[solved]qemu-kvm, cant start all guests with latest qemu-kvm

Hi there!
I have a problem when I updated qemu-kvm package from 1.0.1-3 to 1.1.0-1
Some Linux guests can get started without problems but other will die after grub tries to load the kernel.
In my messages log i can find the following error when starting a affected guets:
qemu-kvm[2026]: segfault at 10 ip 00007f2845549d0e sp 00007f283d024c00 error 4 in qemu-system-x86_64[7f2845419000+308000]
After downgrading to the previous version i could start the guests again.
Did anyone had similar problems with the current qemu?
Kind regards
Edit: Upgrade to 1.1.1.1 solves the issue

After some reading I found a workaround:
Edit the VM configuration with
#virsh edit <VM NAME>
and replace 'pc-0.15' with "pc-1.1'
<os>
<type arch='x86_64' machine='pc-1.1'>hvm</type>
<boot dev='hd'/>
</os>
The diff output of the changed /etc/libvirt/qemu/<VM_Name>.xml file with the saved one should look like:
#diff test.xml test.xml.sav
15c15
< <type arch='x86_64' machine='pc-1.1'>hvm</type>
> <type arch='x86_64' machine='pc-0.15'>hvm</type>
Now the changed VM start successful

this is my 1st macbook. it is a refurbished laptop. it has snow leopard. i tried to set up an ichat account but it didnt complete the process. can i just start all over again??? with a new name, password, everything??? (for ichat)? i cant remember the name or password i used. help!

    Hi,
iChat 6 in Lion adds the ability to use Yahoo accounts in addition to AIM (valid) names and Jabber IDs and you have not told which you are adding.
The error message does sounds bit like the AIM one.
iChat (And the Messages app in Mountain Lion) can use Apple IDs that end in @mac.com and @me.com
However you must keep the passwords to 16 characters or below as this is the AIM server limit.

  • Starting All Over With OS X and Safari After Update And Crashes

I had posted my troubles in the Safari Section under the same title and got fabulous advice. I was just starting the process of following this advice so that I could get my mac back up from 10.4.7 to 10.4.11 since the genius' at the bar at Apple had re-installed the OS to fix the crashing Safari, Mail and Software update apps.
The advice suggested starting with a permissions repair and a disk verify. Well disk verify may well have come up with the cause for my computer going foobar upon installing the last Apple update in the first place. (Incredible that the Genius Bar guys missed this, especially the week before when I had taken my Mac Mini in for a Procare "Tune-Up." I wonder what the H-E Double Hockey Sticks they did if they didn't verify the disk in the tune-up? Wouldn't that have saved me all manner of distress and trouble!) Here is what verify gave me:
    Verifying volume “Macintosh HD”
    Checking HFS Plus volume.
    Checking Extents Overflow file.
    Checking Catalog file.
    Invalid index key
The volume Macintosh HD needs to be repaired.
Error: The underlying task reported failure on exit
    1 HFS volume checked
    Volume needs repair
So..I will need to, if I understand this correctly, re-start from my install disc holding down the C key and then go to disk utility. I have never done this before and really would like some one to walk me through the procedure.
Just to remind or get you up to speed. I have a mac mini that had been bought with 10.3.7 on it and had been updated all the way to 10.4.11 and Safari 3.0.4 but after the last Java, Quicktime, and Security update Safari, Mail, and Software Update all crashed repeatedly. Genius Bar at Apple got them working again by re-installing the OS but put in 10.4.7 and with it Safari 2.0.4. Now I will need to repair the start up disk. Do I use the Mac Mini "Mac OS X install disc 1 and Apple Hardware Test" disc or do I use the "Mac OS X Tiger" disc that I bought to upgrade my Mac from Panther to Tiger? I think the former rather than the latter but I am uncertain and would really like to know exactly what I need to do before proceeding. Please help!
Then.. what do I do after I re-start using the install disc and have gone to Disk Utility. Will it then darken the "repair" button under "disk," and allow me to click on that to repair the disk? What will that do to the applications and documents that I have in the mac. I actually have my iTunes and iPhoto libraries on external hard drives and are backed-up on yet another external hard drive. I think everything is backed-up. I will perform another back-up before I do anything anyway. Do I leave the externals on and connected while doing the re-start using the install disc or do I disconnect them?
As you can tell, this makes me rather nervous. Thank you so much for any help you can offer! -Charlotte

