[SOLVED] no gui after wrong merge of config files

Hi all,
i'm writing from my pc through lynx. I'm not able anymore to log to gui interface in gdm.
I upgraded the system and I'm sure I made wrong merge of some config files like shadow, gpasswd etc
I first realized I was not able anymore to login, then the gnome/shel was unresponding.
from command line i reset the password of my user, but nothing changed
Now when booting I can read a message error on the screen:
"failed to start recreate volatile files and directories" could you please help me fixing this issue?
what should I check?
thanks in advance

  • [SOLVED]Shutdown fails, probably because of some config file I changed

Right, i can't shutdown or reboot properly (pm-util's suspend works).
When I try, all (or most, I can't tell) of the deamons are closed properly, but then something attempts to do something with slimlock. It loops so fast I cant' really read the error
message, but I don't think slimlock is even suposed to be accessed at that point.
Deleting slimlock doesn't help, it just gives a "couldn't find command slimlock" (or something similar) error instead.
I have some vague idea that I'm to blame this, because I seem to remember messing around with the shutdown process, trying to get it to call slimlock before anything else.
The thing is; I don't remember.
From now on I'll keep some file with a log of changes I make to scripts and config files, to make this easier, but this time I really need help finding out what the heck I've done : )

I've commented the bash scripts out, and the problem persists.
So I figured I could "limit" the search to
find / -mtime -14 -and -size -2M -exec grep -lisE ".*slimlock.* {} \;"
It turned out to be a "sleep" script in /bin.
I still have no idea why that was called, but I'm marking the thread as solved
    Thanks for your efforts

  • [SOLVED] All input devices off through synaptics config file

    Hello guys,
It seems that while I was experimenting with synaptics configuration file (/etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/10-synaptics.conf) I turned all input devices off, and as you may assume I can't change this.
Is there a way to fix this issue?
I was trying to use an live CD and change the config files but I realized that are read-only files.
Thank you very much in advance.

Thank you for your answer WonderWoofy,
I tried to switch to a tty but it is not possible, it seems to me that the keyboard is not even active as well as the touchpad or connected usb mouse's.
Is there a way to start Arch directly without X, maybe modifying something at the GRUB sequence or during loading of the services an so son?
    How can I do it?
    Thank you.

  • [solved]gui is wrong on transmission and deadbeef only..... hmmmm

Hi.... for some reason, since the systemd upgrade, transmission-gtk, deadbeef and nm-applet dont display correctly.... they look ok, but the colours are not as the gtk theme should be.... for example, the gtk theme is making pcmanfm have file, edit, view, etc have black background with white writing, but in transmission-gtk, deadbeef and nm-applet, file, edit, view et have dark grey writing, with a lighter grey background, then an additional background of lighter grey.
any ideas? it just looks messy!

@Šaran - got it already.... still no joy
sorry, made a mistake when i ran leafpad ~/.config/gtk-3.0/settings.ini ,,,, i was logged in as root... just looked in my user file, and it is filled in correctly... so lxappearance is doing its job with the config files.....
I have also worked my way through this entire section of arch wiki relating to gtk3.... guess what... still no luck
    GTK+ 3.x
If you use GNOME 3, the theme can be changed with the gnome-tweak-tool.
If you use Xfce 4.8, both GTK+ 3.x and GTK+ 2.x themes can be managed by Appearance tool. Go to Settings-->Appearance. If selected style has both GTK+ 2.x and GTK+ 3.x themes, they will be used. If selected style has only GTK+ 2.x theme, it will be used for GTK+ 2.x applications and (ugly) defaults will be used for GTK+ 3.x applications. If selected style has only GTK+ 3.x theme, it will be used for GTK+ 3.x applications and (ugly) defaults will be used for GTK+ 2.x applications. Thus for uniform UI appearance and best experience one can use style that has both GTK+ 2.x and GTK+ 3.x themes. Search packages and AUR. One example of this is theme clearwaita-gtk-theme.
If you use a GTK+ 2.x based DE, like Xfce, LXDE, gnome-tweak-tool won't work; see FS#23644. You need to install librsvg, and set your theme manually in $XDG_CONFIG_HOME/gtk-3.0/settings.ini (this is usually ~/.config/gtk-3.0/settings.ini. An example settings.ini file:
    $XDG_CONFIG_HOME/gtk-3.0/settings.ini
    [Settings]
    gtk-application-prefer-dark-theme = false
    gtk-theme-name = Zukitwo
    gtk-fallback-icon-theme = gnome
    gtk-icon-theme-name = [icon theme name]
gtk-font-name = [font name] [font size]
If it still does not change, delete old gtk-3.0 folder in $XDG_CONFIG_HOME and copy gtk-3.0 folder from /path/to/theme to $XDG_CONFIG_HOME. Example:
    $ rm -r ~/.config/gtk-3.0/
    $ cp -r /usr/share/themes/Zukitwo/gtk-3.0/ ~/.config/

