[solved] Strange Audio Issue

I am experiencing a strange audio issue with my Intel-HDA ICH7:
# lspci -v
00:1b.0 Class 0403: Intel Corporation 82801G (ICH7 Family) High Definition Audio Controller (rev 01)
Subsystem: Hewlett-Packard Company Unknown device 30a5
Flags: bus master, fast devsel, latency 0, IRQ 22
Memory at d2400000 (64-bit, non-prefetchable) [size=16K]
Capabilities: <access>
when I installed Arch linux the first time a mounth ago on this computer, I had a sound problem that was solved in a very strange way.
Everything worked fine until a week or so (I believe from Alsa 1.0.12). Now sometimes sound works and sometimes it doesn't. For example sometime I boot the computer and have no sound, then I reboot it without doing anything, and then sound works.
I have tried messing with the modprobe.conf:
# /etc/modprobe.conf (for v2.6 kernels)
# --- BEGIN: Generated by ALSACONF, do not edit. ---
# --- ALSACONF version 1.0.11 ---
#alias snd-card-0 snd-hda-intel
#alias sound-slot-0 snd-hda-intel
# --- END: Generated by ALSACONF, do not edit. ---
#options snd-hda-intel model=F1734
options snd-hda-intel model=z71v
options snd-hda-intel position_fix=1
but it was useless. If I put back the modules in rc.conf everything is worse: sound doesn't work at all.
A diff between lsmod in a "working boot" and a "without sound boot" showed that the same modules where in kernel memory.
A diff between dmesg showed this difference:
< hda_intel: azx_get_response timeout, switching to single_cmd mode...
was present in the not working boot. This line is absent in a working boot dmesg.
The only way to make the sound card working everytime is to remove the snd* modules load from the boot sequence and load the modules "by hand" after the login.
Any ideas?
PS : If something is unclear due to my poor English please tell my and I'll try to explain it better.

phrakture wrote:snd-hda-intel is screwed up - on my thinkpad I had to go into the bios and enable the modem for sound to work.  Oddly enough, the modem was off by default.
Also, mine has no PCM listed, I need to use "front" as my PCM level... not to mention the UI is way off with 'tpb' (if you have a thinkpad)
Yes it's not an Arch Linux related problem: I had problems with Debian (Etch and Sid based distros like ubuntu) too (but there I had no modprobe issue on the init sequence. Maybe is a problem of shared IRQs, but I have to study the existing documentation as I am a newbie). The difference is that Arch is simple enought for me to try something like modprobing "by hand" in the init sequence. PCM seems to work, however the volume is very low and I have found no way to make the mic work. Under Mepis I was able to make it work only if I plugged it in windows xp and then reboot into Linux. But I can't try it with Arch as I have erased the windows partition...
I will try the new kernel, study the documentation and then report. Hoping this will be usefull to others too.

  • [SOLVED] .mkv audio issues after updating x264, ffmpeg and mplayer

Since I updated to x264-20100410-1, ffmpeg-22837-2 and mplayer-31029-1 the audio of random mkv files is having issues. While it seems to be in sync with the video it sounds as if it was slowed down.
The problem was solved after downgrading back to the previous versions with:
    pacman -U /var/cache/pacman/pkg/x264-20100312-1-i686.pkg.tar.xz
    /var/cache/pacman/pkg/ffmpeg-22511-1-i686.pkg.tar.xz
    /var/cache/pacman/pkg/mplayer-30886-1-i686.pkg.tar.xz
I can't pinpoint the precise culprit using the binary packages and have no time right now to recompile them and track the problem individually, sorry.

I reinstalled the new versions and tried again but the problem seems to be independent of the -vo (or -ao) drv. I even tried null as -vo but the sound is still distorted. The video plays fine.

  • Strange Audio issue on Satellite L650/0FN

I bought a L650/0FN almost twelve months ago and have had trouble with an intermittent audio "buzz" in all audio file types and sources. The problem is now worse in that the "buzz" now appears to blank the screen and freeze the computer with the only way of shutting down being to pull the battery.
I found the following in a forum thread [http://forums.computers.toshiba-europe.com/forums/thread.jspa?messageID=235672&#235672] and thought it might provide a solution, but when i go to the intel download page the description for this driver is desktop chipsets and I dont find anything on my machine similar to Rapid Storage Technology Drivers so this may be a dead end. This driver seemed to fix a similar problem in the 0ED.

