[solved] Slim themes conflict with e2fsprogs

util-Linux-ng conflicts with e2fsprogs. Remove e2fsprogs?
I am currently on my desktop trying to install arch on a old laptop.
Last edited by Jboxer (2010-02-08 01:24:46)I have discovered e2fsprogs has to deal with Ext2 Filesystem Utilities, i have installed Ext4, therefore I might try to remove the programs that are dependent of e2fsprogs. I would like to receive some more suggestions before I do anything.
Edit: It also is used for Ext4, so scratch that idea.

Cannot install xorg Get error about a conflict with e2fsprogs?
IIRC, I got this error message:
:: util-linux-ng conflicts with e2fsprogs. Remove e2fsprogs? [Y/n] y
error: failed to prepare transaction (could not satisfy dependencies)
And this message, too:
cryptsetup: requires e2fsprogs
I'm stuck.
Looks like I'm gonna reformat again!

not really, just do pacman -Syu
Fixed it, for some reason, pacman didn't do a full update. Was wondering why I didn't see much being updated.
Syu did the trick. -
[SOLVED] util-linux causing read only /
Anyone else having this problem?
After upgrading to testing after boot the root filesystem is readonly with arch init and with systemd...
That's happening for me since 1 or 2 days, maybe the problem was earlier too, don't really know.
Downgraded util-linux (and its dependency mkinitcpio, but not rebuilding the initramfs) to repo version and my / filesystem is rw again after boot...
I have not seen anything on the mailinglist...
Last edited by Cdh (2012-03-09 09:47:22)Sorry, I first wanted to check if I am the only one or if there are already hundreds of minions working on it.
Logs are complicated on a read only filesystem. Couldn't find anything in dmesg, it just seems that it wasn't remounted rw while booting for some reason.
Nothing fancy here, using the util-linux from core with the rest from testing:

[Solved] system upgrade fails with util-linux/eject conflict
I backed everything up, then deleted the fontconfig links and updated fontconfig, which worked properly. Then I did "pacman -Syu" and got this:
[root@myhost ~]# pacman -Syu
:: Synchronizing package databases...
core is up to date

:: util-linux and eject are in conflict. Remove eject? [y/N]
error: unresolvable package conflicts detected

Looks like two distinct problems. Note that I already have the /lib thing taken care of (turning it into a link), in a previous update. The forum searches I have done about this issue did not yield much.

Upgrading that infrequently is unlikely to work well in the long term.
Hell, I thought that was upgrading frequently. One of the reasons I'm on linux is because I don't have to get upgrades every hour as on Windows. "If it ain't broke, don't fix it." I ran a hell of a lot longer on Puppy linux without upgrades. Also, I backup before every upgrade, and then have to fiddle with pacnew files and all the rest, so the result is burning half a day at least on upgrades. I sure don't want to increase the frequency of that.
Arch is a rolling release so it changes basically every day. Updating every week or two is perfectly fine, but updating every couple months brigs you at odds with what Arch is about.
One of the reasons you may not want to use Arch is when you don't want to or can't spend time on the updates.
PaulBx1 wrote:The choice of defaults should (in my opinion) be decided by the needs of the unsophisticated user (such as myself), of which there are many more than the other type. Sophisticated users can intelligently decide between "y" and "n" because they know what is going on. Unsophisticated users just cross their fingers and hope the defaults work for them.
Arch is for experienced users and pacman doesn't do e.g. cleaning up - that's left to the user. pacman can surely help with it: 'pacman 'Qdt'.
It may feel unintuitive, but that's how it is. -
[Solved] util-linux and eject in conflict
I have installed all updates smoothly for the past few weeks, but this morning I got this:

I accepted the default action, N. I had checked the News before installing. And, so far, I have been unable to find anything related in these forums.
How should I go about fixing this?