  • [SOLVED] Boot loop after upgrade

    Hi all,
When i try to boot arch, even in fallback mode, boot fail and go in loop.
loop happen just after the display of nvidia logo, then it try to do something (not showed in screen), it fail, and the nvidia logo is showen again.
I can't access to GDM, i can't turn off computer (have to remove battery from my laptop), i can't access to terminal/console/virtual console.
    Last things i've made:
    - full update system (pacman -Syu)
    - changed /etc/environment adding this line (i was trying to solve tearing problem):
    CLUTTER_PAINT=disable-clipped-redraws:disable-culling
    CLUTTER_VBLANK=True
    nothing seem to work
i've already removed the 2 added lines from another linux distro i've on the same computer, so i don't think /etc/environment is a problem here
don't know what to do and how to solve...
    any hints?

I have exactly the same problem,
Did a full update with pacman.
I haven't updated with yaourt, because I had some problems and rebooted, but now I cannot access the terminal.
If I switch to tty1, I constantly switch back. Ctrl+Alt+Backspace is not enabled and I'm not sure it would work.
I've tried to only boot to runlevel 3, but gdm is in the daemons or I did something wrong because I boot into X again.
Anyone have an idea how to solve this?
    Thanks
    EDIT: solved it for me
Step 1: on boot let GRUB only boot to init 1
Step 2: change config files so not to start X
Step 3: reboot so you have networking support
Step 4: search in aur if you have a your own cairo package (pacman -Qm)
Step 5: rebuilt that cairo package
    Step 6: start X
    * step 2 and 3 are maybe not needed if you know how to get networking in init 1. Re;ember to undo the changes in Step 2 so X starts at boot again.

  • [SOLVED] Pacman "config file could not be read" error during Arch ins

I've been attempting to get Arch setup for a while now, and after having some trouble with partitions, my wireless connecting, and setting up repos and mirrors, which the Wiki helped me solve, I've hit a bigger bump.  While updating the system using pacman as the Beginners Guide says to do, I get errors when I try to continue the update process as follows :
btw: I'm typing this on a laptop next to my computer
    [root@McArch~]# pacman -Syu
error: config file /etc/pacman.d/core could not be read
error: config file /etc/pacman.d/extra could not be read
error: config file /etc/pacman.d/community could not be read

error: failed to updated core (unexpected error)
error: failed to updated extra (unexpected error)
error: failed to updated community (unexpected error)
error: failed to synchronize any databases
Any tips as to whats going on?  I've tried to created said files, and even insert mirrors into the file, like in the /etc/pacman.d/mirrorlist file but this doesn't seem to help
Last edited by Windfinder (2008-09-29 20:43:29)

    Glad you got it working.
I'm not sure what happened in your install but I just finished using an old 2007.08 iso and pacman first starts out with /etc/pacman.d/core, etc/pacman.d/extra, /etc/pacman.d/community ... etc., but I never had your problem when I did the #pacman -Syu after initial install reboot.  The pacman update removes the above mentioned repos and replaces them with a single /etc/pacman.d/mirrorlist.  You must have messed up an initial config file somehow as I couldn't get the same errors you got.  It looks like you had your /etc/pacman.conf file messed up somehow and when you pointed it to the mirrorlist it could finally work properly.  I'll just include my /etc/pacman.conf file and /etc/pacman.d/mirrorlist so you can compare.  NB*  these are from my x86_64 so for 32 bit machines i686 would replace x86_64 in the files.

  • [SOLVED] broken gnome after lib update

    Hi all
After the update, startx fails w/ gnome but not w/ kde. I know that my xf86-video-intel was changed to xf86-video-intel-uxa. next I tried xf86-video-intel-sna (because it is listed on arch's xps15z page) and still no success.
I would really love some help. The actual fail goes something like: wallpaper, mouse, top bar (w/ clock etc) and then the bottom bar, and right when it looks like it will hand over control, I get dropped into gnome error screen letting me know that something went wrong.

I am. I prefer to run as root.
I have tried running as non root and the result is the same.
Do you think it has to do with /lib changes?

