[SOLVED] radeon/radeon dual GPU halp:)

Hey all, I just got a new laptop with radeon/radeon hybrid gpus and I'm a little lost as to how to go about setting anything up. The hybrid wiki only really mentions ati/intel, but I've got both my cards on the radeon driver.
I'm pretty sure arch has both cards going full tilt because the laptop is getting pretty hot and I can change the backlight in /sys/class/backlight/ for either video card and they both change the screen brightness.
I'm also not even sure which card is which;
# lspci |grep -i vga
00:01.0 VGA compatible controller: Advanced Micro Devices [AMD] nee ATI Device 9647
02:00.0 VGA compatible controller: Advanced Micro Devices [AMD] nee ATI Seymour [Radeon HD 6400M Series]
I though both cards are 6400m series, the dedicated is a 6470M and I thought I remembered seeing the integrated card as a 6400-series as well on windows when I first got it, but I'm no longer sure.
here they are in lshw
description: VGA compatible controller

I was thinking of picking one of the cards and writing an xorg.conf to try and disable one and enable the other at x launch, but before I do that does anyone have any words of wisdom or anywhere I should look for guidance? Also is it strange that even with both video cards going on the opensource driver compositing is very slow?
EDIT: ok so I've fixed the compiz and I did try a xorg.conf that specifies one of the devices; this is over my head though. Is specifying the card in the xorg.conf enough to keep one of the cards idle?
EDIT2: nah both cards are still burning full tilt, lm-sensors has both going ~70-74 degrees like they're crunching my math homework
thanks all.

Hey Pres, thanks for the reply
Yea nothing in the BIOS, and sorry specifying by BusId is what I meant by using xorg.conf, so I do have only one specified, though with both cards on the same driver I am unable to blacklist one of them.
I have looked a bit at the ati wiki for powersaving but it doesn't really seem to matter what I do to the cards in terms of power profile.. switching from profile to dynamic didn't seem to change much, nor did specifying a low power profile for one of them. I'm going to install an opengl game when I get home and see what I can see when switching between profiles, but so far in terms of temperature the power profiles didn't seem to have much effect.
Edit: is trying to put only one of the cards on the prop driver possible/a good idea? Could I then blacklist the open source driver for the dedicated card?

  • Graphics Error AMD Radeon HD 7640G/7670M Dual GPU

    HI,
I am facing a problem with my HP Pavilion g6-2301ax Notebook PC with AMD Radeon HD 7640G/7670M Dual GPU (2 GB DDR3 dedicated) with Windows 8 64-bit. I haven't made any changes to the hardware/software nor have I connected any new hardwares.
I cannot watch Videos no matter what program I use, be it VLC, Media Player, etc. The programs simply crashes. It takes quite a considerable time to boot and Restart/Shut-Down, than before.  Here's a screenshot of the error message...
Also, the AMD Catalyst Control Centre keeps crashing...
Before, the Graphics Control Interface was totally different. The so called "Hydra Grid" wasn't there. The Control Menu had more options and the ability to customise. Since, it is a Dual GPU, there was an option whether to choose both or just one. This problem started like 2-3 days back.
I am really really frustrated. Because of this, my work is getting hampered a lot. Also, it doesn't read an external Hard Drive which has USB 3.0, even though the "safely remove icon" is shown at the task bar. And now, because of this I can't even Back-up my files on to the external hard drive in order to Recover or Restore it to Factory Settings.
    Somebody help me.
    Warm Regards,
    Zamyang.

    Hi @cheemsay ,
    Welcome to the HP Forums!

For you to have the best experience in the HP forum I would like to direct your attention to the HP Forums Guide Learn How to Post and More
I understand that you are unable to play videos regardless of what player you try.  You have not made any physical changes to your notebook or added any external hardware.
When you connected your External drive you get the safely remove icon but does not install the drive.
If you look in device manager does the external drive have any bangs or error on it.  Have you checked the manufacturers site for a driver for it?
If you check disk management does it have a drive letter assigned to it?
    Here is a link to
Testing for Hardware Failures (Windows 8) that may to determine the cause.
You state  this happened  only 2 -3 days ago and you cannot do a restore as the external is not being seen correctly but you should be able to do a recovery back to factory.
Do you know in updates were automatically installed?
Here  is a link to Performing an HP system recovery (Windows 8)  that will guide you through the recovery process.
    I hope this helps!

