[solved]skype - No protocol specified

http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Skype
I installed skype and under my own user it all works fine. However I tried to set it up with another user as shown in the wiki. When I launch skype with the new user I created for skype I get the following error.
No protocol specified
Not a big deal but I hope someone can help me fix it.

Yes, I add the new user to those groups.
edit;
Hmm, found this one -
https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=106295
Maybe I should just run skype with my own user, if I trust skype that is?
edit; Yup that's what ill do so ill make this as solved

    Hi,
    JD Said
You need to start xserver(vnc, X11 or some other) on OS, generally it get started like hostname:X.X (where X.X are digits like 0.0,1.0,2.0 etc etc).
Once it is started set this value in application context file located at $APPL_TOP/admin/. Variable is
<DISPLAY oa_var="s_display" osd="unix">HOSTNAME:X.X</DISPLAY>After changing the oa_var "s_display", You must run autoconfig to populate the DISPLAY value in all the scripts/files.

I am missing 2 important features of vim in archlinux(I know it is possible!)
1.I cannot press middlebutton(wheel) to paste something from selected text to vim editor.same happens with paste also.

    i don't know what happen but i can't use vmware ...
    thanks for your time..

Yes, yes, all of the usual.  I'm posting here so just in case someone knows what usually causes this:
    Caught signal 11
If it's plist files that could cause it or running programs, etc.  I'm not looking for any assistance with standard troubleshooting techniques but thanks for the thought.
Eventually I'll either purchase it (since it works on my iMac just fine) and open a case or give up and stay with 3.1.3 until a later version comes out.
    Again thanks for the assistance.

Finally got access to VMTN, posted this below:

  • [SOLVED] Vim warning "No protocol specified"

Ever since I upgraded my KDE Sc to 4.5.0 (KDEmod) I've been getting this warning when launching vim with sudo or as root (via doing su - first). As far as I understand from older threads dating back to 2008. It has to do with vim trying to connect to the X server. How can I fix this warning permanently and has it appeared just now?
Last edited by fettouhi (2010-08-29 07:29:22)

I finally found a solution to the problem:
I put the following line in my root users .bashrc script
    export XAUTHORITY=/home/<user>/.Xauthority
then I copied .Xauthority to root also, i.e.
    sudo cp ~/.Xauthority /root
and now the warning is gone.

  • [solved] Skype GTK3 theme with Gnome and Adwaita theme

    Hello,
Is it possible to have Skype using the Adwaita GTK3 theme on a 64Bit system?
I only get the following error:
Gtk-Message: Failed to load module "canberra-gtk-module"
(skype:8290): Gtk-WARNING **: Unable to locate theme engine in module_path: "adwaita",
Gtk-Message: Failed to load module "canberra-gtk-module"
    Regards
Last edited by orschiro (2012-12-02 10:02:16)

    I resolved the issue.
    1. Install Adwaita-X theme from AUR together with lib32-gtk2. You do not need to install lib32-gtk-engines.
    2. Create ~/.gtkrc-2.0 with gtk-theme-name = "Adwaita-X" in it.
    3. Add export GTK2_RC_FILES="/etc/gtk-2.0/gtkrc:$HOME/.gtkrc-2.0" to your ~/.xinitrc.
Skype should now use the Adwaita-X gtk2 port on a 64bit system. You do not need to change or set anything in qtconfig.
If you then launch skype you may still receive the following messages:
Gtk-Message: Failed to load module "canberra-gtk-module"
(skype:8290): Gtk-WARNING **: Unable to locate theme engine in module_path: "adwaita",
The first one just says that you need to install lib32-libcanberra-pulse from multilib repo.
As for the second warning I do not know how to get rid of that since I cannot reproduce why skype still looks for the adwaita theme although Adwaita-X was specified in the gtkrc file.
    Regards

UPDATE: Reinstalling lib32-alsa-lib and lib32-libxv made Skype to run.  I don't know what made these packages corrupted.
However, I ran into a new issue, and this is what I get now:
    [jiehan@tpx1c ~]$ skype

  • [SOLVED]Skype : error while loading libjpeg8

    Hi,
I have just installed archlinux (a few days ago) and all the softwares I need without any problem. Skype firstly worked fine but after a reboot, I couldn't run it. When I try to run it in terminal, I have the issue
/usr/lib32/skype/skype: error while loading shared libraries: libjpeg.so.8: wrong ELF class: ELFCLASS64
I know that Skype for linux is a 32bit app, so I thought I had to install the 32bit libjpeg8, but I can't find it in the AUR packages (here). Anyway, it is kinda strange that it worked the first time, isn't it ?

That looks like bad practise and bad idea, pray to $DEITY that whatever you did before doesn't come back to bite you in the future. Don't mess with files tracked by pacman unless you have a very good memory and you really know what you're doing.

  • [solved] skype not in repos?

Hi, I wanted to test skype in my 64 bit installation (with KDEmod, of course). Searched and found http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Skype. As per the wiki entry, though skype has only 32 bit binary, it can be run in 64 bit environment. In my system, community repo is already enabled. So I did a
    sudo pacman -S skype
    . But the result was
skype package not found, searching for group...
error: 'skype': not found in sync db
Funny thing is that, I am able to install skype-call-recorder even without installing skype.
What should be done to install skype now?

  • [SOLVED] Skype 2.2.0.25 crashes almost instantly on 64 bit

Just updated to the new Skype beta (64 bit, multilib) and it crashes constantly. I can run it but after a few moments running it crashes/closes.

I upgraded yesterday to multilib/skype 2.2.0.25-1 on a fully up-to-date 64 bits system. When restarting skype this morning, the login window works like normal but it crashes when the skype main window opens. I would be surprised if it has to do with the sound system.
Looking at /var/log/messages.log I notice this message:
Apr 12 09:44:12 localhost kernel: process `skype' is using obsolete setsockopt SO_BSDCOMPAT
Downgraded to package skype (2.2.0.25-1 => 2.1.0.81-5.1) and that works fine for now (as it did before).
The error message quoted above is apparently not related to the newer version: it's also in messages.log when I restart my system and start skype 2.1.0.81-5.1, and has been written into messages.log since summer last year when I started using this laptop (ASUS UL30A)
