dbus and hal respectively, but to no avail.
I've tried starting, stopping, restarting, and everything fails. The only success I've had was starting dbus but nothing else.
I found it interesting that the ps aux command returns that the hal daemon is running which is odd after having failed starting/stopping it. It does'nt seem to work anyways.

[Solved][Hal and Partitions] Newbie problem with hal policy

Hello everybody,
As a new user of archlinux for less than a week I have experienced a great distribution after having been for 1 year on Linux.
After installation I was able to solve most of my problems with the wiki and the forums but there is one problem I cannot resolve.
I have installed Kde 4.2 on my computer and I can mount Usb drives, or CDs with hal (It is in the daemons section of my rc.conf) but strangely I cannot access my other partitions such as my Ubuntu partition (ext3), or the family's Windows partition (Nfts). I have installed nfts-3g for the nfts partition hal refuses to let me access it, I will give you what Dolphin says when I try to access the Nfts:

And for the ext3

You might want to reread the Hal wiki re: Permission Denied with automounter. Your /etc/PolicyKit/PolicyKit.conf seems to be missing the lines mentioned in the wiki.

[SOLVED] HAL doesn't work, so I can't suspend/hibernate?

I've placed (atleast what I think) to be the necessary daemons in rc.conf:
DAEMONS=(syslog-ng dbus md fam hal alsa network netfs crond)
FAM for XFCE..
When I run the suspend command, it states
"Failed to suspend: Suspend and hibernate are only supported by HAL and is not available."
#sudo /etc/rc.d/hal start:

This happens in root, and when I attempt to start and stop it....
It took endless configurations to get ndiswrapper to work, I've changed only but files required for network, why could hal not work? I can't find much online about how to fix it, and what steps there are if it fails to restart..

I tried this and it..sorta works, restarting HAL:

(DONE instead of FAIL)
But going to suspend/hibernate it says HAL is not available still! I seem to not be able to set it up so well..
It says I already have pm-utils, but I ahead and installed that anyway (assuming mine wasn't dev release).
I can suspend with
$ sudo pm-suspend
But when I resume video doesn't start, my screen is black (not displaying black, more like off).. I'm on a laptop with an intel X3000 graphics chip, not a PC in case that helps.

How do i add the "hal" daemon to the DAEMONS array in /etc/rc.conf?

I know how to get into the editor for /etc/rc.conf , but what exactly do i type to add "hal" to the array?

Gowireless - please, use some common sense when reading the documentation.
DAEMONS Section
This array simply lists the names of those scripts contained in /etc/rc.d/ which are to be started during the boot process, and the order in which they start. Asynchronous initialization by backgrounding is also supported and useful for speeding up boot.
DAEMONS=(network @syslog-ng netfs @crond)
I dunno, maybe putting in hal into the DAEMONS array would work?
Also, it's really annoying for you to create a new thread every two hours with a new question that could be solved by following the beginner's guide step by step. If you follow it carefully, your problems will all be solved. Trust me. When I first started using Arch, following the beginner's guide did wonders for my Arch Linux installation.

[SOLVED] xfce-panel causing problems with mouse/touchpad

Since upgrading the packages below I mouseclicks occasionally do not work. Also scrolling using the scrollwheel and touchpad doesn't start sometimes. I determined it is not a problem with the mouse or touchpad because 'xev' shows the correct events firing. Also I see the icon change from arrow to hand when clicking.

It appears that "xfce4-panel" is the cause. I use tint2 instead of xfce-panel, but the process running an empty panel is started by default and somehow interfered with mouse and touchpad events. solved it by removing it from the session, and comment it out in /etc/xdg/xfce4/xfconf/xfce-perchannel-xml/xfce4-session.xml

[SOLVED] apache daemon fails to start on boot, but rc.d restart works?

I installed apache from the official repos and followed the instructions in the wiki for configuring it. I checked to make sure the http user exists, and I /etc/hosts looks good (to me). Upon boot, the daemon fails to start and I can't load local web pages, but running "rc.d restart httpd" works just fine. Since I'd rather not start it manually every time I boot, is there a way to fix this? Also, httpd is the last daemon in my DAEMONS array.

Per the wiki, I also tried commenting out the line that reads
LoadModule unique_id_module modules/mod_unique_id.so
Either way, it still fails on boot.

The SIGTERM are from reboots, yes. I'm not absolutely sure that the process isn't running; I just know that I can't access http://localhost immediately upon reboot. I have to restart the httpd daemon, which works fine. How would I be able to tell if it's just hung?
I checked everything.log, and I don't see anything that leaps off the page to me.

