this machine has run for five years now. but here I'm stuck. The last message is from the SSHd being started. I can logon to it on a SSH but the machine itself won't start a shell..
what's up?

@Gcool: no nothing happens it is the last line on the console. As it is normally a headless I don't have X11 active.
I not always scrutinize the packets that are updated and do a pacman -Syu on a monthly basis.
It boots to runlevel 3 which it does but than is stuck when the last daemon (successfully) loads
It is a file server and I do use md and lvm2 though. My guess is that for some reason the system wasn't shutdown correctly causing the RAID5 to become instable and being resyncd as we speak. But I'm happy to already have the sshd working and could start repairs.

  • Macbook Pro boots to Darwin prompt after update

I updated my Macbook Pro using Auto Update this morning, and now I can only boot to a Darwin prompt. The computer would boot, go to the starting OS X screen, then straight to the prompt. If I exited the prompt, I would be taken to a user login screen (which would revert back to the prompt after an attempted login)
I checked the system log and it showed that SecurityAgent was crashing.
So, per the advice in this post:
    http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=1545778#1545778
I renamed the NetInfo Database, and reran the initial setup using the proper account short name.
However, now the computer goes to the gray timer circle before straight to the prompt, no Starting OS X screen.
The system log now shows the following:
loginwindow[66]: Login Window Started Security Agent
    loginwindow[66]: AuthorizationRef doesn't have a username (<LoginAuthRefMgr: 0x336150>).\n
launchd: onoption repeating too quickly on port /dev/console, sleeping
I thought flushing the NetInfo Database would help, but apparently not.
I would appreciate any help, and thanks!

I am having the exact same issue!!!! The problem started as soon as I updated to 10.5.4. I sent my computer off to Apple's Depot to be fixed. The 6 day turn around really slowed me down. After my MacBook Pro was returned I had a note from Service that my Logic Board was replaced and my 3rd Party RAM was not 'Apple Friendly.' The RAM is fine and in Perfect Working Condition. I am assuming that after the Apple Techs got to my RAM they did not proceed to replace my Graphics Card or the Inverter Board (the small cable that sends power to the monitor). I took my MacBook Pro out of the box, re-inserted my 3rd-Party RAM and the computer worked fine for 3 weeks. That's until Last Night I had a FireWire Drive Mounting issue and had to Hard Re-Start my system it was then that the Black Screen Issue started again. Again, your notes are EXACTLY the same issue I am now having! I have called Apple Support and they will now take my computer to service with 'White Glove Treatment.'
After reading your post I am convinced that this is a software Bug. Apple please update. As of now I cannot even startup my computer to check for updates! Also, I cannot afford to be without my system for another week!!

  • [Solved] Dwm reconfigure after update.

The problem is simple, after update to last version of Dwm i had to build and install it from scratch. I don't want to do that for any new version of Dwm. Is there a way to avoid that process?
    Cheers.

I had this issue on my other machine (this one uses scrotwm). Trying to remember what I did to resolve it.
There were no errors after makepkg -efi but the version kept reverting back to the previous one. I think it happened updating to that one, too. Anyway, I *think* what I did was to copy my config.h elsewhere, clear out the dir I used for building it, updated abs, copied the dwm-5.8.1 files in and rebuilt. Search for dwm-5.8.1 using grep to make sure you have the right files.
There may be a step missing from that though.
Exactly the same problem and the solution helps a lot. Indeed, this is the way i solved the issue. But the question is: exists any way to do automatically those steps? I know, i can make a shell script, but apart from that there is another?

    Work around (downgrade):
    pacman -U '/var/cache/pacman/pkg/smbclient-3.2.7-1-x86_64.pkg.tar.gz' '/var/cache/pacman/pkg/tdb-3.2.7-1-x86_64.pkg.tar.gz'
I assume you have x86_64, if not modify accordingly.
    Works tnx:)

    Hi,
I have some problems to get an ip address with dhcp on the device eth0. On wlan0 I get a ip address with dhcp depending on the network.
Anyone with the same problem after the update from version 5 to version 6?
After downgrading to version 5 everything works fine...
    Thank you!
    EDIT:
Don't know what it was, today after updating only networkmanager everything works fine.

  • [Solved] Boot problem after update

After updating my Archlinux (64bit) installation and rebooting it a few minutes ago
I have encountered the following problem. The boot process is hanging after
activation of logical volumes. Here are the boot messages:
    Booting the kernel.

