thanks,so I'll look deeply into that..I haven't touched anything related though..
Is (s)mplayer2 raccomended nowadays?
edit [solved]:
Apparently I had somehow "option DamageEvents" set to false in xorg configuration and that broke vdpau. Classic  pebkac.
Allan is safe for now

    This is now solved for me and not really a testing issue any more, but for those that search and find this, hopefully the following helps.
    Building dvdstyler 1.71 and 1.72beta4 also failed, albeit with different errors.  Seen that wxsvg (dependency) was also horribly out of date, so updated and rebuilt using abs.  That did not help.  Searched upstream forums and bug trackers, found someone with Debian was reporting a similar problem, and was told that 1.72b4_1 fixed his issue, so I took the following steps:
    Upgraded ffmpeg to ffmpeg-svn and x264 to x264-git.  This required mplayer to be rebuilt, done.   (Not sure if these upgrades are required or not, but they work great for me, so...)
    Then using abs and the following source:  http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/wxsv … 2?download
    used this package build to update wxsvg:   (sed lines removed as they are no longer applicable to current ffmpeg)
    pkgname=wxsvg
    pkgver=1.0
    pkgrel=1
    pkgdesc="C++ library to create, manipulate and render SVG files"
    arch=('i686' 'x86_64')
    url="http://www.wxsvg.org/"
    license=('custom:wxWindows')
    depends=('wxgtk' 'libart-lgpl' 'ffmpeg')
    options=('!libtool')
    source=(wxsvg-1.0.tar.bz2)
    build() {
      cd "$srcdir/wxsvg-$pkgver"
      ./autogen.sh || return 1
      ./configure --prefix=/usr || return 1
      make || return 1
      make DESTDIR="$pkgdir" install || return 1
      install -D -m644 COPYING "$pkgdir/usr/share/licenses/wxsvg/COPYING" || return 1
    Then using abs and this source:  http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/dvds … 2?download
    used this package build to update dvdstyler:  (eliminated mjpegtools from dependencies)
    pkgname=dvdstyler
    pkgver=1.7.2b4_1
    pkgrel=1
    pkgdesc="Cross-platform DVD authoring application"
    arch=('i686' 'x86_64')
    url="http://www.dvdstyler.de/"
    license=('GPL')
    depends=('wxsvg' 'libexif' 'dvdauthor' 'cdrkit' 'dvd+rw-tools')
    optdepends=('xine-ui: DVD preview support'
                'dvdisaster: ECC support')
    source=(DVDStyler-1.7.2b4_1.tar.bz2)
    build() {
      cd "$srcdir/DVDStyler-$pkgver"
      ./autogen.sh || return 1
      ./configure --prefix=/usr || return 1
      make || return 1
      make DESTDIR="$pkgdir" install || return 1
    And it works!  (even better than before   )
    I could whine and cry about outdated packages and whatnot, but in reality, I switched to Arch to be able to understand and fix issues like this for myself, and that's exactly what I got here.  Thanks to all the Arch developers and forum moderators and all the users who come to everyone's aid all the time.  And thanks to above package maintainer, who without the initial package builds, this would of been that much more difficult.
    Arch is the greatest...

  • [SOLVED] Update broke font anti-aliasing

    I've been updating daily, and there were just a few updates today (Sunday, 22 January).  However, almost immediately my fonts went ugly.  I tried rebooting, but it didn't help.  Anti-aliasing doesn't work anymore in Xfce or KDE, which is all I tried.
    I did notice there was a udev update, but there were also some library updates that I can't remember.  I have no idea what broke.
    Any insights or suggestions?  The system is ugly enough that it's hard to read, so I'm moving over to an Arch I haven't updated today.

    Solved.  For some reason I suddenly needed to add a hand-rolled ~/.fonts.conf -- one might have hoped that the Xfce settings would actually work for the Xfce panel and menus, but I guess not.

  • [solved] who command doesn't show X server session

    Hi there,
    shouldn't the `who` command show all logged in user sessions, including my X server session?
    However, who only shows my tty1 session:
    [orschiro@thinkpad]$ who
    orschiro tty1 2013-10-25 17:01
    What is the output of who on your system?

