[SOLVED] Removing systemctl service trouble

Hello
During installation I followed the instructions below:
cd /etc/netctl
cp examples/wireless-wpa my-network
to create a config for my wireless network. The problem I have now is that I have since renamed that file to not include the "-" character, but the systemctl unit remains:
netctl@my\x2dnetwork.service enabled
I would like to remove it. However, running
systemctl disable netctl@my\x2dnetwork.service
Does not work. Its still there, listed as active. Running
systemctl disable [email protected]
Does not work either. How can I get rid of it?

"does not work"? What happened, what was the output? systemctl tells you when it removes symlinks, but if the service is not enabled, it will do nothing. And disable does not stop the service, so it should be no surprise that it is still active. What would be interesting is whether is it also still listed as "enabled".
I think systemctl didn't output anything and the service is indeed still enabled, because when you use a shell to run that command, you need to prevent the shell from treating the backslash as an escape character, otherwise you're disabling the service named "[email protected]" and that one was never enabled in the first place. Escape the backslash using another backslash (my\\x2dnetwork) or put single quotes around in.

    Scratch that erroneous root of the problem. Deleting the entries from HKLM software, microsoft, windows, currrentversion, run, except the modem (which I need for sound when faxing), permits the computer to shutdown with all bootcamp services remaining installed from the CD (version 2.1). msconfig does not fix the issue by merely turning off the startup programs -- I do not know why deleting the registry entries fixes the problem, versus just deselecting them in msconfig, but it does. I previously did this a a few days ago but could not remember what actually fixed the problem -- and upon a reinstallation the problem returned. So for future reference, the registry entries for programs loaded on startup prevents XP pro from shutting down and restarting properly -- one was something to do with bluetooth, one relates to the realtek audio driver, one relates to the apple keyboard, and another one ?

    I subsequently noticed that I had fluidsynth installed, and a pacman -Qi said that it was installed as a dependency for another package, but that no other packages currently required it.  So I removed it.

  • [SOLVED] dhcpcd@eth0.service failure

    I am trying to move from initscripts to systemd on a server I have no physical access to (luckily I do have a rescue system...).
    With only network left in DAEMONS, connectivity comes up just fine, and I see a "dhcpcd -q" process running in the background.
    However, removing that last initscripts daemon and using [email protected] fails.
    The server has eth0 only and a static IP.
    % sudo systemctl start [email protected]
    Job for [email protected] failed. See 'systemctl status [email protected]' and 'journalctl' for details.
    % systemctl status [email protected]
    [email protected] - dhcpcd on eth0
    Loaded: loaded (/usr/lib/systemd/system/[email protected]; enabled)
    Active: failed (Result: resources) since Tue, 16 Oct 2012 11:26:05 +0200; 44s ago
    Process: 14105 ExecStart=/sbin/dhcpcd -A -q -w %I (code=exited, status=0/SUCCESS)
    CGroup: name=systemd:/system/[email protected]/eth0