I have also tried the fallback kernel. The same problem!
    What is going wrong?

  • [solved] LXTerminal has no prompt after update

I’m running Arch linux on a Thinkpad T40 laptop with e17 as a desktop environment, but I use LXTerminal as a terminal emulator for now.
Today I start LXTerminal, and it displays a cursor, but no prompt, and I cannot type anything in it. I do know that:
    it worked yesterday,
    Xterm still works,
LXTerminal works if started as root from xterm (but not as a user),
and I can su to my user account from this root terminal.
The following packages have been upgraded between then and now, but none of them looks very promising to me:
    glibc
    binutils
    curl
    firefox
    gcc-libs
    gcc-fortran
    ghostscript

    logrotate

    run-parts
    syslog-ng
    valgrind
    vim-runtime
    vim
    zathura
None of ~/.bashrc, ~/.bash_profile, or /etc/bash.bashrc has changed recently, but i can reproduce them below. /etc/bash.bashrc has my PS1 definition in it. I have been unable to find a config file for lxterminal itself.

Like the thread you linked to says, it's always been there. I do have a pacnew file, but the formatting is the same and it's empty, so evidently I just kept using the one I had.
Thanks though Jason, that does seem to have been the issue. And I'm glad to know I wasn't the only one caught off guard.
I'm marking this solved now, thanks everyone.

  • [SOLVED] No boot after update unable to find root device|libmount.so.1

    Hi,
after my most recent update, which was the first for a long time, I am getting the following error when trying to boot my system:
mount: /lib/libmount.so.1: version 'MOUNT_2.20' not found (required by mount)
cat: can'topen '/proc/cmdline': No such file or directory

The same for MOUNT_2.21. This error still persists after chroot manual installs of util-linux and glibc. I tried downgrading util-linux still witout success. Following reply #15 of: https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?pid=1130638 did not solve it either.
I also reinstalled grub just to be on the safe side, but nothing helped.
    Please help.

    Hi,
I have already activated a copy of the CS6 Master Collection. But I am getting activation prompt everytime I updating any application from the AAM for Adobe CS6 Master collection.
Does anybody knows how to fix this problem?
    Any suggestion will be appriciated.
    Thanks

    Hey Jack,
I guess you are facing this issue mainly with the 64-bit version products like After Effects, Premiere Pro, Photoshop Extended 64-bit etc.
Unfortuanately, the issue is yet to resolve. So the best solution currently is to save the serial number onto a Notepad/Text Edit and when it asks for a serial number, just copy and paste it and click next. Once it shows activated, it will run as a Full version and not a Trial mode.
Please check this below URL for latest Updates and suggestions on this issue:

    Hello all.
I managed to solve the problem with the tomboy.
Apparently when I updated the packages dbus-sharp and dbus-glib-sharp an error occurred. With a
    pacman -Sf dbus-sharp-glib dbus-sharp
everything was repaired and now tomboy works.
I discovered this when I tried to compile the tomboy with the abs. The following message appears:
Package file '/usr/lib/pkgconfig/dbus-sharp-glib-1.0.pc' appears to be empty
Package 'dbus-sharp-glib-1.0' has no Name: field
Consider adjusting the PKG_CONFIG_PATH environment variable if you
installed software in a non-standard prefix.
Alternatively, you may set the environment variables DBUS_CFLAGS
and DBUS_LIBS to avoid the need to call pkg-config.
See the pkg-config man page for more details.

    Ok.
The last problem I got was covered here: https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=89043
sudo pacman -S librsvg did the trick. (I don't know why, since it isn't a recompile)
I'm still not 100% sure that all packages have been recompiled for other programs I've not checked to work properly, but I'll mark this as solved.

  • [solved] audio problem after update

hi, after the kernel update of yesterday i have a problem with my audio. after a reboot, my audio is totally absent. i have saw that the pulseaudio process is present and activate, and all graphically is ok (all indicators works well). the strange thing is that if i put headphones and then i releave them, all magically works normally!
Last edited by blauman (2014-06-19 17:12:06)

ok i don't need it...i have solved with
Load equalizer and dbus module on every boot
Edit the file /etc/pulse/default.pa with your favorite editor and append the following lines:
    ### Load the integrated PulseAudio equalizer and D-Bus module
    load-module module-equalizer-sink
    load-module module-dbus-protocol
on wiki of pulseaudio...i don't know why, i had already done it in past, but i don't know why on my default.pa there aren't these lines..seems now it works!