  • Is a Radeon 7700 series GPU OK in a 5,1?

I have recently pulled my GTX670 from my Mac Pro so I can put it a PC that I am building.
Can I use a Radeon 7700 series GPU in my Mac?
Could I put in two Radeon 7700s and use them in CrossFire mode?
I don't want to buy another powerful GPU at the moment and am hoping a Radeon 7700 GPU will be OK, but I do want to be able to run X-Plane.  At the moment I have got a Radeon 5450 installed in the Mac.  Unsprisingly X-Plane 10 runs really badly on this GPU
    TIA for a reply.

They will only work in Windows. OSX does not support Crossfire or any of the GPUs you listed, thats why your game runs so poorly (you're not getting any GPU acceleration).

  • CC & Dual GPU

    My new build is running a GTX570oc , I can pickup a 660ti for $200 to add.
I know sli was unsupported a while back, but what's the workings of CC and its dual GPU support ?
Will it utilize both cards and unlike sli doesn't matter if they are a matching pair ?
The 660 has 2.5 times the cuda cores at a fraction slower bandwidth so I think ill get some good results.
Does dual GPU in CC require much setup/tinkering and does it just use both, or make a primary and secondary ?
    Thanks
    Troy

    Troy,
Dual GPU in CC is trivial to set up and requires no tinkering for the additional card. Of course, this assumes that you have enough power supply, PCIex16 slots, MPE hack, and cooling for the additional card(s). You do not need to SLI the cards to get the benefits in Premiere Pro. I did read on this forum that it works with mis-matched GPUs, but I've only seen that verified for cards using a common driver. As you probably know, the two cards that you mention do share a common driver from nVidia.
You need to ask yourself why are you doing this though? For most rigs, I would expect that with a single decent GTX video card already in place that the only speed gain would be for DVD renders. For most other work flows, other items in the PC would be the limiting resource (CPU power, drive speed, etc.). On the other hand, if you are constantly doing DVD exports for high-def media, then the increased number of cuda cores will make your world so much better.
See the following post regarding for my test results on a dual GTX Titan setup where adding a second video card doubled DVD exports, but left pretty much all others performance areas completely unchanged:

  • Dual GPU's

Is Aperture able to leverage any advantage from dual GPU's?
    quad G5   Mac OS X (10.4.4)

Is Aperture able to leverage any advantage from dual
    GPU's?
I think Aperture would beenfit to some extent, because while CoreImage is using the GPU's so is the rest of the system. Also possibly it could split CoreImage work across both GPU's, do not know enough details about how Core Image uses the video cards to say for sure.
A stronger video card is always going to help out Aperture to some degree though.

  • [SOLVED} ATI Radeon 4650 RV730 (HDMI) 1080p and Audio

    Hi,
I am quite new to arch linux, however have used linux before (Ubuntu, Fedora, Slackware and had a go at LFS). I have a Radeon HD 4650 connected via HDMI (DVI > HDMI) to my tv. (BEKO PANACHE 26" (Ubuntu said it is a BEKO-VJAZ1 32")), I have tried the flgrx driver in ubuntu but could only get 1080i at 25hz, however in windows i had 1080p at 60 with overscan, which i then scaled down. In ubuntu i had audio as well. I tried using the x386-video-ati and radeonhd. I got a black screen with radeonhd and ati i could only get 1920x1080 at 25hz (1080i) (With about -5% overscan). However in arch linux i am not getting any look. My TV also supports VGA, however i can't get into a tty as i get out of range, when INIT starts. Basicly my tv reports a incorrect EDID and the ati drivers only give me 1080i. I think i might need a custom modeline but dont know where to start.
    Does anyone have any suggestions?

