[SOLVED]xfce 4.10 wallpaper issue
prior to upgrading xfce to 4.10 i had a big list of wallpaper .jpg's & used a script to reload xfdesktop so as to make them 'rotate'
4.10 has this built in & i used for a while but for some reason now the wallpaper selection tool is no longer recognising my images i think my mime types have messed up somewhere along the line but i have never touched these.
how do i enable logging for xfce so as to work out what has gone wrong?
is anyone else experiencing this problem?
this is really weird & i am totally confused as i am certain the last time i powered up my pc all was ok but have checked log files but cannot find anything
please help

i deleted the list, recreated but still they fail to even show in the list!
my list did have 91 items in there but now it is down to 3 images:
arch shinnyblack.jpg
& 2 other png files
if i try to open them in ristretto they fail to display in there aswell
thunar is displaying the thumbnail fine & gimp can open them too as can feh
really odd!

[SOLVED] XFCE - Incorrect windows placement
Hi,
I'm currently having a issue with XFCE's window placement. In the settings panel, under Window Manager Tweaks > Placement, window placement is set to Center for all windows, but this option has no effect. I tried changing it to place windows under the mouse, but it also has no effect on the windows placement. Windows keep opening on the screen corners.
I checked the forums for similar problems, and found some results, but none of the solutions worked for me. Also, those are quite old topics.

Xfce 4.8 xfwm4 window placement settings no longer have any effect.

I believe the way this works is that the size (or ratio, the option is actually called placement_ratio IIRC and is a ratio of window size vs screen size) you specify here is the minimum to trigger "smart placement." If the window isn't (at least) of that size, then the default (i.e. center or under mouse pointer, as defined below) will be used. So if you want every window to use the default placement, you should set the minimum size for smart placement to be as large as possible. (In fact, I believe with a ratio set to 100 (i.e. slider to the max) it should always use the default placement, regardless of window size, which is want you're after if I'm not wrong.)
If even with the slider to the max you get new windows placed using smart placement, then it sounds like a bug I'd say.
(Also, just as FYI and though you might simply want all windows to be centered, I wasn't happy with xfwm's smart placement myself, you can see this topic for a (IMO) better alternative.) -
Annoying desktop wallpaper issues
Lately i'm having issues with my wallpaper on my macbookpro. The state of my wallpaper now is white, just white nothing else. I try and apply a new image but it doesnt seem to do anything. Whenever i reboot my mbp, my old wallpaper images displays for a couple of seconds until osx is fully loaded but then goes back to white. I use a secondry monitor as well, but it displays images, just not the screen on my mbp. The mmp works perfecly, nothing else wrong with it (touch wood) just this really annoying desktop wallpaper issue!
Anyone have any ideas?

Long story short, I updated Xfce to 4.8 few days ago, and everything went well. I was running my basic programs and VM during these days.
But today, all of a sudden, some programs didn't launch anymore. xfce4-mixer quit with a "Bus Error" message, and many other things started failing. After a reboot, it just got weirder: NMApplet appeared in the tray and displayed my network (wireless), but clicking it just "freezes" the icon. Aside from that, xfce wouldn't load my keymap (es), instead it defaults to a "us" keymap.
The only packages I updated today were a few python and power management packages. Downgrading these (and dbus) didn't help.
Also, X terminals (xfce's terminal, tilda, etc) behave strangely when scrolling back: A few lines are displayed, but scrolling up further just displays empty space.
No major configs were edited during this time. Googling a bit gave me results about dbus being twice on rc.conf, but that's not the issue. My current rc.conf has dbus and hal after it (Method 1 in archwiki). Excluding dbus (Method 2) doesn't change things. I also tried excluding hal (Xfce 4.8 doesn't require it anymore, correct?), but it's the same thing.
Xfce itself seems to run sorta fine though: The shutdown command inside the DE works, and some apps do run (power management, xfce notes, notifications). Others give out several errors: Chromium for example says it "can't create a directory socket" or something (using another system right now, so I can't check), while avant-window-navigator gives out dbus and gconf errors.
dmesg doesn't display anything out of the ordinary at the end (the blank space in terminals issue doesn't let me read too far back.)
EDIT: A dbus-daemon process is constantly using 50% of the CPU. And the kernel is 2.6.36 (upgraded it quite some time ago, had no issues)
Any ideas on how to proceed would be greatly appreciated.

