[SOLVED] VLC plays MP3, rhythmbox doesn't

Hello,
I'm trying to play mp3's in Rhythmbox (which is playing .wav files just fine) but it can't seem to handle them.
I tried opening a couple in VLC, and they worked perfectly.
Anyone know how to fix this?
Thanks!

  • [solved] VLC: Playing a DVD: "Device name" history?

My girlfriend used to use Windows XP, and the OS decided to cave in until it blue-screened on boot.  I use linux full-time, so I thought I would install it on her computer instead of Windows to see if she liked it.  She really likes the speed and stability, but the technical aspect of it confuses her pretty frequently - linux is no easy dog to put a leash on!
So I'm trying to make everything very friendly for her.  I installed VLC media player, and she likes it cause it always works well, but when she goes to play DVDs, the "Device name" field is always empty, so she needs to enter /dev/sr0 every time.  Is there a way to have /dev/sr0 already present in the device name for when she decides to play a DVD?

Right on!  I can't believe I missed that in the menus ... man.  Most of my posts have been really obvious.  I suppose this is a good thing, since all the complicated stuff is worked out for the most part

  • [SOLVED] unable to play mp3 or flac files in mpd, .dts files play fine

I had a perfect running mpd setup before I tried to fiddle around with some dependancies to get xbmc-svn to compile without errors. I installed some AUR packages (ffmpeg-svn, x264-git, libva-sds, libvpx, libid3tag).
After that I started to experience trouble with mpd, it start fine and says it plays audio files just fine but whenever i play a mp3 or flac file the progress bar just looks like it's playing the file but I hear no sound. Whenever I play a .dts file i hear the sound correct.
I'm very curious to why this happends.
I rolled back the packages mentioned above but the issue remains unsolved.
My setup: pc is connected to receiver by hdmi cable using the latest alsa version with digital passthrough over hdmi, currently using mpd-git from AUR

I gave my player to my flatmate so she could here music on her vacation to the US, and that's when the problem started. I never had this problem before, and i wonder if she acidently pushed a buttom she shouldn't. I can't figure out how to fix it. Anyone has a clue what has happend, or if the player is "lost" :-( ?! PS: The player is brand new.

Unfortunately, NONE of my friends use Windows anymore , even at work we use Linux for security reasons. So what am i supposed to do now... They have a link at Creative that makes you belei've that they support Linux and offer you the possibility to choose the operating system, in other words=Linux. When i told in a mail to Creative Norway that they offer Linux support at their download-site, they actualy had the nerve to tell me that they don't do that!! I told them to remove the choice if they don't offer it, and don't try to tell people that they are eighter blind or stupid, and i pasted the Link + added a Screenshot of the page into the mail!! I realy got upset. It is the last time i by something from Creative. My first player from Creative lasted exactly 2 weeks, after that he stopped working for one odd reason, so i paid a little more in order to get a better one in exchange, and that device didn't li've longer than month eighter?
Not exactly QUALITY we are talking about..aren't we?
What to do, what to do?
    Anyone has a clue?

    Hi
When i try play a mp3 file, with juk, the system says this:
    [zuargo@zuargo-archlinux ~]$ juk
[zuargo@zuargo-archlinux ~]$ xine is asking to seek behind the end of the data stream
I have installed xine-phonon and it is uses default.
I have tried installing gstreamer phonon (with all official of the repository plugins) but I have the same problem... I can't hear anything...
I have tried installing pulseaudio but... nothing...
I have tried installing oss but.... nothing
I have tried erasing the file ~.xine/catalog.cache but... nothing...
some web pages says solved it issue installing a package called libxine-ffmep but it is not in pacman...
really I tried many options but I can't solved this problem
of course, I can play mp3 files in the command line (throughout mpg123) and they sound good...

phonon-xine depends on xine-lib which depends on ffmpeg, but its probably worth checking to make sure they are installed.
    I have installed xine-lib

Same problem here - also for kalarm. Now I will probably oversleep tomorrow.
Well, another file format could solve that problem...

  • Banshee won't play MP3s [SOLVED]

    Hi everyone,
Banshee won't play MP3s which are playable in
VLC, Amarok and the Firefox and Chomium when opened directly.
When i attempt to play an MP3 it skips next track until it reaches the bottom of the list.
I would love to simply use Banshee since it can download the content from the Amazon Cloud.
Thanks in advance for any help

  • [Solved] Playing mp3...

    Hi,
Let me give you a little background so it doesn't look like I am a complete retard beyond salvation... I am a slightly above average Windows user, and never used linux before. I wanted to learn to use linux and figured if I want to learn linux properly, I should go with something like arch, instead of something like Ubuntu, where most things are done for you automatically. Anyhow, I finally managed to dual boot arch with Windows 7 successfully after 3 days of struggle, and installed KDE.
Here is my question. In Windows, when I click on an mp3 file, the default player that I've set will open up and the song starts playing. I can use this player to control; ie: pause, stop, restart, etc. When I fired up Dolphin and clicked on an mp3 file in arch, the music started automatically, but nothing really opened up. Mplayer Media Player showed up briefly the task bar, but it was gone before the music ended. I tried clicking on it, but nothing happened.
I googled Mplayer Media Player, and learned that it is command-input based, and it doesn't have a GUI. Fair enough. I learned that I can hit esc key to stop and the space bar to pause. Empowered with this knowledge, I clicked on the mp3 file again to test it. When I hit the esc key, nothing happened. The music kept playing. The same with the space bar. I even opened up the terminal and tried again in the unlikely chance that it might help. Again, no go. I tried clicking on another mp3 file to see what happens. In Windows, the song currently playing stops and the new one starts. In arch, however, the new one began to play on top of the old one. Again, I couldn't figure out how to stop the songs, switch between the songs, etc.
Obviously, there has to be a way to control mp3 playback, and I really didn't want to resort to posting here to find out how to play mp3 properly, and let everyone know how stupid I am..... Any insight would be greatly appreciated. I tried searching the forum, but most people seem to have problem with their computers not making sound, instead of the problem stopping the sound....
    Thanks in advance.
    Luke