I investigated a litte bit and maybe you could solve this issue updating the iRST (Intel Rapid Storage Technology Driver) V10.1.0.1008.
But before you would do this, you should backup the data from the HDD.
I searched a little bit and the necessary driver V10.1.0.1008.or higher is available for download directly on the INTEL website under following link: http://downloadmirror.intel.com/19607/a08/iata_cd.exe "
Any thoughts or advice would be much appreciated. Thanks

    Thanks As***,
By "Factory settings" do you mean the bios settings that came with the computer? To my knowledge those settings are all the same as when I bought the laptop. I haven't changed anything other than loading a few programs ie Word and Photoshop. (Im not sure how to check the bios settings on this machine (?)).
I Don't think i have experienced the "buzz" with headphones plugged in, but again, this is an intermittent problem.
I rang the toshiba service line but the fellow I spoke to wasn't much help unfortunately.
Sorry if my description wasnt very clear I'll try to expand on the problem:
The problem began with what can best be described as a slight audio delay or glitch, sounding like a loud "buzz" or "Brrrrrrr" that would last only a few seconds and replace the sound content. This would occur intermittently and unpredictably when playing various forms of audio (including movies and windows start up). At first I wasn't to bothered but the duration of the "buzz" has grown and then a few days ago it grew so bad the it seemed to kill the laptop screen, as it went blank and no command keys could stop it and thats when I had to pull the battery .
Im just getting a bit nervous as my warranty expires soon.

  • [Solved] Strange sound issue

I finally got around to trying out Arch, and I'm having a strange issue with sound. When I try to play videos off the Internet as my normal (non-root) user, the video plays, but no sound comes out of the speakers. If I log in as root and try to play the same video, the sound works perfectly. I have not experienced this on any other distros.
Since I am a strict follower of the "don't run as root" rule, I'd like to know if there are any settings/config files I can check to see what the issue may be.
    Additional details:
-Using alsa, it has always worked perfectly for me in the past
    -alsamixer works as root
    -alsamixer as normal users says:
cannot open mixer: No such file or directory
-lspci entry for my sound device:
00:1b.0 Audio device: Intel Corporation 82801I (ICH9 Family) HD Audio Controller (rev 03)
-I have already seen the Alsa setup page on the wiki and added the blacklist line to modprobe.conf, but there is no "external amplifier" listed in alsamixer
    -alsaconf seems non-existent
-I have already tried "modprobe -rv snd-hda-intel && sleep 5 && modprobe snd-hda-intel" as root
EDIT: I have not yet tried playing any local videos or sound files, though I can try this later when I have some extra time.

    I am now ;-)
I've got sound now that I am. I'm used to having the distro installer setting up my default account for me. Although I should know to check the groups, since I have had to setup custom users before ;-)
    Thanks, 6ng4n.

  • [SOLVED] Strange character issue...

I'm using Openbox, and sometimes (often) the text will mess up and start showing random characters in place of the characters that's supposed to be there.  I kill X and start it up again, and it's fixed until it happens again.  It usually happens after doing some package management and other system-related things, but a couple of times it's done it during a session where I didn't do any of those things.  This only happens in X/Openbox.
I figured it was a locale problem, so I checked all of my locale settings multiple times and everything appears correct.  Then I figured it was maybe a key mapping problem, so I checked that KEYMAP was set to us, and it is.
I have en_US.UTF-8 UTF-8 and ja_JP.UTF-8 UTF-8 enabled, and en_US.UTF-8 is my default...I use Terminus as my font for everything.  Any help with this is appreciated since I've spent two days trying to figure it out already and I just want to move on.
Here's an example...Sometimes there'll be huge characters and Japanese kanji thrown in there.

No. Xorg 1.13.04 does not work well with nvidia drivers.
This problem is dealt with in several topics:
    https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=153138
    https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=152899
    https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=152837
Only "solution" so far: Downgrading xorg.
1.13.03 might be enough according to user corion's post).
Alright...Thanks for the info.  I guess I was completely wrong in how I was thinking of the problem.  So, am I able to just downgrade the xorg-server package to solve the issue, or am I going to have to downgrade other related packages such as xorg-server-common?

  • Strange audio issue when running render queue via script.

The issue I'm having with AE is odd, and I'm hoping someone may be able to shed light on the matter.  I have a very simple composition that, when I render out using the GUI, everything works as expected.  The video renders fine, the audio renders fine, etc.  However, when I invoke a script that runs the .aep file, sets the render queue for the composition in question, and then renders it, only the video comes through, but no audio.  There is nothing in my script prior to the setting up of the render queue that alters any audio layers (i.e. no code shutting off audio, etc.)  Has anybody ever encountered this?  The audio file is a .wav in 44.1KHz, 16bit, stereo, and will try other formats to see if the problem might with the file itself?  Although, I don't see how that would be the case if it is rendering just fine via the GUI.
Any help you can offer for troubleshooting would be great!  Thanks for your help and time!