[SOLVED] systemd-arch-units conflicts with mdadm and xinetd packages
Trying to upgrade my testing box today to latest/greatest and running into a file conflict between systemd-arch-linux providing systemd profiles for xinetd and mdadm which also think they control the same files:
error: failed to commit transaction (conflicting files)
/usr/lib/systemd/system/mdadm.service exists in both 'mdadm' and 'systemd-arch-units'
/usr/lib/systemd/system/xinetd.service exists in both 'systemd-arch-units' and 'xinetd'
Errors occurred, no packages were upgraded.
Should I just do a force? I am not relying on systemd yet. Or should I just remove systemd?

How can I resolve this? Ideally, I don't really want to update ruby.. I there a way I can skip updating ruby?
If not, do I need to wait until the rubygems package it updated?
Can I skip this somehow and update the rest of the system?
Last edited by tommed (2010-05-18 15:07:19)Thanks Allan, does that mean if I were so inclined, it would be safe to remove rubygems, then update ruby?
The reason I don't think I should update ruby is because I have a lot of rails apps on this server, and there is bound to be more than a couple which can't cope with the update to ruby 1.9 (it's a pretty major upgrade).
I'll check out the pacman.conf thanks! -
[solved] Arch linux access point with multiple interfaces for the NAT
Hi, I have a router running Arch linux. It is connected via LAN (let's call it eth0) to the internet. It has a second LAN interface, eth1, and a wireless interface in master mode, wlan0.
Now, Everything works perfectly except providing network connectivity on eth1 and wlan0 simultaneously. I followed the guide in the "Internet share" wiki article and use dnsmasq/hostapd for the AP. It appears as if all traffic from the router is sent to the wlan0 interface, even if it came in through eth1 (for example, dhcp requests). I cannot really find information how to solve this. The words "bonding" and "iptables" are floating around, but there is not really an easy to understand tutorial for this.
What do I need to do to use both the eth1 and wlan0 interface (for different clients!) on my router?
Best regards, and thank you in advance
Jan Oliver
/e: This seems to be my problem: http://www.novell.com/support/kb/doc.php?id=7000318 How do I solve this using the usual iptables? (The way described in the article doesn't work: "RTNETLINK answers: No such process" errors.)

In making this latest update pacman eject told me that was going to be replaced by util-linux ... before answering affirmatively check the official website of ArchLinux to see if there were any announcement about this change ... I assumed there was none like it was nothing critical and permitted the installation of this patch ....
At the end of the error message you see in the pictures I show that I can run a command or shortcut systemctl keyboard to enter the "default mode" but I have no way to give commands and keyboard shortcut does not work.
No I could do to recover the system (other than reinstalling ArchLinux with new. Iso) ...
Someone has spent the same??? found a solution???
Greetings and thanks in advance!

[solved] xfce4-terminal spam after update to util-linux 2.25-3
I use the setterm command inside a file in /etc/profile.d so that I can prevent the screen from blanking when using a console, along with a couple of other things.
After the latest update to util-linux (2.25-3), whenever I open xfce4-terminal these lines show up:
setterm: terminal xterm does not support --blength
setterm: terminal xterm does not support --bfreq
setterm: terminal xterm does not support --blank
[gilmoreja@JamesPC ~]$
Is there a better way to handle making sure setterm runs when a console is used, but not necessarily when a terminal is opened? Or is there some other way to solve this issue? There doesn't seem to be a switch for setterm for any kind of "quiet mode."
Last edited by gilmoreja (2014-08-06 18:36:28)I think that the shell started in a console is a login shell, and it is not the case in a graphical terminal.
A login shell has a '-' at the start of $0; so you can test that and condition the execution of the setterm commands:
if [[ $0 == '-bash' ]]; then
setterm ...
setterm ...

Hey is there any way to have small desktop icons without downloaded or moved icons getting caught underneath the dock? setting the grid's margins or something like that, 3rd party app possibly?? Amazing how Apple could overlook this annoying behavior