Standalone mplayer is not really user-friendly, there are multiplie mp3 players for KDE available in the repos. For playing singe files you can use dragon player (part of kdemultimedia), if you want a full media player with playlist management you have juk, amarok, clementine...

  • [solved] dolphin do not play mp3 in sidebar

As i navigate to my music-folder and mark an mp3-file, dolphin shows on the seidebar a little player with some extra information like Typ or Tags. But if i trie to play this file with the button, nothing happens. If i try to move forward within the file with the slider, i could only move the entire window.
    Maybe i miss a package?
    qmmp plays all files well.

Check in System Settings > Multimedia if phonon outputs sound. Check if amarok or dragonplayer play mp3 files. If you're using phonon-gstreamer, you need gstreamer0.10-ugly-plugins to decode mp3 files.

  • *solved*Amarok not playing mp3s

never had a problem before. all of a sudden I am getting these errors.
The xine-engine claims it cannot play MP3 files.
No suitable demux plugin. This often means that the file format is not supported.
    Plays fine w/ sudo amarok
I am part of the audio group. I can play mp3s and others w/ my other players.
Edit: followed this advice I found through googleing
In your /home/user/.xine folder there is a hidden file called catalog.cache.  Make a backup copy of that then copy catalog.cache file from the new account you created.
I just copied my root catalog.cache to my users

I'm gonna assume you have xine installed, given you have xine-engine.  So try "xine [some song].mp3" in a terminal and see if it posts any messages.  That'll give us a hint at least.

  • Just updated itunes on a new mac - doesn't want to play mp3s?

Hi everyone, I just picked up a newish g4 tower and am having trouble with itunes.
the os is 10.4.11 and I did the itunes update.
I tried to download a couple songs but mp3's won't register in the library window. I downloaded 2 m4a files and they both play.
does itunes no longer play mp3's?
Or are all the files I download trash? I'm using limewire and have never had this problem with the old itunes. should I switch to a different fileshare service?
I'm afraid to try to transfer my mp3 library from my old g4!
much thanks to anyone with advice! -CM

  • SWF to play mp3 files located on the server

    Hello,
Does anyone know if it is possible to create an SWF file that can play mp3 files directly from the server, without the need for a streaming media server or external JS.
And also for the application to read the current directory its located in and build a playlist based on the files inside.
any information of examples would be greatly appreciated.
    Peter.

As for loading and playing the files there is no issue.  Simply load them as you would load any file.  You can even use a relative path if they are in the same folder as the SWF, or a sub-folder that is in the folder with the SWF.
As for looking at the server directory for what files are there, and using them - I know of no way to do this.  That doesn't mean it is impossible, just that I haven't come across a method in my experience.
What I typically do is to archive the list of files in an XML file, and load the XML.  I know, that adds an extra step, and an extra file, but it is the easiest method for approximating what you want to do.
    Let me edit this response.
You could use javascript, or a server language to grab the list of files in the directory and pass it into Flash via the ExternalInterface classes.

  • Netstream.play() mp3 file

    Hello.
I am having troubles playing an mp3 stream, using
    Netstream.play()
According to AS 3.0 livedocs in Adobe...
    quote:
To play MP3 files, use mp3: before the stream name. To play
the ID3 tags of MP3 files, use id3: before the stream name
    http://livedocs.adobe.com/flash/9.0/ActionScriptLangRefV3/flash/net/NetStream.html)
When I test playing a video stream (.flv), everything works
    fine.
The error I get when I try to play an mp3 is:
Failed to play (stream ID: 1) code:
    NetConnection.Call.BadVersion
I tried every different type of combinations:
stream.play("mp3:test.mp3"), (test), (test.mp3) and nothing works.
However, only in "mp3:test" I get the Call.BadVersion error. On the
other ones, simply it doesn't play nothing... It finds the file
though... because I get some results in the event handlers that i
don't get when I enter an invalid filename...
My question is... What is "NetConnection.Call.BadVersion",
and is it really possible to play an mp3 stream. Are there other
    methods?

    Hi,
Just check this url .its good you will get some idea.

  • Why won't my Vision:M 30GB play MP3

Can anyone help me out and explain to me why my Vision:M freezes up when I try to play 96kbps mp3's?Doesn't seem to have a problem playing mp3's at 44kbps or .wav files, but then that kind of defeats the purpose of being able to sample a rather sizeable file down ( @ 30+MB per?file ) so I can get as many mp3's ( @ 2.5+MB per file ) onto the player. The firmware on the player is the same version as what can be currently downloaded. I do recall reading something about formatting and reloading the player and haven't tried that yet... Appreciate the assistance.
