Some CNAME DNS queries fail after latest 10.6.5 update

Right after rebooting from the latest MacOS X update I noticed some DNS queries are failing. These happen to be DNS queries for CNAME records. Other computers in the same network are not affected by this problem, including Mac's to wich the update was not yet installed.
Here are the simple diagnostic steps:
snowboard:~ pmsjt$ nslookup imap.texair.net.

Just as a sanity check, the second portion of the clause from the KB article doesn't apply in your situation, does it?
Additionally, Mac OS X v10.6 automatically detects when the local network operator has set up a name server that will answer name requests for a domain ending in ".local". It does this by checking to see if there is a Start Of Authority (SOA) record for the top level domain "local", which is how a DNS server indicates that it claims to have authority over a part of the DNS namespace. As long as the DNS server is properly configured with the required SOA record, Mac OS X v10.6 will detect this SOA record and automatically use this server to look up all host names in the domain.
Also, if you have time, you might want to check what mDNSResponder is actually doing by enabling logging; the man page describes the process in more detail:
LOGGING
There are several methods with which to examine mDNSResponder's internal state for debugging and
diagnostic purposes. The syslog(1) logging levels map as follows:
Error - Error messages
Warning - Client-initiated operations
Notice - Sleep proxy operations
Info - Informational messages
By default, only log level Error is logged.
A SIGUSR1 signal toggles additional logging, with Warning and Notice enabled by default:
% sudo killall -USR1 mDNSResponder
Once this logging is enabled, users can additionally use syslog(1) to change the log filter for the
process. For example, to enable log levels Emergency - Debug:
% sudo syslog -c mDNSResponder -d
A SIGUSR2 signal toggles packet logging:
% sudo killall -USR2 mDNSResponder
A SIGINFO signal will dump a snapshot summary of the internal state to /var/log/system.log:
% sudo killall -INFO mDNSResponder
http://developer.apple.com/library/mac/#documentation/Darwin/Reference/ManPages/ man8/mDNSResponder.8.html
I suspect in this case packet logging might be most informative.

    VERY many thanks once again.
    pacman -Q pygtk gtk2 give different versions, as I haven't yet been able to fix my previous problem with Firefox 3.6 (machine in constant use), so I guess that's the problem.
    Thank you SO much for your help, support and patience.

  • DNS Lokup fails after waking from sleep

    Since the recent update, whenever my computer wakes from sleep the DNS Lookup fails and I cannot connect to the internet for 30sec-1minute. I've never experienced this problem before. Any thoughts?

    FWIW, I never sleep my machines or their HDs, just their displays and never have an issue waking up the displays, usually run 24/7. Give that a shot.

  • Some keys stopped responding apparently after latest update

    Dear all,
    all of the sudden, apparently after the latest update, some keys on my native keyboard stop responding from time to time. Mostly I can verify the problem with the a, s, k and l keys. It seems that pressing the combination ctrl+alt solves the problem for some time.
    What I tried was
    - checking the Activity Monitor for processes that take a large amount of CPU -> no.
    - performing a P-RAM reset -> problem disappeared for an hour or so.
    - safe mode, restore permissions -> did not have any affect at all.
    It also seem that the external keyboard works without any problem (bluetooth).
    Any hint or solution?

    It's possible your macbook keyboard needs cleaning out. If you eat while using your computer, crumbs could have gotten underneath the keys. You should visit the macbook forums for instructions on keyboard cleaning in case that is the cause of your problems.

  • Some Widget does not work after latest upgrade

    Today is July 23rd, 2011. By recent latest upgrade, mainly for supporting Lion, where I am still using Snow Leopard 10.6.8, some widget does not work, including Battery Meter, Digital Clock Alarm, Victoria Digital Clock, etc.
    By the way, my company use Chatter and I installed Chatter Desktop. Again, after recent upgrade, it no longer work anymore.
    Do you experience the same problem?
    For those who has upgraded to Lion, do you also find some widget does not work?

    I have read a couple of complaints like that, but not sure it's widespread.
    At this point I think you should get Applejack...
    http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/15667/applejack
    After installing, reboot holding down CMD+s, (+s), then when the DOS like prompt shows, type in...
    applejack AUTO
    Then let it do all 6 of it's things.
    At least it'll eliminate some questions if it doesn't fix it.
    The 6 things it does are...
    Correct any Disk problems.
    Repair Permissions.
    Clear out Cache Files.
    Repair/check several plist files.
    Dump the VM files for a fresh start.
    Trash old Log files.
    First reboot will be slower, sometimes 2 or 3 restarts will be required for full benefit... my guess is files relying upon other files relying upon other files! :-)
    Disconnect the USB cable from any Uninterruptible Power Supply so the system doesn't shut down in the middle of the process.
    If that does NOT help, Safe Boot , (holding Shift key down at bootup), use Disk Utility from there to Repair Permissions, test if things work OK in Safe Mode.
    Then move these files to the Desktop...
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.finder.plist
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.systempreferences.plist
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.desktop.plist
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.recentitems.plist
    Reboot & test.
    PS. Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.
    If that does NOT help then I suspect the optical drive or media itself, or possibly just needs a cleaning CD run on it.

  • Boot Fail after latest BIOS Update on Flex 2-15D

    Hi everyone,
    I have a severe problem (I guess) after the latest BIOS Update. Windows 7 freezes during startup.
    I own a 64-bit Lenovo FLex 2 15D with AMD A6-6310 and R4, 4GB RAM and a SSHD (8GBSSH). I purchased it without OS and installed Windows 7 - which worked fine so far.
    I yesterday updated the BIOS with version 9FCN23WW (for Win7 and Win8), the latest BIOS update. A mistake, it seems.
    After Reboot, I first had to disable Secure Boot in the BIOS, because it would not let me boot at all. I figured out how to get into the BIOS-Setup to disable this (press Enter 2x, press Tab when in the Boot Menu to access the "Apps Menu", then "SETUP" - just in case this helps someone).
    Now Win7 begins to start up, but freezes during the startup process (the splash screen with the win flag freezes and looks a bit strange. I used the "protected mode" Windows Startup and saw that the process always hangs when loading "amdkmpfd.sys".
    That is basically it.I guess I have to find a way to re-install the previous version of the BIOS, but I have no idea how!
    Any idea?!
    Now about what I did to fix this (poor, but I tried):
    If I try to start from a Win7 installation CD-ROM (actually it is one for Dell PCs, but I guess that is not the problem) and press a key to boot from CD, Windows loads files, shows "Starting Windows"  and at a certain point again just freezes. When I -do not- press a key, WIndows Boot Manager shows up and mentions that "Windows failed to start (etc.)" "File: \EFI\Microsoft\Boot\BCD" "An Error occurred while attempting to read the boot configuration data."
    I can't even boot into Linux on a USB stick, because the Windows "Error Recovery" (translated from German, sorry - my guess) won't let me when I try (just offers to boot to Win7 in protected mode - it could be that it fails immediately and jumps back to Win Startup).
    Thank you for every bit of help!
    Tristam
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    I found our the solution to my problem with the help of SebastianLenovo ...
    In the BIOS / Boot Mode, I switched back from "UEFI" to "Legacy". That's it. That simple. The BIOS Upgrade routine just did not transfer that setting from the old BIOS to the new.
    Given the fact that 1. I did not change that setting, so it is default and 2. it would have been easy to avoid, if the BIOS update routine would be well programmed to transfer the current BIOS settings to the new, upgraded BIOS ...
    Anyway a strange situation that a 64-bit system has a 32-bit BIOS. Actually no Linux distribution (except FatDog and rescue systems) are able to deal with it - Linux only running as a Virtual Machine under Windows. I think this is inappropriate and really taking away a part of the fun if you can not run this laptop as a dual boot system.
    Thanks to Sebastian and I hope this solution helps someone in the future...
    Regards, Tristam.

  • Acrobat Pro X Failed After Latest Update Downloaded

    I have been using Acrobat Pro X on my Windows 7 machine successfully for almost 2 years now.  After the latest update downloaded 2 days ago, Acrobat X will no longer function properly and will not open.  What to do?

    AcroTray is running in the background.  I have attempted to create pdfs from Word and Adobe Illustrator (AI) files two different ways:  First by using the Print function in in Word and AI.  It takes me as far as selecting a file name for the new pdf, but never completes the process.  Secondly, by using the Create PDF function in Acrobat.  Again, after selecting a file name and hitting Save the process ends without creating the new pdf.  Any thoughts on this?

  • Lilo fails after latest beyond kernel (solution found)

    The lilo message is as follows:
    [root@n6re ~]# /sbin/lilo -v

    Using MENU secondary loader
    Calling map_insert_data
    Boot image: /boot/vmlinuz26
    write map file: Input/output error
    [root@n6re ~]#
    Obviously, I cannot reboot since lilo failed.
    EDIT2:  Powered down and rebooted into arch kernel OK.
    Re-ran Lilo successfully.  Rebooted into kernel26beyond and received kernel panic with reference to cannot find hda3.
    rebooted into arch and added the following to Lilo.conf ...append="root=/dev/hda3 rootfs=ext3"
    Now must run /sbin/lilo -v again before running the beyond kernel....
    Will report back...
    Any ideas to correct the error in vmlinuz26 map file?  Mebbe corrupt download?
    EDIT:  Since the error in lilo references /vmlinuz26 (not /vmlinuz26beyond) I assume that the arch kernel listing in my Lilo has been affected.  The wiki introduces an append to replace ...root=/dev/hda3.... which I assume to mean in the beyond kernel listing only.  Perhaps it is needed in the arch kernel as well?
    Below is my Lilo conf.:
    # /etc/lilo.conf
    boot=/dev/hda
    # This line often fixes L40 errors on bootup
    # disk=/dev/hda bios=0x80
    default=arch
    timeout=50
    lba32
    prompt
    image=/boot/vmlinuz26
            label=arch
            root=/dev/hda3
            initrd=/boot/initrd26-full.img
            read-only
    image=/boot/vmlinuz26beyond
            label=2.6.16-beyond
            append="root=/dev/hda3"
            initrd=/boot/kernel26.img
            read-only
    image=/boot/vmlinuz26beyond
           label=cpio
            root=/dev/hda3
            initrd=/boot/ray.img
            read-only
    image=/boot/vmlinuz26
            label=cpio2
            append="root=/dev/hda3 rootfs=ext3"
            initrd=/boot/rays.img
            read-only
    #other=/dev/hda1
    #        label=dos
    It would seem that the arch kernel needs the changes as well as the beyond kernel which isn't made mandatory in the wiki.  Am I wrong?
    EDIT3:   Ran kernel26beyond and again received ...kernel panic.
    Rewrote lilo.conf to change the append to...append="root=/dev/hda3 rootfstype=ext3" in all lilo references to beyond kernel  and cpio boots.
    Reran Lilo and will reboot into beyond kernel and report result.

    Utilized qtparted in another arch HDD boot to re-partition via USB IDE as sda1 and enabled a larger /boot partition from MB borrowed from sda2 swap partition.  Ran /sbin/lilo -v in sda3 partition.
    After rebooting into original arch HDD, successfully, rebooted to kernel26beyond and received.... kernel panic-not syncing-attempted to kill init...
    Iphitus advised that my Lilo was in error...initrd=/boot/kernel26.img....should be...initrd=/boot/kernel26beyond.img..  This change in Lilo corrected the boot of kernel26beyond.
    The original Lilo config was obtained from the wiki "Configurin mkinitcpio" which lists the wrong lilo config which I followed for the kernel26beyond.
    A word to the wise>>>>>
    Edit:  Iphitus advises wiki has been corrected

    Here is the message from 'xmessage' when I start fluxbox as usual (fbsetbg is in the 'startup' in the .fluxbox directory):
    fbsetbg: Something went wrong while setting the wallpaper.
    Run 'display -backdrop -window root /home/fred/.bg/background.jpg' from an xterm to find out what.
    This is what I get when doing fbsetbg manually (as in the startup file)
    $fbsetbg -C ~/.bg/background.jpg
    /usr/bin/fbsetbg: line 522: 4918 Segmentation fault $WPSETTER `eval echo $option` "$wallpaper"
    And this is what I get when running the command as suggested by 'xmessage':
    $ display -backdrop -window root /home/fred/.bg/tobacco_sky.jpg

  • Car bluetooth failed after recent OS 6.2 update

    My car bluetooth (car is a BMW X5) has suddenly stopped working, immediately after my iPhone 5 updated its OS to 6.1.
    It all worked perfectly before the OS upgrade.
    Have re-paired it, re-set everything - no good.  Any suggestions?
    What happens is - the phone pairs with the car stereo, the car stereo answers the phone - but there's no sound. Can't hear anything - on the car stereo, on the phone, nothing.
    And before anyone asks - yes, I am using it correctly, and the car is selected in the phone settings and when the call comes through.
    I used it successfully for months - until the latest OS upgrade...  And then it stops.     6.0 was fine.  Why would 6.1 fail?
    Why would the 6.1 upgrade cause this to happen?    What have Apple changed in their bluetooth functionality for OS 6.1, that would make something that worked perfectly suddenly stop working after the 6.1 upgrade??  Why make these changes suddenly?
    Anyway, am very very annoyed.   I need to answer my phone in the car, for goodness sake!  Are you trying to make me get a blackberry or an Android device, Apple?

    Thanks for the lack of response, Apple.
    I guess maybe it's time to get a Samsung Galaxy?
    They at least seem to have some interest in ensuring software upgrades don't cut users off from their existing services.

    ANY HINT?
    THANK YOU A LOT.

    Hi ag69360, and a warm welcome to the forums!
    Could be many things, we should start with this...
    "Try Disk Utility
    1. Insert the Tiger Mac OS X Install disc that came with your computer, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
    Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
    5. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    6. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
    Then Safe Boot , (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it finishes.
    The usual reason why updates fail or mess things up, or things don't load/run, is if Permissions are not fixed before & after every update, with a reboot... you may get a partial update when the installer finds it doesn't have Permissions to change one obscure little part of the OS, leaving you with a mix of OS versions.
    Some people get away without Repairing Permissions for years, some for only days.
    If Permissions are wrong before applying an update, you could get mixed OS versions, if Directory is the slightest messed up, who knows!
    If many Permission are repaired, or any Directory errors are found, you may need to re-apply some the latest/biggest updates again, or even do an A&I if you have enough free disk space.

    Repair Permissions before & after re-install, then reboot again each time.
    If all the above fails, then it appears to be time for a relatively painless Archive & Install, which gives you a new/old OS, but can preserve all your files, pics, music, settings, etc., as long as you have plenty of free disk space and no Disk corruption, and is relatively quick & painless...

  • Muting incoming call after latest 5.0.2 update

    Hi! After updating my Z3C to Lollipop, I've noticed few drawbacks when it comes to smartband functionality. Despite (in my opinion) Sony bad decision of dropping their own Bluetooth unlock in favor of android smartlock, making using smartband for this extremely hard, I'm also quite irritated with how it handles incoming calls. Earlier I was able to shut the ringtone down by pressing the button on smrtband, now doing this results in phone switching to priority mode, but the ringtone is still playing. I'm not sure if this is happening from the latest update or since first lollipop software. Is someone experiencing the same behaviour? Maybe it is some update error. I'd be grateful if someone could check their devices!

    Anyone facing the same problem? If someone could chceck please, i'll know then if it's only my device or not

  • IMail problem after latest OS Yosemite Recovery update (@09.04.2015), OS X update, itunes update

    Hi,
    I have a problem. After the latest update of OS X Yosemite, Yosemite Recovery update and iTunes I have a big problem. I mail is not lunching, it says that it is identifying message conversations and it will take few minutes... But it has been all day. The situation does not change even after restarting the system. Forcing to quit and reopening the iMail does not help also.
    What is the solution?
    Have anyone had something similar?
    Any ideas?!
    Thank you in advance, looking forward for some advice.

    Try a restart.
    Do a backup, using either Time Machine or a cloning program, to ensure files/data can be recovered. Two backups are better than one.
    Try setting up another admin user account to see if the same problem continues. If Back-to-My Mac is selected in System Preferences, the Guest account will not work. The intent is to see if it is specific to one account or a system wide problem. This account can be deleted later.
    Isolating an issue by using another user account
    Try booting into the Safe Mode using your normal account.  Disconnect all peripherals except those needed for the test. Shut down the computer and then power it back up after waiting 10 seconds. Immediately after hearing the startup chime, hold down the shift key and continue to hold it until the gray Apple icon and a progress bar appear and again when you log in. The boot up is significantly slower than normal. This will reset some caches, forces a directory check, and disables all startup and login items, among other things. When you reboot normally, the initial reboot may be slower than normal. If the system operates normally, there may be 3rd party applications which are causing a problem. Try deleting/disabling the third party applications after a restart by using the application un-installer. For each disable/delete, you will need to restart if you don’t do them all at once.

  • Photo editor app now available but doesn't work, after latest What's New update

    hi all
    odd experience what I wanted to highlight with you all.
    I've just had an updated (this morning) to What's New build 3.0.A.0.2
    After installing this patch / update, I was then told that "Photo Editor" was available to download. Build is 5.0.A.0.12
    As far as I'm concerned I've not had this app on my phone before - checking in system apps reveals this is a fresh install, rather than an update to an existing app.
    Also, I've not worked out how to run it, as there's no app shortcut on my homescreen. The app is not visible in the app picklist (when adding new items to my homescreens) either. Nor is the app in the main app list (accessed with the 6 dots button in the middle of the permanent shortcut panel on the homescreen).
    I've even tried using a very useful app "quick shortcut maker" and although I can find photo editor in its activity list, when i test the generated shortcut, I get "unfortunately, photo editor has stopped".
    Any ideas?
    I do have some apps disabled, so does photo editor have any known dependencies?
    EDIT: I've tried clearing photo editor data and restarting - no change.
    Cheers,
    Gary

    Hi MyAliasIsGary
    Photo Editor is a system app only, it is available for use when editing photo's through your Album or Photo's app. For example, if you go into Album > tap on a photo > tap the icon at the bottom that looks like a pencil on paper > tap Photo editor.
