[SOLVED]nm-applet taking too much memory (sometimes all the processes)

Hello,
One of the reason i chose Archlinux (archbang) was to keep the system small to fit in my little 512MB of ram and i've been happy so far but for some reason i noticed that nm-applet is now taking a *lot* of memory, around 40mb while it didn't use that much.
Here is my ps_mem after a fresh boot:

I could live with an applet taking 40mb on a more beefy machine but being just behind chrome looks wrong. So i'm not sure what has changed, at the moment i just kill the process but i considered switching to wicd if it's ever better but it appears that it's not well maintained.
Any hint?

Thanks for your answers.
I needed to use my computer and it wasn't usable so i just reinstalled my distro and went back to normal, while tweaking the OS i made various reboots to check if it happened again and how...
And the problem of my system taking 240ish MB at boot vs 75MB is actually the nvidia drivers, after installing nvidia-304xx the memory went up a lot, but removing the driver and switching back to nouveau actually make the system way less greedy memory-wise, there is still a bit of mystery in one of the case where everything was fine but nm-applet but i think it's half solved here.
PS : I gave shot at zswap but it made my computer unusable and freeze a lot

  • Why it is taking too much time to kill the process?

    Hi All,
    Today,one of my user ran the calc script and the process is taking too much time, then i kill the process. I am wondering about one thing here even it is taking too long to kill the process, generally it will not take more than 2 sec. I did this through EAS.
    After that I ran Maxl statement
    alter system kill request 552599515;
    there is no use at all.
    Please reply if you have any solutions to kill this process.
    Thanks in advance.
    Ram.

    Hi Ram,
    1. Firstly, How much time does your calculation scripts normally run.
    2. While it was running, you can go to the logs and monitor where exactly the script is taking time .
    3. Sometimes, it does take time to cancel a transaction ( as it might be in between).
    4. Maxl is always good to kill ,as you did . It should be succesful . Check the logs what it says ,and also the "sessions" which might say "terminating" and finish it off.
    5. If nothing works ,and in the worst case scenarion , if its taking time without doing anything. Then log off all the users and stop the databas and start it .
    6. Do log off all the users, so that you dont corrupt any filter related sec file.
    Be very careful , if its production ( and I assume you have latest backups)

    Hello all,
    i am on hp-ux itanium. I have OMS(11.1) and agent running on this box. And for some reason the oracle process is taking too much memory. From the glance cmd at OS level, we get the below...Why is java taking some much memory...the only thing running on this box is OMS, agent, the repository DB and one other DB. This machine is 16gb of memory. Any idea where i can start digging to figure out why so much memory is being taken by java and emagent process ??? is that normal ?

    2)How did you come to the conclusion that because of this, your update is slow?

  • Skype keeps crashing after taking too much memory

    Hello,
    So my version of skype client is 7.3.0.101 and it doesn't stop crashing since a few months now.
    Here's precisely what happens : I launch it, it's pretty slow since the problem the problem appeared but something like 30 after it crashes. We can see in the task manager that skype progressively takes way too much memory, most of the time it starts at 150 Mo and quickly reaches 1200-1400 Mo before crashing.
    I noticed that skype took less memory by running it in compatibility mode for windows XP service pack 3, it stays stuck at 200 Mo, but my whole computer looks slower.
    I tried everything but nothing worked, I uninstalled and reinstalled it, I added or modified keys in my registry, added skype to exceptions in my fire-walls, tried to install an older version (which didn't work because of auto update)... I don't know what to do now, that's why I come here to ask for help
    Also one more thing : It exessively takes my processor power (arround 14% all the time), and my processor is an i7-4770.
    Thanks a lot if you decide to help me !

    Have you tried these?

  • Safari 6 taking too much memory

    Compared to Firefox, Camino and Chrome Safari demands too much of my memory. Slows the computer down.
    Is there a solution?

    There isn't much you can, or should, do about it. Safari caches everything in case you go back to a page or image. The operating system also manages the virtual memory and will take what it needs. If you are experiencing any undesireable side effects, they are likely due more to the antivirus than the memory.
    But look at the bright side - you won't be accidentally e-mailing viruses to any Windows users

  • Too many alerts taking too much system resources in the XI system

    We have been running Alerts in XI and looks like there are too many now. The alerts are stopped now from generation.
    I can't even run the report RSALERTPROC successfully to delete the existing alerts from the system.
    Anyone knows an alternative way to do this? Or what is the table name where the alerts are stored so that we can delete some entries.
    Thanks a lot.

    Hi,
    a. If the "Suppress Multiple Alerts of This Rule" is checked for the Rule, we shall recieve only one alert mail for a particular error category. We have to confirm the Alerts by clicking complete in the Alert Inbox.
    If we dont check this "Suppress Multiple Alerts of This Rule" , we will get all the alerts without being supressed.
    b. Run the Report RSALERTPROC and delete all the alerts. Let me know the difficulty in running this report as you have mentioned...
    c. Run the Report RSALERTTEST to display the Alert status.
    Thanks,

  • How do I remove the Icons next to each bookmark on the bookmark toolbar? They take up too much space and all the bookmarks I need on the toolbar dont show up.

    On my bookmarks toolbar, each bookmark has the associated webpage icon next to it. I would like to remove those icons, as they take up too much space.
    Thanks

    The icons, if you are familiar with them or they are obvious, take up less space than the words. You can abbreviate the names down to next to nothing or even nothing.
    To save space and help organization you can group bookmarks into folders on your Bookmarks toolbar.

