[solved, this time for good] openvpn dns issue

i guys! i'm having some trouble connecting to the university vpn.
i installed and configured openpvn as said here in the wiki https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/OpenVPN
i installed openresolv too and it seems to work.
the configuration file provided by the school is ok and it works well with windows openvpn-gui.
the problem lies in the script for openresolv given in the wiki. it doesn't work for me... these are the output of openvpn at the point it loads it:

you can find the openresolve script at the bottom of the openvpn article in the wiki.
should i edit it someway?? what about that "foreign_option"? i don't get it
if i try to connect to the vpn avoiding the script it works, i can connect to the ssh servers of the school, but i can't browse the internet, as the dns aren't set properly.

well, i had the occasion to test this thoroughly, connecting to the school wifi, and still it doesn't work.  the internet browser just shows the not-so-welcome page of the school intranet. openvpn reports no errors or anything. ssh works. it worked connecting from home..
i connect to the network via wifi, using wicd and a dhcp setup. the dns in resolv.conf are changed accordingly when i connect. they are NOT changed again when i connect to the vpn. is that right?
i cant figure why it worked from home (and i'm sure i was in the vpn)..
any hints?
EDIT: it works disabling the openresolv script. the dns in resolv.conf are always the same!! damn this is nonsense!

  • How can S/PDIF just stop working? [Solved! this time for good!]

I have S/PDIF cable as my main output from my computer to my receiver, and it worked fine, up until now.
Earlier today it still worked but I turned my computer off and after a while on again, and then it just didn't work.
I tried to troubleshoot the problem, and noticed that my sound starts working if I mute the S/PDIF (I do have another cable coaxial?) my sound comes back.
After not much luck trying to find a solution. I did check the Wiki page on ALSA and read the part on how to get S/PDIF working...
    It didn't work.
Anyway I lost patience and removed alsa-utils and it worked for a while and now it doesn't work again.
I though I'll just ask why would this happen but given it again doesn't work the real question is why is this (keep) happening?
Last edited by Primoz (2010-08-23 19:02:46)

To keep anyone that's interested up-to-date...
Doing the same as previoulsy; meaning that I would just reinstall alsa-utils, use alsa-ctl store and it would magically work; didn't work.
Now I'm starting to doubt that it worked first time round, but it did. Becuase I did tests to see if it really works.
I was muting S/PDIF on and off and quality of sound changed instead of stop working.
I don't know why it worked previously, I doubt it was the reinstalling of alsa-utils.
I have no idea what it actually was the reason.
    I'll do more research.

Reboot the machine holding Command and r keys down, you'll boot into Lion Recovery Partition
In there will be Disk Utility, use that to select your Lion OS X Partition and Repair Permissions.
After that is done reboot the machine and see if you can log in.
If not repeat the above steps to get into Lion Recovery, get online and reinstall Lion again, it will overwrite the installed version and hopefully after that it wil work.
    Reboot and try again.
If not follow my steps to create a Snow Leopard Data Recovery drive, then option boot from it and grab a copy of your files off the machine.
Then reinstall all your programs onto the external drive like setting up a new machine, then use Disk Utility to erase the entire internal boot drive (select the drive media on the far left, not the partiton slightly indented) format Option: GUID , 1 partition OS X Extended and then use Carbon Copy Cloner to clone the external to the newly formatted internal drive. Once that is finished reboot and disconnect the external drive.
Once you go that, boot into Snow Leopard and update to 10.6.8, use the AppStore and option click on Purchases and download Lion again and install.
Lots of work, but there is no Lion disks.

  • I will personally donate to whoever solves this problem for me

Long story short, I like many of the others have a shot Iphone 5 now due to the 7.1 upgrade.
My wifi is so weak that it will only  pick up signals if I literally lay it on top fo the router. The back of the device heats up and my battery is draining like crazy. This is completely insane.
I have tried every single trick in the book short of throwing it out the window. Restart, and turn wifi on/off and backup and restore from itunes on mutliplel computers and over the icloud and hard reset and soft reset and petting it and pleading with it to please work. This is very very frustrating. Unfortunately I'm located in Kurdistan right now on business so lack of an iStore isn't helping either.
Again its an unlocked GSM Iphone. My only option is downgrading. While I have downloaded previous firmware, unfortunately itunes gives me an error when trying to downgrade (shift and then choose the firmware). Yes I have tried going to host file to delete the apple link, no I'am unable to find the apple link on MULTIPLE devices.
Please someone help me because Apple is not doing anything about this apparently. I will personally donate to whoever helps me solve this, I'm guessing if I can successfully downgrade back to 7.04 or 7.06 that'd be my best bet (I have the firmware ready, just Itunes not allowing me).
    Thanks in advance

I had the battery problem and it was due to a software glitch (which might also effect the WiFi). This is what I did to fix the battery problem:
Turn off both location services and background app refresh, let the battery completely discharge to the point where the phone turns itself off. Recharge the battery completely, then turn both location services and background app refresh back on.
I think the battery discharging to the point where the phone shuts down resets some aspects of the phone. It couldn't hurt to try.