Was the X Server updated, and have you double checked your .xinitrc file to make sure that it's not the cause of the problem?
    run
    cat /var/log/pacman.log | grep $(date +%F) | grep xorg-server
to see if the X Server was updated today.  If you didn't update it today then just substitute the date as follows
    ... | grep yyyy-dd-mm | ...
Please let us (the community) know whether the grep finds anything in pacman's log.
    No worries.
EDIT: If the X Server was updated recently then you can see if downgrading it helps any.
You can see about using downgrade/downgrader to do the actual downgrading for you OR you can check your pkg cache and reinstall an older version of the X Server from there
    downgrade xorg-server
    OR
    downgrader xorg-server
    OR
    ls /var/cache/pacman/pkg -1 | grep -P "xorg-server-.*-VERSION"

  • [SOLVED] Wifi dead after update on my samsung laptop

My wifi started acting up a few weeks ago after one of my weekly updates. After some research I found that the issue was with the new version of wpa_supplicant(2.1-3) and downgrading it to 2.0 fixed it. This worked for a couple of weeks and then the wifi stopped working again; now my wifi won't work at all no matter what version I use. The wifi device is seen and loaded. I can bring up the device.
wlp1s0: <NO-CARRIER,BROADCAST,MULTICAST,UP> mtu 1500 qdisc mq state DOWN mode DORMANT group default qlen 1000
    link/ether b4:b6:76:36:b5:78 brd ff:ff:ff:ff:ff:ff
    I can start wpa_supplicant:
    [root@laptop /]# wpa_supplicant -B -i wlp1s0 -c /etc/wpa_supplicant.conf
    Successfully initialized wpa_supplicant
And the /var/run/wpa_supplicant/wlp1s0 file is there.
But dhcp doesn't seem to want to start:
    [root@laptop /]# dhcpcd wlp1s0
dhcpcd[3544]: sending commands to master dhcpcd process
    iw will give me this:
    [root@laptop work]# iw dev

    Interface wlp1s0
    ifindex 3
    wdev 0x1
    addr b4:b6:76:36:b5:78
    type managed
If I scan the device (not sure way it took a couple of tries, and I removed all the other ssid's to just show the one that I'm trying to connect to):
    [root@laptop work]# iw dev wlp1s0 scan
command failed: Device or resource busy (-16)
    [root@laptop work]# iw dev wlp1s0 scan

Kind of stuck now and not really sure what else I can do. Wifi-menu won't connect either but that seems to be because it brings the wifi connection down ??? Since wpa_supplicant seems to be working now, I kept the update and all packages are updated. I always run 'pacman -Syu' during an update so all the packages should be correct.
    Edit: Solution
Ok, I was messing around with this some more and found that if I replaced /etc/wpa_supplicant/wpa_supplicant.conf with the one that I already had in /etc/wpa_supplicant.conf it started to work. I'm not sure when it stopped looking at /etc/wpa_supplicant.conf and started looking at /etc/wpa_supplicant/wpa_supplicant.conf but that seemed to be the issue.... even though, before this, I couldn't even connect to an open network. Anyway, that 'seemed' to be to issue in this case.

I have two wifi hotspots that worked before the update and now both fail to connect after the update. There are no open spots around me and I don't want to open one here because it's alloted only a tiny amount of data and people would be swallowing it up the minute I opened it. I'll try it once I get home though but I would think, if it was a wpa issue, wpa_supplicant would have failed and it didn't.

  • [Solved] Several problems after update

    Hi.
I updated my system (yaourt -Syua).
Since then I have three problems, I don't know how much connected to each other.
    First,
I can't enter LXDE. After I login, I get back the login screen of xdm.
When I go init 3, and start startx from console, then I get a black screen, until I do AltCtrlF7.
Meanwhile on the console this happens:
    [laca@varch ~]$ startx
    X.Org X Server 1.12.4
    ... etc ... etc ...
errors from xkbcomp are not fatal to the X server
    No protocol specified
waiting for X server to begin accepting connections .
    No protocol specified
    No protocol specified
    No protocol specified
    No protocol specified
    and so on.
    Second,
My .Xauthority and .bash_history files got reset to 0 length.
And every time I log out, or explicitly do a history -w , the .bash_history file gets touched, but remains 0 length.
    Third,
When I ssh with X forwarding to that machine, and want to start an X client, then I get:
X11 connection rejected because of wrong authentication.
(It may be independent of the update.)
    Any help appreciated.
