[solved] Pango modules : text is rendered with squares

Hello
I couldn't find the solution in the forum, so I though I'd post the solution. If your GTK apps display text with squares only, you may have a problem with pango modules. You can debug that by launching the app in a terminal, but it's not that easy if all your apps including the terminal are in GTK...
The solution is to run this command :
pango-querymodules > '/etc/pango/pango.modules'
Normally, this is done when upgrading pango, but sometimes it gets wrong with no reason.
Cilyan

Hello Cilyan,
I got this issue(http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=75541), and just today find your topic.
Thank's a lot for a solution and my respects
But, i think that better to place this topic in Desktop Environments  forums, because first of all users will think that this problem with x11 and find there first..

  • [SOLVED] No module for virtualbox-ose with 2.6.27

    Hi there,
I just upgraded and noticed, that virtualbox isn't starting. Probing vboxdrv manually doesn't work because there is no module for the current kernel. The packages virtualbox-modules was upgraded with the system-upgrade. I'm using virtualbox-modules-2.0.2-3.pkg.tar.gz.
So I'm compiling the modules manually with ABS right now, will report the results.
Edit: After compiling and installing, there is still no working module

You only need to recompile virtualbox-modules. I did that yesterday and worked flawlessly.
The thing you have to notice, is that you must update the kernel version defined in the PKGBUILD and virtualbox-modules.install:
    cp -r /var/abs/community/modules/virtualbox-modules .
    cd virtualbox-modules
    sed -i 's|2.6.26-ARCH|2.6.27-ARCH|' PKGBUILD virtualbox-modules.install
    makepkg

  • [SOLVED] Some text not rendering in Gnome after update

After a recent update some text is not rendering in Gnome. For example, look at the url bar of chromium in this screenshot: http://i.imgur.com/A2Qyw.png
Here's a "screenshot" of some text not rendering in gnome-terminal:
    $ echo -e "I like pizza\nI like pizza\nI like pizza"
    ...blank line...
    ...blank line...
    ...blank line...
    ...blank line...
It basically renders my desktop environment worthless. I don't see anything suspicious in /var/lob/Xorg.0.log. Here are some of the packages I've updated recently:

I'm not running [testing]. I don't know which of the two recent upgrades introduced the regression, but I'm guessing it was the one with all the xorg stuff...
Any ideas what's going on here? Thanks!

  • Fonts only rendering as squares (KDE at least) [solved]

I'm installing my second Arch box (hurray!) and I'm having a problem with fonts. When I start up KDE (including KDM), all the fonts are rendered as squares. I think I have the locale setup properly including rc.conf, and both the 75 dpi and 100 dpi xorg fonts installed. Xorg.0.log didn't seem to give any clues. Obviously I'm missing something silly. Does anyone know what it is?

I had to make some modifications to the script:
    Changed '/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts' to '/usr/share/fonts'
It seems to have done the trick. Thanks

  • [Solved] radeonsi: only Software Rendering with AMD A10-7850k APU

    Hi,
I have a new computer with an AMD A10-7850k APU.
I installed Arch Linux as usual and now get only Software Rendering with the open source drivers.
    $ glxinfo | grep vendor
    server glx vendor string: SGI
client glx vendor string: Mesa Project and SGI

    Xorg.0.log

    dmesg | grep drm

I am in the video group and I have no nomodeset in my boot entry.
Is this APU not yet supported for Hardware Rendering with the radeonsi drivers or do I miss anything?
Thanks in advance for any help!

  • How to load different modules in moduleLoader - some with other without unload?

Ok so I've read a lot about modules and I decided to build a site where I have a button bar menu and a single moduleLoader, where all of my pages are separate modules. Some of the modules will be preloaded with moduleManager technique so they will be in memory and should pop up instantly and others should be unloaded since they will be used rarely. Imagine you have 50 pages, 45 of them use the same 3 modules and the rest 5 use 5 other modules.
    So I need 2 things:
    1) those 3 modules preloaded (loaded into memory) and then used - this is not a problem. In the change handler of the button bar I just set the url of the moduleLoader=""; and right after that line I put moduleLoader.url = "module1.swf" for example. This way the ready event fires everytime I change the selected button of the buttonBar and since the module is loaded into memory it changes immediately, which is great.
    2) I need the rest 5 modules that are not preloaded, to be loaded by the moduleLoader and when the user clicks on another button, the module to be unloaded and the new module for the new selected button to be loaded on it's place. So here unloading of the old module and loading of the new one should happen with 1 user interaction - clicking a button. How do I do that?
I am asking this because I found out that there is some difference when the module has been preloaded or not which changes the way it unloads. Also in certain cases if a module has been unloaded once and loaded again it stops shooting the unload event by only changing the moduleLoader.url and then you have to specifically call moduleLoader.unloadModule() function to get it called.
    And all of this brought me to the idea that maybe the only way to make this work for case 2 is having moduleLoader.unloadModule(); and on the next line after it moduleLoader.url = "newModuleUrlHere";
But then I bumped into a problem with flickering in my buttonBar selected button transition which I describe and give online example of here:
    http://forums.adobe.com/thread/760347?tstart=0
So is there any technique of combining preloaded modules which should not be unloaded + the ones who need to be loaded and unloaded and all of this to be working with just one moduleLoader instance?
I really didn't expect to have so much trouble with modules... If no one can suggest me a working example I will post each case I described here to help me get resolution to this cause I can't get on with my project and it's very important.
    Thanks in advance!

