[SOLVED]USB support in virtualbox guest OS

I have a Windows 7 64 bit guest in virtualbox
[inxs ~ ]$ paclocs virtualbox
local/virtualbox 4.0.8-4
Powerful x86 virtualization for enterprise as well as home use
local/virtualbox-ext-oracle 4.0.8-1
Oracle VM VirtualBox Extension Pack
[inxs ~ ]$
I also have the latest guest additions installed. I have been trying to get access to my iPod, so I can transfer some songs without having to boot into my Windows (the dual boot one). gtkpod does not recognize my iPod for some reason - but that's for another thread.
In any case, I found that not only the iPod, but I cannot access any usb flash drives either. I tried the filters, but that didn't work. So here's what I have tried so far :
I tried this post  and this thread : https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=50239 but neither option work for me.
This thread on virtualbox forums is the same problem I have but alas they don't have any solution.
And finally this doesnt help either
They are all basically minor variations of the same solution.
Here are my details:
[inxs ~ ]$ cat /proc/bus/usb/devices
T: Bus=01 Lev=01 Prnt=01 Port=03 Cnt=01 Dev#= 3 Spd=480 MxCh= 0

[inxs ~ ]$ groups
lp wheel video audio optical storage power users vboxusers
[inxs ~ ]$
So as you can see the usb drive is on bus 01, device 03, and ls of that device shows that it belongs to vboxusers group and my user belongs to that group
[inxs ~ ]$ grep vboxusers /etc/group
vboxusers:x:108:inxs
[inxs ~ ]$
So the devgid is 108, but none of the lines suggested in the linked threads in fstab work for me
I do not have a group called usb, but I have one called usbmux -- Is that the devgid that I have to use?My user does not belong to that group.
[inxs ~ ]$ grep usb /etc/group
usbmux:x:140:

ewaller wrote:You said USB drives.  Have you tried any other classes of USB devices?
I am not sure what exactly you mean by classes, but I tried 2 different usb keys, an iPod and a portable usb HDD and a Logitech webcam
ewaller wrote:Do the devices show up in the VB USB device menu ?
Are they enabled or grayed?
Yes they do show up in the VB USB device menu and they are all enabled. When I select them to allow the guest to access them, Windows 7 tried to install the driver, but then invariably fails no matter how many times I try.

Nope. See above.

You can install an older version of virtualbox-guest-utils.
You can wait for catalyst to support xorg-server 1.17 and install virtualbox-guest-utils only then.
You can change graphics drivers to the FLOSS ones and install xorg-server 1.17 and virtualbox-guest-utils.

  • [SOLVED] Virtualbox and USB Support

I use Virtualbox quite regularly for work and school. I have Windows installed within Virtualbox, and I use it whenever school or work requires. However, USB support has never worked for me (even with the fstab addition) and I thought maybe I'll spend some time to figure this out.
Basically, I may want to do things like insert a flash drive and make it available to the VM, or even sometimes an MP3 player or even my PSP. Unfortunately, it doesn't seem to work. There USB filters, but often times the device I want is greyed out, and can't be selected. When I am able to select a device to create a filter, it doesn't do anything. I did check the Wiki already.
Maybe I'm missing something? Or is USB support in Virtualbox just that bad? I was hoping there would be some sort of way I can dedicate a USB port to Virtualbox, and make it exclusive. I think VMWare can do that but I'm not sure that Virtualbox can.

I hope it's ok to post in this thread because if I started a new thread the title would be identical.  I am also using virtualbox_bin from AUR and while USB passthrough works just fine to my Windows XP guest, it can't be working any faster than USB v1.1 speed.  I have the appropriate entry in /etc/fstab and am a member of the virtualbox group.  No permissions problems and from what I can tell there's no corruption of data to/from any of my USB flash drives.  The only issue I've had other than the aforementioned lack of speed is with a 1TB Western Digital Passport.  It seemed to have "lost" some directories.  In other words they appeared completely empty on the XP side.  After shutting down the guest I verified that all of the files were indeed still there and intact.  I've basically chalked that one up to a deficiency in Windows XP.  But this speed issue is seriously holding me back.