Hi. Sorry for the delay in responding; Holidays as you know. Anyway... Thanks for your advice.
Yes, I put in the Tiger install disc and holding the c key restarted the computer. Went to Disk Utility and ran Repair Disk. Did it twice as you suggested. The first time it said that there was nothing to repair which was a complete surprise. Ran the verify again and ran Repair Disk again. Each time the report shows no problems. After booting back into the main internal hard drive, I ran disk verify again and it reports no problems.
Someone else on a different post on this subject (I accidently posted this in two different places) stated that the Apple Disk Utility Repair would not be able to make this repair and I would have to get Disk Warrior to make the repair. If Disk Verify reports no problems, wouldn't this mean that running the Repair Disk did repair it?
After all this I went to Apple's site and got the combo update and ran Software Update and gotten my little ppc Mac Mini back up to 10.4.11 and Safari 3.0.4. (I ran permissions repair after the updates as well.) I did not, however, download the last Security Update, as some posters have suggested that I avoid it. What do you think of the Security Update 2007-009? Would this be safe to download and install, now that my mac seems to have had it's directory repaired? Thanks so much. -Charlotte

Can anybody tell me if WTK has problems with Pulseaudio? or how to solve this problem?
    Thank you for your attention,
    Update:
Confirmed. the problem is with sound reproduction, it seem that WTK uses technology from QAudio, and that the implementation of mmapi in linux uses OSS,
there's a way to use OSS applications with pulseaudio, a wrapper called padsp or setting the enviroment variable LD_PRELOAD to libpulsedsp.so.
since i can't start the zayit program with padsp, i used the env variable method, but that didn't work.
So you can say WTK is not compatible with Pulseaudio.
    The solution?
Kill pulseaudio so WTK can use (and block) the Soundcard.
is not a real solution, just a Workaround.

In your own account, the unique preferences file directly related to Pages is:
    <startupVolume>:Users:<yourAccount>:Library:Preferences:com.apple.iWork.Pages.pl ist
There is no reason to remove any other one.
But, before removing it, go to the Preferences menu item to check which is defined as the default template in your own preferences.

  • [SOLVED] Can't install linuxwacom from AUR with latest X Server

Because of this, I can no longer use my pen or touchscreen. My tablet is a Lenovo X61t.
This is probably due to the testing repo as the package's maintainer (gwash) was unable to reproduce this with the latest updates from core and extra installed.
[edit] Perhaps this is because this package is designed to be compatible with version 1.6 of X Server, and I'm using 1.7 (the latest in testing). Are any other tablet users in testing experiencing this problem? [/edit]
[edit] And as I thought, downgrading xorg-server to 1.6 fixed this (this also required downgrading evdev and the intel driver). So it's just linuxwacom's incompatibility with verison 1.7, which will hopefully be fixed soon. Marking the subject line as SOLVED, though the real solution is an update to linuxwacom. [/edit]

  • After an update to Mt.Lion, my iWeb was GONE, leaving me with my website on my host, but all my iWeb information on my computer was totally wiped out. I was able to load iWeb again, but I will have to start all over rebuilding my site...any suggestions?

Has anyone else lost their entire iWeb information after upgrading to MT. Lion? I did manage to upload iWeb again, but it's like I've started all over with no data, so I will have to totally rebuild my site -if I ues iWeb-and upload the entier site again, and I have no guarantees that I won't lose it again.

Did you do a clean install of Mt. Lion, i.e. an erase and install? If you didn't  do a clean instal check inside the User/Library/Applicatrion Support/iWeb folder to see if there's a file there named Domain.sites.
NOTE: In Lion and Mountain Lion the Home/Library folder is now invisible. To make it permanently visible enter the following in the Terminal application window: chflags nohidden ~/Library and press the Return key - 10.7: Un-hide the User Library folder.
If you don't have a backup strategy then this would be a good time to start one.  The simplest to start is to use Time Machine with an external HD that's at least 1.5 times the size of your boot drive.

