[SOLVED] util-linux causing read only /

Anyone else having this problem?
After upgrading to testing after boot the root filesystem is readonly with arch init and with systemd...
That's happening for me since 1 or 2 days, maybe the problem was earlier too, don't really know.
Downgraded util-linux (and its dependency mkinitcpio, but not rebuilding the initramfs) to repo version and my / filesystem is rw again after boot...
I have not seen anything on the mailinglist...

Sorry, I first wanted to check if I am the only one or if there are already hundreds of minions working on it.
Logs are complicated on a read only filesystem. Couldn't find anything in dmesg, it just seems that it wasn't remounted rw while booting for some reason.
Nothing fancy here, using the util-linux from core with the rest from testing:

  • [SOLVED] Root mounted as "Read-only filesystem". mkinitcpio issue?

    I am currently in the middle of setting up system encryption with LUKS. I have been making good progress so far, but I do have one remaining issue.
    After typing my LUKS password, the Linux kernel starts to complain that root is a read-only filesystem. "Starting NetworkManager... cannot touch file XYZ: Read-only filesystem". When it has finally finished booting, I am dropped into a TTY. I can log in and cat my files, but I cannot write to any files our use any programs that do (like pacman).
    I wonder if this is an mkinitcpio issue, but I am not sure. For whatever it's worth, here's my basic setup:
    * /dev/sda1: Boot
    * /dev/sda2: Swap
    * /dev/sda3: Root (LUKS/ext4)
    * menu.lst looks like this
    * /etc/fstab contains this line:
    /dev/mapper/root / ext4 defaults 0 1
    * /etc/mkinitcpio.conf contains these lines:
    MODULES="ext4"
    HOOKS="base udev pata scsi sata encrypt filesystems"
    edit: I should note that I did reinstall the kernel after making those edits to mkinitcpio.conf.
    Any idea what I'm doing wrong? As always, I really do appreciate the help. Thanks in advance!

    So it looks like this major problem was caused by a minor mistake. The file /etc/rc.sysinit was not executable. This made it impossible for the kernel to run the script, which in turn made it impossible for the kernel to mount /dev/sda2 (the swap partition) at /dev/mapper/swap. For some unknown reason, this in turn caused /dev/sda2 to be mounted at /, messing everything up.
    Anyway, a simple sudo chmod +x /etc/rc.sysinit fixed the problem. Thanks for the help, MadTux!

  • [SOLVED] Appending Quiet forces Read-Only filesystem

    After the update to initscripts I tried to append quiet to the kernel command line of GRUB and it simply causes my system to start-up as a read-only filesystem.

    title  Arch Linux x64
    root   (hd0,1)
    kernel /boot/vmlinuz26 root=/dev/disk/by-label/gnu_linux ro rootflags=data=writeback,commit=90,orlov,barrier=0,async
    initrd /boot/kernel26.img
    If I add "quiet" before "rootflags" everything fails to load on boot (udev, mounting HDD rw, alsa, cupsd, etc.) and after all of those it simply states "Read-Only Filesystem". If I add "quiet" after "async" it fails to boot altogether due to an unrecognized option.

  • [Solved] util-linux and eject in conflict

    I have installed all updates smoothly for the past few weeks, but this morning I got this:
    :: util-linux and eject are in conflict. Remove eject? [y/N]
    error: unresolvable package conflicts detected
    error: failed to prepare transaction (conflicting dependencies)
    :: util-linux and eject are in conflict
    I accepted the default action, N. I had checked the News before installing. And, so far, I have been unable to find anything related in these forums.
    How should I go about fixing this?

  • [partially solved] Root mounted as read-only, lots of errors

    I started my laptop without the power cord, and the boot stopped at several steps. I could continue the boot with pressing the power button for a second. XFCE booted fine, but some things were broken. Then I rebooted, and I cannot boot to xfce anymore at all (with or without power cord), since the root is mounted as read-only, and other partitions are not mounted at all. I didn't change my system at all so it is difficult to fix the problem. Now when I boot I just get lots of errors due to the read-only root partition. Fstab should be okay since it worked before, and has not been modified in months.

    It seems that laptop-mode remounted the partitions as read-only, because of bug in laptop-mode(?). I disabled that daemon, and now boot works. After that I can boot normally even with laptop-mode daemon, but now I'm afraid of booting without the power cord as that can break the system..

  • How to use JavaScript on a read-only textField

    Hi,
    is it possible to use JavaScript in conjunction with a read-only text field?
    When I tried to set a text in the read-only field "textField1" (see below), it didn't work (but worked with a non-read-only field):
    document.getElementById(form1:textField1).value = "Hello!";Thanks and regards,
    Felix

    Probem solved:
    I removed the read-only property and made it read-only by JavaScript instead by adding this
    alert("This field is read-only!");to the onClick and onKeyDown methods, respectively.

