[Solved] No Usable Pacman Repositories Configured

I had the liblzma.so.0 problem and tought pacman was the problem. I tried to reinstall pacman several time and find out that the liblzma.so.0 symlink was the problem.
Now pacman don't work I have the following message:
No Usable Pacman Repositories Configured
Here is the pacman -v output:
Root : /
Conf File : /usr/local/etc/pacman.conf
DB Path : /usr/local/var/lib/pacman/
Cache Dirs: /usr/local/var/cache/pacman/pkg/
Lock File : /usr/local/var/lib/pacman/db.lck
Log File : /usr/local/var/log/pacman.log

Erreur: aucune opération spécifiée (utiliser -h pour l'aide)
That wrong! /usr/local/ shouldn't be there but I am unable to change it!

  • No Usable Pacman Repositories Configured

    Before we continue, I want to say that this is an Arch system and the following has to do with pacman-3.2.1.
    Just for the sake of open source, I decided that I wanted to compile pacman, which it seems I successfully did, but there is a minor issue also when I execute it.
    $ pacman -Syu
    error: no usable package repositories configured.
    I did a Google search, and found this thread where the guy successfully solved this problem after doing exactly what Cerebral said and editing /etc/pacman.conf. I did not find any other results from Google though.
    To compile it, I did
    $ ./configure
    $ make
    $ make install
    Which is exactly how the pacman homepage said how to do it and how most other things are compiled too, which since I didn't use --prefix=/usr, it originally ended up /usr/local/bin like anything else would and I originally attempt to run it there using /usr/local/bin/pacman -Syu, which gave the same error, then I attempted what Cerebral said, but that did not work either and the same error is produced. I had the original pacman binary inside of my root directory, and it worked fine before I foolish removed it so I cannot test it right now (I am not concerned about it really because the goal is to compile pacman and use that one instead, but certainly it would've helped to know if /etc/pacman.conf is setup right after removing the original /etc/pacman.conf by mistake not paying attention too much to the --sysconfdir=/etc trigger - again not a real issue for me). Cerebral recommended that the OP of that thread/starter of that thread to issue:
    $ ./configure --prefix=/usr --sysconfdir=/etc --localstatedir=/var
    $ make || return 1
    $ make install || return 1
    I believe he said that it shouldn't really be done with DESTDIR in his thread so I removed that part, but I also did try it with DESTDIR for the sake of saying I tried it if anyone wants to mention how I deviated from his post. He said what was important was the triggers on the ./configure line.
    I was thinking my problem has something to do with repo-add (like I need to use it), but trying to figure out how to get that to work was hopeless because I couldn't find any db.pkg.tar.gz file, which is what I think it needs (the examples uses /path/to/your/repo.db.pkg.tar.gz, I am not entirely sure if it is a *.pkg.tar.gz  extension and db is just to say repo database or if *.db.pkg.tar.gz is the extension), but I did try using it with the contents located in /var/cache/pacman/pkg/ and /var/lib/pacman/. I viewed it's man/info page, and the online documentation is the exact same. Again, I think that's what I need to learn to understand, or at least it would be good to know, right, haha, but also that since I do not know much about repo-add, maybe it wouldn't be the solution. It's just an educated guess.
    This is what my current /etc/pacman.conf looks like.

    Which was generated by Cerebral's method for compiling, and then adjusted so my original pacman could work (everything was originally commented out, and I found that out by reading further on).
    If you guys have any recommendation that may cause me to lose everything I have, I am not afraid to try it and I will not lose anything important.
    Thank you in advance.

