[SOLVED] No sound for optical / spdif output with alsa

When running speaker-test I get no sound from my speakers no matter what options I try in alsamixer.

Have you tried other device options in .asoundrc? According to the ALSA wiki, the digital device is the one marked IEC958. That would be card 1 device 1.
You might want to read that entire topic in the ALSA wiki if you have not done so already. It has methods for directly testing the digital output using aplay.

  • [SOLVED]No sound on new i686 install with ALSA using SB Audigy 2 ZS

    Previously posted at https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=146400
I replaced Xubuntu 12.04 on my 32bit legacy workstation which uses an Audigy 2 ZS soundcard (emu10k1) and analog outputs to a 5.1 amplified speaker set.
The old reliable "speaker-test -c2" produces no sound.
I use QasMixer and a screenshot of it's prior settings is at http://i.stack.imgur.com/h4vOe.png/ and the Arch setting are here http://img826.imageshack.us/img826/532/qasmixer.png
The ALSA information script is at http://pastebin.com/iRJamGBK. Note that is was run without USB microphone attached & with the mobo sound disabled in the BIOS.
I have been using the ALSA Wiki https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Alsa and everything seems to check out.
I know the sound system is working because it works in the dual-boot WinXP.  It also produces an audible "thump" when unmuting Analog C with alsamixer.
I am perplexed and looking for suggestions.
Also here is the termout as suggested by Arch Wiki AKSA… ‥ .

Ok - this is getting weird.
After doing some other stuff regards to networking, I tried the alsamixer again.
...and the default soudcard was changed to the USB microphone?
Now there were no changes to hardware, not even reseating PCI cards.  The only change to the BIOS was, after booting from a CD using the BIOS boot menu (F12), the BIOS reset the hard disk boot order to its default (a non bootable drive) and I had to go into the BIOS to set the boot disk to the one with the boot loader.
So I ran aplay -l, and now the card is at 1 vice 2?
...so I edit ~/.asoundrc & /etc/asound.conf to match this, restart alsa, and now alsamixer shows the audigy card as the default.
    But still zilch from speaker-test.

When I installed Xubintu 12.04 on this hardware not too long ago, the only problem I had (with the audio) was to set the default sound card and unmute the Audigy Analog/Digital Output Jack (aka <Audigy A> )  in alsamixer.

  • Optical SPDIF output stopped working- why?

I recently installed a larger HD and more RAM in my 1.63MHz Mini. After getting buttoned back up I noticed the optical SPDIF output stopped working (as in NO laser visible). Is there any possibility that this could be related to the OS (10.5.8)? Seems unlikely since it was fine before installation.
I really need this as it is my only option for interfacing with my playback system.
    Rich

    Hi Rich,
    Long shot, but...
Open Audio Midi Setup in Applications>Utilities, see the input & output options & KHz setting there, some things will change it for their own use, then not set it back.
Have you done a PRAM reset, CMD+Option+p+r...

In fact, do 3 in a row, takes a bit of time.

  • [SOLVED]No sound for user after new motherboard installation

So I installed a new motherboard, and thus a new soundchip. The system boots, it works fine, except for the fact that I just don't have any sound. MPD and mpv/mplayer don't give me any sound. I do, however, get sound from youtube in firefox. When I start a video in VLC, it tells me:
    Audio output failed:
The audio device "default" could not be used:
    No such device.
When I try to start alsamixer, I get: "cannot open mixer: No such device"
When I try to start alsamixer with sudo, it works...the levels are fine and the channels unmuted. Starting a video as root also gives me sound. Here is some output from mpv:

As usual, I try forever for fix it, then finally post a topic on the forums and immediately afterwards I find the error and fix it. I had an old ~/.asoundrc that was pointing to the now obsolete soundcard. Deleted that and now it works.

I use Windows for gaming (in virtualbox) on America's Army, so good audio is a must when you play against the best.
The reason I state that is because those lack the features I need. I am trying to find gnome-sound-properties and since I needed sound working very fast, and a distro that already has it installed, I am currently on Ubuntu (please do not harass me or insult me about this as I hate it very much and I need to get back to software development) since all I need to do is go to System > Preferences > Sound. Is a picture of what I am looking for:

What card/chip? do you have a custom /etc/asound.conf or ~/.asoundrc?