    If you want to reduce memory(60%) '''when firefox minimize[only in windows os] '''there is an easy old good trick:
    type in the address bar '''about:config'''
    then press the button '''i'll be careful i promise'''
    then '''right-click''' anywhere in the list of preferences and choose '''new''' > '''boolean'''
    then type in the open window '''config.trim_on_minimize'''
    then click''' OK''', and in the next window select '''TRUE''' and click '''OK'''.
    exit firefox and restart-it.

  • Resizing tablespace is taking too much time and freezing the database

    This is my database setup:
    3 node rac on 32 bit linux (rh 4)

    asm config: everything is default from installation
    current datafiles: 3.2T out of 5.0T (autoextend on)
    this is how I do to resize the tablespace manually to test how long it takes:
    alter tablespace my_tbs resize 3173562M; //from 3172538M (adding another 1gb)
    And it took 33 minutes to complete.
    Could someone tell me what is wrong?

    sorry, it is 5 Tera bytes total.
    there are 2 sans, one is 1.7T (one partition). the other san has 3 partitions with 1.1T each. I have only 1 datagroup
    I used big file so there is only one big file for this tablespace. the size of the tablespace is 3.2T used with autoextend on (increment size is 1G)
    this is the command I used to manually resize the tablespace:
    alter tablespace my_table_space resize <3229923M>; //current size + 1G

  • Query taking too much time with dates??

    hello folks,
    I am trying pull some data using the date condition and for somereason its taking too much time to return the data

       and al.activity_date <= to_date('20101123 235959', 'YYYYMMDD HH24MISS') -- If i use this it returns the data in a second. why is that?
    How do i get the previous day without using the hardcoded to_date('20101123 000000', 'YYYYMMDD HH24MISS'), if i need to retrieve it faster??

    Presumably you've got an index on activity_date.
    If you apply a function like TRUNC to activity_date, you can no longer use the index.
    Post execution plans to verify.
    and al.activity_date >= TRUNC (SYSDATE, 'DD') - 1
    and al.activity_date < TRUNC (SYSDATE, 'DD')

    When i took the whole image and created it as a initramfs and running from it (w/o any hdd) the whole system is very slow and i am seeing PCIe ISRs taking too much time and hecne the driver is failing !
    any help on this is much appreciated.
    there is a first initramfs iage which is the usual initrd the opensuse installs and i patched it to unpack the second initramfs (full rootfs of 1.8GB) in to RAM (32GB) as tmpfs and exec_init from it.

    Abhayadev S,
    Although your problem definitely looks very interesting, we can't help with issues with suse linux.
    Or are you considering to test archlinux on that machine ?

  • Copy an image into system clipboard takes too much memory

    Our Swing application copies a java.awt.BufferedImage into the system clipboard. Our image has a size of 1024x768 pixels and a depth of 24 bits per pixel.
    The copy from the image to the system clipboard works, but is very slow and takes too much memory. Before the copy, java.exe uses about 30 MB. After the copy, it uses about 90 MB! However, a 1024x768x3 image should consume only 2,4 MB.
    We did some debugging and it seems the AWT library does several copies of our original image in order to copy it in the system clipboard. I guess that each of these copies takes a lot of memory (probably because of a different format from the original image) and is not immediately garbage collected.
    This is a big issue for our application because the JVM throws an OutOfMemoryError when we try to copy a new image to the system clipboard.
    Here is our code. Do you have any idea? Thanks a lot for your help.
    // Create the image
    BufferedImage image = new BufferedImage(1024, 768, BufferedImage.TYPE_3BYTE_BGR);
    Graphics2D g2 = image.createGraphics();
    drawSomething(g2);
    g2.dispose();
    // Put the image into the system clipboard
    ImageSelection handler = new ImageSelection(image);
    Clipboard clipboard = Toolkit.getDefaultToolkit().getSystemClipboard();
    clipboard.setContents(handler, handler);
    * An implementation of Transferable and ClipboardOwner to be used with
    * images.
    public class ImageSelection implements Transferable, ClipboardOwner {
        private static final DataFlavor flavors[] = {DataFlavor.imageFlavor};
        private Image image;
        public ImageSelection(Image imageToCopy) {
            this.image = imageToCopy;
        // Interface ClipboardOwner
        public void lostOwnership(Clipboard clipboard, Transferable transferable) {
            image = null;
        // Interface Transferable
        public Object getTransferData(DataFlavor flavor) throws UnsupportedFlavorException,
                                                                IOException {
            if (isDataFlavorSupported(flavor)) {
                return image;
            else {
                throw new UnsupportedFlavorException(flavor);
        public DataFlavor[] getTransferDataFlavors() {
            return flavors;
        public boolean isDataFlavorSupported(DataFlavor flavor) {
            return flavor.equals(flavors[0]);
    }

    why dont u use other data structure to store the image , which will take less memory.

  • Finer takes too much memory on yosemite! and keeps taking more and more until it gets the machine to it's knees! What to do???

    Right after getting yosemite on my Macbook Pro with 16GB memory and SSD HDD. I find that after working for 30 minutes or so that the machine gets really slow, even switching between screens gets kinda of sluggish!!!
    So i looked into the Activity Monitor and to my surprise i find that Finder is taking more than 4GB of memory just by itself and high percentage of CPU.
    If i quit it, the machine goes back to being normal, but then Finder will restart, and again after 30 minutes or so, it does the same thing over and over.
    I am sure that it's some kind of a bug, but i don't know where to start to solve this problem!!!
    This never happened on previous OSXs.
    If anyone have a hint it will be appreciated.
    Thanks,