    Oct 16 11:26:05 cutie.skaaf.net systemd[1]: Failed to start dhcpcd on eth0.
    The relevant part of journalctl comes in two shapes, I'm not sure what that depends on.
    Oct 16 11:26:05 xxx systemd[1]: Starting dhcpcd on eth0...
    Oct 16 11:26:05 xxx dhcpcd[14105]: sending commands to master dhcpcd process
    Oct 16 11:26:05 xxx dhcpcd[314]: control command: dhcpcd[14105]: sending commands to master dhcpcd process
    Oct 16 11:26:05 xxx dhcpcd[314]: handle_args: no interface
    Oct 16 11:26:05 xxx dhcpcd[314]: control command: /sbin/dhcpcd -A -q -w eth0
    Oct 16 11:26:05 xxx systemd[1]: PID file /run/dhcpcd-eth0.pid not readable (yet?) after start.
    Oct 16 11:26:05 xxx systemd[1]: Failed to start dhcpcd on eth0.
    Oct 16 11:26:05 xxx systemd[1]: Unit [email protected] entered failed state.
    and
    Oct 16 11:27:14 xxx systemd[1]: Starting dhcpcd on eth0...
    Oct 16 11:27:14 xxx dhcpcd[14145]: sending commands to master dhcpcd process
    Oct 16 11:27:14 xxx dhcpcd[314]: control command: dhcpcd[14145]: sending commands to master dhcpcd process
    Oct 16 11:27:14 xxx systemd[1]: PID file /run/dhcpcd-eth0.pid not readable (yet?) after start.
    Oct 16 11:27:14 xxx systemd[1]: Failed to start dhcpcd on eth0.
    Oct 16 11:27:14 xxx systemd[1]: Unit [email protected] entered failed state.
    Now maybe this is trying to tell me that dhcpcd is already running? However the result is the same with "systemctl restart ...".
    Upon boot up with no network DAEMON but [email protected] enabled, I simply can't get in.
    I also tried editing /usr/lib/systemd/system/dhcpcd\@.service and making everything explicit in ExecStart, but I don't see any more useful output, and systemctl still claims the start failed.
    Running dhcpcd eth0 explicitly gives no error exit code:
    % sudo dhcpcd eth0
    dhcpcd[14347]: sending commands to master dhcpcd process
    Questions:
    - why does systemctl think the start failed?
    - can I find any more debugging info anywhere? Perhaps reboot with sytemd dhcpcd only and redirect journalctl logs to a text file that I can then view from the rescue system?
    - why does network DAEMON manage to start dhcpcd, while systemd fails?
    Thanks for any help or pointers in advance!

    Glad you got it working. I would go ahead and mark it as solved.
    nickray wrote:Is there a way to do the "systemctl enable" from a rescue system (by editing some file), as was
    possible before with /etc/rc.conf? Otherwise I would never have been able to solve this .
    When you do a systemctl enable, it shows you what it's doing, making a symlink. If you need to do it by hand, you just have to make the appropriate symlink in /etc/systemd/system to the service file in /usr/lib/systemd/system
    nickray wrote:Scimmia, any pointers to read more about the DHCD/DHCPCD issues?
    The place I usually start is Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dhcp
    To put it simply, it lets a DHCP client (dhcpcd = dhcp client daemon) request networking information from a DHCP server. The server selects an IP from the pool of IP addresses that it has, and sends that information back to the client along with all the other needed network configuration info. The client automatically configures everything and you're up and running without having to do any manual configuration at all.

  • [SOLVED] Stopping openvpn@ service on suspend

    I'm trying to stop any running openvpn@ service either prior to suspend or immediately after resume. I've got a service file enabled:
    [Unit]
    Description=Root suspend actions
    Before=sleep.target
    [Service]
    Type=forking
    ExecStart=-/home/firecat53/.local/bin/suspend.sh

    and the helper script suspend.sh:
    #!/bin/sh
    # Helper script to stop openvpn on suspend
    /usr/bin/systemctl stop $(/usr/bin/systemctl | grep openvpn@ | awk '{print $1}')
    The helper script works fine when run by itself, but it fails when run from the service file, and openvpn is still running. I've also tried it post-resume, with the same results.
    # journalctl
    Sep 18 19:56:54 scotty suspend.sh[10544]: Failed to issue method call: Invalid argument
    $ systemctl status suspend.sh

    Thanks for the tip! Solved by extending [email protected] in /etc/systemd/system/[email protected]/suspend_conflict.conf
    [Unit]
    Conflicts=suspend.target sleep.target
    Now it kills the openvpn@ service on suspend and doesn't restart it automatically on resume, which is the behavior I was looking for.