  • Export to DV needed to keep sound for AVI files burned with iDVD

I have recently found out that in order to have sound throughout the DVDs that I burn, I must first convert AVI files to DV. This however distorts wide screen video files, thus I am wondering one of two things; the first being if I can convert the files to another type that will not distort the picture and two if there is a way to convert AVI files to DV without changing the picture at all.

I am having the same problem. But it's even weirder. Any .avi file I created using my Flip Ultra camera will play with sound. One or two .avi movies I've d/l'd from the 'net will also play with sound. The remainder will not play with sound on QT (7.5). I have VLC, Real and DivX Player loaded, and all .avi files play on those players with sound, no problem.
Now, my Library/Components folder is empty. My Library/QuickTime folder has the following:
    3ivxVideoCodec.component
    AC3MovieImport.component
    AC3MovieImport.component
    CanonMJPEGAVI.component
    CanonText.component
    Flip4Mac WMV Advanced.component
    Flip4Mac WMV Export.component
    Flip4Mac WMV Import.component
    XVid_Codec 1.0 alpha.component
    ZyGoAudioS.component
    ZyGoMJ2K.component
    ZyGoTimeCode.component
I followed the instructions on this page, but it still isn't working:

  • What's needed for Optical IN/decoding with Xtremegam

I've been poking around the net and this board trying to find an answer to my question, but I haven't yet found a definate answer. I have the Creative X-Fi Xtremegamer (NOT fatalty) card and a nice 5. speaker set that I would like to use with an optical audio source, namely an HD-DVD player. I initially figured that I would be able to use my soundcard with a flexijack compatible cable to connect the card to the player and set it up to decode the audio and run it through the 3 jack analog connection to my speakers. The research I've done has only been confusing.
So my question is: What do I need to input digital optical (S/PDIF) into my card and run it out through my 5. speakers?Message Edited by nx_2000 on 08-9-200709:07 PM

  • [SOLVED] No sound from speakers, headphones work (laptop, ALSA)

Sorry about another "No sound"-thread . So, the headphones work just fine, I can play music or Youtube-videos or whatever but the speakers on my laptop stay mute no matter what I do. I even tested the speakers with a Ubuntu CD to check if I've broken them somehow.
I've been having this odd problem for a week or so, I don't know since I usually use the headphones on my laptop anyway.
    lspci|grep Audio shows:
00:14.2 Audio device: ATI Technologies Inc SBx00 Azalia (Intel HDA)
01:00.1 Audio device: ATI Technologies Inc RV620 Audio device [Radeon HD 34xx Series]
With running 'amixer' I get sh*tload of stuff
    lsmod|grep snd
    snd_seq_oss 35584 0
    snd_seq_midi_event 9344 1 snd_seq_oss
    snd_seq 58336 4 snd_seq_oss,snd_seq_midi_event
    snd_seq_device 9364 2 snd_seq_oss,snd_seq

    soundcore 9632 1 snd
Could it be a driver issue? I just need some cryptic parameter to some module, right?
I've been playing around with alsamixer to fix this problem, maybe I've just messed things up a bit more? I really don't know much about ALSA, so the answer might just be obvious to some.
    Thanks!

Solved by compiling & installing new alsa-driver. You can get it from here: http://ftp.kernel.org/pub/linux/kernel/ … 12.tar.bz2

  • Built-in NVIDIA sound chip doesn't play with ALSA

I have a motherboard that has a built-in sound card. It's made by NVIDIA, the lspci line for it is below.
00:07.0 Audio device: nVidia Corporation MCP78S [GeForce 8200] High Definition Audio (rev a1)
When I run alsaconf, it finds the card and it thinks everything works. When it ends, I don't even get an error message. If I try to run alsamixer, it spits this out:
alsamixer: function snd_ctl_open failed for default: No such file or directory
However, all the sound modules are loaded! lsmod | grep snd shows this:
    snd_hda_intel 370736 0
    snd_seq_oss 31872 0
    snd_seq_midi_event 8192 1 snd_seq_oss
    snd_seq 49968 4 snd_seq_oss,snd_seq_midi_event
    snd_seq_device 8332 2 snd_seq_oss,snd_seq
    snd_hwdep 8964 1 snd_hda_intel
    snd_pcm_oss 40192 0

    snd_timer 21384 2 snd_seq,snd_pcm
    snd_page_alloc 9224 2 snd_hda_intel,snd_pcm
    snd_mixer_oss 16512 1 snd_pcm_oss
    snd 50724 9 snd_hda_intel,snd_seq_oss,snd_seq,snd_seq_device,snd_hwdep,snd_pcm_oss,snd_pcm,snd_timer,snd_mixer_oss
    soundcore 8160 1 snd
The *weirdest* part about this is on my first boot, it didn't work at all and I didn't even try to get it to work yet. I installed X it worked, I rebooted for something completely unrelated. I booted and sound magically worked! Not complaining, I was listening to music but then I rebooted for another non-sound-related issue, and now the sound is broken again. I can't figure this out at all! Anyone have any ideas?

Well, I found out that I need the module "snd-hda-intel" -- I think. But it doesn't seem to be on my system despite documentation saying it's still available in 2.6.27. Do I really need to recompile my kernel just for this one module? I'd really prefer not to  have to deal with that. If I do "modprobe snd-" and press tab twice, it shows me this list of modules:

    Nothing "hda" related.
UPDATE: According to this and alsaconf (I checked /etc/modprobe.d/sound) I *do* need the "snd-hda-intel" module. I'm running the standard arch kernel from pacman, do I really have to recompile my kernel...?
UPDATE: Turns out I do have the module I need. I don't know why it didn't show up. In other news, I get a new dmesg error!
    hda-intel: no codecs initialized
So, it seems like I need to load snd_hda_codec... but that was "merged" with snd_hda_intel back around 2.6.23. Any ideas?

  • Using back SPDIF Motherboards outputs with X-Fi Titanium Fatal1ty Pro Series

I have an Asus Rampage Formula that comes with Digital Coaxial and Toslink outputs and a PCI-E sound card, Supreme FX II.
I was able to use both back SPDIF outputs with out any cable, you the card in the PCI-E slot, but I have change my card with a X-Fi Titanium Fatalty Pro Series, no im not able to use any of those outlets, im used the the Coax to my Home theater and the Toslink to me headphones.
Now I can only use the Toslink of the digital output of the X-Fi with my headphones but im not able to use the ports of the mobo to my home theater, is there a way I can use them? the card doesnt have a Coaxial output and thats the problem.
Also, my mobo has 4 pin SPDIF output port, so you can connect something there, but it seems that there are any cable from the output port of the mobo to the audio card....
I found this but Im thinking it might not work...

  • [Solved] No sound after reboot [FUJITSU-SIEMENS Amilo Pro V3205]

I have an Intel 82801G sound card, which works fine with alsa/snd-hda-intel after I configure it with alsaconf. But after reboot alsa doesn't work until I reconfigure it again.
Here stays, that it should work properly, but it doesn't.
    Please, could somebody help me?
Edited: Or could somebody tell me how should I step by step install it? (I tried arch wiki)

  • [SOLVED] No sound on SPDIF with Intel ICH10 Sound Card

    Hi everyone,
I'm coming from Fedora 12 and recently got a fresh installed Archlinux. I'm very satisfied by the distribution and everything works just as expect for the moment, except one thing : SPDIF output of my sound card.
I installed the following packages :
    $ pacman -Qs alsa
    local/alsa-firmware 1.0.20-2
    ALSA firmware package
    local/alsa-lib 1.0.22-1
An alternative implementation of Linux sound support