Well, after looking at the text your compiler so helpfully gave you:
    symbol : method toString (char)
    location: class java.lang.Character
g2.drawString(Character.toString(ch), xPos, yPos); And consulting the API docs (which I Strongly Suggest you read) for the java.lang.Character class (a clue I found in the above text) I see absolutely no static method called "toString" that takes a char. Thus, it is my esteemed opinion, that there is no static method with a signature of toString(char) in the Character class, and your attempt to use it on line 96 of your RandomLetterApplet.java file is causing this error.
    Is that solved?

    Hello everybody,
I've got the following question in one of the mock tests for Java certification exams.

  • It's time for another G5 startup issue thread!

    Folks -
I'd like to think that I'm not entirely mac-tarded, but I figured that I would see if anyone out there had seen this before I take Mr. G5 in for repair.
I have a Power Mac G5 DP 2.7GHz, with 2GB of RAM. It WAS running OS 10.4.9. At my place of business, it was unplugged and set aside, with a new Mac Pro taking its place. Today, I plugged it with the intent of erasing and reinstalling everything. When the computer is plugged in, the front LED comes on and stays solidly lit. The system does not respond when the power button is pressed. I've tried different power cables, and I've also removed all but 512MB of the RAM, and the same thing happens. I've reseated the video card, still no go. I've reset the PMU and, again, nothing. Am I looking at a busted power supply?

Ditto Tom's remarks,. You should replace the battery before worrying about anything else.

  • This time for CQ6

    I can't wait for Adobe CQ6! CQ5 is historical!

Eh,Reply to me! Will that appear in 2013?

  • This time for Adobe Font Folio 12

Will Font Folio 12 released? New features? More Fonts? Can't wait!

    What is your point?
Adobe does not announce vaporware. If and when we are ready to release a new version of Font Folio, we will announce the product, but certainly not until then.

  • Possible DNS issue with AirPort Express basestation?

    Hi all -
Up until recently my Airport Express has been working great. This past weekend I started noticing that website browsing became slow, and some websites would not come up at all (e.g. popular sites like wordpress.org).
Otherwise my internet connection works fine (email works, browsing for the most part is normal for all computers on the network, pc and mac).
I read that this could be a possible DNS issue. I unplugged the AE basestation and plugged my Powerbook directly into my cable modem and was able to get to all websites that I couldn't get to while using the AE. That, and browsing was a heck of a lot faster (it seemed).
Can anyone help me out and point me to a specific setting on the AE that I can toggle, correct, whatever, to solve this (possible) DNS issue?
    Thanks!
    Jeff

Dear Henry, Thanks for your reply, and we are sorry for having intruded upon the wrong thread with our troubles. Perhaps you could point us to the most pertinent thread. Further pushing credulity Might you assist us further?... We have checked every floor in the building and no new equip has been added, though I can't speculate on the 'hood at large. We added a Time Capsule to the mix hoping that might bring back some stability and speed, but results aren't very promising so far. perhaps you might point us to a resource for professional help, or web sites that may help us define and implement something beyond the ad hoc system we have currently. We have read through the Apple docs regarding Designing Networks, and though informative they don't necessarily explain the nuances / consequences of different configurations, for instance, that WDS will adversely affect net speed. Thanks in advance for your input (should you wish to assist). If you are so inclined I can provide the snap shot of our list of hardware. And again apologies if we are in the wrong place.

  • Linksys WRTP54G DNS issue

I have reviewed and tried HOURS of suggestions on this site regarding WI-FI DNS issue ie. "can't find the server" message. This appears to be Router model problem/resolution. Does anyone know the specific fix to get the ITouch to work with an linksys WRTP54G Router. General comments and fixes are not needed, only the one specific for this router. Thanks.

Don't give up on the iPod Touch. It's one of the most remarkable devices ever invented.
Your router routes IP traffic. That's all you need. Your iPod should work with any router. Somewhere, there a configuration setting that is not right.
There is one other possibility, and that's that your ISP is doing something funny like using a proxy server. Unlikely but possible.
You need to attack this systematically. Like has been suggested, narrow down if it is a connectivity or a DNS issue. If you can get to a site by its IP address, then you have a DNS issue. If you cannot, then it is something set wrong elsewhere.
    Possibilities:
    - MAC filtering (you have ruled this out)
    - Encryption (you have ruled this out)
    - Is your router not giving out enough IP addresses? If you set the limit to 2 and you have 3 computers, someone will lose out.
    - Is your router correctly picking up its settings from your ISP (DHCP), or have you hardcoded some or all of it? Does your (working) PC have some of the missing bits hardcoded - for example, if your router doesn't have its DNS settings, but your IP settings on the PC have them hardcoded, the PC will work, but the iPod won't - unless of course you hard code them on the iPod as well
    - Have you inadvertently coded something into your router like a static route, a filter, , or configured a DMZ that is conflicting with the DHCP address that your iPod is getting?
    - Have you (or someone in your house) configured some access restrictions on the router, maybe for another PC in the house, like a child's PC?
If all of this is confusing, or something is really screwed up, you could always start form scratch, as if you just bought the router. There is a way to reset it to factory defaults (I believe holding the hidden reset button for a long time), then set it up correctly for your ISP again, and it should work for all computers, iPods, etc.
There is always the possibility that the Vonage firmware is somehow interfering. Do you use the Vonage features? You could always put in a more standard firmware.
Bottom line, it is far more likely that this is a setting on your router than the fault of the iPod. The iPod is just an every day IP device, and should work with just about everything. Do not give up on the iPod.