    Alright. The point is, what do I need to do in order that who shows my X session?
    I tried export DISPLAY=:0 but this doesn't add :0 to the who command listing.
    The reason I am asking is that I want to use the following dispatcher script which queries for :0, assuming that who shows the display variable.
    #!/bin/sh
    INTERFACE=$1 # The interface which is brought up or down
    STATUS=$2 # The new state of the interface
    case "$STATUS" in
    up) # $INTERFACE is up
    USERS=$(ps -o user --no-headers -C dropbox)
    killall dropbox
    for user in $USERS; do
    su -c "DISPLAY=$(who | sed -e "/$user/! d;/pts/d;s/^.*[^0-9]\\(:[0-9.]\\+\\).*$/\\1/p;d" | head -n1) dropboxd &" $user
    done
    down) # $INTERFACE is down
    esac

  • [SOLVED] I broke X by pressing a function key

    My laptop is a Lenovo y50 4K.  I have Nvidia hybrid optimus graphics with the proprietary Nvidia driver and xrandr modesetting in my .xinitrc.  I have been using my current configuration successfully for a few months.  The issue started when I pressed FN + F3.  This is the function key that toggles my video output source / screen mirroring to the HDMI plug.  I meant to press FN + F2, which is the one that toggles my screen backlight, but my finger missed the key.  I didn't have anything plugged into the HDMI port at the time and X immediately crashed.  I tried to restart X, but it segfaulted.  I tried pressing the function key again, but under TTY all it does is type "p" in console.  I tried restarting the computer, but that changed nothing.  X still crashes.  I tried loading X with a HDMI screen plugged in, no change.  Now I started to think that it was maybe a bios level toggle, so I looked for an option to disable the HDMI plug in my bios settings.  There was none.  I tried rebooting into Windows plugging a device into the HDMI port and cycling through the HDMI screen mirroring options, disabling the HDMI port there and rebooting.  I tried this because I had a wifi issue in the past that turned out to be a bios level toggle from my wifi function key that could only be set from Windows.  At this point, The HDMI output would no longer mirror the screen at bios and Grub, but as soon as the Linux kernel loaded, the screen would mirror over HDMI again.  I don't know if it's relevant or not, but I have used my HDMI port for screen mirroring in the past without problems, but I never used the function key to toggle it before.
    This error shows up under dmesg when I try to start X.

    It turned out to be exactly this.  Thank you.  It would seem that the function key causing the crash was completely unrelated to my not being able to restart X.  I found the bug report here.
    I followed the advice in the comments and got it running by renaming /usr/lib/xorg/modules/libglamoregl.so so glamor can't load.  I'll mark the thread as solved.  Hopefully this bug gets addressed quickly because that fix feels like a dirty hack.

  • Ok...who broke iMessage login with the Messages App?

    All of a sudden the other day I couldn't log into my iMessage account in the Messages application on Mac OS 10.8.5 on my Macbook Pro.  ....what gives?  At first it would try to log in, then I get a window saying that I couldn't log in and to contact support, blah blah blah... And this was the "validation code" -  2759-9329-5430
    I called support, they said that there was probably just a glitch and it'd be fixed in an hour... it's been about 4 days.  Still can't log in.  After I received that first message that took me to this page, then is just started saying "can't log in."  No more info.  Now...I'm back to getting that "validation code" page link again...
    ***, Apple?  Nothing but problems with your junk lately.  Nothing has changed on my end...  Who spilled a beer on the iCloud server again?  Cut that **** out, man!
    ...aside from that....anyone have any ideas?

    HI,
    Call Support again and asked to be moved up the supply chain if you don't get the right response.
    Basically the app is telling you that Apple have coded your account for some reason and only Support can sort it out using that number.
    I have read suggestions that in some cases it might be linked to the payment method listed in the iTunes Store/App Store and changing it can help.
    If the phone does not work or is unsatisfactory then iTunes and the App Store have a Help menu when you check out the page fully (iTunes is at the Bottom when you are In the Store.)
    Then use the Support item which will open a page in the browser.
    Select Contact Support from the bottom of the Menu
    In the next page (for the iTunes one) select the Contact iTunes Store.
    You will be offered suggestions.
    Basically follow the Manage Account options until you are offered an email contact point.
    The only way I know of "fixing" this messages is to contact Support.