1st question, how to get the specific model no like mine m500 -xxxx where to find the xxx part?
2nd problem, i have this satelite m500, it works normally like all other laptop, but there's this problem where it randomly happen. It works well in the morning but after i shut down it for some hours, i cant start it anymore. After i press the power button, wat i see is media button light is on, mouse pad light is on, but the screen didnt start up, is like u start up the "light" of the laptop but the inner part is not running at all.
It happen a few times to me before, for those previous case, i jus keep on on and off till it works normally. for now, its not working for more than 12hour.. not sure whats the  main problem. i've check on the ram, its not loosen and it seems working because i can feel the heat.
    please help..

    1) Try starting it without the battery in.
    2) Try starting it on the battery only, without the AC
    3) Power it off, unplug the AC, remove the battery:
        i) then remove the RAM modules,
ii) next replace 1 RAM module in a different slot
      iii) replace battery and AC
       iv) try to restart
        v) repeat i-iv till you get it to start, or you have tried each RAM module in each slot
If you can get it to start with one of these methods, and Windows seems stable running that way, then flash update your BIOS following all the directions. But, you should NOT update the BIOS without the AC plugged in.
If it starts properly after the update, power off, replace everything, and try to power it on again.
    Good luck

I am able to create and run VMs using qemu-kvm directly and with using aqemu-git without any issues.  I am not sure if the direct cause is with Libvirt or if I am using qemu-kvm-spice from AUR (has not caused an issue before).

I had the same problem, however the fix did not work for me.
Tried replacing kvm user and group with qemu (since it exists), same problem.
Reverted and created a kvm user (which did not exist and qemu-kvm package did not create), then the problem changes to
error: Unable to read from monitor: Connection reset by peer
I do not know if it is relevant but when run as root I get:
    # qemu-kvm
Could not initialize SDL(No available video device) - exiting
However as the user of the current login a qemu-kvm starts with no problems.
maybe it indicates a systemd/polkit qxl/SDL driver problem or cgroups problem?
my libvirtd.conf I had set the permissions to polkit but commenting it out to get the defaults changes nothing.
a stab in the dark would predict that since systemd/polkit only allows programmes to run on the login session/seat, it is preventing the kvm/qemu user to run a programme since that user has not logged in?
so I changed the user and group in qemu.conf again but this time to root then the following error :
connecting to monitor: chardev: opening backend "pty" failed
changing it to the current session/seat login username and group:
    success
On the other hand maybe it is as result of a messed up passwd or groups file causing polkit not to work correctly?
UPDATE: the problem also goes away when I remove a SDL display and then use the trusty old(archaic) VNC. so as I said, my guess is the qxl framebuffer and/or SDL is not being granted permission to use the display by polkit or PAM or systemd or whatever is supposed to be granting it permission.  it can probably be fixed with a rule....

  • Kvm: qemu with option "-enable-kvm" or kvm-84 from AUR?

whats the difference between the two? Which one should be preferred?
    thanks!