Hi thanks for the reply here too
I agree it totally makes sense if I do not unload modules to load them in the same application domain and not as a child. This way I wouldn't have to worry about the singletons I could have forgotten to initialize in the main application If my logic is correct. But still is it wrong to leave them in a child ApplicationDomain since I will still have modules I will need to unload and I would still have to be careful about the singleton managers?
Note: have in mind I am trying to separate the module's from the main application, so the application won't use any classes defined in the modules since it won't be aware of what's in what module.
Yes, I do have a buttonBar buttons which map to module urls.
Ok I will try to setup my questions in a few very simple example applications, it would be easier for you to understand what's confusing me.
    http://filip.nedyalkov.net/moduleLoaderTesting2/ - view source enabled - look at testing3.mxml
In the button bar change handler I have:
    moduleURL = buttonBar.
    selectedItem.url;moduleLoader.url = moduleURL;
and I listen to the moduleLoader unload event.
    On the Unload Current Module Button I have: moduleLoader.unloadModule();
Ok what is confusing me is this: When I start switching between module1 and module2 do they automatically get unloaded because I recall reading that changing the moduleLoader.url property doesn't unload the module just releases it? Also I'm getting the unload event shoot very strange because if I am on module1 and then click on module2 it doesn't shoot that module1 was unloaded, it doesn't do anything. As soon as I click back on module1 then it shoot unloaded (you can see that in my example in the text area).
Another strange thing is that while doing this, everytime you click on module1 or module2 they get transferred over the network I can see that in mozilla firebug. Now if I am on module1 and click the Unload Current Module button the module really gets unloaded and then the unload event is correct and shoot when it's supposed to shoot. Now if you click on module2 and then come back to module1 it will get loaded again, but now it will be put in memory, it won't shoot unload event any more and it won't get transferred over the network when I switch the modules? Why is that ? All I did was unloading the module once and it changes everything.
So I hope you undertstand this cause I have no idea is this supposed to work this way? Would you be so kind to explain me this behaviour ?
    Thanks!

  • Some text not rendered

    Hi.
I seem to have some sort of font problem. Some text on certain website doesn't seem to render proberly. This behaviour is only present with webkit browsers (dwb, luakit, surf, midori, jumanji) and not with firefox or chromium. I can't be sure when this bug was introduced, but I'm pretty certain it was a while ago. A recent update is probably not the problem here.
The text is not rendered when you first visit a site where the bug occurs, but whill render if you mark the whitespace where the text should be with you mouse. I'll post two images to show you what I mean.
    How it looks:
    http://i.imgur.com/4Gp9j.png
    After marking the text:
    http://i.imgur.com/5BRw9.png
I'm having the fonts ttf-dejavu and ttf-liberation installed and their paths added to xorg.conf. Nothing else has been done to the font configuration.
    Simon

I'll probably file a bug report later tonight (although we're in different time zones so that probably doesn't make much sense to you). I'll just compile the latest nightly first, just to make sure that it wasn't just fixed a couple of days ago.
EDIT: Here's the bug report: https://bugs.webkit.org/show_bug.cgi?id=105132.

  • Modifying text before rendering

In my application there are different use cases where it would be good if I could modify the text before rendering without actually altering the textflow. For example if you want to implement faux small caps by using a style name (example: <p styleName="fauxSmallCaps">Heading</p>). So it would be nice if you got the paragraph as a text flow to export a clean version of it, but if you render it it would be something like <p>H<span fontSize="12">EADING</span></p> so that it would be rendered correctly.
It would be also a nice way to create automatically numbered lists or headings, but then it would be necessary to create a type of text that isn't selectable and changeable.
Is there a way to implement something like this without using hacks like a hidden TextFlow that contains the clean code and/or layering another TextFlow on top of the current one?

You could try implementing a IFormatResolver on TextFlow and using that to generate attributes on your styled text.  That exporter would export  your markup as you've written it.  The format resolver allows for rendering with attributes based on the style.  Even that may not be quite right as it doesn't allow for splitting spans based on a style into separate formatted spans - at least I hadn't thought about that case - might not be that hard but would take some investigation.