  • [Solved] Bumblebee broken after installing systemd

    Hi Arch Users!
I recently wanted to give systemd a try and made the switch using the Arch's Wiki as a guide. Everything was fine except when I tried running VLC through Bumblebee.
First error from optirun was that it could not connect to Bumblebee demaon. To which I did this:
    yaourt -R bumblebee
    yaourt -S bumblebee-systemd
    systemctl enable bumblebee.service
After reboot the error was it could not load the GPU's drivers (I may be wording this wrong as I cant recall the exact phrasing). Since I recently updated the kernel, I thought it will be a good I idea to re-install Nvidia's drivers. So I did this
    yaourt -S nvidia-utils-bumblebee
    yaourt -S nvidia-bumblebee
Now I get a new error and do not know how to proceed from here on. The error is:
    $ optirun -vvv vlc
    [ 73.424451] [DEBUG]Reading file: /etc/bumblebee/bumblebee.conf
    [ 73.570852] [DEBUG]optirun version 3.0.1 starting...

    [ 73.687497] [DEBUG]Socket closed.
[ 73.687530] [ERROR]Aborting because fallback start is disabled.
    [ 73.687543] [DEBUG]Killing all remaining processes.
It may be purely coincidental that when I switched to sytemd that I see these errors and may well be the updated kernel. My observation is bumblebee was working yesterday and after I made a few system changes today (some that is irrelevant to this problem) bumblebee broke. The changes were
    1. Changed to systemd
    2. Changed to grub2
    3. Updated kernel.
Any help are on this will very much be appreciated.
    Regards
    J

    HI
i have same error, To avoit them I removed /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/20-intel.conf.
    this is my 20-intel.conf content
    Section "Device"
        Identifier  "Intel Graphics"
        Driver      "intel"
        Option      "AccelMethod"  "sna"
    EndSection
I had used to enable sna instead of uxa, now I'm back to uxa but bumblebee work fine.

  • [SOLVED] Several problems after fresh installation

    Hi guys,
i just did a fresh installation of arch and every times i must do something i get this error:
cannot remove, read, edit and etc : read-only file system
So i searched for a workaround.. but i must do this after every boot
    This is it:
    mount -oremount,rw /
There's a way to fix this forever?
Often when i need to edit some files, like /etc/pacman.conf or xorg config file, arch tell me: You do not have write permission to modify... that file
Searched another workaround.. and also this i must do every time after each boot:
sudo chown -R black /directory of file that i'm trying to edit/
I hope to fix this annoying problems, with your help.
    Thanks guys,
    Gabriele.

    Ok guys,
think solved by change my /sda6/ (root) by /mnt to / and adding a slash / before home, boot, var.
Rebooted and try to edit the same file /etc/fstab and no warnings
    Now is like this:
    # /etc/fstab: static file system information
    # <file system> <dir>     <type>     <options>                <dump>    <pass>
    tmpfs                    /tmp        tmps        nodev,nosuid             0                0
    #UUID=blablablabla
    /dev/sda6                  /             ext4                  rw,relatime           0   1
    #UUID=blablabla
    /dev/sda9                  /home            ext4                 rw,relatime            0   2
    #UUID=blablabla
    /dev/sda5                  /boot              ext2                 rw,relatime             0   2
    #UUID=blablabla
    /dev/sda7                  /var                 reiserfs            rw,relatime             0   2
    #UUID=blablabla
    /dev/sda8                  none              swap                defaults                  0   0
Thanks to everyone i also fixed my 2nd problem that i think is related to the first

  • Grub uses wrong UUID and cannot create config file

I've tried performing an installation to a USB drive as per the wiki. Everything works up until I try to boot and grub tries to load the wrong UUID for my / filesystem.
My next step was to chroot back into the USB install and manually change the UUID to the correct one. Odd, as others have pointed out in this thread
the grub-mkconfig command should detect the correct UUID if run from within arch-chroot.
Anyway, after changing the UUID in /boot/grub/grub.cfg and trying to regenerate the config file with `grub-mkconfig -o /boot/grub/grub.cfg` I noticed the file had not changed. This is because the command is exiting successfully, but isn't actually writing any file. I deleted the file and tried the command again to be sure. No new file.
Next I booted into grub, using the config generated with the wrong UUID, and dropped to the shell using `c` -- I was able to load my install just fine using
    set root=(hd0,gpt2)
    linux /vmlinuz-linux root=/dev/sdb3 ro
    initrd /initramfs-linux.img
    boot
From there I tried removing the bad config file and recreating it using the `grub-mkconfig -o /boot/grub/grub.cfg` command... no dice. Does anyone know what is going on? At the least the command should tell me that it is failing, no?

Attached is the output of `grub-mkconfig` running from the chroot.

  • Colour changed after layer merge or layer flatten

    Hi All,
After making several adjustment layers, the layer merge is performed. However, it is observed that the colour changed after layer merging. It is confirmed with the histogram. This phenomenon also happens in layer flatten. Any solution?