Yeah, my bad.  The patches to qemu would come from upstream KVM, like they did before.  Avi Kivity, not Tobias.  My mistake there.
And yeah, I think some of those distinctions are us using different semantics.  I'd call the qemu implementation that Avi maintains a fork -- but that is different to me than, as you worded it, kvm being a fork of qemu.  When saying "kvm" and referring to a chunk of code, not what I'll call for this conversation's sake "the kvm project," has always referred to the kvm module -- the kernel code, again hence the name.  Back when the userspace code was just a set of patches to qemu, this confusion was rarer.  (Even after the kvm project started maintaining their own version of the code, they also maintained the qemu patch set to apply to the qemu project -- their version was just qemu, pre-patched.  Avi discusses that philosophy of modifying the original code as little as possible in his most recent blog a few months ago.)  The kvm userspace code is -- again, by Avi's own description -- qemu and libkvm.  (http://www.linux-kvm.org/page/Code - "The kvm userspace code (libkvm and qemu) is available through a git tree.")  kvm-the-project does maintain a prepatched qemu, but that doesn't make it kvm's code -- particularly when kvm's intent all along was to have their patches accepted by qemu, which they now have.  So while you can say that kvm-the-project has within it a build of qemu -- and if you wanted, you could even call it a fork, though the maintainer declines to use the term -- qemu is not kvm.
I'd also add that though the gray area there exists, from a future-discussion perspective it does make things a lot clearer if we refer to kvm the module, the "pure" build of qemu, and kvm's qemu build (or qemu-kvm) as separate.
And by extension, no, kvm-userspace has not reached 10.0.0.  There's a reason that the kvm userspace code just has build numbers.  Its version number is 85.  It would make a lot of sense to say that the kvm-maintained patches were modified and applied to qemu upstream to make qemu 10.0.0, but the post-10 stability patches for kvm were applied independently to qemu and qemu-kvm -- qemu-kvm basically getting just kvm-related stability patches, which are submitted upstream to qemu (and thus qemu-kvm moving up in build number), and qemu using the qemu-kvm patches as well as patches relating to other parts of the system.
Getting back to the meat of the question, it is important to note that the kvm we're getting from the arch package is NOT the kvm that you would get from building the download file.  You called it clean, and you're absolutely right -- it's *too* clean.  Download the KVM package from sourceforge, build, and do a make -n install; you get:
    make -C kernel DESTDIR="" install
    make -C libkvm DESTDIR="" install
    make -C qemu DESTDIR="" install
Which makes sense if you read their docs -- the KVM build, as per KVM, come as a (independent of the kernel) set of modules and a QEMU build to go with those modules, just like it was before it was accepted by linux-kernel.  (You could probably have noticed that kernel modules were being build when you run make, but there was so much stuff in there that I thought it easier to cut/paste the install phase for clarity.)  The Arch PKGBUILD, however, just compiles qemu-kvm and its necessary libraries:
for dir in libkvm user qemu extboot; do
            cd ${srcdir}/kvm-${pkgver}/${dir}
            make || return 1
        done
and then hand-installs those components without the kernel modules meant to go with it.  Unless the package builder knows something the KVM developer doesn't, I wouldn't go around using that qemu build with whatever KVM module version from whatever different kernel version you may have willy-nilly.
If I had the hankering to run the KVM maintained userspace stuff, I'd do what they said and run their kernel stuff too.  I think a proper KVM build should do that.  But that's not my call, since I'm not the extra maintainer.  As it stands, for me I'd rather use the in-kernel version, which I think will get the kernel-side patches that the KVM project's kernel code gets anyway since there is so much attention on the kernel, but also has the benefit of the qemu userspace code getting bug fixes from the qemu devs themselves.  It sounded to me like that was the direction kvm itself was moving.  But to each their own, of course.  I'd just say better to stick all the way with one or all the way with the other method, and not just start making hybrids without a much deeper knowledge of the code than I think any of us have.

  • I have a current iPhone 5 with all my apps and games at certain levels, how do I use iCloud to transfer current game levels as only a few games have transferred and other games want me to start all over again on my new iPad?

I currently have an iPhone 5 that I play games on regularly and I have just bought the iPad 4 and I want to transfer all my game progress from the iPhone to the iPad. I have turned on iCloud on both devices and backed up and while all my games transfer only some of the games maintain progress where others want me to start all over again. I pretty sure I doing something wrong... Can some help or give me idiot proof guidance on how do do this successfully. I'm generally pretty tech savvy but this has me stumped and iCloud is ment to be easy to use.

I would not be able to give you idiot proof guide, since different games are different. Some of them have icloud integrated already, but those already taken care of. Some of them use specific logins and once you log - you get your info. General recommendation is to contact support sites of those games for enabling icloud instructions or enabling of transfer. There are other purely apple ways - like sync your phone in itunes and then sync apps with ipad, but those are only one time transfer. There is another way that is not typically recommended - restoring ipad from iphone backup. It may transfer your game content, but once again sync in the future has to be done by game.
So if I were you, I would address that individually with every game provider.

  • HT2558 I am trying to upload software but each time I am asked to upload a box pops up with install and restart. I press this, the computer restarts and I start all over again. No authentication icon appears.

I am trying to update software on my macbook pro. From the apple menu, I click "check updates", software is then checked and a list presented of software that I require downloading. I then tick the relevant applications. The blue bar with "install and restart" appears, I press this, the computer goes into restart mode, I login and start all over again.
i seem to be in a loop! No authentical dialogue box appears for me to enter my name and password.
    Any suggestions please!

Hi, try a refresh that'll bypass the cache with the Shift key + F5 (or Shift-click on reload) which is the same as clearing your browser cache (Ctrl+F5 for the Internet Exploder). If that doesn't work, then you can try a new firefox [https://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Profiles profile] just to see if it's (your) Firefox-related or maybe an actual problem with the site (maybe starting Firefox in [[Safe Mode]] can be a quicker check).
