okay, yeah I was thinking it seemed like a server problem since it proceeded to update some packages from community the first time I got that error.

  • [SOLVED] pacman.conf simple line error or... ?

    So here's what happened:
I was trying to enable the [multilib] repository. (As according to https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Multilib).
Thus, I went ahead and uncommented the following from /etc/pacman.conf:
    [multilib]
    SigLevel = PackageRequired
    Include = /etc/pacman.d/mirrorlist
To edit /etc/pacman.conf, I used LibreOffice Writer. I saved the file as a .txt document and made sure that it is properly renamed as pacman.conf.
Next, I went to update pacman's package list by running pacman with the -Sy switch.
    And then, voila:
    # pacman -Sy
error: config file /etc/pacman.conf, line 1: All directives must belong to a section.
However, when looking at pacman.conf I don't see any errors in line 1. Nor do I see any problems with directives.
Here are the contents of pacman.conf:
    http://pastebin.com/raw.php?i=XWh9eagr
Is there a simple problem with a line in pacman.conf --- or is it because I used LibreOffice Writer instead of Vi? Or?
Is the answer to this right in front of my nose?
    Thank ya'll..

LibreOffice Writer is a word processor - it will do odd things to your .conf files. Use a text editor. If you don't want to use vi, then use nano, or gedit or anything other than a word processor.

I want to update my system, but the first weird thing I notice after pacman -Syu is this warning message:

Profjim gave you the link above.  It is a plain tarball that contains all the necessary files and symlinks.

oskarn did -Syu (and most likely -Syud as Allan said), which is not -Sy.  Since you aren't familiar with the basics of arch/pacman, it's hard to guess what you really did exactly.  If you're able to get this all fixed, you'll need to read through some wiki articles to get a basic grasp of things.

Run 'pacman -Syu' and try again. Theres a new version available: 5.0.1-1- updated four days ago http://www.archlinux.org/packages/?q=mkvtoolnix
Always make sure your system is up to date before installing new packages.

  • [solved] pacman broken after "pacman -Syyu" excluding pacman

    Hi forums,
I use arch x86_64, yaourt and the testing and multilib repositories.
A full system upgrade doing "yaourt -Syyu" didn't work, because pacman had an unfulfilled dependancy which I don't recall, but it was about a normal and a multilib version: I probably have the multilib version of a library installed, which has not been updated to the version required by pacman yet.
So I thought it would be perfectly fine to exclude pacman from this system upgrade by choosing "manually" from the options given by "yaourt -Syyu" and commented pacman.
The upgrade then went fine except for the two final lines:
package-query: error while loading shared libraries: libarchive.so.2: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory
testdb: error while loading shared libraries: libarchive.so.2: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory
Now everytime I try to use pacman, I get this error:
pacman: error while loading shared libraries: libarchive.so.2: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory
Do you know how to solve this?
    Thanks in advance

ngoonee wrote:Actually (even without cower), makepkg will tell you what dependencies are missing when you try and compile an AUR package. In fact, -s will install them for you (unless they're from the AUR, in which case you have to download/makepkg that package first).
Actually, I was more concerned about updates for packages from AUR. yaourt would handle AUR packages as if they were in a repository, and update them, solving dependency problems.
Now what I fear is, that if some regular library gets an update, it may not updated on my system in the first place, because pacman only sees that the older version is needed for the AUR software, but is not capable of updating the AUR package (which works with the new library version) automatically. So updates will break some software unless I remove it first and install the latest version manually.

  • [SOLVED] pacman mirror problems

It seems that my preferred mirror (mirror.csclub.uwaterloo.ca) is down, so I commented it out of /etc/pacman.d/mirrorlist. However, pacman still insists on trying to download from this mirror EVERY TIME it tries to install or update a package
So each package takes about 15 seconds to say:
error: failed retrieving file 'gcc-4.5.0-1-x86_64.pkg.tar.xz' from mirror.csclub.uwaterloo.ca: Connection timed out
    before trying another mirror.
Is there an option to make sure pacman is using the mirrors specified in the mirrorlist, or to not use a certain mirror? I can't find anything in the man page or wiki.
    thanks.

I know this thread is marked solved but I've just run into the same problem and was wondering how you fixed this issue?
When I run pacman -Syu I get:
error: failed retrieving file 'core.db.tar.gz' from mirror.csclub.uwaterloo.ca : Connection timed out
So I guess this is the same problem. It's weird though because I'm still able to search for packages without the connection timing out. I did check the mirrors status and it still seems to be up so I don't think that's an issue.
Any help would be appreciated, sorry in advance if I've done something wrong by posting in a thread marked solved.
Shot in the dark but I had a similar problem. The way I fixed it (and I'm still not sure why it worked) but I manually entered my DNS servers into my network manager applet. I don't know if you use Gnome, KDE, or whatever (I use KDE), but that worked for some reason. Maybe you could try it.
Thanks for the response, yes I'm using Gnome and networkmanager applet 0.8. I'm not too sure what you mean by entering the DNS server in the network manager applet. Are you suggesting that I enter my ip address (the one assigned to me by my ISP) into the BSSID or MAC address field? Those are the only two fields that I see when I select my connection and click edit in the network manager applet, unless I go to the security settings or one of the IPv tabs.
I was able to update my system after uncommenting the kernel.org mirror, so maybe it is the mirror.csclub.uwaterloo.ca. Too bad mirrors don't have a blog or something to post news/status updates on it could prove helpful when problems like this occur. Then again that would mean more maintenance for them and I can understand why it might be considered too much work. I guess https://www.archlinux.de/?page=MirrorStatus works good enough.