  • Solaris 10 Oracle VDI VirtualBox 3.2 USB support

    Dear folks,
This my first time to the forum, since we are in the progress of deploying 240+ thin clients using Oracle VDI. I was piloting the project in a desktop machines with Sunray 3i. I installed Solaris 10 9/10 and Oracle VDI 3.2.1. However, while I was creating WinXP VM in Virtualbox 3.2 -the one which came with Oracle VDI 3.2- I got that error about being unable to connect to USB proxy server. Eventually this error leads to that all my VMs doesn't support USB redirection. So USB flash disk drive doesn't work in my Sunray 3i. Reading VirtualBox documentation Installing on Solaris hosts , I came across this info "*This does not apply to Solaris 10 hosts due to lack of USB support.*" Is this real?
Does this mean I can't redirect USB hardware to my VMs in the server via Sunray 3i? If this is true, what is the workaround for this problem?
    Please advise me. . .

Other than the documentation stating it doesn't work, in practice have you tested it to not work also?
We have two Solaris 10u5 machines running Vbox 3.2.12 and they pass through USB fine with our Sun Ray 3's (not 3i's but that shouldn't matter).
Did you enable USB passthrough in the VDI core by selecting the desktop pool and going to the Settings -> Sun Ray RDP Settings? Theres checkboxes to enable USB/smartcard pass through.

  • [solved] Virtualbox guest additions stopped working

    Hi,
I got some trouble after an upgrade of kernel yesterday. Virtualbox guest additions doesn't work any longer, and I have tried both downgrading virtualbox-guest-additions and the new linux that got pushed yesterday, but it's still not working.
Is there some know issue related to this?
Do anyone have information on how to trace errors with Virtualbox, or any guide on how to fix this.
I have also tried a reinstall of the modules without success.
    Thanks.

  • [SOLVED] no sound in Arch virtualbox guest

I had no sound in an Arch virtualbox guest.  The fix (original link below) was to use the alsa97 option in virtualbox settings and then to add
    options snd-intel8x0 ac97_clock=48000
    to
    /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf
Here is the link to where I read about this fix: http://www.withoutthesarcasm.com/fixing … irtualbox/

I mucked around with alsa mixer and muted a channel and now I have sound.  However, when I run:
    speaker-test -c 6
the app cycles through my speakers, however sound comes out of all the speakers at once for the individual channels front left and front right.  I do not get any sound out of either of the rears or the center.  I double checked alsa mixer and all the volumes are turned up.
Is there a way I can get arch to send sound to the correct speakers?

    Hi,
Although installing the printer on Windows by using Bootcamp may work, it is not guaranteed...
The windows OS actually being installed as a virtual envoirnment, which means your Windows OS is using your Mac OS USB drivers as the host, and not those intended for Windows.
Therefore it is not being recognized by the software.

You need a VirtualBox Guest installation for your guest system to  get the needed video driver run at your guest system.
Look at this how to do the installation on an Arch system:
    https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Ar … lBox_Guest
Alternatively, you can install the drivers with VirtualBox itself. There is a Menu entry 'Install Guest Additions...' under 'Devices'.
After calling the menu item there is a iso image installed wich you can mount in your guest system:
    # mount /dev/sr0 /mnt
    or something similar
On the CD there is a bash script /mnt/VboxLinuxAdditions.run which you can run to compile the device drivers.
To do this, you need gcc and linux headers installed on your guest system.
For using the compiled drivers, use the wiki article which I have linked above.
This Way has the disadvantage that you need to do the compilation again after every kernel update.

