[SOLVED] No Sound except in mpd

I have a strange behaviour in my sound setup since last week or so. I didn't notice it at first, so I can't tell if it was an update. However I didn't change anything in my configuration. I don't hear any sound from my laptop (a HP Elitebook 8470w), not with the speakers nor with headphones. Except playing music with mpd, this works as usual. I also noticed, that my multimedia keys don't work anymore. Was there any recent change in alsa I missed?
What I tried:
> speaker-test -c 2
speaker-test 1.0.27.2
Playback device is default
Stream parameters are 48000Hz, S16_LE, 2 channels
Using 16 octaves of pink noise
Rate set to 48000Hz (requested 48000Hz)
Buffer size range from 96 to 1048576
Period size range from 32 to 349526
Using max buffer size 1048576
Periods = 4
was set period_size = 262144
was set buffer_size = 1048576
0 - Front Left
1 - Front Right
Time per period = 10.940069
-> No sound

  • No Sound except through headphones

    I have an Envy Phoenix 810 PC with an Envy 23 Monitor with built in speakers running windows 7. I can test sound on the computer with headphones and they work and I can test the internal speakers on the monitor and they work but I cannot get any sound externally without headphones. I called hp support and really got the run-around. This is the same problem with my home computer same configuration except it is running windows 8.1. Both computers are new but I am frustrated with this issue. HP support had me run system recovery on my computer at home with no success. Another support person reinstalled all the drivers but still there is no sound except with headphones. Do you have any suggestions? I have a jack plugged from monitor to computer.

    Hi,
    Envy Phoenix 810 PC is a series of many models/products, what is yours ? How do you connect them ?
    Regards.

  • Error -200 and no sound except start-up tone

    After playing sound over headset my macbook won't play any sounds except the start sound. Furthermore my Itunes won't start anymore and I've got the error -200 ... any help?

    i'm not sure exactly how to restore your original sounds however if you go to control panel->sounds->then the sound tab. it shows all the sounds used for different applications.. i think there is a restore to default at the bottum. you can do that or manually change the sound it makes.
    hope this helps a little.

  • I need help i dropped my phone in water, dried it, and now it wont play sound except for on the headphones

    i dropped my phone in water and now it wont play sound except in headphones and i even dried it!

    You'll have to buy an out of warranty phone at the apple store.
    Just because you dried doesn't mean that there wasn't any damage done.

  • Lost all sounds except ringtone after recent upgrade

    No sound except ringtone after recent upgrade followed by the upgrade fix. Since the ringtone was only affected I didn't notice immediately! If I plug in my headphones everything works. Unable to use volume buttons on side unless headphones are plugged in, the volume symbol with white dots doesn't even appear anymore. The volume control in  itunes music only works when plugged into headphones otherwise it can't be adjusted. Worked with apple support tried everything include a restore to new still no go! It appears that a few people are having the same problem and seems weird that it  happened after last upgrade!

    If you are unable to adjust the volume without headphones even after restoring, then the iPhone thinks it's plugged into a dock or cable.  This is the behavor that will happen if you plug your iPhone in to the car or iHome dock to play you music and sounds, but a docked connection will never play ringtones through the dock connection and headphones override that dock connection which is why your headphones work.
    How does the phone think its connected to a dock?  Well, this can happen if the charging port gets wet at some point or if some trauma happens in there like pushing the cable in when it doesnt fit, etc.
    So it happens even after restoring what do I do?  Service your iPhone. https://selfsolve.apple.com

  • Downloaded new app, sound wouldn't work, made chgs and now no sound except iPod

    So I downloaded a fancy app and the sound wouldn't work.  COntacted the group. switched the toggle to lock screen, now no sounds except iPod, great.  Any/all suggestions much appreciated, so frutstrating.

    The next thing that I would try then is to delete the app. Then reboot the iPad. Then go through the steps that King Penguin posted and see if the sounds return. You can always download the app again via the purchased tab in the App Store.
    Reboot the iPad by holding down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons.
    If that doesn't work, the next step would probably be to reset all settings.
    Settings>General>Reset>Reset All Settings. You will have to enter all of your app preferences and device settings again.

    My iphone 4 does not make any sound except when i have call. Any sound notification for example whatsapp or email or playing song i could not hear a pip, but when blug the earphone i could hear all sound via earphone, any advise??

    Check the Mute switch, which is on the left side of the phone above the volume buttons.

  • No sound except earpiece or speaker

    suddenly my iphone 4 has no sound except from speaker or earpiece

    Well then,
    Lets get troubleshooting hey?
    1) Slient button- make sure this is not showing orange on the left hand side of the iPhone
    2) Take off any case/Screen protectors.
    3) Go to Settings>General>Reset>Reset network settings> wait til the phone does its thing and then test by making a call.
    4) Turn the iPhone off/on
    5) Reset the iPhone- Hold the home button & the silver button on the top of the iPhone down at the same time until you see an Apple (10 seconds or so) then give it a minute-3 before it restarts and then test.
    When you turn your volume up on the iPhone..... Does it think the headphones are in the iPhone??
    6) Restore the iPhone and do not put any information on it after its done until you test it.
    It needs to be tested with no data on it.

    If that doesnt fix it... Hardware issue... Take it in for service

  • Ipod Touch 4th gen has no sound except when headphones are plugged in

    I have checked sound settings, reset the ipod, powered off, and synced it.  Still no sound except when the headphones are plugged in.  Any ideas?

    - Try cleaning out/blowing out the headphone jack. Try inserting/removing the plug a dozen times or so.
    Try the following to rule out a software problem
    - Check also Settings > General > Accessibility > Hearing. Make sure that the sound balance is not set all the way to "R".
    - Reset the iPod. Nothing will be lost
    Reset iPod touch: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
    least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Reset all settings
    Go to Settings > General > Reset and tap Reset All Settings.
    All your preferences and settings are reset. Information (such as contacts and calendars) and media (such as songs and videos) aren’t affected.
    - Restore from backup
    - Restore to factory settings/new iPod.
    - Make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store. Seems you have a bad headphone jack.
    Apple Retail Store - Genius Bar
    Apple will exchange your iPod for a refurbished one for this price. They do not fix yours.
    Apple - iPod Repair price
    A third-party place like the following will replace the jack for less. Google for more.

  • [Solved] Multiple sounds at the same time

    Hello!
    I've just received my new Creative X-Fi Titanium since I was in need of an optical in socket and have spent a while trying to get it to work to my liking.
    I read through the ALSA wiki, read countless posts on the forums such as this one http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?pid=702994, tried several .asoundrc files and of course read the related arch wiki pages without much success.
    Everything is upmixed properly to 5.1 output but I still can't play two sounds at once - with one odd exception:
    When I have mpd playing and start a youtube video, sound will play but it will only output through the 2 front speakers and I can pause and unpause mpd normally, sound will return.
    When I pause mpd and play a youtube video, it gets upmixed properly but mpd returns "error: problems opening sound device".
    Mplayer returns [AO_ALSA] alsa-lib: pcm_hw.c:1291:(snd_pcm_hw_open) open /dev/snd/pcmC0D0p failed: Invalid argument and [AO_ALSA] alsa-lib: pcm_dmix.c:1060:(snd_pcm_dmix_open) unable to open slave.
    Heroes of Newerth returns the same: ALSA lib pcm_dmix.c:1060:(snd_pcm_dmix_open) unable to open slave.

    Good. So file the damned bug report against mpd. Right now would be a good time.
    eyescream wrote:but flash completely blocks sound off for other things.
    See thread. Prove to me that flash/firefox is blocking:
    fuser -v /dev/snd/* /dev/dsp*
    eyescream wrote:The problem now is that mpd only outputs through my front speakers, so it isn't being upmixed anymore.
    Forget about upmixing for the moment, until you've got the ALSA/OSS conflict solved.
    Edit: Use e.g.:
    audio_output {
    type "alsa"
    name "Sound Card"
    options "dev=dmixer"
    device "headphones"
    In /etc/mpd.conf or ~/.mpdconf, where the device string matches an ALSA pcm entry.
    eyescream wrote:What do you mean by not renaming "default" exactly?
    This, of course, from your own ~/.asoundrc
    # change default device:
    pcm.!default {
         type plug
         slave {
        pcm "duplex"
    Comment that section out, for the time being.

  • [SOLVED] No sound in browser

    Hi everyone!
    I recently moved from Ubuntu to Arch (Yeah!). Everything was fine, the installation was quite easy and I found everything I needed with on the official repos and AUR.
    I only have one major problem: There is absolutely no sound in my browser (I tried both Firefox and Chromium). The problem is not only with flash, html5 audio does not work either.
    The sound works in vlc, xmms2 and everything else, except for the browsers. I tried to figure out the problem for hours, looking in many forums and installing different packages.
    I don't know where to go now. I don't really understand how do sound works in Linux and I don't know which information I should give here and where to find it.
    Does anyone have an idea ? Which information should I dump here to help ?
    Thanks !

    Ok I solve my problem.
    I have two sound card: "Generic" (HDMI) and "Generic_1" (Analog). The "alsa: default" device was set to "Generic".
    I only changed the "alsa: default" device to use "Generic_1".
    This post really helped my: https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=121049

  • [SOLVED] No sound in Gnome 3 after upgrade

    Hi,
    After last upgrade, I have no sound in Gnome 3.
    I think all modules are loading:
    lsmod| grep snd
    snd_hda_codec_conexant 47158 1
    snd_hda_intel 25700 4
    snd_hda_codec 97432 2 snd_hda_codec_conexant,snd_hda_intel

    soundcore 5442 1 snd
    also the soundcard is recognized:
    lspci | grep Audio

    cat /proc/asound/cards

    ThinkPad Console Audio Control at EC reg 0x30, fw 6HHT14WW-1.02
    and the user is in aduio group. The problem seems to be similar with this one:
    https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?pid=1159367
    but as I'm not using LXDE, the solution does not work for me.
    Do you have any clues what to do with this?
    Thank you!
    EDIT: hm, the sound started working, when I launched Gnome Music Player Client... Still, any ideas why this happened?
    EDIT2: now it works also after reboot, so it seems like mpd did some mess with the sound. I'm marking this topic as solved, but if someone will know what happened, then I'll be happy just to understand it

  • [SOLVED] No sound through usb soundcard in Google Chromium

    Hi there,
    Before switching to Arch I had used my external usb soundcard in Ubuntu and Kubuntu which worked almost flawlessly except for no sound through Google Chromium in Kubuntu. I thought this may have been isolated when switching KDE on Arch but I'm stilling having the same problem. All audio works through the external soundcard except for Chromium.
    Does anyone know how I can change sound preferences in Chromium or other way to solve this problem?
    Thanks,

    Not sure exactly what I did but I fiddled with the default soundcard configuration and now it works.

  • [SOLVED]No Sound - ALSA - Maybe wrong audio device.

    Yesterday I installed Arch and it has been going well except that I can not get my sound working. Following https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Ad … chitecture I installed alsa-utils and then used alsamixer to unmute channels. While I experimented with the channels I had a youtube video open and so I should have heard something if it had worked.
    I seem to have two sound cards. When I run alsamixer it defaults to the "Intel Haswell HDMI" chip and "Item: S/PDIF". I can unmute the S/PDIF channels but there is no volume bar. I suspect that this device is set as a default somewhere but it is not the one I want to use.
    Hitting F6 and choosing the "HDA Intel PCH" card has many columns. I have them all unmuted and I've played around quite a bit with turning various things up and down. The speaker I have in plugged into the back of the desktop I am using and is attached with both a round pale green connector and a usb connector.
    When I turn up the volume on the <Rear Mic> I can hear the static volume go up on the speaker. So I could change the volume on the speaker but the speaker was not getting audio from the web browser I had open.  When I turn up the volume on the <Front Mic> I can hear a high pitched noise increase, my only guess for where its coming from is the tiny speaker that I have plugged right into the motherboard.
    I've tried researching and I would like to try and change the default sound card like in this thread: https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=186597. But I'm afraid that I'm newer to Arch/Linux than those people or at least I'm confused trying to follow that advice. My /etc/modprobe.d directory is empty. If I made a .conf file like in that answer I would not know what to name it.
    Here is the output of some relevant (hopefully) commands:

    Thank you ewaller as well, but rather than look at aplay -l I think I will mark this thread as [SOLVED].
    The thing I'm still curious about is how did you know what to name the file  /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf ?
    Time for me to figure out how to get the headphone jack working.

  • [SOLVED] No sound in flash

    In trying to get my MIDI keyboard to play in Rosegarden, ALSA stopped working like it used to. I used a USB MIDI cable to connect my MIDI controller to my computer.
    Looks as if snd-usb-audio is now card 0. To make a long story short, finally got sound to work by creating a /etc/asound.conf
    pcm.!default {
    type hw
    card 1
    ctl.!default {
    type hw
    card 1
    Everything seems to be working fine except for flash, which I'm using nspluginwrapper. Tried reinstalling nspluginwrapper and nspluginwrapper-flash, still no sound. I'm at a loss.  Here's some pertinent info:

    FIXED
    I re-edited my /etc/asound.conf:
    pcm.!default {
    type plug
    slave.pcm "dmixer"
    pcm.dsp1 {
    type plug
    slave.pcm "dmixer"
    pcm.dsp0 {
    type plug
    slave.pcm "dmixer"
    pcm.dmixer {
    type dmix
    ipc_key 1024
    slave {
    pcm "hw:1,0"
    period_time 0
    period_size 1024
    buffer_size 8192
    rate 48000 #many new cards are 48000 only
    bindings {
    0 0
    1 1
    ctl.dmixer {
    type hw
    card 1
    And flash is now working.

    Okay, my sound now magically works for flash.  I initially had not restarted my pc after installing the above mentioned pulseaudio packages.  I didn't think it necessary, not even sure if it is the restart that fixed it, but problem solved.
    Though i did change my .asound.rc from
    pcm.!default {
    type plug
    slave {
    pcm "hw:0,0"
    ctl.!default {
    type hw
    card 0
    to
    pcm.!default {
    type hw
    card 0
    ctl.!default {
    type hw
    card 0
    Not sure if that did anything