    [SOLVED\EDIT]
    *facepalms at my stupidness*
I reinstalled arch linux and then installed XFCE. After that i went onto the AUR and downloaded catalyst-test and libcatalyst32. I then did a makepkg -s --asroot on both and when i went back into XFCE, after creating a xorg with (Xorg --configure and added flgrx to the Driver line) I went into the Catalyst Control Center (sudo amdcccle) (or su root | amdcccle) and went into the section called DTV (1) and went to the 2nd tab and clicked the check box next to 1080p at 50hz (PAL) and then clicked apply. After that i went into the scaling options and set GPU Scaling, and then on the dropdown i selected Aspect Ratio. After that i clicked apply and moved the slider for overscan 1 towards underscan. I then clicked ok, and to get the catalyst to save to the Xorg i had to go to Settings -> Display settings and change the resoloution to any one there, and then back to 1920x1080. Then i clicked apply which saved to my xorg.
    Sound worked automaticly.

I have removed the xorg.conf file and run the glxinfo, I got this:
    OpenGL vendor string: Mesa Project
    OpenGL renderer string: Software Rasterizer
OpenGL version string: 2.1 Mesa 7.7
OpenGL shading language version string: 1.20
    OpenGL extensions:

What shall I do next? I am a real rookie.

    xf86-video-intel xf86-video-vesa xf86-video-fbdev
So its the xf86-video-ati, which is used.

    Hi slacknatcher,
    thanks for your help :-)
I looked at this logfile and there xorg just stops for thirty seconds.
    [ 35.404] (II) xfree86: Adding drm device (/dev/dri/card0)
    [ 55.110] (II) xfree86: Adding drm device (/dev/dri/card1)
So I figured out that for mysterious reasons the radeon kernel module was loaded twice.
I removed it from the kernel modules (mkinitcpi.conf) and the thirty second lag vanished

  • ATI Radeon no Mercury GPU?

Recently reinstalled Windows. However now, Premiere 5 jerks and jumps when trying to playback a video file that's not exactly to the specifics of the sequence options -- however, before the reinstall everything was fine! I think it might be that it's no long using the GPU? I'm using an ATI Radeon 5700, and the AVI files from Fraps were playing back fine before the reinstall.
Anyway I can actually make Prem use the GPU? Or is there a setting in the CCC that needs to be changed?
(Edit: the only thing that has changed is the moniter, but surely that wouldn't change anything?)
(Edit2: OK, found out that GPU is only for nVidia cards, but still is there aynthing that could have changed this?)

Ok. Well. I found out what was wrong. It was the FPS overlap fraps does. The overlay was over the preview window and causing jumping and feezing, once it was turned off and no number present, it was smooth as anything.

Not yet sorry. Still getting the same problem. I'm using radeon open source drivers right now and i got some problem on these ones too,
    framebuffer issues at boot.
    Kernel version: 3.6.11-1-ARCH
With free driver only works for me using VGA. The laptop screen is not nothing, just blinks.

  • [SOLVED] X11 + radeon hd 4650 = artifacts

Fresh arch install on a laptop with radeon hd 4650.
Decided to try radeon hd driver first (haven't really read into which is best for which chipsets), installed it, ran 'Xorg -configure' and X starts just fine, but crashes (and flashes colours) when I try to quit it and all tty's are blank black screens.
Next try is with xf86-video-ati, no problems with getting out of X but there are some artifacts including:
    - icons in Tint2's systray aren't displayed properly, not displayed at all or mismatched
    - lxappearance is almost unreadable
    - graphical text editors colour all lines black on startup, they remain this way until you do something, click on it, input text, scroll etc.
I'm using openbox, here is my xorg.conf

I also tried hwd but it only generates xorg.conf with the vesa driver (with which the artifacts don't occur by the way).

Tried that several times, also using hwd.

I suffered from this exact problem with my HD 4330. I've tried everything, finally I've given up, downgraded X.org to 1.6 and installed the catalyst driver. Doing fine ever since.
I know catalyst sucks in general, but in my case this is the only working option.
Good to know I'm not alone, and that there's a working solution, even if I have to downgrade.

