[SOLVED]Setting Default Keyboard

I am VERY new to Archlinux, and I am just installing it into OpenSuse/Virtualbox.
My question is so basic, it's embarrassing. When Archlinux first starts (in the shell), it defaults to the US keyboard. I have to issue the command "loadkeys uk"  everytime.
How do I get it to start up with the UK keyboard configuration?
My apologies again for such a basic question
Thanks in advance

Hey Steve where exactly is that restore default located in the preferences? I must be blind because I cant seem to find it. It doesnt seem like many people on this board know either.

  • Setting Default Keyboard Language

I just acquired an PowerBook G4 and the thing is set to always turn on with the keyboard set to French language.
Once running I know how to switch between English and French settings (and we do use the French at times).
I would like to have the English keyboard as my default at startup.
    Any thoughts?
    Thanks

    Hi everybody,
Can somebody please enlight me where I can make
system wide changes to the default keyboard layout?OK, I have found out that I am supposed to reboot, cancel the boot process and enter what seems to be one or another system configuration utility. There I can change the layout to German and save the configuration with a name, for example "german'. Now what?! I can only enter the configuration details again with F2 or run the scan, there's no way to exit the the routine and use the fresh installation. When I reboot by doing ctrl+alt+del everything I saved is lost the next time I enter the utility.
I am pretty disappointed by the way things are handled in Solaris. Online documentation is pretty poor too. Compared to other common Unix platforms such as *BSD or common Linux distributions everything takes hours instead of minutes, all the defaults are set to the worst possible options, nothing can be found where it is expected to be found.
It would be pretty cool if there was a sample document that descibes these common troubles for people like me with a *BSD and GNU/Linux background.
    Questions like;
How do I change the default keyboard layout?
Where can I change the default shell to BASH?
How do I change the PATH environment variable for all users?
    and such should be answered.
So far I am miles away from a productive system and I'm already regretting Solaris before I have even used it because I wasted days just to install the bare essentials.
    thanks,
    Tobias

  • [solved] Gnome default keyboard layout

    Hi guys,
Can anybody please explain me why the following command works but the corresponding .conf entry does not?
    setxkbmap -layout "us,pl,de" -option "grp:alt_shift_toggle"
    [orschiro@thinkpad ~]$ cat /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/01-keyboard-layout.conf
    Section "InputClass"
    Identifier "keyboard"
    MatchIsKeyboard "yes"
    Option "XKBMODEL" "pc105"
    Option "XkbLayout" "us,pl"
    Option "XkbVariant" "altgr-intl,"
    Option "XkbOptions" "grp:alt_shift_toggle"
    EndSection
When using the .conf entry simply nothing happens.
    Regards
    EDIT
I was able to identify my problem. See the following:
The above .conf does not work since Gnome seems to fetch a default US keyboard layout from somewhere which I cannot figure out where it is. Without any invocation from my side Gnome assumes this US keyboard. However, I do not want to us the default US keyboard layout but the altgr-intl option.
    Screenshot
So as a workaround I have to run setxkbmap -layout us -variant altgr-intl after Gnome had started. But I would like to understand how Gnome assigns the default keyboard layouts.
Last edited by orschiro (2013-06-26 07:57:29)

I still do not understand where the default keyboard layout is taken from. However, I use a workaround and created a file .keyboard in my home directory which is launched after startup of Gnome and changes the layouts according to my setkxbmap settings.
    More information.

  • [SOLVED] setting X keyboard layout

    Hello!
I would like to set my X "keyboard layout" as is dictated here.
I created a file "/etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/10-tipkovnica.conf" which i wrote like this:
    Section "InputClass"
    Identifier "Keyboard Defaults"
    MatchIsKeyboard "yes"
    Option "XkbLayout" "si"
    Option "XkbVariant" "alternatequotes"
    EndSection
When i wrote this i tried to check if it works, but when i type in command
    setxkbmap -print -verbose 10
    i get an error:
    Setting verbose level to 10
    Cannot open display "default display"
    How can i solve this?

I thought so. That's why it's not working. You need to be in X (that's what "Cannot open display default display" means).

  • [SOLVED] Setting default audio capture device

I have a USB webcam with a microphone that is recognized by ALSA after the on-board line-in. This is fine in Skype because I can set the capture device to the USB microphone, but Flash seems to only use the first capture device (listing only "Linux Microphone") recognized by ALSA. Is there any way to set the default (presumably, the first) audio capture device, or get Flash to see my USB microhone?