  • No 3D acceleration with Arch + virtualbox-guest-modules 4.3.24-1

I've been using Arch happily in 64 bit VirtualBox setup for a few months (under 64bit Win7), but after installing cool-retro-term, realized I have no 3D acceleration. glxinfo shows I'm using unaccelerated Gallium instead of Chromium:
OpenGL renderer string: Gallium 0.4 on llvmpipe (LLVM 3.5, 128 bits)
I've googled about 100 different bug reports and solution suggestions, but to no avail. Virtualbox forums say that a similar bug was fixed last June, and after that the glxinfo should give a dozen warnings about being unable to load stuff, but report the Chromium drivers. I have the latest version of virtualbox-guest-modules (4.3.24-1) which should contain the fix, but that doesn't help.
I installed Debian today to test things out, and indeed, I had 3D acceleration out of the box. This was likely because the initial install was Debian stable, and the latest Mesa versions (around early 2014) initially broke the 3D acceleration, so probably Mesa was too stable... Upgrading to Debian Jessie broke the 3D acceleration to same state as my Arch install (Gallium renderer instead of Chromium), which seems to support this hypothesis. HOWEVER, re-compiling the latest guest additions seemed to have the effect the Virtualbox forums suggested there should be -- 3D support was restored, and Chromium once again the renderer in glxinfo.
Has someone successfully gotten Arch under Virtualbox working with 3D acceleration without downgrading Mesa libraries? The Cinnamon desktop nags me about not having HW acceleration, and cool-retro-term uses 100 % CPU due to software rendering, so I'd rather have acceleration than not.

I have the same problem (with standard 3.19.2-1 kernel, vbox 4.3.26).
I tried grabbing an older mesa and mesa-libgl from the arch rollback machine (which worked the last time it stopped working) but version 10.4.6 just crashed my machine when gnome was starting. I'm guessing there are more packages required for that approach to work but i don't know what they are. A complete rollback would be clean but would probably be more annoying lol.

  • No network connection or virtualbox guest additions after upgrade

I followed the instructions carefully, from the homepage, when carrying out the latest upgrade. Unfortunately, virtualbox guest additions is no longer working and nor can I get a network connection. To clarify, arch is running inside a virtual machine.
I'm not sure where to start looking to be honest and would appreciate some pointers about to get me on the way towards solving this problem.
EDIT: The virtualbox problem is related to error in the package
    Thanks
    Last edited by n_t (2013-06-11 19:01:52)

for the guest additions, it's a bug in the package, look here: https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=164924
For the network, you'll have to tell us how you were setting up the network before that isn't working now.

  • Sunray Server and DTUs USB Support

I'm looking for help on usb support through the Sunray DTUs. I would like to be able to connect a usb device as I would with inside of Windows from a Sunray. USB drives are about the only thing I have working but not consistently. I've used the USB drive daemon posted on the Thinkthin blog and that works most of the time. I would like to use printers connected directly to the DTU. I have an idea on how to add the printer using the tmp/SUWut/units/<macaddress>/dev path but it seems that I cannot get it to work; maybe I'm using the wrong settings/drivers. I would also like to use USB cdroms, floppys, etc. Basically anything that doesn't require a special driver in Windows I would like to use on a DTU. It makes it hard to convince people that these can replace desktops when the functionality of things like USB are nowhere nearly as developed as Windows desktops. BTW, I need it both on the Solaris side and through the Sunray Windows connector. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I am not sure about sunray connector (windows) but within solaris it is rather transparent as long as the usb drive device is not NTFS. Plug it in and it should show up in /tmp/SUNWut/mnt/user/. I use a dvdwriter (lightscribe) the same way.
Whenever I have problems with users not being able to mount thumb drives it is always a NTFS issue or a high density thumb drive (8-16gb).
Not sure why sun doesn't put something more apparent on the desktop when you mount a drive. The rest of the world does that and it would make it a bit more user friendly. If you want a pain in the rear try using virtualbox through a sunray and mount usb devices. It works but it is really convoluted.
    Never bothered with printers.
