[SOLVED] Wireless card works, but configuration and software doesn't

Hi,
I could manage to activate my Atheros wireless card using the madwifi drivers. I wanted to use knetworkmanager, but unfortunatly i doesn't recognize any of my network devices. I've read the other networkmanager threads, changed the daemons order, disabled the network daemon and the routing entry in rc.conf, but still (k)networkmanager doesn't know anything about my devices.
I tried to use knetworkmanager-svn from the AUR. Initially it doesn't work because the SVN URLs inside the PKGBUILD script a wrong, but even after I fixed them I couldn't compile the source, because there is no configure and no Makefile in the svn head. I'm really a noob when it comes to the linux build system, so I had to give it up.
Now I use wifi-radar. It is terribly slow to connect, but it works. However, when I disconnect with wifi-radar, then do 'ifconfig ath0 down && ifconfig eth0 up' the DNS requests fail. I checked /etc/resolv.conf and the default route (set to eth0), but they are right; the interface just doesn't use the name servers. The only way to get it working is to restart the laptop. How does Linux chose a "default interface"?
I'm not afraid of editing text files, but I'd like change networks fast and easy. I don't want to spend hours to adapt to a new access point... I'm really looking forward to the new wlan stack; maybe things will be getting easier then.

Okay, now KNetworkManager works (I forgot adding my user to the HAL group :] ).
There is still a problem - I know it's networkmanager related: At home I'm not using a DHCP server. KNetworkManager cannot handle static IP configuration. However, if I issue the command 'ifconfig ath0 192.168.0.12 subnet 255.255.255.0' while KNetworkManager is searching for a DHCP server I can even ping my gateway, so there is definitely a connection. Unfortunatly KNetworkManager closes this connections after a short period (dhcp timeout). Is there a quick'n'dirty workaround for this issue?
Another problem with KNetworkManager: When switching back to wired network, the DNS server is there :-) but the default gateway is not
Thanks for suggestions..
kei
//EDIT: In Debian there is a configuration file called /etc/network/interfaces. KNetworkManager uses the static IP information I enter there. However, when I modify /etc/rc.conf accordingly in ArchLinux, KNetworkManager does NOT use it.
//EDIT 2: After '/etc/rc.d/networkmanager restart' the static IP setting from /etc/rc.conf are used. The problem with the default gateway only occurs when the connection to one of the networks FAILS. After that failure the configuration is kind of messed up.
Altough it seems more like a dirty hack than a definite solution, I'm quite happy with the way it works now.
[CLOSED] <-- maybe I'm blind, but how can I change the topic to "[SOLVED] $Topic" ?

  • 3G works but calls and messeges doesn't

    Hi. I bought my iPhone 5 from my friend. The 3G data works but I can't call or send messeges, not even receive those. The network of my provider is shown, yet I dont have any connection bars.

    Then contact your cell phone provider to resolve the issue, both of those are carrier features.

  • A20p, got a mini-pci wireless card working on it

    I had thought this impossible. Everywhere i'd looked i couldn't find one person who'd got this working.
    Today i've just done it. I had an SMC wireless router which had failed, it kept powering itself off all of the time so i'd bought a new router. Before i chucked the old router out i took it apart to have a look to see if i could find what had failed. To my surprise it had a mini-pci wireless card mounted in a slot on the mainboard (to give it wireless functionality i guess). I got the wireless card out and left the antenna leads still connected to the antennas on the back panel of the router.
    Then i removed the mini-ethernet/56K modem card (IBM FRU-08K3125) from the A20p mini-pci slot and put the mini-pci wireless card in it's place. For the time being i left the antenna wires hanging out of the bottom with the router back panel and antenna still attached.
    I hadn't got a clue who the manufacturer of the wireless card was but what i did have was the chipset number "TNETW1130GVF" which i obviously got off the chip on the mini-pci card. After a quick search i found some drivers that should be compatible with the chipset:-
    http://www.safecom.cn/code/support/DMF.aspx?pid=316#
    I've also tried these (actually the same thing):-
    http://www.wireless-driver.com/download/other/2007-6-26/TI-TNETW1130GVF-Chipset-Driver.htm
    I loaded them up and it worked!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Both driver downloads work!!!!
    Now i've just got to find some internal antenna and wire them into the case!
    Edit: i forgot to mention that the card is being recognised as a Texas instruments 802.11g MiniPCI card in Windows Device Manager (which is no surprise as it's a Texas Instruments Chipset). Also i'm on WinXP Pro SP3.

    Who would have known? I wouldn't have expected a router to use a mini-PCI card.

  • What wireless card works well with Arch?