Since nothing would work, I decided to back up my system files and pacman cache, among other things. When checking my pkgcache folder size, I noticed that the / partition was at 100%...
So running ncdu I find out slim had a 9.9 GB log for some reason. Deleted that, rebooted, and everything is back to normal.
So now I mark this as solved, thankfully. Now the slim logs are not growing like crazy. -

I have sony svz13114gxx laptop with xfce4 DE, i just tried to hook up external vga monitor to laptop and everything configures right (no mirroring) with this run in normal session:

This is where the problems start. On reboot Slim desktop manager seems to be stretched properly across the two monitors, but the I login and the display switches back to being mirrored, my xfce gtk2 theme is disabled in favor of somee default looking one, my icons are back to default, and none of my custom keyboard shorcuts work.
I can then use xrandr to get the displays in extended mode again, but the themes and icons etc do not revert. And on reboot, i have the same issue.
I have tried the sourcing ~/.xprofile, ~/.xinitrc, and ~/.config.xfce4/xinitrc routes, putting the xrandr cammands above the exec lines and that doesn't even enable VGA1.

This is where the problems start. On reboot Slim desktop manager seems to be stretched properly across the two monitors, but the I login and the display switches back to being mirrored, my xfce gtk2 theme is disabled in favor of somee default looking one, my icons are back to default, and none of my custom keyboard shorcuts work.
I can then use xrandr to get the displays in extended mode again, but the themes and icons etc do not revert. And on reboot, i have the same issue.
I have tried the sourcing ~/.xprofile, ~/.xinitrc, and ~/.config.xfce4/xinitrc routes, putting the xrandr cammands above the exec lines and that doesn't even enable VGA1.

I'm using XFCE as well, 2 monitors, the left one rotated 90º. The main difference it's that I've the 'Virtual' option inside 'SubSection'; not sure if it's relevant. -
[SOLVED] XFCE Slideshow Wallpaper - Fade animations
Dear forums
As the title says, I wonder if there is any way to get nice fade animations like in Gnome or KDE for XFCE. I remember there being an inbuilt option in XFCE making it possible to select some images which would be cycled through, but other than using e.g. Variety on Ubuntu, there is no animation when the wallpaper changes. Does this depend on some library? Could it be that Ubuntu has a configuration which makes it possible to use those animations automatically in XFCE too?
I'm seriously considering leaving Ubuntu for good and use Arch Linux again, but since I'm using my Computer every day, I'd like my Desktop to look pretty.

In case anyone will need this:
xwinwrap -b -fs -sp -fs -nf -ov -- feh --bg-fill /path/to/your/wallpapers/
xwinwrap will say that feh died but the exit code is 0 so there's nothing to worry about (does feh run as a daemon in the background?). Fade duration is specified by the compositor itself (now the only thing that'd make it perfect would be making compton use a longer fade duration on feh only), for automatic switching I'll use this for now, file "wallpaper_randomizer":

Hi All,
I have recently installed ArchLinux and have been experimenting ever since. I have my wifi set up through netcfg which uses multiple profiles so I can connect wherever I am. I have also settled with XFCE desktop environment, and am happy so far but I have a tendancy to swap and change a lot.
The on issue I have is when attempting to use the wavelan plugin in XFCE. As soon as I add it to the panel it crashes and in tty1 I get:
sh: /sbin/ifconfig: No such file or directory
I know that net-tools has been deprecated, is there anyway round this?
I tried searching for this issue by googling and on the forum/wiki. Apologies if it has been already solved!