    To make sure it's reading your conf file correctly, you could try pacman -v - which will spit out some info:
    $ pacman -v
    Root : /
    Conf File : /etc/pacman.conf
    DB Path : /var/lib/pacman/
    Cache Dirs: /var/cache/pacman/pkg/
    Lock File : /var/lib/pacman/db.lck
    Log File : /var/log/pacman.log
    Targets : None
    error: no operation specified (use -h for help)
    For even more detail, you can run pacman --debug 1
    Interesting! I did not know that and I can see that I must of done something wrong because everything is pointing too /usr/local/ instead. Very interesting. Let me edit the files in there and check that out.
    $ Root : /
    Conf File : /usr/local/etc/pacman.conf
    DB Path : /usr/local/var/lib/pacman/
    Cache Dirs: /usr/local/var/cache/pacman/pkg/
    Lock File : /usr/local/var/lib/pacman/db.lck
    Log File : /usr/local/var/log/pacman.log
    Targets : None
    error: no operation specified (use -h for help)
    That may be the culprit.
    Edit: Yeap, it is working now when I edited the configuration files in /usr/local/etc/pacman.conf. That must mean that I forgot the --sysconfdir=/etc when I did ./configure, sounds right? I'll try recompiling it making sure that option is in there along with the options you mentioned in the post, which is funny that I was refering to what you said on that other post, failed, and all of the sudden here you are helping. Pretty neat. ^_^
    Compiling now...
    Nope, it still tries to read from /usr/local/etc/pacman.conf.
    It still creates /usr/local/etc/pacman.conf, but I decided to experiment and remove it to see what would happen.
    $ pacman -v
    error: config file /usr/local/etc/pacman.conf could not be read.
    $ ln -s /etc/pacman.conf /usr/local/etc/
    necessary changes are made to /etc/pacman.conf
    $ pacman -Syu
    :: Synchronizing package databases...
    core is up to date
    extra is up to date
    community is up to date
    :: Starting full system upgrade...
    local database is up to date
    Which after I do make install following your instructions on the other thread, /etc/pacman.conf is overwritten with the new one that comments out everything and doesn't have all the necessary server/include lines at the bottom.
    What's going on here? I compile it exactly like this:
    $ ./configure --prefix=/usr --sysconfdir=/etc --localstatedir=/var
    $ make
    $ make install

  • [Solved]Upgrade pacman 4.1 - no usable package repositories configured

    Hi, i am another guy who fail with upgrade pacman 4.1
    I has pacman 4.0.3-7 and for some dependancy (like yaourt), i need pacman 4.1
    He wasn't in system update, so i download it from git : git clone git://projects.archlinux.org/pacman.git pacman
    sh ./autogen.sh
    ./configure --prefix=/usr --sysconfdir=/etc --localstatedir=/var --enable-doc
    make -j8
    sudo make install
    And now, i got this error
    sudo pacman -Syu
    error: no usable package repositories configured.
    I backup my /etc/pacman.conf and use the new one like this topic : https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php … 7#p1254497
    I check the version :
    Pacman v4.1.0 - libalpm v8.0.0
    I try to upgrade my DB
    sudo /usr/local/bin/pacman-db-upgrade
    ==> ERROR: /usr/local/var/lib/pacman/ is not a pacman database directory.
    The only solution i found right now is reinstalling arch linux o.0
    Thanks for you help.

    Why would you do that? Why would you not use pacman to upgrade/install pacman, or any other package for that matter?
    Honestly, this was such a bad idea that I'm finding it difficult to keep myself from berating you with inappropriate language (some of which I instinctively blurted out when I read your post).

    pacman-db-upgrade is a transition tool to convert pacman 3.x databases to pacman 4.x databases. Is there some guide that told you to use that to update the database?
    I pride myself on trying to be helpful on the forum, but you do not seem to have any idea of how package management works on Arch Linux. This is all covered in the wiki and on the forum. I really do not mean to be rude, but I believe that you would be better off with something else as you seem to just be naively trying random shit.
    If you really want to clean up the mess that you've made, uninstall the manually installed pacman, remove whatever AUR apps you have installed that prevent you from upgrading via pacman, then rebuild and re-install those apps after the upgrade.
    I also suspect that you are using Archbang or some other distro given that you seem to be new to the distro yet already have yaourt installed. If this is the case then you should direct yourself to their forum. This forum is for Arch Linux.

    I must have edited the pacman.conf file for some reason and not remembered.  I copied the pacman.conf file from the pacman package and everything worked fine.
    Thanks!

  • (solved) repositories configured after removal/installation of Pacman

    Hi!
    I just had a wierd problem with Pacman : when I typed
    pacman -Syu
    it said that it was unable to get core.db.tar.gz and so on for other repos.
    Then, I found a post that said the person had uninstalled pacman using
    pacman -R pacman
    Well, I tried to do by downloading the tarred package, then extracted it then :
    ./configure --prefix=/usr/bin --exec-prefix=/usr/bin && make && make install && make clean
    Now, when I type pacman -Syu, it returns :