    Hello there
    I recently finished building my quad-core (yay!) pc and because I don't want to run a long ethernet cable across the house, I was wondering if you guys knew any wireless cards I could use for my desktop (PCI/PCI-Express) that would work well with arch. I'd prefer to order it over the internet, and don't want to spend more than $100 (tax/shipping included). I know there was an earlier thread about this, but I didn't want to revive it and I also had some "requirements" in which I pick out. All help is appreciated

  • Getting  a wireless card working on a G5 PowerMac.

    Hello there.
    I am trying to help a friend get a wireless card working on his PowerMac. So far the machine knows about the card is there but it isn't working as an Airport.
    Two cards have been tested, an Apple branded one and now a generic PC one which looks to be using the same chip-set coincidentally. The PC one had some Mac drivers which my friend said he installed, but somehow he ended up with FUSE on his system. :-? I don't know why that happened as a file-system handler isn't going to help get wireless working that I know of! LOL. :-D
    The driver CD is missing now so I can't check it. And the box has nothing about the card. So I wouldn't even know where to get a compatible driver. I have searched using the PCI info but no luck.
    The Apple card has Apple A1027 stamped on it. And the antenna has been connected on it AFAICT. I've also read Atirport cards can't simply be plugged into the PowerMac and an Apple technician must install it. Could this be the case? And what about the generic PC wireless card then?
    The end result is that the machine knows the hardware is there but it can't get any wireless communication working. Also, a Apple Base Station has now replaced a wireless router. So can that be made to run a diagnostic and see if it find the Airport itself? Or even the same on the Mac?
    Here is the Mac model:
    Machine Name: Power Mac G5
    Machine Model: PowerMac11,2

    You might find some useful advice here:

    System Profiler (Apple menu -> About This Mac -> More Info) should show if the AirPort card is recognized. I'd then try to add an AirPort connection item in the Network panel of System Preferences, enable the AirPort menu bar item, then try to turn AirPort on.

  • Does this wireless card work with leopard

    I was just wondering if anyone has this wireless card working on os x leopard?:
    http://www.macwireless.com/html/products/wirelesscards/11g_11bcards/11gPCI.php
    It says it is tiger compatible - but then also says tiger or "higher". I wrote the company selling it but just wondered if anyone is already using it out there .
    Thanks,

    Hi there!
    You need to be sure that this card supports the broadcomm chipset, as this will allow the card to be recognized as an airport extreme device, otherwise you might have to hunt for a compatible driver for the mac.
    You are better off with the G+ card from Belkin. The model of my card is a Belkin F5D7001 with the broadcomm chipset. You might have to do an in depth search to make sure that you find the right one.

    could it be the CLASSPATH

    Definitely sounds like the classpath problem. From the sounds of the error message, you are using win95/98/ME, and so the best way to get around this is to set the classpath in your autoexec.bat file. I think the problem is because you have to set 2 variables in your path, one for the running of the java (JRE) and one for the tools to process the uncompiled files (SDK);
    rightclick on your autoexec.bat and select Edit
    here is my path, change yours accordingly so the paths lead to your windows, command and bin directories accordingly.
    PATH=D:\WINDOWS;D:\WINDOWS\COMMAND;D:\PROGRAM FILES\JAVASOFT\J2SDK1.4\BIN
    SET CLASSPATH=.;D:\PROGRAM FILES\JAVASOFT\J2SDK1.4\BIN\TOOLS.JAR
    Theres a section on setting classpath in This site at :
    java.sun.com/j2se/1.3/docs/tooldocs/win32/classpath.html
    and if that doesn't work, then i recommend you download and IDE which sorts ou most of these problems for you, and makes programming much easier also :)
    anything from:
    Suns Forte
    Jcreator
    Jbuilder

    Why can't I get my printer to print out a playlist from i-tunes? It used to work, but now the printer doesn't seem to recognize the "print" command coming from i-tunes. The printer works for other applications!

    I  finally solved this problem after toiling with it for a couple of  days.  Solution:  Once you have  burned your CD you must go back into  iTunes to your music/playlists and select the playlist you just burned  and click file; print and you will  get the mosaics that we have been  accustomed to.  I was on hold with  Apple Support when I found this  myself.  Yes......!!! • Internet sharing works but the DNS part doesn't

    I'm posting this message because I believe it is a bit different from other 'Lion internet sharing' posts in terms of the source of sharing and also the results I get.
    Similar to other users experiencing the same problem, my internet sharing setup stopped working as expected after upgrading to Lion. However, I can't say it stopped working completely. It still does work but the DNS part doesn't. This means I can still perform pings, ssh and socket connections from computers using the shared connection. But I cannot browse the internet because web site names can't be resolved.
    For example, my MacPro has two Ethernet interfaces. On one of them (en0) I vpn when connecting to work using a VPN service I created via System Preferences => Network. I used to share that VPN connection to computers using the 2nd one (en1). The other computers are linked to (en1) through a multiport hub. This setup used to work flawlessly in Snow Leopard and multiple users could use the shared vpn internet connection.
    After the upgrade to Lion I can still see other computers on the local network and also ping any external internet site. I can even use Safari and navigate my ISP's home page using its IP address only. However, DNS doesn't work and internet domains cannot be resolved by name so internet browsing is not possible.
    Furthermore, when I don't VPN to work but simply share the connection to the internet from (en0) to computers using (en1) everything works as it used to in Snow Leopard. The difference here is that the same DNS servers are used by both network services.
    So far I'm stuck with these findings and I don't know where else to look for answers. Any input or feedback is greatly appreciated.