    I'm curious. Is the filesystem on the USB, ntfs ?
    If yes, did you install NTFS-3G ? https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/NTFS-3G. Happened to me 8 days ago .
    EDIT - Sorry for the repost using the same solution as my above post. Didn't see his link. Just surfed through the posts for the word "NTFS-3g" and it wasn't there.

  • External Hard Drive became read-only [SOLVED]

    I have a seagate external hard drive formated to ntfs. I have been using it successfully with arch until recently. Now when I try to add files to it it refuses. I tried changing the permission back with
    sudo chmod ugo+rwx -R /media/FreeAgent\ Drive
    But, it returned a "Read-Only file system" error for every file. I'm not sure what caused this, any suggestions? Thanks in advance for the help.

    Few days, or maybe a week ago, when i was trying to get X to work, i always had to use the computer's reset button because the keyboard would be irresponsive. Normally Arch would fix itself and re-reboot, but eventually it broke because of whatever reason. I thought of wiping the partition and reinstalling Arch from scratch as i didn't have many things on it anyway, but guess what, GParted could fix the filesystem.
    (By the way, in case you're curious, the reason X wasn't working properly was that i had no keyboard or mouse drivers installed.)
    If you have another Linux on your PC, or a Live CD, or even an installation CD, see if it has a disk-partitioning tool that has an option to fix filesystems. If it doesn't, but if the Linux you use is installed on your PC, just install GParted. But if you're using an installation- or Live CD, you can't do that, and in that case i think you'll have to get another Linux; i would say download Puppy Linux and make a Live CD of that; it has GParted and is friendly for newcomers in every other way too. And you can be sure that having a Live CD lying around is always something good. You never know when something like this will happen again.
    (Oh, i just realized that you already ARE using a Live CD... Keep installation CDs, and Puppy Linux, in mind though.)

  • I have downloaded Mountain Lion and Time Machine says that my Free Agent Goflex (Seagate) external 2gb drive cannot be used as it is read only. I tried disc utility to repair permissions but that block is greyed out. The disc verifies as being OKI

    Since installing Mountain Lion, Time Machine says says that my Free Agent Goflex (Seagate) external 2gb drive cannot be used as it is read only. I tried disc utility to repair permissions but that block is greyed out. The disc verifies as being OKI What next?

    Ok, I solved this problem! I ejected the drive and then disconnected it both from the power supply and the USB connector. I then reconnected everything and powered it up again and Then went into TM preferences and chose the drive as the backup. TM did a new backup (well over an hour) and now works as advertised.

  • Read only after install [SOLVED -- systemd related]

    Anyone know why a new (booted ~2-3 times) install would suddenly mount read-only?  /etc/fstab is fine, /etc/mtab reports rootfs / as rw, and I am logged in as root, but I get "read-only filesystem", hence there are no logs, etc.

    DSpider wrote:You probably removed "ro" from syslinux.cfg.
    Nope.   I have a startup service I use on fedora, and since the target I usually use wasn't apparent, I casually systemctl enabled it with WantedBy=local-fs.target, figuring if that was too early it would just fail (it writes to to disk).
    Using "mount -o remount,rw /" worked, so I tried a few things like switching fstab to use a UUID instead of a device node, that didn't work.  Finally I disabled the service and everything is back to normal.
    I did this a couple of times (enabling, rebooting, disabling, rebooting) just to confirm that was the cause. I guess that target runs before the rw remount, maybe this causes systemd to crap out in some way.  Shame it can't just fail the service, log it, and continue.  Maybe even an oversight verging on "bug", though I am sure they are aware of it already.
    I'd mark this "SOLVED" but I don't see a button...

  • Upgrade to util-linux-ng-2.17.1-1 breaks fsck[SOLVED]

    After upgrading to lastest util-linux-ng (2.17.1-1) from 2.17.1 "fsck" always hangs at boot. I downgraded to 2.17.1 and it worked again. No error messages are output when it hangs. System is a Dell XPS M1530 laptop.
    Thanks.

    Try to pass manually fsck and see how respond. (I assume that you don't use any encryption, lvm setup, just the standard)
    boot with init=/bin/bash
    /bin/mount -n -t tmpfs udev /dev -o mode=0755
    /bin/mount -n -t proc none /proc
    /bin/mount -n -t sysfs none /sys
    /bin/cp -a /lib/udev/devices/* /dev/
    echo > /proc/sys/kernel/hotplug
    /sbin/udevd --daemon
    /sbin/udevadm trigger
    /sbin/udevadm settle
    skip all above commands if you have devtmpfs (not by default in Arch Linux kernel26) only need this:
    mount -n -t devtmpfs none /dev
    Now run a fsck -fv on all your partitions.
    EDIT: use openvt is you need more consoles, run before fsck