  • [solved] AMD Radeon - strange behaviour after mesa-update

    Good afternoon Ladies and Gentlemen,
This is my first posting, I will try to give as much as detailed information refering to my problem as possible. Please be patient if I ask for solutions which for you all seem easy and logical, I am a Newbie.
The details: I am running a HP Pavilion 17 " AMD Quadcore laptop, 8gb Ram, Arch Linux 32bit Kernel 3.17.1 XFCE desktop with an AMD Radeon graphic card for about a few weeks now. Everything went fine so far, but last Saturday I did an update via pacman-Syu, the update included a mesa package. All went smooth as ever. Then after a reboot the XFCE desktop had stripes across the laptop screen, the mouse cursor had disappeared, also letters of the icon descriptions and the menus were missing, some strange "hieroglyphics" appeared instead of them. I wasn't able to downgrade the mesa-package as I nearly wasn't able to open the terminal because of the missing mouse cursor, then I managed somehow to get into the terminal and gave in the commands but the writing was incomplete and/or did not work because of these strange and missing letters.
No problem, I thought to myself, a fresh install will do the work, so I wipped my hard drive using Parted Magic, then I did a fresh Arch install (Netinstall), this time using LXDE instead of XFCE as my desktop environment. When I booted into the login screen first, it looked fine but after logging into the desktop all the stripes, the missing mouse cursor and the strange letters appeared again. So is there any solution to that strange behaviour ? Before the Saturday-update everything worked without any problems for weeks. BTW other OS work without these problems, I tried Macpup just for fun, no messing-up with my Radeon graphics card happened.
Sorry for my piss poor English I am Austrian. Sorry for eventually causing any inconvenience asking this question. Regards, Fladi.

    downgrade linux kernel to linux-3.16.4
    download: http://seblu.net/a/arm/packages/l/linux … pkg.tar.xz
    pacma -U linux-3.16.4-1-i686.pkg.tar.xz
    edit /etc/pacman.conf

On a laptop, free drivers, linux 3.17.1-pae, openbox, procesor core i5, vga integrated card - everything OK
The screenshots you posted match exactly to my problem ! Are you really sure the bug is coming from Kernel 3.17 ? I had this kernel running for about a week without any problems, the problems came when updating mesa.

  • Radeon 9200 Dual Monitor Setup

Hello! I have a powermac G4, 466 digital audio that has the default graphics card on AGP. I also have an ATi Radeon 9200 series that is PCI. Would I be able to use both cards at the same time? The Radeon isn't the mac edition, but would the drivers for the mac version work?
    Thanks, Ben

Running two cards and having two monitors is a great setup if you have the room for it on your desk.
I am not sure about your specific card. Mac-compatible cards have software on the card which I believe acts as the driver, and putting a pure PC card in your Mac will not work (somebody correct me if I'm wrong). I have seen reference to "flashed" PC cards where somebody took a PC card and then wrote Mac firmware to the card so they would now work on a Mac, but you'd need to check if that had been done with your card.

  • [Solved] AMD Radeon HD 7790 Graphics Card

I just put a new graphics card in my box, and I got the drivers mostly working. Operation works normally most of the time, but I see issues when launching certain applications and sometimes when switching between ttys.
I'm using the proprietary drivers, following the instructions on https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/ATI_Catalyst
Every once in a while, there is a quick flicker when opening applications, but when starting something like Steam or running 'glxinfo | grep "direct rendering"' (recommended in the article to check whether things are working) the display freezes and begins flickering. This is only fixed by switching to another tty and rebooting.
I checked my /var/log/Xorg.0.log file after one of these episodes and found a backtrace with a message about a segmentation fault, but I cannot find it anymore.
Sorry there isn't much information here, but I'm not sure what else is relevant and I haven't been able to locate anything useful on The Internet

After lots of poking around and debugging, I came to suspect my DE as the problem, I've been trying out Enlightenment. I installed KDE and tried a few of the things that have been causing crashes, and so far so good.
Since I haven't seen any more signs of issues (yet), I'll mark this as solved.