  • [SOLVED] Glibc broke pacman after 2 months without update

    Hello all !
    So I did an update of the system after two months.
    To begin with I couldn't update because of the issue with the /lib.
    Pacman was complaining that /lib was existing in the filesystem.
    I used the command provided by the wiki and by some posts to update :
    pacman -Syu --ignore glibc,curl
    Everything went fine and 422 packages were upgraded.
    But then when I tried to use pacman, I had the following error :
    pacman: /lib/libc.so.6: version 'GLIBC_2.16' not found (required by /lib/libarchive.so.12)
    I tried to follow several posts, and that's what I did :
    - downgrade pacman (extracting the tar.xz directly in the /)
    - downgrade curl (extracting the tar.xz directly in the /)
    - upgrade pacman to 2.16 (downloading it on the web and extracting it directly in the /)
    I still have the same problem with version 'GLIBC_2.16' not found.
    When I tried to upgrade pacman to 2.16, no files were put in /lib, they were put instead to /usr/lib, so I don't see how it could have solved the problem.
    Thank you for your help, I'm desperate now ! (by the way, I use yaourt)

    WorMzy wrote:Which post? You've been told never to use --force during this update: https://www.archlinux.org/news/the-lib- … a-symlink/
    The message error was different from the one about this update : https://www.archlinux.org/news/the-lib- … a-symlink/
    It was that I installed glibc by extracting the tarball, and I was trying to reinstall it cleanly using pacman. It was complaining about the files of glibc already installed.
    That's why I used the flag --force, only to overwrite glibc install.
    WorMzy wrote:It seems to me that you're only interested in a quick fix, and aren't interested in understanding what the problem is. Coupled with the fact that you haven't updated in two months, I'm going to tentatively suggest that Arch isn't the distro for you.
    Actually I am quite interested in understanding what the problem is, but even following the different posts I don't clearly get it, because I can find solutions, but not many explanations.
    As for the fact that I didn't do an update in two months, it was because I had a master thesis to write, and I couldn't afford even one day of messing around with my system. So I guess I had my reasons for doing so.
    I finally found the solution to be able to chroot back into my system, I simply had to delete /lib, and to symlink /usr/lib to /lib.
    Now everything seems to work fine.
    I am sorry if my previous posts were not clear enough, as I'm chrooting into a live usb on my desktop and using my laptop at the same time, it was hard for me to keep track of all the topics I followed.
    Thank you for your help, now I'll try and solve my booting problems !

  • [Solved] I broke Gnome

    I have been playing with Gnome Shell for the the last couple days. I was doing some stuff this morning (a bunch of different things), then I rebooted and just got a black screen with my mouse (which I could move around). GDM auto logs me in.
    I regenerated my xorg.conf (even though I wasn't playing with that), and that didn't help.
    Is there a way to kind of "restore gnome" or something or how should I go about troubleshooting this?
    I can hit ctrl+alt+f2 to get to another terminal window.

  • So i accidently dropped my ipod on the sement. i went to go get my screen replaced and the man said the ipod was already broken but he was the one who broke it. so what can apple do to help me?

    So i accidently dropped my ipod on the sement. I went to get it fixed. The man who was "fixing it" completely messed up my ipod. So now my ipod screen does not work at all. What can you guys do to help me? Is there any chance I can replace it for a much cheaper price?

    Is there a much cheaper price? What if i bring a 3rd generation ipod that doesn't really work and the 4th generation ipod that kinda works?

  • [SOLVED] "alsaconf" broke my sound.

    Hi, I've been having problems some strange background noises for a while, so I did a quick search and found this thread, which to my knowledge fixed the problem. So, I rebooted and the noises were still there, then I checked out the ALSA Arch wiki and read the configuration section. Realising what I may have just done I tested my sound only to find I had killed it.
    As far as I know it has broken udev and modprobe.conf (which for some reason is empty). I tried to solve the problem myself but I'm feeling  a little lost and a little out of my depth.
    Can anyone please help?