    And where's the error? Other than the completely wrong paths being set for ./configure, there is none. That's a successful make.
    newdave wrote:P.S. I must add that currently pacman is broken on my system so " makepkg -s " does not work (error: no usable package repositories configured.)
    P.P.S note the word configure. this is user error as you've not uncommented any mirrors from /etc/pacman.d/mirrorlist. I strongly suggest you do one of two things:
    1) If you're insistent on compiling pacman by hand, use the configure flags from the package in ABS.
    2) Backup your pacman.conf/makepkg.conf, download a pacman package, and extract it to root, and then restore your config files. After fixing your mirrorlist, reinstall pacman with pacman, using pacman -Sf pacman
    I identified some error keywords in the make output and thought the make had failed. but apparently I was wrong. As you said the make was succesful( sorry for noobish mistake). As to the pacman breakage, the problem was with two duplicate copies of  pacman in /usr/bin/pacman and  /usr/local/bin/pacman ! just removed /usr/local/bin/pacman and pacman got fixed...
    Anyway, Thank you all for your help.

  • [SOLVED]How to totally remove configuration files that pacman uses?

    Hi,
    Playing with Arch linux with a view to ditching windows completely, but came across one very small issue. One where I have tried to find the answer on the wiki and using the forum search
    Anyway, I installed firefox using pacman, no problems. Then I discovered Yaught (can never spell it right) and found a proper branded firefox package on there.
    I run:
    sudo pacman -R firefox
    and it is rightly removed. The issue is it still seems to keep the installation files on the system.
    How do I completely remove all the installation files?
    Last edited by oxymoron (2009-03-16 14:06:34)

    Dont need a -y to clean your cache. Also -Scc will wipe the whole thing if you dont want them taking room.
    Some thoughts on making use of the cache...
    '-Sc' keeps the currently installed pkges and cleans only uninstalled/old pkges from cache, its a good practise to do it everytime *before* you upgrade. Doing that ensures youll always be able to downgrade to a working set of pkges if theres something wrong with an upgrade.

  • [SOLVED]GNOME-SYSTEM-TOOLS: The configuration could not be loaded

    Hello there!
    I'm a ubuntu user completely new to arch. I got my desktop up and running but there seems to be a problem setting up the gnome-system-tools program. Whenever I try to laaunch any application in this package I get this error message:
    The configuration could not be loaded
    You are not allowed to access the system configuration.
    I tried the solution on this forum thread (http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=45854 ), but to no avail. I am still getting the same error message. This is my DAEMONS line in rc.conf:
    DAEMONS=(syslog-ng hal stbd !network !dhcdbd !networkmanager wicd netfs crond alsa fam gdm)
    I have added both my user and root to the stb-admin group, this is the part of my groups file that shows this:
    stb-admin:x:103:root,abhishek
    Can anyone please help me figure out where I'm going wrong.
    Many thanks in advance.

    I was reading post installation wiki and found the following command to reinstall the whole system:
    pacman -S $(comm -3 <(pacman -Qq) <(pacman -Qqm))
    As a few things were not going right and I was unable to solve the problems using the ordinary methods, I decided to run the above command and now everything seems to be working fine .Though I'm not sure that this will remain like that, as the process was inturrpted a couple of times such that I had to hard reset the laptop.
    But everything seems to be going fine now - the system tools have started to work normally and another gnome-related problem has been solved.:D

  • [Solved] Xorg 1.8 / Trackpoint configuration issues.

    After upgrading to X.Org X Server 1.8.1.902 (1.8.2 RC 2) on a T400, I've been having a strange issue with scrolling and middle-mouse-button pasting and the new configuration system.
    After the initial upgrade, I had no keyboard or trackpoint whatsoever (though the touchpad has always mysteriously worked perfectly) -- after some configuration work, mostly from these forums -- I got most things working:
    The problem I still have, though, is that EmulateWheelTimeout seems to have no effect (I think). It's loaded (by default, I believe) -- but all the same, the mouse moves when I scroll, and more annoyingly, on middle-mouse click, everything is pasted twice.
    Edit: I though I'd add another piece of oddness that would help people figure out what is going on. When I restart X, I get no keyboard whatsoever, until I send the first mouse click. Then everything works as described.
    Edit 2: Setting Option "EmulateWheelTimeout" "1" took care of the double-pasting issue, though the behavior is strange (mouse still moves while scrolling, though less...). I'd be curious what happens with other small values (5, 10, etc.). Anyhow, I'm going to mark this as solved, though I wouldn't say it is.
    I've tried a number of different permutations of the configs below, and what's there works well except for this issue:
    Here is my xorg.conf.d/20-trackpoint.conf
    Section "InputClass"
    Identifier "Trackpoint Wheel Emulation"

    Nothing ?
    Switchng off hal deamon and cleaning ~/.kde* has no effect...
    So, after searching on google again an again, still nothing found.... even among the Ubuntu specific issue where post are terminated
    with "wait next version of the package", the windows-style answer.
    I will continue my attempts to fix this... but my conclusion about this is that hal was more precise in his behavior than udev...