Solved by creating ~/.asoundrc file containing the following:
    pcm.usb
    type hw
    card U0x46d0x81d
    pcm.!default
    type asym
    playback.pcm
    type plug
    slave.pcm "dmix"
    capture.pcm
    type plug
    slave.pcm "usb"

  • [SOLVED]Setting x11 keyboard map PERMANENTLY for all.

    Read carefully through https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Ke … on_in_Xorg.
Ran 'localectl set-x11-keymap gb' as instructed.  Confirmed this creates: /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/00-keyboard.conf
Ran 'grep "config directory" /var/log/Xorg.0.log'  which confirms that this /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d is where it's looking.
Ran 'grep "xkb"  /var/log/Xorg.0.log'  which confirms that 'Option "xkb_layout "gb"' is the ONLY one found. (it appears several times).
    But setxkbmap -print -verbose 10 shows xkb_symbols { include "pc+us+inet(evdev"  }
and the keyboard map is STILL 'us'.   @=" etc...
Reread the wiki, still don't understand.
Typing 'setxlbmap gb' into a terminal works for the session.
Adding that to .xinitrc before the window manager command has NO effect.
I tried adding the option to 10-evdev.conf, but that doesn't do it.
So HOW DO you set the damn thing permanently?  Clearly evdev is not logging what it is doing in Xorg.0.log, so where is it logging?
Something seems to have changed since the wiki article was written.

  • [SOLVED] Setting default boot partition on Macbook Pro w/ no dual boot

I'm trying to install Arch on a new Macbook Pro 13", but I fear I've become somewhat confused by all the instructions in the wiki.
I have no interest in dual booting, so I left the mac's existing boot and recovery partitions alone and set up a new filesystem and boot partition. I installed rEFInd on the new boot partition and ran refind-install successfully. Installing Arch seemed to go perfectly as well.
My issue is that when I reboot the computer, it still tries to boot from the original boot partition, which fails because OS X is no longer installed. Does anyone have anyone idea how I boot from the rEFInd partition instead?
Last edited by whitebrice (2015-05-31 04:31:21)

Thanks for the quick reply. I tried deleting  the original boot partition, but I still had my problem. I ended up wiping all the existing partitions and trying again with gummiboot instead of rEFInd. It works now.

  • Default keyboard language and MacOS system  language

After I set default keyboard language to English it is automatically applied by macOS as a default language for the whole system. Is there a way to set English as a default language only for the keyboard, but at the same time set Ukrainian to be a default system language?

    Alex_Pros wrote:
I want keyboard to open with English as a default language
I assume you need to have both US and Ukrainian on the list at system preferences/keyboard/input sources, right?
Try removing Ukrainian from this list, restarting (which should give you US as default), and then adding Ukrainian again.
If that doesn't work, try going to system preferences/language & region and using the plus button to make some language below the line (for which nothing is localized) like Afrikaans the preferred language, with Ukrainian second.  This should keep US as the default keyboard and Ukrainian as the OS language.

  • What is the default screen brightness setting and keyboard backlight brightness default setting, and how to you go back to default?

What is the default screen brightness setting and keyboard backlight default setting? I just got a new Macbook Air and fiddled a lot with it, and now just want to know how to set the brightness levels back to default. Thanks everyone!

    Hey sberman,
I maxed out the screen brightness before I clicked on "restore defaults" in system preferences> energy saver (which has to do with battery, not exactly screen brightness) to see if the screen went back to a "normal" brightness level, but it didn't. I don't think it restored the brightness to default..

  • [SOLVED] Problems with setting default printer in Libreoffice

Everytime I print in Libreoffice it complains about me not having set the default printer. Where do I do that in Libreoffice or is it refferring to my setup in cups? Also in systemsettings under KDE4 when I try to manage my printer and I try to set it as default I get the following error:

bkadoctaj : this is actually exactly what I did as well. It works, although there is still a strange behaviour compared to under Ubuntu for instance :
    - The printer wasn't detected, I had to add it from the CUPS web interface
    - Libo complains about "no default printer" although I definitely set it as default in the aforementioned interface
(I use cups-usblp and splix-svn due to my specific hardware)
Hmm, weird... as far as I can tell LibO is using my CUPS-defined default printer as its default.  Thanks for the feedback - you made me glad that I wasn't posting something irrelevant lol.
Possibly a stupid question but your user is a member of the lp group, right?  I don't have anything set for "Allowed Users" in CUPS but you could also try adding your user there.  Curious to hear of a solution if you find one.