    Extra alsa plugins
    local/alsa-utils 1.0.22-2

    The following command :
    $ aplay -D front:CARD=Intel,DEV=0 tmp/Norrlanda.wav
gives me sound on the analog (HP) output but this one :
    $ aplay -D iec958:CARD=Intel,DEV=0 tmp/Norrlanda.wav
gives absolutly nothing (I tested the HDMI output and it's fully functionnal).
I unmuted everything that could be unmuted on alsamixer and tested varied combo of options snd_hda_intel model=XXXX (as I read that those type of card can have issue of this kind). I try to delete the /etc/asound.state file, various configuration in /etc/asound.conf. But nothing.
In last resort, I rebooted on a F12 LiveCD and there… everything works fine ! The SPDIF output works just great, without any manipulation (with the same command as above). I tried to import the configuration of /etc/alsa, /etc/pulse and /etc/modprobe.d from this F12 LiveCD (looking if there was any special options about sound card I can just copy/paste to Archlinux) but this failed one more time.
I really really don't see what I can do to solve this problem (and I already spend 2 entire days on this issue without any result… frustrating). So if someone's got a solution or suggestion (some configurations I can try) on this issue, any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thx to jonnor on the IRC Archlinux Channel, it works now !!
For everyone experiencing the same problem with DG45 intel sound card (Codec: IDT 92HD73E1X5 to be accurate), the documented module is not the right one. Use model=no-jd if you want to have the SPDIF output functionnal.

  • [solved] no sound with multimedia apps using Pulseaudio Dummy drive

It seems audio issues are kindof frequent atm, but I couldn't solve the strange issue using the informations provided in the threads nor the wiki
    Issue:
One app plays audio just fine: Deadbeef Audio player, but no activity shows up in Pavucontrol while playing.
Deadbeef uses default Alsa outpput (currently Pulse audio server)
The other multimedia that I use or tried (mplayer, VLC and paplay test.wav) play files with no sound to be heard. Pavucontrol just shows 'dummy output' activity
as for mplayer that is the case with default pulse and alsa audio drivers
    Context:
1/ Recently switched from ALSA to PulseAudio
    Have no  ~/.asoundrc
    2/ First appeared when:
Installed software updates last week. I lazily hoped it will resolve itself with the next update which it didn't so far. None of the packets I updated had linux|pulse|alsa|sound|audio in its name.
Another issue appeared at the same time: no software is able to play any media from the DVD drive. The optical drive itself is well recognized whether by 'lsscsi' or /proc/sys/dev/cdrom/info
3/ PulseAudio did not start today after booting the system
    $ pulseaudio --start

I guess it might be a rather basic configuration step that I missed and am blind to see. If so, sorry for wasting your time :-/ Hint appreciated.

Read how to post correctly to get English output.

Really? What do you think relevant_snd_module is? When you copy something from another thread, maybe it would be wise to read through it first. I tried to explain that there is no relevant_snd_module, it is a hint to the user, yes you, to use the module that is relevant in users case, which often is snd_hda_intel, which again is also mentioned in the other thread. Read it and correct your post accordingly please.
As for the issue at hand, is module-suspend-on-idle loaded? If so, disable and unload it. Start PA with '-vvvv' switch and post the log here. You might want to try defaulting the configuration for PA, meaning delete your ~/.config/pulse. Does your GPU have a hdmi sound card?
Check if you can get sound output with PA killed through speaker-test:
    speaker-test -c 8 -t wav -D plug:"dmix:{CARD PCH DEV 0}"
    speaker-test -c 2 -t wav -D plug:"dmix:{CARD PCH DEV 0}"
Both should work launched in that order at the same time.

  • [SOLVED] Low sound with ALSA

Hi! I'm using alsa on a laptop with master, speaker and PCM at 100%, and I still can't get an output as loud as I'd like.
On ubuntu with pulseaudio, I had the option of setting the volume to 120% on the sound preferences menu, which made a desirable volume level for me. Is there an equivalent thing in arch? Is this like setting PCM to something higher than 0b?
    Cheers!

Just installed pulseaudio. Not really a solution to the name of this thread, since I didn't get a loud volume with ALSA, but it solves my problem of having low volume on my PC