  • [SOLVED] systemd adsl service does not start

    After the today's upgrade of my system I get lines like this in my journal, as the adsl service does not want to start.
    # router systemd[522]: Failed at step EXEC spawning /usr/sbin/pppoe-start: No such file or directory
    The problem is, that pppoe-start is in /usr/bin/ and not in /usr/sbin. According to pacman (pacman-Ql rp-pppoe) /usr/bin/ is the correct location.
    I really don't know, why systemd is trying to launch it, because even the service file (/usr/lib/systemd/system/adsl.service) points to the correct location.
    [Unit]
    Description=ADSL Deamon
    [Service]
    Type=forking
    ExecStart=/usr/bin/pppoe-start
    ExecStop=/usr/bin/pppoe-stop
    [Install]
    WantedBy=multi-user.target
    The service is launching and stopping with pppoe-start and pppoe-stop.
    When launched, it also shuts down fine when stopping it by
    systemctl stop adsl
    Why the hell is it trying to launch from /usr/sbin/?
    Last edited by scar (2013-06-04 13:07:23)

    It goes definitely against any logic.
    The service file looks good, but I've copied it to /usr/lib/systemd/system/bdsl.service. Same contents - and the new one launches succesfully.
    I've deleted the original ...adsl.service file, verified that it disappeared, copied it back from the new bdsl.service file, and it still does not launch.
    [EDIT]
    I've erased the drive, restored the system from a 1 week old backup, started it - everything worked. Then I'v updated the whole system, including the rp-pppoe package, and the adsl service is failing again.
    Downgrading solves the problem. Should I file a bug report?

  • I have finally solved my SMB sharing troubles

    Hi!
    I have read two most enlightening postings regarding ACLs and POSIX rights. I have always seen that they both affect access rights but have not been able to figure it out quite right. It seems very easy on first sight but it is not. Just try to edit MS Office document on a Windows PC right on the SMB share and you will see what I am talking about. But to cut the long story short, here's what I have done with my SMB configuration and why.
    1) I modified /etc/smb.conf to disable streams support.
    ; stream support = yes
    vfs objects = darwinacl
    We don't need or use streams on our shares, buaving them enabled will occasionally block files from being read from the share. So in our case it is better to disable them.
    2) I have removed all Deny statements from ACLs.
    If you edit documents on the SMB share using MS Office, ACLs get messed up big time. The most important thing is that you don't know where you Deny ACEs will end up, so they could be the first thing in the ACL and you could be denied of any access.
    3) I have set all POSIX rights to None on all directories and files.
    darwinacl module will combine the POSIX rights and the ACL and will show POSIX rights as ACL entries to the Windows client. If the Windows client now saves something, the combined entries will all land in the saved file's ACL. E.g. if you have POSIX right r/w for group staff, the ACL will have an entry for group Users afterwards.
    All in all I have only set ACLs to allow selective Allow rights for directories and no Deny statements at all. It works pretty well on Windows clients and also on Mac SMB clients. I have not enabled AFP at all for easier management.
    The only downside is that the access-rights-limited directories are still listed for everyone who has access to the level above them.
    Oh, for everyone who is interested in the two postings I read and found so good, here's the link:
    http://lists.apple.com/archives/Macos-x-server/2008/May/msg00335.html
    See the reply too, that's the second interesting posting.
    Hopefully someone will find this information helpful! I have seen too many cries for help on this same issus.
    Best regards,
    Andrus Suitsu

    I have experienced some new troubles with my shares. This time it is with OS X 10.6.2 smb client only. If a Windows user creates a new folder on a Leopard share, it has all the good POSIX rights and good ACL also. The POSIX owner has changed to the creator, but that should be fine. But still only the creator can access that folder over SMB from 10.6.2 client. Windows XP clients are not affected by this problem. From the Server Manager everything looks good, only the POSIX owner is different. Looking at the directory from the command-line reveals that the new folder has Execute bits set while other have not. Clearing the X bits made the problem go away.
    You cannot change the share settings directly in /var/samba/shares because Leopard will overwrite your changes. So I changed the share settings using WGM (log in to Local). Clicked the last icon (2 concentric rings) and chose SharePoints. Then went and changed smb_createmask and smb_directorymask to 0000. This is okay, because I use only ACL to grant access to whoever needs it.
    I then ran the /usr/libexec/samba/synchronize-shares script to write out the files in /var/samba/shares. After restarting the SMB service, things were once more better than before I started. New folders and files are created with empty POSIX rights, which is exactly what I need.