  • [SOLVED]pacman problem

error: could not open file /var/lib/pacman/sync/archlinuxfr.db: Failed to open '/var/lib/pacman/sync/archlinuxfr.db'
this occurred after i removed: package-query, pacman-color, perl-xyne-arch, powerpill and yaourt.
i removed those because when i tried to upgrade pacman itself i was getting the following error
    resolving dependencies...

    :: package-query: requires pacman<3.5

I am guessing package-query is something i should not have removed?
anyone know how to solve this?

yup always keep an eye on what the upgrade manager tells you. As mrunion noted, you have to run pacman-db-upgrade because pacman 3.5 uses a different db format than pacman 3.4.x

  • [SOLVED :)]How do I record error messages to post to the forum?

    My setup:
Win 7 running Arch on VBox
Arch networking is set up and working
Nothing installed except for vim, links, + many packages included at install
    Issue:
Having trouble installing xorg-server (etc, stuff needed for GUI)
So I have all these error messages, and I would like to post them to the forum and they're too long to type.  Supposing I didn't just want to summarize or tell you the gist of the message, how would I copy the whole thing and post it to these forums.  I'm sure there are many ways, so let's hear some!
I can already redirect to file with:
    pacman -S <package list> > errors.txt 2>&1
How would I grab that data from my VBox install and send it either from Arch or from Win7?
*Edit*: I /am/ able to install some things with pacman -S <package>  (like vim).

I have.  I've tried other distros and each one of them had problems.  So to solve my problems, I'm going to need to understand linux more.  For that reason, I chose Arch.  And it was recommended by an IRC friend who is doing similar code writing as me, and if we work on this project together we can help each other out with our computer issues.  E.g. If I'm on win 7 and he's on Arch, I have some weird issue with Visual D, and all he can say is good luck!  Once I've got my setup working, we can help each other since we'll both be running into the same bugs.   Another reason is speed, basic linux with minimal crap pre-installed seems to run way faster in VBox.  I'm in AZ, where the temperature really does affect CPU temp.
In learning linux, there is a healthy trade off between learning every detail about one thing and just skimming over and going back to it later.  I am now doing more of the latter so that I can have just the basics up and running, X-windows, sound, networking, and so on...  So when I see a sed command, I think 'yeah it would be worth it to learn how to use sed,'  but if I did nothing but learning sed for the next week, I would not meet certain idealistic goals I have for myself.  And if I take too long, on one thing, how do I know that what I am doing is the smart way to do it?  I need the bigger picture for that.  So I need to carefully manage what little time I have on Earth, and use all I know, all my intuition to make the right decision at each step, and sometimes that decision is either: try something else, get help from someone else, understand something more, sleep on it.  I lost my point somewhere in there.  But yeah, I am an able to learn, in my own way, what I want, and when I want to.  When the time comes for me to teach, I will understand my pupils, and encourage them, knowing each one is relatively unique in their goals and plans for Arch or w/e I'm teaching them.

  • [SOLVED]Pacman systemd missing file

Everytime when I run pacman I get this error:
error: could not open file /var/lib/pacman/local/systemd-217-8/desc: No such file or directory
I think i messed up something when upgrading system.
Can you help me to solve this issue?
    Thanks

    Just reinstall systemd:
    pacman -S systemd
select yes if it prompts due to it already being installed.
You might also want to run `pacman -Qk` to see if any other packages have been damaged.
EDIT: I just did some silly trial and error and deleted that file from my system (probably would have been smarter to move/rename it).  Reinstalling systemd failed due to a conflicting file error as all the files for the package are there, but the pacman database doesn't realize they belong to that package.  In this case I used --force with the single specific package:
    pacman -S --force systemd
Note that this use of --force is an apparent necessity to fix this specific problem.  This does not support using it when uncertain why something fails - I knew why it was failing.

  • Extract error while distributing Desktop Application

    Hello,
we have a problem with extracting a Desktop Application on a special
location. The same TED Dist is working on a few other locations (different
channels). Also other Distribution work on the specific location. we've
already deleted all temporary files on the ZFS volume on the subscriber and
distributer, rebuilded the distribution. We've also deleted the specific
channel and recreated it, but this didn't solve the problem anyway.
    the error is as following:
Info 2006/04/12 08:42:02 AM Creating new application failed, Subscriber
Tree Name= OrgTree, Subscriber DN = Subscriber_WOHNW01.ZFS.WIN01.PD, error

we are running ZENworks 6.5 SP2 Server Management on all servers, but the
problem was already there without sp2.
thanks in advance for any help

Are you sure the working context is set?
Does the working context show up if you look at the ZSM config through
    remote webconsole?

  • [SOLVED] Pacman wont upgrade any packages

EDIT: I was able to solve my problem by pacman -R yaourt package-query pacman-color, I was then able to update pacman. Since I like yaourt and wanted to keep it I follow the instructions on their page (http://archlinux.fr/yaourt-en#get_it). I added their repo to my /etc/pacman.conf and then installed yaourt from pacman and now everything works again like it should.
When I try to upgrade packages I get the following errors:
    [jason@barnaby ~]$ sudo pacman -Su

I tried to uninstall packagekit and failed, then I tried to install packagekit-git and that failed too.
    [jason@barnaby ~]$ sudo pacman -R packagekit

    [jason@barnaby ~]$ yaourt -S packagekit-git

I assume this should be git-repository=0.6.6 Also I can find this package on Pacman or AUR

This is obsolete dependency connected with gobject-introspection support. I think it can be removed without any problems. :)