Thanks for your suggestion.  It wasn't the output module.  I created a custom template for it and ensured the audio was checked.  It was an odd fix.  I deleted the audio layer, then dragged it back to the timline.  Then, it worked.  Cost me like two hours of work for that, and I should have checked it earlier.  But I still don't know why the original wasn't working.

  • Strange Audio Issue

I swear I'm not making this up.
When I listen to a track on my iPhone, (in iPod) using the built in speakers or plug in speakers or even plugged into my car stereo, the audio is fine.
    But...
If I plug in headphones, (and yes I've tried 4 different brands, two were brand new) I get a rhythmic 'pop' in the right channel and I lose all midrange sound. Most songs sound like they're muffled and audiobooks either sound like their underwater or high pitched burbling brooks.
I have tried multiple tracks, even ripping songs from CDs at different kps rates.
I've restored and re-booted the iPhone three times and tried 3.1.2 and 3.1.3.
And the worst of it was that it was working fine Wednesday (today is Sun).

as another piece of info...when i have my output set to my Matrox MX02 and listen through the monitor,  this issue goes away and all is on. also, when i turn the monitor off completely, so video output is set to none, it is also just fine. now, i never had this issue when i had a firewire set up. worked great on the timeline as i could play the video, see it play in the monitor and use my computer speakers for editing sound.

  • New MSI Z97 Gaming 3 - very strange audio issues

    (sorry for the long post)
Hi, I recently bought some computer parts from Newegg and built my first gaming pc yesterday, but when everything was finished setting up I noticed a major issue with the audio. Both the headphone jack on the motherboard and the headphone jack from the front panel connector aren't working correctly.
If I plug in my headphones into the motherboard jack, the audio level is REALLY low. Like, even if I turn up the volume to 100% it sounds like it's only at 10%. I looked through the volume settings for the headphones and didn't notice anything wrong. Then I tried updating my drivers with the cd and ran the live update utility, but nothing changed. Also, the audio will sometimes make distorted/static sounds when the music itself is loud, yet I can still barely hear the music.
The front panel jack is even worse! The sound is much more distorted/static-y when I plug in my headphones there.
I know it's not my headphones fault because they work fine on my laptop. Even if I plug in a different pair, I still get the same low volume and static.
I know the front panel issue is not because of the case. If I put the motherboard in an old HP case and plug in my headphones into the front panel on this case, same issue. (I know the old case normally works fine).
I even tried running a linux live usb in case it was something wrong with Windows. It still had the same issues.
    My specs:
    MSI Z97 Gaming 3 ATX LGA1150
    Intel Core i5-4590
    MSI GeForce GTX 970
    Corsair Vengeance Pro 8GB
    WD Blue 1TB
    XFX XTR Series 550W
    Windows 8.1 Pro
I would really appreciate some help. It seems like I've tried everything.

    Hi
What is the BIOS version your board currently has?
Try without graphics card and with single RAM stick.
You could also try out of the case on non conductive surface like wooden table or motherboard box, and see if it works then. Might be something in either cases shortening the board.

The issue appears when clicking on a menu item from the top of chrome, and if there is a list then the blue highlighting of each item as the cursor moves down only highlights every second item instead of every item as normal.
I have had this happen in the past but was unsure which package was the culprit.  I don't know from the above list which package update may have been responsible, but since the same effect has been seen on 4 different machines I presume it is likely kdebase-workspace?  This is with KDE as the desktop environment, and with all packages up to date.  Has anyone else seen this issue and if so is there a workaround or is it a known bug.  It is an odd one to google for but presumably I am not the only one who has seen this issue.  The version of chrome is chrome stable google-chrome 36.0.1985.125-1
    Thanks.

I have no idea what the root cause is but if you turn off compositing (Alt+Shift+F12), it'll stop. You can use the Window Rules KCM to make a rule that'll automatically stop/start compositing when Chromium is started. Sadly, this is a poor workaround as you lose all the niceties that compositing brings You can also change KWin's render mode from OpenGL to Raster but that's too intrusive for me - I'd rather just disable compositing as a whole. I'm using a laptop with an HD4000 set to use the default SNA acceleration.

  • [Solved]Strange piping issue..