However, (and I run XFCE too), I recommend NetworkManager & network-manager-applet for WiFi as it makes dealing with encrypted networks much easier. -
[SOLVED] xfce does not start after SLiM login :S
hello, i have been following the wiki's to setup X, and xfce (which works when i start it from CLI (startxfce4)), and i have installed SLiM which works too!
Anyway, i have setup SLiM to startup via /etc/inittab, (Runlevel 5). I use ~/.xinitrc to run my xfce WM:
#the only uncommented line is:
exec startxfce4
The problem is that once SLiM loads, and i login, X seems to crash (i see the CLI login) before SLiM respawns, and i am required to login again. I think it must be a simple issue of xfce not actually being started?
i have tried changing startxfce4 to xfce-session, neither work. The login code for SLiM is (/etc/slim.conf):
login_cmd exec /bin/bash -login ~/.xinitrc %session
and from the same file, my available sessions are:
sessions xfce4,icewm,wmaker,blackbox
So, ive heard of some other people who seemed to experience this same issue, but i cant seem to resolve it like they did anyway, i think i must be missing something and would like some help? thanks.

After few tests I noticed that while X is working automount is broken again and no possibilty to go to standby either. This was in the past solved by going to the latest version of consolekit. The problem is that I'm already running consolekit 0.4.1-2.
Here is the message I get when inserting a USB drive:

The above error came from the fact that when I got stuck with no WM I modifed the .xinitrc to only have 'exec startxfce4' rather than my original '
exec ck-launch-session startxfce4'. Then after fixing the WM issue I forgot to modify .xinitirc back.

[SOLVED] Xfce 4.8, "no running instance of xfce4-panel has been found"
Hello fellow Archers!
I just upgraded my Xfce installation to version 4.8, but I have a weird problem with xfce4-panel. After upgrading the system via pacman I've rebooted, and after logging in I couldn't see the Xfce's panel anymore! Moreover, a dialog box pops up saying that "no running instance of xfce4-panel has been found". I've tried to fix this issue by launching xfce4-panel through a terminal, and then saving the session before logging out. Now when I log in, I can finally see the panel, but the pop up window keeps coming out every single time. Do you have any suggestions on what could be the issue?

[Solved] Xfce 4 displays Home folder, not just ~/Desktop folder...
When normally Xfce should display icons linking to Home, Trash, and any mounted volumes, Xfce, in Arch, at least, seems to be showing every unhidden file in my home folder.
I've deleted every file in my ~/.config file related to Xfce, so it's not a bad config file. I'm launching it from my .xinitrc with xinit, using the command "exec ck-launch-session startxfce4," and have reinstalled several times, and deleted my .config/xfce4 folder each time. When I uninstall, there's nothing related to Xfce in /etc/xdg. Has anybody else had this issue? Is there a solution that can be found?
This doesn't happen in my Debian Sid, which is running the same version of Xfce (assuming Arch has 4.6.2), which makes it even weirder, and all I've done to that is change the panels, wallpaper, and add a couple programs to startup on that install (wicd-client and avant-window-navigator, specifically).

Thanks! I figured it was important, and did a search before posting back, installing xdg-user-dirs, running it xdg-user-dir, and editing the file accordingly. Log out, log back in, and it's all fine now. Funny that it should work out this way, despite using XFCE with no problems in the past.

[SOLVED] XFCE and automounting DVD/CD
Hello all,
New to XFCE, switched from gnome 3, and I have a few questions, if someone can point me in the right direction:
1) how can I automount DVDs or CD's as well as USB thumb drives? I tried devmon for udisks, and that didn't work.
2) as a regular user, I don't have access to the "Restart" and "Shutdown" buttons from the logout menu, they are dimmed.
3) whenever I roll my mouse into the lower right corner of the desktop, it appears to get "stuck" for a second or two. this is the only corner it gets stuck in.
any help is greatly appreciated.

[Solved]Yet Another HAL / Mounting issue....
My issue can be avoided by manually mounting a device, just to get that out there.
Whenever I transfer a larger file ( > 200mb) onto a removable USB device formated in either FAT or any non-journaled filesystem, Thunar will *pretend* like its unmounting the device but after about 20 seconds it states:
Failed to unmount "<device name>".
Did not receive a reply. Possible causes include: the remote application did not send a reply,
the message bus security policy blocked the reply, the reply timeout expired,
or the network connection was broken.
On top of the message, my data written is mostly corrupt.
What I know:
** Thunar uses exo-unmount to unmount devices given a HAL uuid. Maybe this is failing? Any clue how to debug this?
** 20-storage-methods.fdi states that all vfat mounted devices have 'flush' and 'async' mount options... could this be an issue?
** I'm part of the 'storage' and 'power' groups.
** i start XFCE using ck-launch-session startxfce4
I've made sure that the device has no other handles and is not open in any window. My system(s) all have new and updated HAL and DBUS, as well as every other package. Running 'sync' after writing the files sometimes fixes the issue. Does anyone have a fix for why removable drives aren't "sending a reply" ? Thanks!

The result of this is basically...
*Device inserted
*Mounted in /media/<device name> automatically
*(No access via Thunar sidepane since it gets mounted with `mount`)
*No need to manually unmount
*just unplug or power off the device and it gets "lazy" unmounted via `unmount`
Downside:
*Mounting a drive via TrueCrypt creates a directory in /media that doesn't get automatically deleted.
*Not a solution to Thunar having response issues with unmounting.

[SOLVED] Xfce 4.10 problems - windows borderless after upgrade
minutes ago i update Xfce 4.8 to Xfce 4.10
to start again I find that open windows are borderless and can not be closed
i delete de files in ~/.config/xfce4 and ~/.cache/sessions but the problem continues...
I can do now??

Check again which version of xfwm4 you have installed (e.g. xfwm4 -V; pacman -Qi xfwm4; etc), and make sure to upgrade to the latest.
well, i found that i had installed xfwm4-tiling 4.8.3-1 ... i removed that and i install xfwm4 4.10.0-1 and solved problem!!!

I was told in #xfce that a rewritten xfce4-menueditor will not make it for the 4.6 release. As for the menu perhaps this will help you: http://wiki.xfce.org/howto/customize-menu
And if you mean the desktop context menu, I believe it is hardcoded
Wow, this is a huge step backward. The 4.4 menu editor wasn't the most feature-rich, but at least it worked for basic adding and removing of items. Now we have to go back to terminal gymnastics in the meantime while we wait for v. 4.8? Pretty lame. I don't know why they release something just to release it when it actually has less functionality than before.
Also, as noted above, some gstreamer packages are now required for the mixer to work, so it seems those need to be added as arch dependencies. And does anyone else have a problem with the mixer icon? Mine is corrupted somehow and looks weird. The slider volume indicator that used to be next to it is gone, too.
Taskbar clock is pretty bad still, with apparently no way to change the default font or color. I thought i read somewhere that the clock was supposed to have been completely revamped with better options?
Moving Autostart applications to Session and *Startup* makes a lot of sense, but I think changing "User Interface" to "Appearance" is a mistake, and the new dialog is awful. UI used to be next to Window Manager, which was more convenient and intuitive, and now it's way up on its own at the beginning. You also have to select multiple tabs just to change fonts, DPI, etc. while the Window Manager dialog still (rightly) keeps all those on the first page. Why the discrepancy? Those options should be on the first page in Appearance, too. Style and Fonts should be merged into one tab, and Icons and Settings should be merged into another tab. Two tabs, not four.
I also don't understand why they don't include the Screensaver applet in the Settings window, while it appears on the Settings menu. Menu editor (if they develop one) should be including in Settings too, imo.
That's my critique so far. The transition was actually pretty smooth except for these minor items and the desktop menu issues, which are actually pretty major, imo. -
[SOLVED] Xfce 4.12 desktop background problem
Hello everyone,
I have a problem with Xfce 4.12 desktop background. After pc rebooting I see distorted desktop background. If I change the desktop wallpaper, the background becomes normal. The same thing happens when reloading xfdesktop, the background becomes normal.

I downgraded kernel to version 3.14.6-1, now xfce desktop looks OK and no errors during boot.