    I've to admit that i don't even know what VPN means.. but..
    I have an 27" iMac (mid 2010), a iPhone 4 and a Macbook Pro 13" (mid 2009) .. and i used to share my ethernet connection to wi-fi on Snow Leopard. Since i upgraded to Lion (i'm using it since the first DP, and i think the internet sharing was working under the 1st DP .. i'm not pretty sure), it just doesn't work.
    Just like solongpc, it does activate the internet sharing, my other devices can see and connect but neither of then (my iMac - host or my mbp and iphone) can navigate on the internet. And when i turn off my internet sharing (on my iMac), it still not acessing any website.. and i've to restart my moden.

  • How does does Wireless and a Wireless card work?

    I bought an imac G5 1.8ghz We already have a BT wireless connection and I want to hook up to that. I gather that I need an airport card but I'm not sure how to insert a card into the machine there is a CD portal and ones for USB as well. How does this wireless business work and what do I need for my machine running Tiger 10.4.11?

    The AirPort Extreme card appears to be the correct product
    but you should be able to tell from some of the Apple Support
    information in the form of their product support page for your
    specific computer model. The main support section has a side
    bar menu of products and if you find iMac G5, then look into it
    further, you can identify what exact model iMac G5 you have.
    {+If you have looked under the Blue Apple in the Finder menu bar+
    +and chosen About this Mac> more info> System Profiler> then,+
    +look under Network> Airport card, you can see if one is installed+.}
    There are manuals, instructions and other info available, too.
    The manual to install the physical AirPort Extreme card is in
    the manuals link in the iMac G5 page in Apple Support.
    Since there were a few different models of iMac G5, you should
    be sure to get the install instructions that match your computer.
    The card itself could be used in many different Mac models, so
    it will NOT have installation instructions with it for your iMac G5.
    {The hardware installation is the point of reference here; not the
    CD software, which very likely is outdated and not needed at all.}
    Apple - Support - iMac G5 models:
    http://www.apple.com/support/imac/g5/
    Apple - Support - Manuals:
    iMac models (from newer Intel, on back to older)
    http://support.apple.com/manuals/#imac
    Since the iMac G5 (PPC) and iMac (Intel) look similar, you
    will have to identify your computer in the G5 category to
    be able to get the correct AirPort installation instruction .pdf.
    How to Identify your iMac (note three designs)
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1463
    The software CD included with that older Airport Extreme package
    will likely be older than your OS X version in the computer now.
    {So, you will NOT need to install that software to use the AirPort card.}
    Examples of .pdf download manuals on how to install an Airport card
    are as follows (these are actual links to these manuals.) +So, these may+
    +not be for your specific iMac G5 computer.+ To be sure, use Identify page.
    • _iMac G5 20-inch_ AirPort Extreme Card Replacement Instructions (Do It Yourself Manual)
    iMac G5 AirPort Extreme Card, 20-inch 4. Pull the tab on the card to remove the card from
    the AirPort card guide. Important:

    • _iMac G5 17-inch_ AirPort Extreme Card Replacement Instructions (Do It Yourself Manual)
    iMac G5 AirPort Extreme Card, 17-inch 4. Pull the tab on the card to remove the card from
    the AirPort card guide. Important:
    http://manuals.info.apple.com/enUS/imacG5_17inchAirPort.pdf
    {Since the above are examples, and there were more than two designs, you should
    check the ' how to identify your iMac ' page under the iMac G5 and Intel, to be sure.}
    Good luck & happy computing!
    PS: if your 1.8GHz iMac G5 is a 17" LCD with Ambient Light Sensor, the wireless
    AirPort Extreme is a built-in component: Model # M9843 (1.8 GHz) and in the older
    1.8GHz iMac G5 20" the card is listed as an Optional part, in pre-light sensor model.