Sometimes when I try piping commands, I simply get a "command not found" even though the commands are correct for sure.
The commands will work when I remove the space after the pipe... It's really annoying and it has happened to me on different distributions, so it's not just Arch. I managed to get a fantastic example just now and this time I thought to myself "This time, I'll HAVE to figure this out!!!"
So, see this example below. I even got an error message, which I think hasn't happened before.
    ~$ man bash | wc -l
    4892
    ~$ man mplayer | wc -l
    bash: wc: command not found
Error executing formatting or display command.
    System command (cd "/usr/share/man" && (echo ".pl 11i"; /bin/cat '/usr/share/man/man1/mplayer.1') | /usr/bin/gtbl | /usr/bin/nroff -mandoc -c | /bin/less -is) exited with status 36096.
    No manual entry for mplayer
    ~$ man mplayer |wc -l
    8086
So, what's this? It isn't a simple one-time issue, if I try to repeat the command it fails every time but when I remove the space it works. I don't know if the error message is related to this issue though, because this is the first time it has shown itself, even though I've stumbled across this issue many times.

  • [SOLVED] Strange graphical issues in Chromium

I haven't tested this in any other browsers, so I'm not sure what the root cause of the problem is.
    Symptom: http://i.imgur.com/88ek7BU.png
It only happens sometimes, but images (and sometimes links etc) are mangled like this ad. For links, it's sometimes possible to mouse over it and fix it (it gets a refresh when it has to draw the underline or something, I guess), but this ad was not fixable (not that I cared about seeing an ad, but the issue as a whole is quite irritating).
Are there plugins which improve image rendering and fix this? Is it a driver issue? What can I do and/or what info do you need from me so that this issue is resolved?
    Last edited by 2mac (2014-01-06 15:17:46)

I get things like that too.
What environment are you using? (OpenBox, Kde, i3, Gnome?)
What is your video hardware / Driver.   I see these on Intel Graphics.
Are you using a compositor?  Which one? I seemed to see this more with xcompmgr than I do with Compton.  I seem to see this more with OpenBox and less with i3
Edit:  Also, have you messed with any of the rendering flags in Chromium, or are you using the default settings.  Do not force hardware rendering.  You might also (as an experiment) tell Chrome not to do hardware rendering.

So this is a strange situation, and I'll try to explain in depth so that someone might be able to suggest a solution. As reference, I have an iPhone 5 that I purchased in late-February. I've had every other model of iPhone except for the first iPhone, so I am pretty familiar with the device. I used to be on AT&T, and switched to Verizon when I upgraded to the iPhone 5.
Two days ago, I was on a six hour road-trip, and I'd been playing my music like normal through my car's auxillary cable. After stopping for lunch, I went to plug my music again, but once the music started to play, I realized that only the drums were playing at normal levels while the vocals were very, very soft. I switched through a few different songs, and realized that all the songs were being played at different levels; sometimes the backup vocals were normal levels while the instrumentation and lead vocals were quiet, or vice versa. I decided to plug my iPhone in to charge, and when I did this, the audio levels were all normal. However, the iPhone was NOT charging. I removed the charger, and the audio went back to being weak and distorted. I went back and forth at this for a bit, trying to figure out what was going on.
Since then and after some testing, I realize that my iPhone will now only charge anywhere EXCEPT in the car charger (I simply use my USB cable that came with my iPhone and plug it into the power adapter I have in the car). This morning, I tested the audio in my home speaker system, and I had the same audio issues. Only half the song's tracks would be at normal audio levels, while the other half would be at a very quiet, almost nonexistent level. I tried plugging my charger into the phone to see if that'd make a difference, but instead of the audio going back to normal like it does in the car, the music stopped and there was just crackling and very noisy distortion sounds.
I'm super confused and not sure what to do. This has never happened to me with any of my iPhones. I am updating my software right now, and am hoping that that may help somehow. Otherwise, I'm at a loss. Any suggestions as to what I should do would be greatly appreciated!

Do the new iMacs have digital audio out through the headphone jack?
    Yes.

  • HP Slate 21 audio issue after KitKat update and reset

I have upgraded my HP Slate 21 from JB to KK. Now the sound quality is very bad!
I came directly from xxx.11 kernel and made factory reset but didn't get a good result. Please how can I fix this tremendous issue?

    Hey @PauloTxR ,
    Welcome to the HP forums.
I understand you're experiencing issues with sound quality on your Slate 21 PC.
Please review the following thread: HP Slate 21 Kit Kat OTA Update Fix for Audio Quality and LAN Connectivity.
This fix will resolve audio issues of a software nature resulting in the KitKat update. If your issue persists after applying the specific update mentioned in this thread and have done a factory reset, the issue is likely hardware related and not the result of the KitKat update.
If you have done the above and continue to have problems please call our technical support at 800-474-6836. If you live outside the US/Canada Region, please click the following link to get the support number for your region: Phone Assist Worldwide.