  • [Solved] Black Screen after Xorg configure.

    Hello all Archlinux users;)
    Yesterday i reinstall my system (Archlinux x86_64).
    Install was succesful (it's always succesful).
    Problems started after install ,I istalled Xorg a Nvidia Drivers (GF 8600GT).
    I got conflicts nvidia-utils with xorg.utils 7-4-1 and it's remowe something gl libary.
    And ,i like always install hwd.
    I configure xorg with hwd -xa.
    I start X with (X -config /etc/X11/xorg.conf)
    And after that i started that i got black screen (Monitor have signal).
    I try nvidia drivers too ,but it's like with the Vesa (Black Screen).
    And my questions is:
    What Should i do to run Xorg?
    I run before Arch with similiar config and it's works.
    I can't get here X.org log or xorg.conf but they don't have any erorrs (in log i have something about hal and dievice , but on wiki i read that xorg 1.6 blocked hotplug dievices).
    Sorry for my English:|
    Thanks for help.
    I found similiar problem in this topic:

    Hello Again
    I started X.
    And my tip for all Arch user is to install only xorg not xserver-xorg xorg-utils just xorg to have .xinit/startx script.
    But it's not over I started X but the mause and keyboard are not responding (they are dead).
    Before when i got this I just try hwd -xa and this solved my problem.
    Now i use xorg.conf generated by hwd -xa and it's happening (mouse and keyboard are not responding).
    I got "AllowMouseOpenFail" "true"
    "AutoAddDivices" "False"
    In Server Flags but this doesn't solved my problem.
    Please help

  • [SOLVED] Weird question: pacman -Syu nothing to do for quite a while

    Hi,
    Perhaps this an odd question but I feel like for the past 2-3 weeks on two different computers "pacman -Syu" returns "x up to date" for all repos and "nothing to do" as the result. Could nothing really be upgradeable for this long? Can anyone else confirm this or has something gotten goofed? Is there a way to check actual versions with what I have to make sure things really are working properly? Even if nothing was upgradeable I can't remember the last time I saw core, extra, or community actually download without doing "pacman -Syyu". They alway say up to date and I'm thinking this just can't be correct...
    What might help for me to post? I haven't changed anything in pacman.conf or pacman.d/mirrorlist...
    Thanks,
    John

  • [solved]My first pacman is timed out !

    Hey again !
    I'm always on my first installation of Arch on my computer.
    Following the manual, i felt again on a bone, the step just after being mounted the volumes.
    When I try to "pacstrap /mnt base" i get only errors of that kind
    error: failed retrieving file 'core.db' from XXX.xxx : connetion time-out
    I'm connected through a RJ45 cable (dhcp is on), and pinging the mirrors works, no problem.
    Lurcking arount internet teached me it was probably something about the ipv6, that was to disable, thought they only talks of files that don't exist yet for me (like a .conf in grub, or files coming from a upgrade from an old pacman 3.4, though).
    I hope i don't forget any hudge data ^^

    Thanks.
    As i don't get any change, it may be something else. Could it be a isp story or a local configuration that failed ? I'll just play with theses a bit, though.
    (i put an edite note to myself here when i will be able again to access the computer :
    - edit the resolv.conf, change the nameservers to the servers the router is using OR OpenDNS or GoogleDNS OR my ISPdns.

  • [SOLVED] Wireless card works, but configuration and software doesn't

    Hi,
    I could manage to activate my Atheros wireless card using the madwifi drivers. I wanted to use knetworkmanager, but unfortunatly i doesn't recognize any of my network devices. I've read the other networkmanager threads, changed the daemons order, disabled the network daemon and the routing entry in rc.conf, but still (k)networkmanager doesn't know anything about my devices.
    I tried to use knetworkmanager-svn from the AUR. Initially it doesn't work because the SVN URLs inside the PKGBUILD script a wrong, but even after I fixed them I couldn't compile the source, because there is no configure and no Makefile in the svn head. I'm really a noob when it comes to the linux build system, so I had to give it up.
    Now I use wifi-radar. It is terribly slow to connect, but it works. However, when I disconnect with wifi-radar, then do 'ifconfig ath0 down && ifconfig eth0 up' the DNS requests fail. I checked /etc/resolv.conf and the default route (set to eth0), but they are right; the interface just doesn't use the name servers. The only way to get it working is to restart the laptop. How does Linux chose a "default interface"?
    I'm not afraid of editing text files, but I'd like change networks fast and easy. I don't want to spend hours to adapt to a new access point... I'm really looking forward to the new wlan stack; maybe things will be getting easier then.