  • [SOLVED] wireless card finds networks, but unable to connect

    Hi,
    I have a notebook with the wireless card "Intel Centrino Wireless-N 1000". According to this site, the drivers are part of the iwlwifi project, so it should be included in the kernel.
    I installed wpa_supplicant and wireless_tools, and the interface wlan0 showed up:
    # ip link
    1: lo: <LOOPBACK,UP,LOWER_UP> mtu 16436 qdisc noqueue state UNKNOWN mode DEFAULT
    link/loopback 00:00:00:00:00:00 brd 00:00:00:00:00:00
    2: eth0: <NO-CARRIER,BROADCAST,MULTICAST,UP> mtu 1500 qdisc pfifo_fast state DOWN mode DEFAULT qlen 1000
    link/ether 04:xx:xx:xx:xx:xx brd ff:ff:ff:ff:ff:ff
    3: wlan0: <BROADCAST,MULTICAST> mtu 1500 qdisc mq state DOWN mode DEFAULT qlen 1000
    link/ether 74:xx:xx:xx:xx:xx brd ff:ff:ff:ff:ff:ff
    So, I configured my wifi-network without any encryption. I installed netcfg and copied /etc/network.d/examples/wireless-open to /etc/network.d/, changed the essid and enabled debugging:
    DESCRIPTION='A simple opened wireless connection'
    INTERFACE='wlan0'
    SECURITY='none'
    ESSID='wrt'
    IP='dhcp'
    # Uncomment this if your ssid is hidden
    #HIDDEN=yes
    WPA_OPTS="-f/home/sigma/log"
    then I did
    # netcfg wireless-open
    :: wireless-open up
    > WPA Authentication/Association failed
    The debug file of netcfg says:
    Trying to authenticate with f4:xx:xx:xx:xx:xx (SSID='wrt' freq=2462 MHz)
    Trying to authenticate withf4:xx:xx:xx:xx:xx (SSID='wrt' freq=2462 MHz)
    Trying to authenticate with f4:xx:xx:xx:xx:xx (SSID='wrt' freq=2462 MHz)
    So I tried another wifi usb card, which works fine. I used the same netcfg profile as before and just changed INTERFACE='wlan0' to INTERFACE='wlan1'.
    The debug file says:
    Trying to authenticate with f4:xx:xx:xx:xx:xx (SSID='wrt' freq=2462 MHz)
    Trying to associate with f4:xx:xx:xx:xx:xx (SSID='wrt' freq=2462 MHz)
    Associated with f4:xx:xx:xx:xx:xx
    CTRL-EVENT-CONNECTED - Connection to f4:xx:xx:xx:xx:xx completed (auth) [id=0 id_str=]
    So, the settings seem to be fine, it's probably some problem with the driver or a missing module. Any kind of advice is appreciated.
    Thanks in advance.

    The driver indeed has been troublesome lately for that card one reads. Have a try, if the following gets it working:
    rmmod iwlwifi
    modprobe iwlwifi 11n_disable=1 swcrypto=1
    Then try to connect with your profile.

  • WRT160N wireless is working, but not wired

    Hello,
     I installed firmware 2.0.02 and configured my WRT160N using the instructions from this post:
    Post WRT160N
      My wireless connection is working great from my laptop.  I am very happy with the range and speed.
     However, I have a desktop that is connected to one of the Ethernet ports on the back of the router, and I’m having problems with this.
     When I first start using the desktop after boot-up, or after sitting for a long time, I open IE and I get a “Page Can Not be Displayed” error.  Sometimes if I press Refresh a few times it starts working.  Other times, it doesn’t start working until I login to the Linksys.  All I do is login to the Linksys, I don’t change anything or do anything except login, then the Internet works fine from my desktop.
    Another thing I’ve tried is release and renew my IP on the desktop.  That also seems to solve the problem.
     Another strange thing I noticed, when connecting wirelessly from my laptop, i.e. come out of suspend mode, the network connection switches from Connected to Disconnected, then back to Connected again.  If I launch IE before this is done, I get a “Page Can Not be Displayed” error, but as long as I wait for it to say “Connected” the second time, it works great.
     I have Comcast cable Internet service.  Before the 160N, I was using a Linksys 4 port router (BEFSR41?).  I never had any problems with that router wired to my desktop or laptop.  I've had that router for many years and never had any problems (very solid).
     Any ideas?
     Thanks,
    Scott
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    Hi,
    I liked the WRT160N, but it turns out that version 2 of this router is defective.
    See this post:  WRT160N Post
    I returned the WRT160N and exchanged it for a WRT310N.  I've been testing the 310N with wired and wireless connections (desktop and laptop), and it's been great!  Not one problem.
    Most of the Linksys home use routers use the Broadcom processor (including WRT160Nv1), but the WRT160Nv2 uses a Ralink processor, and it is the only one that uses Ralink.
    Source of information
    I saw one post that said they thought the 160N does not have enough memory.  The 160N has 16MB of memory.
    I chose the WRT310N because it has 32MB of memory and it uses a Broadcom processor.
    My theory is that 310N will be more reliable because it uses a processor that Linksys is very familiar with and is tried and tested, and also because it has more memory.
    The downside is that the 310N is $35 more expensive than the 160N.
    I've also read that the 310N has heat issues, so I propped it up on an angle so it can get better air circulation.
    Cheers!