  • [SOLVED] HDMI Audio In VLC Garbled/Inaudible WIth Intel Audio

I thought I understood the difference between cards, devices, and pcm devices, but I guess I don't.
I've set up my system to recognize the Analog Card as the default (card 0), and the HDMI Card as Card 1 via Set The Default Sound Card .  My alsa-base.conf:

WIth the above configuration, VLC outputs to PC speakers fine using the "Analog Default Audio Device" (However, if it matters, switching to "Analog Front Speakers" is a garbled mess).  Selecting HDMI0 and HDMI2 in VLC produces no output.  Selecting HDMI1 in VLC is the same garbled mess.  However, running this command from Archwiki HDMI Output produces totally clear audio via HDMI:
    aplay -D plughw:1,7 /usr/share/sounds/alsa/Front_Center.wav
The list of audio devices that VLC "sees" as selectable for audio output mirrors the PCM devices I see with aplay -L.  The three HDMI audio devices in aplay -L each list as their devices 0, 1, and 2 for HDMI0, HDMI1, and HDMI2 respectively.  Conceptually, it seems to me like my HDMI PCM devices are messed up.  Shouldn't HDMI1, at least, be paired with Device 7, since the command directly above works with device 7?  If I understand things correctly, my asoundrc currently overrides cards , however, when I try to get it to override pcm devices, with the following, no hdmi devices are visible in VLC:
    pcm.!hdmi {
    type plughw
    card HDMI
    device 7
There must be something I am not understanding - would appreciate any help or insights.

Okay nevermind...sort of.  It occurred to me to try the same alsa wav test file in VLC through HDMI.  It plays clearly with HDMI1 device.  So, my understanding of ALSA PCM devices is still totally messed up, but I have discovered my problem is a different one:
VLC plays mp3/mp4/mkv files garbled through HDMI, but clearly through PC Speakers.
Now I will try and solve this new problem myself.  Marking SOLVED since original issue was non-issue...can I delete thread so as not to waste everyone's time?

  • Pioneer FH-8000BT Car Radio & iPhone OS 3.1/3.1.2 Bluetooth Audio Issue

I have a Pioneer FH-8000BT Car Deck that has Bluetooth (http://bit.ly/4c7ofq).
I have an iPhone 3GS 32GB unit that came with iPhone OS 3.0 on it with Firmware 04.26.08.
I upgraded to iPhone OS 3.01 when it came out and all was fine (the baseband was unchanged)
I upgraded to iPhone OS 3.1 while keeping Baseband at 04.26.08 using methods that shouldn't be discussed, and while the upgrade went perfectly fine, my audio between the deck and the phone now gets garbled for both me and the person on the other end. The audio compression issue occurs every 30 seconds - 2 minutes and lasts for about 5 -15 seconds and repeats itself during the call. Kind of annoying right? You bet! I have to put the phone on speakerphone to talk to someone. I won’t be able to do that much longer because as of October 26th that will be against the law here in Ontario. All devices in the car must be hands free.
Recently, I upgraded to iPhone OS 3.1.2 and upgraded the Firmware to 05.11.07 to see if it would make a difference and it made no difference - I still had BT compression issues.
I have tried with another iPhone (a 3G model) running 3.0 -> No problems with BT audio compression there...
I've even swapped out the deck with another one - but I have yet to attempt a 3.1 or higher OS.
Pioneer told me that they were hearing reports about this deck with the iPhone, but they never heard about the technical details I gave them. No word about a firmware upgrade, or a fix for this from them.
I've had my phone swapped out at the Apple Store here in Toronto, and I had OS 3.0 on it which I don't think I'll be upgrading at this point because of the audio issues. So, I am stuck at OS 3.0. Unfortunately some Apps I use are now becoming a minimum requirement of OS 3.1 - par for the course I guess?
I'm very curious what changed in OS 3.1 since 3.0/3.0.1 for the bluetooth...
    Does anyone know?
Just wondering if anyone else out there has this deck and has a problem?

You can get the Bluetooth Audio streaming working? I can't get that to sync up properly. sigh ...
I called Apple and they documented everything for me ... Case # 140385552
If you can do a test call for me that would be amazing! Just keep talking ... you should be able to hear the audio compression problem (and so should the person you're talking to) ...
Glad to hear there's someone out there who has the same deck as I do.
Also find out if your callers hear your alternator whine when you drive ---
I get that problem too but that's wiring / deck related. A ferrite core should solve it but I can't be bothered at the moment.
You using the usb cable at all or using bluetooth to stream?
I'm using the USB cable. I can get the audio to pause and play using USB cable.
Again, I'm unsuccessful with the BT Audio Streaming part.