  • [Solved]switch my keyboard layout (also, how to unify clipboard?)

ok, i want to switch between us and us intl layout. After reading the Xorg page in the great Arch Wiki i maded
a file called "11-switchkb.conf" in my xorg folder and writed into it:
    Section "InputClass"
           Identifier                         "Keyboard Defaults"
           MatchIsKeyboard            "yes"
           Option                             "XkbLayout" "us, us intl"
           Option                             "XkbOptions" "grp:caps_toggle"
    EndSection
and i happyli restared my X and... My keyboard stopped working ( i had to brute shutdown my notebook holding power button)
I also tried 10-switchkb.conf and didnt worked.  What im doing wrong?
My second question i dont know how to explain it right... Im confused about copy and paste in linux, and it's seems weird for me,
sometimes it works sometimes it doesnt...
like when i highlight something in uzbl i can paste with shift+insert but
only while its highlighted. Sometimes i highlight what i want in vim and, even while its still highlighted, when i do shift+insert
in some other app it doesnt paste anything. and when i highlight in vim and paste in the same vim whith shift+insert it pastes
with a crazy indentation, but when i yank and paste it with 'p' it pastes correctly.
Is there a way to "unify" clipboard, in such a way i can copy-paste without trouble from any app to any other app?

  • Default Keyboard showing up when not enabled

    Afternoon all,
First off my iPhone is a 5C running iOS 8.0.2
I recently downloaded the Swiftkey keyboard and loved it enough to remove my default English keyboard on my iPhone. So I ran into a problem when I did this though. Whenever I switched out of my Messages app and switched back the Emoji keyboard would be set to default in place of swiftkey. I had already changed the order preference under settings to have swiftkey as the first keyboard but this kept happening, enough times where I just removed the Emoji keyboard all together so just swiftkey was left. Now the problem I am running into is that the default iOS keyboard is now popping up whenever I open the app, even though it is not set as one of my keyboards. I am able to get the custom keyboard back by closing the app and opening up again. What's the point of setting a default keyboard if the OS is just going to override it at the start anyway? Any idea if there is an easy fix or is this some bug that will have to get patched in the future?
    Thanks!

I think I may have put iPhoto in HHS trash. Could that be the problem?
I don't know what "HHS trash" is. If you put the iPhoto app into the trash on the Dock and emptied it, that would prevent you from opening iPhoto until it was reinstalled, of course, but it wouldn't affect your photos.
You didn't answer my question, though. Do you have backups? Is your computer actually 7 years old, and has it ever had the hard drive replaced?

  • Unable to set default program for .pdf

    CURRENT PROBLEM:
As show in print screen, when i attempt to set default program nth happens at all. The only way i can open any .pdf file now is by 1st opening adobe reader 9 and select the .pdf file manually
    INITIAL STAGE OF PROBLEM:
Problem started after upgrading to windows 7 from vista. Windows 7 is able to recognise adobe reader 8 as a valid default program since it is in windows.old. Thus the default for .pdf is adobe reader 8 (it was installed in vista).
Subsequently, installing adobe reader 9 isof  no use as it will be ignored and windows 7 will only continue to use adobe reader 8 as the default reader when i try to open a .pdf file, unless if i manually opened adobe reader 9 and selected a .pdf file manaually
However, I am unable to uninstall adobe reader 8 as the "program and feature" can only identify adobe reader 9 and does not think that adobe reader 8 exists.
    ATTEMPTs TO SOLVE:
Thus, I removed windows.old by using the disk cleanup. However, I am still unable to set adobe reader 9 as the default reader. Instead, .pdf are no longer accessible/"open-able" unless I 1st opened adobe reader 9 and then selected a .pdf manaually.
I've attempted reinstalling and restarting comps etc, they dun seem to help. I suspect the OS is now only able to recognise adobe reader 8 from windows.old as a valid program directory due to some registry issues since it was initally set as the default when i 1st upgraded the OS. Now that adobe reader 8 is removed, there might be some corrupted registry somewhere that needs to be set right again?
Really need help with this. Thanks a million.

Thanks guys for showing interest in helping.
As you guys can see, there's no adobe reader when u expand. Also, I already browsed the reader just in case too. Thus expanding doesnt help. =(
Also, I cant seem to find the "file type" tab in folder options