  • [SOLVED] Bold monospace fonts and rendering

    Hi everybody,
I chose to use the Inconsolata font (http://www.levien.com/type/myfonts/inconsolata.html) everywhere I need a monospace font.
However I have an issue with this setup. Since Inconsolata font doesn't have a bold variant, when "bolding" it, it gets rendered with a different width (it's not monospace anymore)
This happens, for example, inside an Eclipse editor or even in gEdit.
I've also noticed that in some applications (e.g., gnome-terminal or x-chat), bold is correctly displayed using the same width of the normal variant.
I've read the https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Font_Configuration page and, in particular, the "disable autohinter for bold fonts". I actually don't use the auto-hinter so I tried different configuration but without luck.
Does anyone have an hint for solving this inconsistency?
    Thanks.
P.S.: To better understand what I am talking about you can have a look at this image: http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/85 … olata.png/

If the app doesn't use fontconfig, then changing fontconfig settings won't help
That's clear. But gnome-terminal and gEdit aren't they supposed to use the same backend, i.e., fontconfig?
Because gnome-terminal works fine. gEdit doesn't.
    Thanks.

  • 720 480 sequence with square pixels for web delivery only

i'm on fcp 5.0.4. i've done some text qt exports and all seems to be fine, just want to double-check here. i am editing a sequence of stills. i want my seq settings to be 720x480 square pixels (you can choose 'custom' for this but it will change back to ntsc dv 3:2) because i like the 1.5 (720x480) pixel aspect ratio.
usually when i do 720x480 projects i'm working with dv/non-square footage and when i export for web use i'll choose the 640x480 setting so that it displays correctly on computers.
so the question is: any foreseeable trouble with my using 720x480 with square pixels seq settings if i want to export a qt at those same specs, and it's NOT going to broadcast, just web delivery?
i'm also using compressor - jpeg as part of seq settings unless someone can tell me there's a better compressor to use. (yes i know tiffs would be better but am using jpegs here.)
    thanks.

Yes, there are foreseeable problems of applications assuming that your 720x480 video should have D1-sized pixels, as you've already experienced.
But once you finally end up with a 720x480 square pixel QuickTime movie that you are going to embed into a web page it should play properly.
Just make sure you host the video yourself so you can control its presentation. I bet if you upload it to Vimeo or YouTube those services would also reasonably assume that your video had non-square pixels.

  • Error: Resource cannnot rendered with XML Resource Renderer?

    Hi, KMC fellows,
When I tried to display/edit news with NewsExplorer, it throw me this error from times to times:
"Resource cannnot rendered with XML Resource Renderer"
But I am using the default NewsExplorer without making any custom change, how do I solve this problem?
    Thanks for any constructive inputs.

If you can reproduce it (I know, really "reproducing" is probably not possible) - so if this behaviour occurs while you know / can see from monitoring that no KMC restart has happened - please open an OSS message!

  • Text-input component with auto-complete functionality for mobile

    Hey guys,
I wonder if there is a text-input component with auto-complete functionality optimized for mobile development with AIR like the one that Android provides natively as you can see here http://developer.android.com/reference/android/widget/AutoCompleteTextView.html and here http://developer.android.com/resources/tutorials/views/hello-autocomplete.html.
At least I didn't find it in the latest SDK and I think such a component is pretty standard nowadays. Or did I simply overlook it?
Thank you guys for any advice.
    Regards,
    Thilo

    Hi relaxtraja,
    thanks for your reply!
I knew that there are a lot of auto-complete scripts on the web. What I was hoping was, that Adobe provides an officially supported auto-complete component optimized for mobile as part of the SDK (like in the Android SDK as I pointed out), but that doesn't seem to be the case. It's sad, because it's an essential part of modern UIs in mobile applications.
I've already created an auto-complete component by myself based on Spark components and I will end up using it. But I will have to optimize it for mobile applications beforehands. I just think something this essential should be provided by the SDK.
    However, thanks for posting!

  • Text Caption Bubble with Bottom, Right-hand "Tail"

    Hello,
There have been a number of times when using a Text Caption
bubble with a "tail" (not sure what that's really called) that
sticks out in the bottom right corner of the bubble. I can resize
my text to be able to use a different bubble that is available in
Captivate, but it would just be really nice if there were this
bubble in the set of available bubbles. Does anyone know if one
exists? And how can I add it to the set of choices for
    adding/editing a text caption?
    Thanks in advance!!
    Teresa

    Hi again
Ohhhhhkay. I see a few possibilities.
    1. You may create your own Caption types. This is described
in the Captivate help file as well as on fellow Adobe Community
    Expert Paul Dewhurst's site.
    Click
    here to read Paul's info
    2. You could choose another caption style and use it. But I'm
guessing that's probably not an attractive option.
    3. You could create or find and use just an image that points
where you want. Then cover it with the caption so that it appears
the image is starting from the caption.
    4. You could choose another caption style that has the
Callout Pointers. Then simply insert the caption with the pointer
of your choice in the direction of your choosing. Then place that
behind the other caption. The consolidated result would be the
appearance of your existing caption and the one below.
Actually, #4 was what I was about to suggest for a caption
type that uses callout pointers. Sometimes you have a need to
arbitrarily place the callout pointer. In this case, you do as I
suggested above. Insert a caption with the pointer where you want
it, then cover it with a caption using no callout pointer. You are
then free to position the callout pointer exactly where you want it
    to appear.
    Hopefully something here helps... Rick