    Okay, now KNetworkManager works (I forgot adding my user to the HAL group :] ).
    There is still a problem - I know it's networkmanager related: At home I'm not using a DHCP server. KNetworkManager cannot handle static IP configuration. However, if I issue the command 'ifconfig ath0 192.168.0.12 subnet 255.255.255.0' while KNetworkManager is searching for a DHCP server I can even ping my gateway, so there is definitely a connection. Unfortunatly KNetworkManager closes this connections after a short period (dhcp timeout). Is there a quick'n'dirty workaround for this issue?
    Another problem with KNetworkManager: When switching back to wired network, the DNS server is there :-) but the default gateway is not
    Thanks for suggestions..
    kei
    //EDIT: In Debian there is a configuration file called /etc/network/interfaces. KNetworkManager uses the static IP information I enter there. However, when I modify /etc/rc.conf accordingly in ArchLinux, KNetworkManager does NOT use it.
    //EDIT 2: After '/etc/rc.d/networkmanager restart' the static IP setting from /etc/rc.conf are used. The problem with the default gateway only occurs when the connection to one of the networks FAILS. After that failure the configuration is kind of messed up.
    Altough it seems more like a dirty hack than a definite solution, I'm quite happy with the way it works now.
    [CLOSED] <-- maybe I'm blind, but how can I change the topic to "[SOLVED] $Topic" ?

  • [SOLVED] Glibc broke pacman after 2 months without update

    Hello all !
    So I did an update of the system after two months.
    To begin with I couldn't update because of the issue with the /lib.
    Pacman was complaining that /lib was existing in the filesystem.
    I used the command provided by the wiki and by some posts to update :
    pacman -Syu --ignore glibc,curl
    Everything went fine and 422 packages were upgraded.
    But then when I tried to use pacman, I had the following error :
    pacman: /lib/libc.so.6: version 'GLIBC_2.16' not found (required by /lib/libarchive.so.12)
    I tried to follow several posts, and that's what I did :
    - downgrade pacman (extracting the tar.xz directly in the /)
    - downgrade curl (extracting the tar.xz directly in the /)
    - upgrade pacman to 2.16 (downloading it on the web and extracting it directly in the /)
    I still have the same problem with version 'GLIBC_2.16' not found.
    When I tried to upgrade pacman to 2.16, no files were put in /lib, they were put instead to /usr/lib, so I don't see how it could have solved the problem.
    Thank you for your help, I'm desperate now ! (by the way, I use yaourt)

    WorMzy wrote:Which post? You've been told never to use --force during this update: https://www.archlinux.org/news/the-lib- … a-symlink/
    The message error was different from the one about this update : https://www.archlinux.org/news/the-lib- … a-symlink/
    It was that I installed glibc by extracting the tarball, and I was trying to reinstall it cleanly using pacman. It was complaining about the files of glibc already installed.
    That's why I used the flag --force, only to overwrite glibc install.
    WorMzy wrote:It seems to me that you're only interested in a quick fix, and aren't interested in understanding what the problem is. Coupled with the fact that you haven't updated in two months, I'm going to tentatively suggest that Arch isn't the distro for you.
    Actually I am quite interested in understanding what the problem is, but even following the different posts I don't clearly get it, because I can find solutions, but not many explanations.
    As for the fact that I didn't do an update in two months, it was because I had a master thesis to write, and I couldn't afford even one day of messing around with my system. So I guess I had my reasons for doing so.
    I finally found the solution to be able to chroot back into my system, I simply had to delete /lib, and to symlink /usr/lib to /lib.
    Now everything seems to work fine.
    I am sorry if my previous posts were not clear enough, as I'm chrooting into a live usb on my desktop and using my laptop at the same time, it was hard for me to keep track of all the topics I followed.
    Thank you for your help, now I'll try and solve my booting problems !