  • [solved] updates broke gnome

    i know this is a stupid and noobish title, but i really couldn't think of a better one.
    after a recent update, lots of things broke, and i'm not even sure if they're related to one thing or just issues of their own.
    1, after the upgrade, i couldn't log in with slim (i use the inittab method). i tried going to runlevel 3 and starting slim as a daemon, same effect. right after logging in, the hard drive stops and i only have a cursor. tried starting gdm as a daemon, same thing.  the funny thing is that i can start gnome with 'startx'.
    2, gnome-panel says the clock applet is broken, but i've seen topics on that.
    3, nm-applet asks for a password (probably because i started the session with 'startx'), but upon entering it, the dialog freezes.
    i only have one response: wtf?! i'm not a complete noob, but i really can't do anything about this.. is anyone getting these problems? is there a fix/workaround?
    thanks,

  • [Solved] Update broke some things

    Okay, I just ran pacman -Syu and among the kernel and ndiswrapper updates some important stuff got broken.
    1.   When I try to boot up it gets to the file systems spits out a bunch of stuff and gives me this error
    /etc/rc.sysinit line 271 5915 segmentation fault /bin/mount -o remount, rw
    What do i have to do to that line to let it boot normally?
    2.   This isnt a fatal error, just an annoyance.  but in that same file on line 350 it says: /usr/bin/kbd_mod no such file or directory.
    Can I delete this line?
    3.  and finally once again, these updates broke the wireless.  When I run netcfg2 mynetwork I get a wireless association failed error.
    Any help on this?

    Well right now I can boot using the fallback option in grub.
    Here is fstab

    I did an pacman -Syu update a few days ago when I first posted this thread, installed about 18 packages.  Then when I tried to boot up again, I started getting the segfault error.

    .include /usr/lib/systemd/system/[email protected]
    [Unit]
    Description=netcup uplink ipv4/6
    BindsTo=sys-subsystem-net-devices-ens3.device
    After=sys-subsystem-net-devices-ens3.device
    Changing the last to lines to the right interface name made it work again.
    BindsTo=sys-subsystem-net-devices-eth0.device
    After=sys-subsystem-net-devices-eth0.device
    Don't know why systemd changed the name of my interface, but I'm anxious to know when it will do it again.
    Works for now. So its kind of solved.

    Solved.  For some reason I suddenly needed to add a hand-rolled ~/.fonts.conf -- one might have hoped that the Xfce settings would actually work for the Xfce panel and menus, but I guess not.

  • [Solved] Systemd broke KDE

    OK, well, looks like my problems weren't actually gone. So i recently upgraded and switched to systemd and all that. I did go through the wiki for systemd and KDE and run the commands to start kdm on boot, and after a few other minor issues I managed to get it to start up once last night, but now it won't. It's definitely attempting to launch kdm, but it immediately drops back to the command-line login. X does work -- I can run 'X -retro' just fine.
    I'll put some logs here, but I don't see anything obviously wrong in any of these. If you have any other thoughts on troubleshooting this let me know.
    Here's my kdm.log:

    All the x.org drivers/modules are compiled for a specific version of X. The older X driver will probably work, as long as it is not too old to be compatible at all, but you need to recompile it and it will automatically choose the 1.13 ABI of the installed x.org server as long as support for 1.13 is already in the driver.
    Personally I would just recommend upgrading to xf86-video-ati-git from aur instead of downgrading.
    I have the 1.13 Xorg server installed; I installed xf86-video-ati-git from the aur and X stopped loading with the following errors:

    What Cdh said, with one small note:  I love this new trend of blaming systemd for just about anything, when it's rarely it's fault.
    Probably should have included this in the original post: If I remove the systemd init line before booting, KDE comes up just fine (but my wifi doesn't work anymore, which is why I'm trying to switch to systemd). If I leave systemd on, it doesn't. Seems logical to assume systemd is somehow involved.