Not sure if this is related, but a previous post had color shift when he converted from RGB to any other profile and then back to RGB. Figured it was a rendering problem. Although he had latest video drivers he went back to previous one and solved the problem.
By any chance did this start after a driver upgrade?

  • [DIS-SOLVED] Sudo hangs after a few uses

I've been searching around for this for some time, but haven't found any enlightenment yet.
Basically, after rebooting I can use sudo a few times (usually 3) successfully. After that, any sudo command just hangs. Interestingly, "sudo -k" still returns normally, but "sudo -v" hangs. It is worth noting that sudo gets as far as prompting me for my password before hanging.
    Background - possibly useful:
I've had arch running for a few months now, and this just started happening yesterday, when I left my machine running overnight doing a large dd to an external drive as described here: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Di … _hard_disk . I woke up, found that the i/o was all finished (I could tell because I was using pv to monitor it), but the command ( which was "sudo dd if=/dev/sda conv=sync, noerror bs=32M | pv -pbert | gzip -c > /run/media/jimbo/Backup2/sda_82513.img.gz") hadn't returned and wasn't responding to SIGINTs. The hanging behavior started here, and I wasn't able to kill the process or unmount my external cleanly. I'm not sure exactly what I did then, but I'm pretty sure I just hard-rebooted my machine, and I've been seeing this behavior ever since.
Any pointers or advice would be greatly appreciated. I'll post any config files you guys are interested in, with PII redacted.

Thanks for the warm welcome! I'm having a blast using arch so far.
So I restored from the dd that I had done, and things are working fine now. I'm not sure what I should do with this thread: should I mark it solved? I didn't actually discover the cause of the problem, so that doesn't seem right.
    To answer your questions:
    1. I may have had one of the partitions on sda mounted. Is this likely to have caused what I saw?
    2. pv, which I just discovered, allows you to see the progress of data through a pipeline. It's pretty neat. The p, b, e, r, and t flags should turn on the progress bar, byte counter, ETA timer, rate counter, and timer, respectively. After looking at the man page, it appears that this is actually the default behavior. So I could have just used pv with no options.

  • [SOLVED] Getting freezes after using dwm for some time and exiting it

Hello, I have an Asus Ux51, with a fresh (less than a month) arch installation. If I recall correctly I had a couple of freezes in other occasions but I don't remember much about those so I rather focus on the only freeze I can more or less reproduce and I've been having lately. After using dwm for some time with a couple of programs opened (rTorrent, browser, and some terminals for instance), if I close dwm or just press the power button to shut down, it starts closing everything and either stays with a black screen, or hangs while X prints the log information. It's not always though, for example, if I just boot it, open dwm and close it without giving it much use it usually closes fine.
Tried googling a bit to see the usual ways to troubleshoot this but didn't get really far.

Found this recent thread in the forums, I'll give REISUB a try late, but the times it freezed I remember trying to blindly reboot it, or switching off virtual console and couldn't.
In case it's of any use, this is my # uname -a
    Linux arch 3.10.3-1-ARCH #1 SMP PREEMPT Fri Jul 26 11:26:59 CEST 2013 x86_64 GNU/Linux
Could it have something to do with the nvidia optimus setup that this laptop has? When installing arch I found out that there was no support yet for it so I'm just using the intel drivers (following what the arch wiki said).
Any ideas or advice to point me in the right direction would be very much appreciated.
    Thanks in advance.

I don't start st in my .xinitrc. I launch it from dmenu and usually everything is fine. If I launch it from dwm's internal command using Alt-Shf-Return, X freezes 100% of the time. A workaround was suggested by st's main developer to call st like this:
    static const char *termcmd[] = { "/bin/sh", "-c", "st", NULL };
but it didn't work for me.
Very rarely X will freeze anyway. I haven't been able to pin it down. When X fails, my journal returns this:

this machine has run for five years now. but here I'm stuck. The last message is from the SSHd being started. I can logon to it on a SSH but the machine itself won't start a shell..
    what's up?

@Gcool: no nothing happens it is the last line on the console. As it is normally a headless I don't have X11 active.
I not always scrutinize the packets that are updated and do a pacman -Syu on a monthly basis.
It boots to runlevel 3 which it does but than is stuck when the last daemon (successfully) loads
It is a file server and I do use md and lvm2 though. My guess is that for some reason the system wasn't shutdown correctly causing the RAID5 to become instable and being resyncd as we speak. But I'm happy to already have the sshd working and could start repairs.
    the last bit of pacman.log:
