[SOLVED] xfce4 application specific keyboard shortcuts

Hi All,
I remember being able to directly change a menu shortcut with xfce, although I could be mis-remembering.  I want to bind 'Send Now' in Thunderbird to Ctrl+Shift+d (or just Ctrl+D I guess), because that is what I am used to.  I don't think I can do this in the xfce keyboard global keyboard shortcuts, those just launch apps from the command line, and I don't think I can use the window manager shortcuts either, although I may be wrong.  I remember just highlighting a menu item and choosing a key combination, and that that just worked... but I can't find it anywhere now.  Is it maybe a different window manager?
I am using xfce4 with xfwm4 4.10.1-1. I have compositing switched on.  Let me know if there is any other info you need about my setup, I am honestly not sure which parts of the desktop environment/window manager/application settings/kernel (probably nothing to do with the kernel) are involved here, so I am not sure what info to give.
Thanks!

Yup, that's it: editable menu Appearance->Settings.  Sadly it doesn't work in Thunderbird.  Thanks though!
The solution in Thunderbird is the keyconfig extension.  I found the help page at http://kb.mozillazine.org/Keyconfig_ext … hunderbird and figured out the solution:
1. Install keyconfig
2. Navigate to keyconfig Preferences
3. Click 'Add a new key' at the bottom left
4. Name the key anything, I chose 'key_send' as that is the name of the key
5. Replace /* CODE */ with  goDoCommand("cmd_sendNow") and click 'OK'
6. Assign a hotkey and click 'Apply'
7. Restart Thunderbird
8. You're done!
That worked for me.  Hopefully this helps someone else one day.

  • Application specific keyboard shortcuts missing

    Hey all,
Just noticed that the 2 or 3 app specific keyboard shortcuts I set up in sys prefs are no longer listed. They work, but don't show up in sys prefs for keyboard shortcuts.
This means I can't edit the existing ones if need be. I also don't exactly remember them all and it would be nice to replicate them for friends or other computers in the future.
    Any ideas/fixes?

  • [SOLVED] Custom Copy & Paste Keyboard Shortcuts in Gnome3

I'm looking for a way to make custom keyboard shortcuts in for the copy and paste functions. Specifically, I want F1 to be Copy. F2 to be Paste.
(In the future, I'd love to be able to do more, like Find, Cut, adding in frequently used text phrases via one keyboard combo ... in ANY application.)
Why? Because I use a different keyboard layout, Dvorak. I'm sure other layouts have similar problems. The Ctrl-C and Ctrl-V are all of a sudden two handed operations. Slows me down. I need a non-mouse (I'm aware of the middle-click option), one handed operation solution.
There's a solution I found for Windows, AutoHotkey. Lets me do this. No Linux alternative as far as I was able to find. The options in the System Settings for Keyboard shortcuts do not include the Copy, Paste, etc functions. I also tried xclip. Works for copy. Just not paste. I can't get it to paste into any X app. I've used every variation of xclip -o I could. It appears that xclip isn't made for this. Nor do any of the other clipboard-like packages appear to be for it either.
    Any suggestions?

    Found a solution!
    xdotool
Nothing else needed. I just set up custom keyboard shortcuts in the Gnome3 system settings that utilize this command. "xdotool key ctrl+v" will paste. I have that set to F2. "xdotool key ctrl+c" set to F1.
It can type preset text as well, which I use a lot at work (not so much at home). " xdotool type "Hello world!" "

  • Program specific keyboard shortcuts

There is probably a way to do this...
I have a program that have preset Function Key shortcuts built into it, however, on my keyboard (the one that came with my iMac) it has those keys assigned to universal functions (e.g. play, brightness, volume. etc).
Can I setup my iMac so that the Function Keys have different assignments for a specific program and then go back when I'm not using that program?
    mf

I am not familiar with 10.6.
Here is my other most favored application. Of course, I haven't checked these out in newer OS's. I'm a Tiger man myself.
iKey is a front end program that simulates typing and mouse movements. I use iKey to remap the Function keys.
"iKey is an automation utility, a program that creates shortcuts to accomplish repetitive tasks. In essence, an iKey shortcut is a little program in its own right, but you don't need to know the first thing about programming to create an iKey shortcut. All you have to do is put together three necessary parts of a shortcut: One or more commands that give the shortcut its functionality, a context in which it runs, and a launcher that defines how the shortcut is activated."
    http://www.scriptsoftware.com/ikey/
iKey  has a little more function then the previous free version called youpi key. For many years, I used youpi key before switching to iKey.  It works fairly well for me in MAC OS 10.4 although not officially supported.  The youpi key download is hard to find & no longer here.

( Send me a message for a copy of youpi  key. )
    *Examples:*
I have the common programs that I use assigned to function keys. I have F4 assigned to Firefox. When I want to start FireFox, I press F4. When I want to switch to firefox, I press F4! Starting & switching to an application in Mac OS are the same thing in Mac OS.
Here is an example of to assign volumn control to a function key.

Here is my script for listing my application folder. I have it assigned to function-key 6.
    tell application "Finder"
open folder "Applications" of startup disk
       select Finder window 1
       set bounds of Finder window 1 to {-3, 44, 691, 545}
       --set position of Finder window 1 to {33, 44}
       set position of Finder window 1 to {60, 45}
       activate
    end tell
The second portion of this script was generated in the script editor record mode. After I recorded the script and did some editing, I copy the script to ikey/youpi key.

  • [SOLVED] How to add keyboard shortcuts in XFCE?

I'm giving XFCE a try lately after all of the changes I'm seeing, I'm trying to add a new shortcut to ease some tasks but I don't have a clue on how to do it.
I go to Settings -> Keyboard and there to "Application shortcuts". Then I  select to add a new one and point to the script I want to run, but I don't have a clue on how to select the shortcut. I've tried pressing the keys I want to bind, but no way.
    This is what I'm seeing:
How to choose the actual shortcut?
Last edited by KaoDome (2012-05-11 13:16:03)

It is the next screen   Pick the command, click OK.  It then throws up a box telling you to press the key combination.  It will show as you push meta, shift and control modifiers.  When you hit a character that generates a keystroke, it saves it, along with the modifiers.

  • How can I turn off a specific keyboard shortcut?

We use a 3rd party vendor's platform to create/maintain content on our school website. When writing stories, I often use standard editing shortcuts (such as command-B for bold, command-I for italic, etc.). But when I hit command-B in the new FF 4.0 release, the bookmarks window opens - so I now need to use the pulldown menu to make this standard command. And it just slows me down.
Any idea how I can turn off this feature?

    Hi, thanks for the reply.
    No.
Please read my post, i'm asking how to turn off the specific shortcut in my original post, not assign actions to the mouse buttons (i know how to do that). I'm aware i can simply turn off the scroll wheel function altogether from the mouse preferences but i don't want to lose that function.
I want to know how to turn off the SHIFT + SCROLL WHEEL CLICK shortcut that switches the screen to the widget screen.

  • [SOLVED] Specifying application specific flags through App launcher

    Hello there,
Is there a way to specify default launch flags from an application launcher? (e.g. chromium --incognito, qbittorrent --webui-port=X)

You can definitely do that with aliases :-)
I think it should be possible, according to these examples: https://gitorious.org/fehlstart/pages/Configuration

  • [solved] Xmonad periodically forgets keyboard shortcuts

I'm running Xmonad + Xmobar. Sometimes, seemingly at random, Xmonad refuses to respond to certain shortcuts. I can't open a terminal, open dmenu, and possibly others. Others, such as switching layouts, changing workspaces, and restarting Xmonad work correctly.
Does anyone have any experience with this? A Google search gave me a little info on a similar problem, but the solution doesn't apply.

From what I've seen, yours is the exact same problem. Putting a laptop running xmonad-darcs to sleep can potentially do something bad. In the future, I'll copy my config over to another laptop running xmonad from the repos to see if there's some difference between the two. I guess I also need to learn a bit of Haskell so I can modify the config I'm using to remove xmobar from it.

  • Is there a way to customize keyboard shortcuts in applications?

Some applications allow keyboard shortcuts to be customized, usually in preferences, but I'm wondering if there's a way to customize keyboard shortcuts in apps that don't have this feature built in.

from Apple's OS X Help Menu:
    Create keyboard shortcuts for apps
Assign your own keyboard shortcuts to menu commands in any OS X app, including Finder. This might be useful if a global shortcut, which works the same with most apps, conflicts with a specific app shortcut. In this case, you could assign a different key combination.
You can only create keyboard shortcuts for existing menu commands. You  cannot create keyboard shortcuts for general purpose tasks such as opening an app.
Choose Apple menu > System Preferences, then click Keyboard.
    Open Keyboard preferences for me
Click Shortcuts, select App Shortcuts, then click Add (+).
Click the Application pop-up menu, then choose an app. If you want to set the same key combination for a menu command that appears in many apps, choose All Applications.
If the app you want to select doesn’t appear in the list, choose Other, then locate it using the Open dialog. Some apps may not allow you to set keyboard shortcuts.
Type the menu command for which you want to set a keyboard shortcut in the Menu Title field.
You must type the command exactly as it appears in the Application menu, including ellipses and any other punctuation. To type an ellipsis, use three periods without spaces.
Click in the Keyboard Shortcut field, press the key combination that you want to assign to the menu command, then click Add (+).
You can’t use each type of key (for example, a letter key) more than once in a key combination.
Quit and restart any apps you’re using for the new keyboard shortcut to take effect.
If you assign a keyboard shortcut that already exists for another command or another app, your new shortcut won’t work. Find the menu command that’s using it, then reassign the keyboard shortcut for that item.
To remove a customized shortcut, click Delete (–).

  • Need to use a specific windows keyboard shortcut on Mac

I need to use a specific keyboard shortcut for a program that I am running (via Parallels) but the same keyboard shortcut is used in OS X to take a screen shot of a window via dashboard, which takes precedence over the command I am attempting to use.
The keyboard shortcut in "Windows-Speak" is Shift-Ctrl-W.  What are my options here? Can I deactivate that shortcut in OS X?

CrossOver is a program that lets you run some Windows software withhout installing Windows. The emphasis is on some. At their website Crossover rates the supported software on a scale from Bronze to Gold - if the program you need to run is supported at the Gold standard you will probably be okay. Silver and Bronze ratings means the rated Windows software will run but with glitches or even missing functionality. (Silver being better support than Bronze, obviously.)
Virtualization solutions such as VirtualBox (or the more capable and feature laden Parallels Desktop and VMWare Fusion) let you install another operating system (and software) to use at the same time as you use your Mac software. It is a nifty solution and while virtualization isn't quite as fast as running an OS totally native (BootCamp) the speed hit isn't all that significant and affects graphics rendering more than anything else.
I'm an IT instructor and software trainer and about 80% of this work involves Windows software. I do it using a Mac computer running Windows in Parallels Desktop. If it weren't for the Apple logo on my notebook no one would know I'm using a Mac - and the notebook in virtualization feels faster than the cheap Dell computers we use.

  • Some Keyboard Shortcuts No Longer Working in Apps

Recently, two specific keyboard shortcuts have stopped working within all my apps:
    command-1
    command-2
For example, in Final Draft they are supposed to switch formatting to become scene headings and action lines, respectively.  All the other command shortcuts still work.  In Word, I have command-1 through command-6  commands set to change text colors.  Command-1 and command-2 no longer work but the rest stil function properly.
All of my shortcuts worked perfectly for well over a year.  Anyone know why two of them might have stopped all of a sudden?
    Thanks in advance,

Ignore the permissions messages, as per http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1448
    Here's the second way:
While logged into the newly created admin account, backup the bad account's folder, delete the bad account, selecting the save data option (which is stored in /Users/Deleted Users/ as a disk image), recreate the bad account using the same username/password combo, log out and back into the recreated original account. If the problem's solved, open the saved data dmg file in /Users/Deleted Users/, open the /Library/Preferences/ folder from the saved data, open the current /Users/restored account/Library/Preferences/ folder, and slowly copy plist files from the saved data folder to the current one that don't exist in it. Log out and back in to ensure there's no conflict and things still work correctly. Resolving conflicts or identifying corrupt plist files is a laborious process. Good luck.

  • Script works in Word 2008 but can't assign keyboard shortcut

Since I must have emacs keystrokes on those fortunately rare occasions when I have to use Word 2008, and because there is no explicit "delete character" command in Word (since there's already a built in keystroke for it, presumably) I've written a simple script that activates the delete key:
    tell application "System Events"
tell application "Microsoft Word" to activate
    key code 117
    end tell
I have put this in ~/Documents/Microsoft User Data/Word Script Menu Items so that it shows up in the script menu in Word. If I select the script from the menu via the mouse, it works just fine and deletes the character to the right of the cursor. However, if I try to assign a Word-specific keyboard shortcut (the usual emacs keystroke Ctrl-d, of course) using the Keyboard & Mouse preference pane to this macro it simply doesn't work. "^D" shows up next to the name of the script in the Word script menu, so the shortcut appears to be registering, and the little script menubar icon even flashes blue when I hit Ctrl-d, but nothing happens; the script just does not seem to run.
Any help appreciated. I really need to have this keystroke to be able to use Word and remain reasonably happy about it.

Follow up: My Word-specific shortcut seems to work the *first time* I use it after bringing up a document. Thereafter it fails. Thanks.

  • Mighty Mouse: assign keyboard shortcuts

Is it possible to assign specific keyboard shortcuts to mighty mouse buttons? For example, I would like to click the scroll ball and have it send command-H (to hide the frontmost application), and I would like to click the left/right buttons at the same time to send command-W (to close the frontmost window).
I have a third party mouse set up to do this (using the third party control panel) on my macbook, but I just got an imac and it doesn't seem that the mighty mouse can do this...
    thanks for your help

You can assign keystrokes to buttons with software, such as SteerMouse
    <http://plentycom.jp/en/steermouse/index.html>
but the Mighty Mouse does not support left and right simultaneously. It has a single switch, and uses a proximity sensors to determine if it's a left or right click.

i tried disabling all extensions ("safe mode")
i looked around in about:config and i couldn't find anything
    FF version 4.0.1
Extensions: DownThemAll, Google Image Help, Google Shortcuts, LastPass, SortPlaces, Tab Utilities, VideoDownloadHelper, Xmarks

Did you try to start Firefox in <u>[[Safe Mode]]</u> to check if one of the extensions is causing the problem?<br />
You can switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox (Tools) > Add-ons > Appearance/Themes) to check if the theme is causing it.
    * Don't make any changes on the Safe mode start window.

If it does work in Safe-mode then disable all extensions and then try to find which is causing it by enabling one at a time until the problem reappears.
    * Use "Disable all add-ons" on the [[Safe mode]] start window to disable all extensions.
    * Close and restart Firefox after each change via "File > Exit" (Mac: "Firefox > Quit"; Linux: "File > Quit")
In Firefox 4 you can use one of these to start in <u>[[Safe mode]]</u>:
