[SOLVED] No sound in browser

Hi everyone!
I recently moved from Ubuntu to Arch (Yeah!). Everything was fine, the installation was quite easy and I found everything I needed with on the official repos and AUR.
I only have one major problem: There is absolutely no sound in my browser (I tried both Firefox and Chromium). The problem is not only with flash, html5 audio does not work either.
The sound works in vlc, xmms2 and everything else, except for the browsers. I tried to figure out the problem for hours, looking in many forums and installing different packages.
I don't know where to go now. I don't really understand how do sound works in Linux and I don't know which information I should give here and where to find it.
Does anyone have an idea ? Which information should I dump here to help ?
Thanks !

Ok I solve my problem.
I have two sound card: "Generic" (HDMI) and "Generic_1" (Analog). The "alsa: default" device was set to "Generic".
I only changed the "alsa: default" device to use "Generic_1".
This post really helped my: https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=121049

  • [SOLVED] No Sound on Fresh Install

    Well, I decided to try Arch. I was very proud of myself for managing to install everything. I even loaded KDE. I wanted to try a KDE only OS for a while.
    Well, all my pride was stomped out quicjky, in that I have no sound.  I did the following:
    1. installed: alsa-utils, alsa-oss, alsa-plugins
    2. unmuted the sound using alsamixer
    3. ran alsaconf, but found no supported drivers.
    4. Added @alsa as a daemon and rebooted
    No sound from browser. Tried an internet radio station with clementine and got:
    Could not open audio device for playback.
    Below I have tried to be helpful and posted as much output from various commands as I could. I am a newbie, and do not work in the computer indiustry. I actually do this for fun.

    I tried to play a .wav but failed. I followed everything on the alsa wiki page. I can still hear the KDE test sounds quite well. My gut tells me it's got to be something simple since I can get some sound! Ugh. I don't want to give up, but I am getting closer. I did not like Chakra.

  • Shuttle quickly in Sound & Music Browser?

    Hi,
    When I'm in FCP X and open the Sound & Music Browser (my iTunes Library) - I see al my songs.  Good!
    If I want to listen to one, but fast forward it, of shuttle around within the song quickly - is there a way to do this?
    I can only click and play on a song to hear it, or select it.  But if I want to hear different parts of it quickly, I don't seem to be able to shuttle around - unless I specifically go and open iTunes - which then kinda defeats the purpose of accessing it quickly while in FCP X!
    Hopefully one of you experts can do this?
    Thanks,
    Larry

    Going to try and explain my situation a bit better.
    Say I'm playing a game, or there is a sound playing that resembles a heart beat. The heart beats, then there is no sound, then beats again. Well my music from iTunes, is quieter when the heart beats, and goes back to normal volume when there is no sound playing from my browser.

    AlsaMixeer v1.0.27.2
    Pulseaudio 4.0
    Audacity 2.0.3 (official package from Arch)
    But, when I record with Audacity, playback (before exporting), is shoddy.  I noticed my dB levels lower than normal when monitoring my audio/recording in Audacity.  Before I remember I had to even LOWER the default dB level of recording in pavucontrol/sound center.  I've done this many times on Arch, and I have had no new hardware.  I have tried changing the output/input device on the main screen in Audacity several times to no effect.  I never had to before.  Now, on Arch I have always had to set the inital dB recording level via sound prefs, not via Audacity as the "Input Volume" slider on Audacity was always grayed out, but never an issue before.
    If you need additional information, please let me know.
    Thank you

    first of all, if your pulseaudio setup is working for you there's no reason to break it really..
    historically, the reason for using sound servers like pulseaudio over alsa, is that some sound cards don't support hardware mixing with alsa, which means you coudn't play audio from eg. audacious and youtube at the same time. Nowadays alsa has software mixing support (via dmix plugin if I'm not mistaken) so Its not usually an issue any more.
    I have very limited experience with pulseaudio, and can't be sure of the differences. Generally I believe alsa can do most of the stuff pulseaudio can, but if you've ever looked at configuring alsa, you might know it could be a real pita especially in more advanced setups. From my limited experience with pulseaudio, I think it could be easier to set up on some cases and often just works out of the box. I could also have some audio over network capabilities that alsa might lack, but that again is just my assumption.
    also I'm pretty sure pulseaudio is required for some desktop environments like gnome.
    just use whatever method works for you
    I remember having that EXACT issue back in ~04-06.  That was the most annoying thing, and the reason why I started to use pulse back then.  Oh I know the pitfalls of alsa, which is why I understand pulse co-existing on Arch's cinnamon package setup.  Cool, well thanks for the advice!

  • [Solved] Flash No Sound In Browser

    Hi All,
    Having problems getting audio from any flash video. I am currently running 64 bit arch (3.5.4-1-ARCH). I have ALSA installed and working. I listen to Amarok for radio and mplayer to watch movies.
    I have my .asoundrc with this
    pcm.!default {
    type hw
    card 0
    ctl.!default {
    type hw
    card 0
    Output of aplay -l

    In Phonon all the devices are set to the sound card and verified testing (via test button). Still sounds doesn't work with any flash application in Chromium or FF. Upon running either of them from the command line I don't see any error.
    I was afraid that another program grabbed the sound devices so I rebooted the desktop and first thing opened is FF and still no sound. YES I did make sure every thing is unmutted (fell for that in the past   )
    Also to add I am running Xmonad as windows manager so no Gnome or KDE desktop.
    Update: Updated arch and still no change. Seems like Flash to using wrong sounds device but I don't know how else to force other than asoundrc
    Any ideas?

    I would really not like to install Pulse.
    I can try a couple of reboot and reinstall flash plugin but it looks like they never quite fixed it nor found the cause. The problem just doesn't add up. Will post back with results.
    Update: Reinstalling flash/rebooting several times didn't fix anything

  • [SOLVED]No Sound - ALSA - Maybe wrong audio device.

    Yesterday I installed Arch and it has been going well except that I can not get my sound working. Following https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Ad … chitecture I installed alsa-utils and then used alsamixer to unmute channels. While I experimented with the channels I had a youtube video open and so I should have heard something if it had worked.
    I seem to have two sound cards. When I run alsamixer it defaults to the "Intel Haswell HDMI" chip and "Item: S/PDIF". I can unmute the S/PDIF channels but there is no volume bar. I suspect that this device is set as a default somewhere but it is not the one I want to use.
    Hitting F6 and choosing the "HDA Intel PCH" card has many columns. I have them all unmuted and I've played around quite a bit with turning various things up and down. The speaker I have in plugged into the back of the desktop I am using and is attached with both a round pale green connector and a usb connector.
    When I turn up the volume on the <Rear Mic> I can hear the static volume go up on the speaker. So I could change the volume on the speaker but the speaker was not getting audio from the web browser I had open.  When I turn up the volume on the <Front Mic> I can hear a high pitched noise increase, my only guess for where its coming from is the tiny speaker that I have plugged right into the motherboard.
    I've tried researching and I would like to try and change the default sound card like in this thread: https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=186597. But I'm afraid that I'm newer to Arch/Linux than those people or at least I'm confused trying to follow that advice. My /etc/modprobe.d directory is empty. If I made a .conf file like in that answer I would not know what to name it.

    I followed Head_on_a_Stick's advice and the speaker is now working! Thank you so much Head_on_a_Stick. The one other time I posted on this forum was last February and you helped me out then too. You are my favorite!
    Thank you ewaller as well, but rather than look at aplay -l I think I will mark this thread as [SOLVED].
    The thing I'm still curious about is how did you know what to name the file  /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf ?
    Time for me to figure out how to get the headphone jack working.

  • Only iTunes shows up in the Music and Sound media browser

    I just upgraded to FCP 10.1 and I'm noticing that the media browser only show iTunes content in Music and Sound. No sound effects (foley, etc.) are included as before.
    Is this simply that FCP no longer includes these or should there be something other than iTunes there?

    Thanks Tom. After a few reboots, music is back. Thanks again. Looking for the "solved" button and nothing. I will marked solved when I am able to.
    Thanks again.
    Best.

    Hm,
    my flashplugin is working again with sound ...
    No clue why that happened all of sudden.
    Anyway the problem is gone So I'll mark this as solved for now.

  • [solved] No sound, ALSA finds soundcard, pulseaudio does not.

    Problem:
    pulseaudio can't find my soundcard (or it can't find ALSA, not sure). It falls back to a dummy-output and no input so i can't play sounds or use my mic.
    First appeared when:
    Installing software updates like a month ago. I ignored it at first in the hopes it will resolve itself with the next update an few dates later. It didn't so far. None of the packets I updated had linux|pulse|alsa|sound|audio in its name. So i guess it just triggered the problem in a indirect way.
    What did not help:
    Reinstalling packets with pulse|alsa|sound|audio in its name.
    Deleting ${HOME}/.pulse* .
    Rebooting.
    Resetting /etc/pulse/* or /etc/asound.conf to the defaults of the packaes they come with.
    Adding or removing my user to the audio group.
    Googling. Other threads i this forum.
    Additional infos:
    (Stuff that was requested from others which had similar problems. No other [solved]-threads were helping me so far.)
    /dev/dsp does not exist.
    fuser -v /dev/snd/* returns nothing
    aplay whatever.wav produces no sound.
    aplay -D sysdefault whatever.wav works.
    Using Gnome 3 started with gdm.

  • [Solved] Multiple sounds at the same time

    Hello!
    I've just received my new Creative X-Fi Titanium since I was in need of an optical in socket and have spent a while trying to get it to work to my liking.
    I read through the ALSA wiki, read countless posts on the forums such as this one http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?pid=702994, tried several .asoundrc files and of course read the related arch wiki pages without much success.
    Everything is upmixed properly to 5.1 output but I still can't play two sounds at once - with one odd exception:
    When I have mpd playing and start a youtube video, sound will play but it will only output through the 2 front speakers and I can pause and unpause mpd normally, sound will return.
    When I pause mpd and play a youtube video, it gets upmixed properly but mpd returns "error: problems opening sound device".
    Mplayer returns [AO_ALSA] alsa-lib: pcm_hw.c:1291:(snd_pcm_hw_open) open /dev/snd/pcmC0D0p failed: Invalid argument and [AO_ALSA] alsa-lib: pcm_dmix.c:1060:(snd_pcm_dmix_open) unable to open slave.
    Heroes of Newerth returns the same: ALSA lib pcm_dmix.c:1060:(snd_pcm_dmix_open) unable to open slave.

    Good. So file the damned bug report against mpd. Right now would be a good time.
    eyescream wrote:but flash completely blocks sound off for other things.
    See thread. Prove to me that flash/firefox is blocking:
    fuser -v /dev/snd/* /dev/dsp*
    eyescream wrote:The problem now is that mpd only outputs through my front speakers, so it isn't being upmixed anymore.
    Forget about upmixing for the moment, until you've got the ALSA/OSS conflict solved.
    Edit: Use e.g.:
    audio_output {
    type "alsa"
    name "Sound Card"
    options "dev=dmixer"
    device "headphones"
    In /etc/mpd.conf or ~/.mpdconf, where the device string matches an ALSA pcm entry.
    eyescream wrote:What do you mean by not renaming "default" exactly?
    This, of course, from your own ~/.asoundrc
    # change default device:
    pcm.!default {
         type plug
         slave {
        pcm "duplex"
    Comment that section out, for the time being.

  • (Solved) one sound application at a time

    hello,archers! I moved from gnome to Kde(at last) and faced the issue. E.G if amarok plays musik there's no system notifications and smplayer plays no sound t.i only one programm can use alsa at a time. I have latest kde, alsa and gstreamer and xine backends for phonon. alsamixer shows everything's ok. What should  I do? thnx.

    Ok. I've been able to solve the problem by creating /home/user/.asoundrc file with this content
    pcm.softvolPhonon {
        type softvol
        slave.pcm "default:CARD=0"
        control {
            name "Phonon"
            card 0
        min_dB -51.0
        max_dB 0.0
        resolution 100
        hint {
            show on
            description "My Soundcard with extra Volume Control"
    Then I just choose Phonon as the mail output in sound preferences. Solved.

  • [Solved]No sound anymore (ALSA/PulseAudio)

    Ok so I have no idea why I have no sound anymore, I didn't install anything...
    Anyway, that's what I've tried:
    -Check if mixer are all up in alsamixer
    -Try to play a bit with pavucontrol
    -Reboot
    -Rerun pulseaudio with verbose
    -Mute and unmute with physical button (I don't know why but I used to get this problem and it used to be solved just doing this)
    -Googgling and searching this forum

  • How to solve no sound in XP on new PCs after reboot. solution

    hello all ..
    how to know Many of us have chosen to install on their computers windows XP
    and I think we all have a problem with sound.
    When we already find correct drivers that make the sound appear,
    there is another problem, after restart, the computer lost the driver.
    and now I write, what to do, that it was not.
    I do not mean to put in the startup file
    that will be at every restart, Restarted UAA BUS DRIVER.
    I mean to be a sound and speaker icon next to the clock without unnecessary processes ..
    to solve the problem and enjoy the sound, you must copy from the computer where is installed Windows Vista SP2 x32 or x64
    the file HDAUDBUS.SYS who find in Windows \ system32 \ DriverStore \ FileRepository \ HDAUDBUS.INF
    then in our system, XP x32 or x64-based open device manager and then open the System device
    and click on "Microsoft UAA Bus Driver" and select Update Driver
    and then point out the place where you keep a file Hdaudbus.sys copied from Vista.
    we do this with both "UAA bus driver" from device manager forced to manually update the driver,
    and after enjoy the sounds and loudspeaker icon after every restart
    vista x32 Hdaudbus.sys--> 548kb for XP x32 sp2/sp3
    vista x64 Hdaudbus.sys--> 927kb for XP x64 sp2

  • [Solved] No sound on Dell XPS 13 2015 (9343) with BIOS A03

    I have been unable to get sound to work on my new 2015 Dell XPS 13 Developer Edition running kernel 4.0.1-1-ARCH.  Arch is the only OS installed.
    I have checked the wiki page and this forum post, which seems to indicate it should work with this configuration out of the box.
    However, audio does not play through the speakers (the speakers were working in the original Ubuntu 14.04 installation) and when I tried to un-mute the volume, as described in the ALSA wiki page I received the following message:
    $ amixer sset Master unmute
    amixer: Unable to find simple control 'Master',0
    I am not sure what other pertinent information to post, please forgive my ignorance and let me know. Thank you for your assistance.

    I have installed the patched kernel and rebooted twice but am still encountering the same problem. The only difference to altercation's instructions is that the aur package has been updated:
    $ uname -r
    4.0.2-1-xps13-alt
    The output of amixer is identical to before. However, there are now two headphone channels visible in alsamixer, which were not present under the stock kernel.

    The channel which is set at 20 gives a continuous "beep" (sine tone?) through headphones, when they are plugged into the jack.

    The only other thing I have noticed in ~20 minutes of use are some graphical artefacts and flickering that occur with this kernel.  I have previously set the Intel graphics acceleration to uxa, as described in the wiki, because of issues with virtual terminals and resuming from suspend. The graphical issues I am currently encountering are very minor, however.
    Update:
    Thanks to fumlead for this post. The problem seems to have been that the wrong card was set as default. Creating /etc/asound.conf and adding this:
    pcm.!default {
    type hw
    card 1
    has solved the problem under both the stock and aur kernels. I am going to stick with the stock kernel because of the graphical issues encountered with the alternate kernel. I am not currently using the audio jack for a microphone, which I believe should work for the alternate kernel but not the stock one.
    There is a small bug with the speakers not automatically being silenced when headphones are plugged in, but hopefully that will be fixed in kernel 4.1.
    Thank you to everyone who viewed and commented in this thread and special thanks to fumlead.