All I notice is that my system's time is having a few problems, since you'll notice that events occur at 22:00 and change, then 17:00 and change, then back to 22:00 and change afterwards. Could this be the problem? I've had the CMOS batteries peg out on me suddenly in the last few weeks. I would hope this sytem is not also suffering a similar fate. Nothing else was happening on my system except for the standard processes from /etc/rc.conf and other standard ones, since I've just been rebooting, checking the logs, then posting here.

[SOLVED] Changed daemons & wireless stopped working

So my problem started after I edited rc.conf to change my daemon array and rebooted. I simply removed network from the daemons sections, rebooted, and upon reboot networkmanager showed no wireless connection. So I re-edited my rc.conf file and placed network back where it was, rebooted again, and the problem still exists.
In rc.conf my networking section looks like this:
eth0="dhcp"
wlan0="dhcp"
INTERFACES=(eth0 wlan0)
In rc.conf my daemons sections looks like this:
DAEMONS=(syslog-ng network netfs crond alsa dbus hal networkmanager)
iwconfig output:

Ok just for reference, I went here: http://linuxwireless.org/en/users/Drivers/b43/devices to double check that I had the proper driver installed. the site told me to issue the following:

the part in brackets at the end is the pci id: [14e4:4318] which tells me that my device is supported by the b43 driver, according to the chart here: http://wireless.kernel.org/en/users/Dri … CI_devices
I have reinstalled b43-fwcutter and the firmware for my b4318. I also tried the rmmod and modprobe commands to no avail.

[SOLVED] HAL don't start-

Hello!
It appears that my HAL now [FAIL] at startup even if it is in my rc.conf.
I've tried
# /etc/rc.d/hal restart
:: Stopping Hardware Abstraction Layer [FAIL]
:: Starting Hardware Abstraction Layer [FAIL]
DBUS is also installed…
The weird thing is that worked great before… and not even because of an upgrade, it fails…
Have you some ideas ?

It also says [FAIL] for me, yet HAL still functions correctly (automounts drives, etc). Are you sure the daemon doesn't work anyway?

[solved] nm-applet causing hassle

when i run it i get

Make sure dbus is started before you start wicd or nm-applet.
I start hal (which requires dbus) before I start wicd, never had any problems.
DAEMONS=(syslog-ng !network hal @oss @fam @wicd @crond @smartd @openntpd @cpufreq)

How to solve hanging problem caused by the plugin-container.exe (instruction 0x0276609c)?

To whom it may concern,
I am not sure about the cause, however I have experienced hanging of the programme repeatedly. I have not been able to solve it otherwise than by ending the process via task manager (I am using Firefox 4.0.1 running on Win XP SP2). After doing so, a message appeared saying this:
"sw: plugin-container.exe application error
Instruction at the address 0x0276609c referred to the memory address 0x00000014. Impossible to execute memory operation: read. End the programme by clicking on the OK button."
I am sorry if my translation is not correct enough. I have tried to google the instruction number, but to no avail. Thus I have decided to ask you for help.

MacBook Retina: "CMD-," causes zoom out instead of preferences (how to reset?)

Firefox 18.0 beta, but also happened with 17 and lower:
CMD+, (command-comma) causes web page to zoom out instead of display Preferences. How to reset? What's going on here--and how can I stop it?

A custom hotkey might be overriding the default one in Firefox. Go to '''"System Preferences"''', then click '''"Keyboard"''', then go to the '''"Keyboard Shortcuts"''' tab. Select the '''"Application Shortcuts"''' item in the sidebar, and check if '''"Show Preferences"''' or something similar is listed. If so, delete it.

Cannot obtain lock on /media/.hal-mtab
I tried today my camera docking station. It was working fine before and now I get this error. I tried my USB Stick and got the same error.
any ideas for a work around or fix this problem?

USB sticks and drives do not automount correctly
If you are experiencing problems with automounting usb sticks and/or drives, but do not have problems with automounting CDs or DVDs, and if you are able to manually mount the USB device in question, then you should create the file "preferences.fdi" in the folder /etc/hal/fdi/policy and paste the following line into the file
<merge key="volume.ignore" type="bool">false</merge>
Problem solved. But I have no idea why it was happened and what was the problem. It was working fine before. Anyway, now it works and this is important

(SOLVED) Hal and dbus, do I need dbus?

I read the wiki and it says if I don't use hal in my daemons then I need to add dbus.
I haven't been using hal, and I haven't added dbus either. My system seems to be working right, but I guess something could be wrong. Reading the wiki brings me here to ask if I need dbus and why?
